La Barbera bed and breakfast is situated in Praiano, in a wonderful location on the Amalfi Coast that includes two ancient residential areas: the homonymous Praiano and Vettica Maggiore.

Praiano (Italy) is located halfway between Positano and Amalfi, in the most intimate heart of the Amalfi Coast, perfect for a romantic holiday. Its name is probably of Greek origin.

Praiano (Italy) overlooks to the east, towards the Capo di Conca and, in the distance, with views of Salerno and the Monti del Cilento. The village is full of sunlight from sunrise to golden sunset over the sea.

Vettica Maggiore overlooks west towards Positano and Capri and from here you can admire beautiful sunsets that surround the Faraglioni.

Like many towns on the Amalfi Coast, that you will visit during your holiday, the hamlets are developed in the upper part of the coast, bordered to the north by the wonderful Path of the Gods, trekking route famous all over the world, and in the down part of the coast, on the sea.

The coast is characterized by promontories, small and romantic beaches, and ancient towers.

Praiano (Italy) inhabitants were mainly fishermen, dedicated to tuna, sardines, and anchovies fishing and in search of coral.

In the winter they also became farmers: the fertile land, contained in the characteristic dry walls, is cultivated with citrus groves, olive groves, vineyards, vegetables and in particular the delicious piennolo tomatoes.

To defend the territory of Praiano from the Arab incursions in South Italy, called Saracens, and from the Turks, the Angevins and the Spaniards during the period of the vice reign, built numerous watchtowers and watchtowers, along the promontories of the coast.

Some have been renovated over the years and characterize the landscape including the “Torre a Mare” also called the Capo, the “Torre del Grado”. Some tower houses, of noble families, are still well recognizable for their particularity, among the white houses of Praiano.

The houses, built in lime, material that the inhabitants of Praiano produced by dissolving the limestone rocks, with domed roofs with a barrel vault or crusade, had the dual function of keeping the interiors cool and collecting rainwater in the cisterns.

The women of Praiano, over the centuries, have been skilled workers of silk, twisted thread, glass beads, hair nets made in the past with their hair, then in silk and finally in nylon.

With the same tools, the crucella, the muorlo and the ligna, the netting was done. The women helped their husbands to repair the nets on the beach but they were also very good embroiderers.

In the village of Marina di Praia were built the boats with the wood from Agerola, which was also sold in Africa, the fishers made the netting and made the ropes with a plant that still today it grows along the coast; women salted the anchovies and sardines.

SANTA MARIA DEL CASTRO (SAN DOMENICO)
At two hundred meters from the B & B La Barbera you will find the steps leading to the Monastery of San Domenico, a path full of spirituality. Immersed in the luxuriant nature of the Mediterranean vegetation you reach the church and from its square, you can enjoy an extraordinary panorama.

In these places, the Municipality of Praiano organizes the exciting Concerts Sounds of the gods, inspired by the Path of the Gods, a millennial road that in ancient times connected the villages of the coast to those of the hinterland, among which there was intense traffic of commerce.

Walked with the appropriate clothing and in the coolest hours of the day, it is an unforgettable experience. From this route, you can continue to hike on the coast and reach the Path of the gods until Positano.

HIKING
From the B & B La Barbera, in Via Costantinopoli, you cross the village of Vettica Maggiore and you go upstream of the town of Praiano, among the lively crops in the characteristic garden terraces and the white houses that gradually give way to the Mediterranean vegetation with its aromas and spontaneous colors.

The path is well traced and then a climb is undertaken. From here on you continue on a well evident trail. You reach the bed of the creek Praia and cross the path that descends from Santa Barbara, where there are the ruins of an old monastery.

Continuing the uphill path you will cross a wood of ash and oak and you will reach a wall and a zig-zag path on a rocky slope. The path n. 80 comes out near a rural house, deviates on a bridge and after about 300 meters you reach Piazza Paolo Capasso in Bomerano, a hamlet of Agerola.

From the b & b La Barbera in via Costantinopoli, you take the steps that reach the church square of San Luca. You take the steps of Via Gradillo that lead on the Amalfi State road.

From this start there are several steps descents to the sea. We recommend the one that leads from the main church to Cala di Rezzola, which arrives near the medieval tower.

