SUMAHAN IS an architectural treasure
The design philosophy is Turkish but contemporary, uncluttered but warm. The restoration of Sumahan is the culmination of the 30-year labour of love that began with Nedret Butler’s architectural thesis.

Sumahan’s architecture has two aspects – the original construction that has been restored and the newly built. The parts that are ‘new’ take their construction system, materials and details from the old, remaining loyal to the building’s original design.

​On the southern corner of the property is a lighthouse, one of nineteen found on the shores of the Bosphorus. Sumahan’s lighthouse, the third lighthouse on the Asian side of the Bosphorus from the Sea of Marmara, is painted with three stripes.

A skyline, shaped by millennia of history 
The Bosphorus is the artery that feeds the heart and spirit of Istanbul. From the hotel, every room looks directly down the Bosphorus towards the Sea of Marmara, through the arch of the suspension bridge and over the twin domes of the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia, circled by towering minarets which blur into the distant haze.

TURKISH HAMAM
The Turkish Hamam within Sumahan Hotel in Istanbul is a deeply aesthetic way of keeping clean. Historically, it was at the center of Turkish culture and at Sumahan we have tried to capture the spirit and architecture of this ritual.

It depends as much on the quality of light seeping through the domed ceiling, the echo of running water, the application of warmth and cool, the smooth feel of marble, as it does on soap.

​Sumahan’s own private hamam polishes the ritual to a level of refinement hard to find elsewhere. Upon entering the Sumahan Wellness you are greeted by a marble fountain, fresh fruit, walnuts and dried apricots.

​First, you wrap your body in a soft peştemal (towel). Your next step is into the hamam itself where you are enveloped by the heat of the hararet (warmth) under a traditional dome that bathes the Marmara marble floor in warm light.

The göbek taşı (a raised marble platform) centres the room where you can choose to cleanse yourself using one of the carved kurnas (basins) with an ornate copper tas (bowl). However, the ultimate indulgence is to enlist the services of our specially trained masseur or masseuse.

​She will suds and exfoliate your whole body with a kese, the traditional rough cloth mitt. Following this deep-scrubbing and thorough washing, you will be treated to a professional foam massage, the kind that loosens your muscles as the hot waters continue running and steam rising.

Now you are ready for soğukluk, the cooling-off section where you can lounge on a large divan listening to the soothing sounds of the marble fountain.

Hotel Fidanka, is a dream come true of a family from Istanbul who loves trees, flowers, beautiful gardens, antiques, places with a soul, nature, art and good food!

We have worked in other professions for years, visited many places, and finally built a hotel in a wonderful bay in the Kaş-Kalkan region, which we love dearly, where we share all the beauties we have collected in ourselves, with sincerity and impeccable service understanding for the comfort and happiness of our guests.

Our special interest and passion is Hundreds of different plants in Fidanka’s (female sapling in Bulgarian) garden.Our hotel consists of 17 rooms, with six different types, most of them larger than 40 sqm, each of which has huge terraces with magnificent sea views.

In our rooms, we combined 200-year-old cedars of the nearby highland villages, hundreds of years old wooden walls of a mansion that was destroyed in Istanbul, doors and windows and various wooden parts that we collected from unused historical houses of Anatolian and Black Sea villages.

The thousands of antique pieces that we have been collecting passionately since we knew ourselves are the most colorful, exciting and fun pieces of the whole beautiful picture.

On the garden floor, these spacious 40 sqm suites set up for three people, have a double and a single bed. These suites, perched in the garden, have their own private terraces and have been recently renovated using the same antiques and hundred-year-old cedar trees.

Our cuisine is the result of our insatiable appetite for new tastes, with the consultancy and training we received from expert chefs.

On one hand, we constantly follow the developments in the international cuisines, on the other hand, we bring to our table the geographical flavors of our country, which has an endless range of natural products.

All regions around Turkey are like our local bazaar… We bring cheeses, tomato paste, spices, sauces, pomegranate syrups from Kars, İzmir Menemen, Antakya, Antep, sourdough breads from Istanbul, jams, smoked meats from Denizli, olive oil from Ayvalık. Umut Karakuş, who graduated with a grand diploma from Le Cordon Blue, one of the most prestigious gastronomy schools in the world and did his internship in Munich Pageu with Michelin-starred Ali Güngörmüş, works on Anatolian cuisine, modern appetizers and spices enriched by the migrations that brought the flavours to the present.

Umut Karakuş, who established Turkey’s first spice library and received the most creative chef awards of the year many times, is revising our menu and cuisine from top to bottom. We create our new menu by combining centuries-old traditional Anatolian recipes with modern European techniques.

We meticulously protect our country’s geographically indicated, natural and organic local products, while supporting small local producers.

Our Beloved Antiques & Collections
The biggest feature that makes Fidanka peerless is that it continues a unique family legacy. Antiques are our greatest passion left to us from our ancestors. They are not just decorations for us.

In addition to a huge collection that we have inherited from our great-grandmothers and great-grandfathers, we host hundreds of antiques and unique objects, each of which has a different story, that we have collected from Turkey and all over the world, and we make our guests, whom we consider as our family, be a part of these stories.

Wooden handmade toys, blown bottles, enamels, earthenware jars, cloths, lace, rag bags, cross stitches, atlas quilts from our grandmother’s dowry chest, needle lace, our grandfather’s sword, valuable paintings, mosaics we made ourselves, ceramic pieces collected by our own hands from various villages of Europe…

They all tell our guests stories from their own time. One of the most defining features of Fidanka is that it is a huge botanical garden. Orange, lemon, olive, pomegranate, tangerine, eucalyptus, avocado, chinaberry, leylandi, mimosa, cypress, pine.