From the Ponte della Praia, the bristly path leads to the pastures of the Grottole locality. Along the path, you can admire the typical Mediterranean vegetation: the carob trees, the aromatic rosemary bushes.

From the locality Pennola the path is bordered by Agaves and prickly pears and leads to Punta Sant’Elia. Walking along the romantic and floral Strada dell’amore, the Love’s Route, you reach the church of Sant’Elia.

From the B & B La Barbera, through Via Costantinopoli you reach the homonymous Church of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli. From the square, there is an incredible view of the Gulf of Sorrento.

Behind the church, the sea-view goes from Praiano to Sorrento and from Furore to the Cilento coast. Walking on you reach the locality of Tuocco, from which you can admire a wonderful view of Positano and Capri.

THE CAVE OF THE DEVIL
At the Grotta del Diavolo, on the state road to Amalfi, before the Gallery of the Praia, on the left, between the rock walls, you can admire the artisan crib made by Michele Castellano.

The crib shows the village of Praiano with its characteristic houses with domes, alleys, the church and the sea with the fishing boats. The inhabitants of Praiano are reproduced between the terraces of lemons and the artisans while they perform their typical jobs.

THE BEACHES
Walking along the steps from the b & b La Barbera, you reach the wonderful Piazza di San Gennaro; after having walked the underlying Via Masa, you meet the steps to reach the Cala della Gavitella, the beach of the Amalfi Coast where the sun sets later.

Overlooking Positano, the small islands of Li Galli and Capri, in the area of Vettica Maggiore, are protected by the promontory on which stands the Torre del Grado.

Near the Cala della Gavitella you can admire a natural swimming pool inside a cave, called the Fontana dell’Altare. In summer the beach is equipped with restaurants with exquisite local cuisine.

THE TOWER DEL GRADO
La Torre del Grado is visible from La Barbera bed & breakfast and can be reached through a pleasant walk along the steps from Via Costantinopoli to the wonderful square of the Church of San Gennaro.

Continue along the Via Masa, a romantic path full of flowers, among the picturesque houses on the sea and going left, after about 100 meters, after a hotel, on the right, there is the staircase to the Torre del Grado.

The Torre del Grado was built during the viceregal period for the defense of the Amalfi Coast. Nearby is a quay where you can dive.

LA PRAIA & THE TOWER ON THE SEA
At the mouth of the Vallone di Praia, between spectacular sheer cliffs, the beach of Marina di Praia opens up. Among the white houses of the small fishing village, there is the Church dell’Annunziata.

During the festivities of March 25th, a procession reaches the beach and the sea is lit by the lights of the boats. On the beach, there are various restaurants that offer exquisite traditional cuisine, diving centers, and boat rentals.

From Marina di Praia boats depart for excursions to the caves of Suppraiano, the Grotta dell’Africana, the discotheque on the sea of Praiano, or for boat trips along the coast and towards Capri.

From the Marina di Praia you can take a spectacular walk along the path carved into the rock until you reach the promontory where stands the cylindrical tower Torre a Mare, built in the sixteenth century to protect the coast.

THE LUMINARY OF SAN DOMENICO
Praiano preserves many churches throughout its territory. At Vettica Maggiore, below the state road Amalfitana, you can visit the main church of Vettica Maggiore, dedicated to San Gennaro, with its beautiful dome of multicolored ceramic tiles.

The spectacular panoramic terrace, in early August, is the protagonist of the extraordinary Luminaria di San Domenico, an event that attracts thousands of visitors every year.

In the upper part of Praiano there is the sixteenth century Church of S. Luca, in the area of the Antico Seggio, which has a baroque structure and a majolica floor dating back to the 18th century. San Luca is celebrated three times a year: October 18th, Monday in Albis and the first Sunday of July.

Walking through the alleys and the steps of the village, embellished with multicolored plants, there are various votive aediculas. The oldest bear the date of the eighteenth century and were once realized in memory of an event.

Illuminated at night accompanied the traveler through the streets of the village. The charm has remained unchanged over time and visitors are enchanted by the scents of nature and the wonderful panoramic views along the paths and the stairways.