Beside tens of trees, many pots and earthenware jars of bougainvillea, petunias, daisies, geraniums, begonias and many more flowers that we can’t count… We think that no place and piece of nature would be complete without them.

We cultivate, grow, protect all those beautiful green, purple, pink, red, yellow and white plants and love them passionately.

Present Day Kalkan
Kalkan is a town in the western part of Antalya, in the district of Kaş. It is surrounded by mountains with pine and cedar forests parallel to the coast, which is referred to as the Mediterranean Alps in many foreign sources.

The shores of mostly rocky, deep, very turquoise sea are covered with maquis and olive groves. The small harbor of beautiful Kalkan, originally a typical Mediterranean fishing village, is now home to local fishing boats, sailboats, diving boats and daily tour boats.

The old Greek houses covered with bougainvillea on the small streets of Kalkan town, closed to traffic, are now home to beautiful terrace restaurants and bars, handmade souvenirs and boutiques, and many colorful shops.

One of the most important geographical differences of Kalkan is that the foothills of the mountains are extending parallel to the coast and go all the way in the sea, making the magnificent Mediterannean rocky, deep, very clean, very blue and in some places cold, less salty and unique with the underground waters coming from the mountains. We are surrounded by many private and natural beaches.

• Located at the end of the ancient city of Patara, 18 km long Patara Beach with its fine sand and shallow sea, 13 km away,

Apart from these, there are many private beaches in our very close vicinity. In the bay we are located, within walking distance of 200 meters, there are 2 private beaches, one of which is sandy and the other one rocky with sunbathing platforms.

Our hotel has 12 rooms, each with different decoration details, and with 7 different room types. While the high ceilings and wall decorations attract attention in the rooms, the furnishings are also covered with Italian handwork and 18 carat gold leaf.

CAPPADOCIA
60 million years ago in the 3rd geological period, the Toros mountain range was birthed, while pressure from the Anatolian plateau gave rise to highly active volcanoes that vomited and spewed lava across the region.

The accumulated ashes formed a soft tuff (volcanic rock) layer, which was then partially covered by a thin layer of lava. Formed by basalt, this abraded and cracked over time and penetrated the soft tuff, causing a distinctive abrasion.

With the additional effects of heating, cooling, and winds, cones with ‘hats’ molded from the basalt rocks began to form (and continue to do so today). The name “fairy chimney” was later bestowed on these formations by the early settlers who used them as homes. Meanwhile, the tuff layers that did not have a basalt blanket turned, thanks to erosion over time, into valleys.

Humans weren’t the first “settlers.” In the Persian language, Cappadocia means “land of beautiful horses,” for which the region is still well known. As regards humans, Cappadocia was originally established by settlements some 9–10,000 years ago, but written history begins with the Hittites.

Much later, it was an important center for budding Christianity, as evidenced from the engraved stone houses and churches. Indeed, it was somewhat of a sanctuary for early Christians. Throughout its history, Cappadocia has been a center for trading colonies, acting as a trade and social bridge between countries, for example as an important point along the old Silk Road.

Nature, history, and art have integrated beautifully in Cappadocia. The geography of the area formed the distinctive fairy chimneys, and over the course of time people created houses and churches out of these, decorating them with frescoes that today allow visitors glimpses of the remains of distant civilizations.

Indeed, these carvings and frescoes by the first Christians, together with their refuge of underground cities, showcase the harmony of humans and nature.

Over the centuries the wind and rain worked their magic on the soft rock, carving out spectacular gorges and leaving behind the dramatic pinnacles of rock – the ‘fairy chimneys’ – that have created the Cappadocian moonscape.

But Cappadocia has always been much more than its dramatic scenery. Humans, too, have left their unique mark on the region, carving cave storerooms, cave stables, cave houses and even entire underground cities out of the rock.

To this day many of the soaring pinnacles are still inhabited and many of the rock-cut storerooms are still stuffed with grapes, lemons, potatoes and flat bread waiting for the winter.

OLD CHURCHES & FRESCOES
Long, long ago Cappadocia was inhabited by Christians who also carved thousands of cave churches, chapels and monasteries out of the rock. Many of these churches were decorated with frescoes of medieval saints whose ghostly images still gaze down from the walls. In the 21st century these ancient churches make some of the most remarkable sights for visitors.

FAIRY CHIMNEYS
In the days before tourism local people called the strange rock cones that surrounded them kales, or ‘castles’. Nowadays these amazing structures are usually called peribacalari, or ‘fairy chimneys’.

They come in an extraordinary range of shapes and sizes but most are tall and phallic-shaped with a cap of harder stone that protects the softer rock underneath from erosion. Eventually these caps fall off, whereupon the wind and rain start to whittle away the cone until eventually it, too, collapses.

LOCAL COOKING CLASS
We will pick you up from your hotel at 10:45 and we will drive to a local market in Cappadocia for ingredient shopping. Then, we will drive to the one-of-a-kind unique King’s Valley of Aza Hotel for a memorable cooking experience in the middle of untouched nature.

Offered by the local village women, our cooking class is an opportunity to learn how to make the basic Cappadocian meals including soup, two dishes (dolma and sarma), and seasonal main course(eg.)

Green beans, leaks, chickpeas) dessert and Turkish Coffee. With the aid of your instructor versed in cooking terms and techniques, you will spend this half-day class learning how to create each dish – and when it comes to lunch time, you will have dolma and sarma which you have just prepared with your own hands as well as some other side dishes and traditional desserts. We will then drive you back to your hotel and finish the tour around 15pm.

ORGANIC BREAKFAST TOUR

PRIVATE BALLOON RIDE IN CAPPADOCIA
Balloning is a special and Cappadocia is the best location to do hot air ballooning. We recommend to do a private one so you will be avoiding the crowd and also having a longer duration than standard flights.
