Le Clos d’Amboise is a sumptuous 17th century house converted into a charming hotel in 2003 and upgraded into a luxury hotel in 2011 retaining its character.

Hotel Le Clos d’Amboise is located in the very heart of the Royal City of Amboise, in the authentic and picturesque historic part of the city that contains Francois Ist’s chateau, and further on, Leonardo da Vinci’s residence, the Clos Lucé.

Hotel Le Clos d’Amboise stands apart with its discreet charm, its situation in Rue Rabelais a few paces from the pedestrian shopping streets which criss-cross the old city and with the large house opening onto the park and terrace overlooking an immense lawn with century-old trees. The swimming pool nestles among rose bushes and cedars.

Right next to the Royal Castle, it is a sumptuous 17th century house converted into a 4-star character hotel in 2003 and entirely refurbished in 2011.

Everything which speaks of the house’s history and gives it its character has been conserved: the floor of the reception hall with its cabochon tiling, the staircase serving the upper floors, and the magnificent 18th century Versailles oak parquet in two salons.

The wood panelling, the mullioned windows, and all the fireplaces have been preserved, often with magnificent gilt-framed mirrors. In the converted attic, a long corridor with exposed beams serves rooms where the roof trusses can be seen.

In 2011, the owners installed a lift which stops at the main house’s two floors and at the basement which leads to the sauna. The stables converted into guest rooms have kept their exposed beams.

In the calm of the Hotel Le Clos d’Amboise, you will breathe the gentle pleasures of life. It is the old France of Kings, the heart of the valley of Loire castles.

A shelter has been set up under the trees to protect the bicycles of those who like to pedal along the 200 km of cycle track alongside the Loire. These days noone rides a horse any longer, and the stables have been converted into charming guest rooms, and into a seminar room.

After the hunt, the fishing, the golf, the canoe trips on the Loire, the finest Loire castles are all within a few kilometres of Amboise (Blois, Cheverny, Chambord, Chenonceau, as well as Chaumont, Loches, Azay, and Chanteloup ), you can stay for days and days at Hotel Le Clos d’Amboise without quenching all your dreams of castles.

The Chateau des Arpentis is built in the village of Saint-Regle, an old fief of chateau d’Amboise. It is surrounded by a moat from the 17th century and is erected at the bottom of a hill, not far from the Lamasse stream.

In the middle of a peaceful park of thirty hectares and entirely restored in 2007-2008, the chateau is prepared to receive guests who are spending a pleasurable stay in the heart of the Loire Valley.

The rooms are spacious, comfortable, and have one or several windows overlooking the park, with air conditioning and other modern comforts. You will enjoy the lodge where you can read and relax near the fireplace.

In choosing the chateau des Arpentis, you will be satisfied of this peaceful place, which is also close a number of places of interests (chateaux, museums, vineyards etc).

The chateau des Arpentis was at one point a fief and une Seigneurie of Amboise. It was built on the village of Saint-Regle, an old fief of chateau d’Amboise, not far from the Lamasse stream.

THE HISTORY
The location of the village is remarkable, not far from la cite Royale d’Amboise, which is located in the heart of Touraine, in between Tours and Blois. The first well-known lord was Christophe Thomas in 1313. Around 1410, the chateau became the property of Jean du Bois, majordomo of the Duke of Guise.

During 16th century, it became the property of the military, and then in 1612, Louis Charles d’Albert, Duke of Luynes, became the owner, and it is also where King Louis XIII was invited to diner on the 20th of June 1619.

During the 17th century, the terrace was built on the walls that surround the moat and castle. The castle was restored in the 19th century. Now, the property is in the center of a peaceful park of 30 hectares, which intersect the Lamasse stream and a pond.

All of the rooms have a different charming decoration to them, with murals and tapestries. Some of the bathrooms are equipped with showers and bathtubs and others only have bathtubs.

Breakfast is served in a large room on the ground floor with French doors that open onto the terrace, and from time to time, if the weather is nice, you can eat breakfast outdoors on the terrace.

This beautiful and spacious room with 3 large windows overlooking the park and the pond is located in the attic of the castle. Open space room with no separation with the bathroom.

MARGAUX & JULES
Two connected rooms sharing the bathroom. One of the room, in a tower, has a double bed, the other one has 2 twin beds. The shared bathroom has bath and shower.

CHAMBRE ROSE 
A few steps lead to this spacious room with wooden floors and exposed beams. Its large window overlooking the park. The bathroom has a old bathtub, a shower and a window also overlooking the park.

DONATIEN
Cosy room with dressing, bathroom with bath and shower and separate toilets. A dedicated staircase leads to the room. The large window is overlooking the park and the pond.

THE ORANGERY APARTMENT
Few steps of the Chateau, in the former Orangery, this apartment could accommodate up to 5 people. It has 2 bedrooms and 1 living space with kitchen. Mainly under the rock, it’s naturally fresh in summer and well heated off season, a peaceful place to enjoy the view on the park.

The master bedroom, a 50m² vaulted room with large windows open on the park, has a canopy bed, a sitting space with a wood stove and a desk. The bathroom is open on the bedroom. It has a large bathtub and walk-in shower. Separate toilets.

The children room is connected and also has his private entrance. This 50m² vaulted room has 3 single beds with canopy. The bathroom (20m²), open on the room to enjoy the daylight, has a large bathtub, walk-in shower and separate toilets.

A short corridor leads to the fully equipped kitchen. The living area with wood stove and the terrace overlooking the park, allow you to enjoy your stay. Every morning, we deliver fresh bread and home cooked croissant as well as all you need for breakfast.

THE SURROUNDINGS
The chateau des Arpentis is situated at the center of the most prestigious castles of the Loire Valley and only a few kilometers from the chateau Renaissance d’Amboise, which overlooks the magnificent Loire, as classified by UNESCO

Several French kings spent time here. Francois 1er invited Leonardo da Vinci to Clos Luce, the last residency of the painter, and it is here where you can admire some of his famous inventions.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the chateau, which belonged to Queen Catherine de Medicis and later Diane de Poitiers, knew an intense period of intellectual activity as the Le Ray de Chaumont family welcomed, one after the other, the sculptor Nini, the American Benjamin Franklin and writer Germaine de Staël.

CHATEAU DE BLOIS

Welcome to the Château de Chissay, previously built in the 16th century as a royal residence under Charles VII, and transformed in 1986 as a Hôtel with 27 personnalized guest-rooms and 5 Special Suites. We welcome you here, as a special guest for a very “Loire Valley Châteaux experience” out of time.

History (with a capital H) has embraced Chissay over the centuries. Situated between Montrichard and Chenonceaux, this former fortified castle was built under Charles the 7th for Pierre Bérard, chancellor of France and husband to Anne de Rondard. Charles the 7th and Louis the 11th both stayed here, as evidenced by many royal acts.

On the 19th of April 1543 Bérard sold the estate to Philibert Babou, Lord of Bourdaisière, the king’s treasurer and superintendent of finance, for £16 690. The castle remained in the family, then passed into the hands of Duke of Choiseul until the eve of the revolution. Choiseul ceded Chissay to his friend Jean-Baptiste du Buc, a man of merit and good fortune who grew to know well the revolution’s prisons.

On his death in 1795 Chissay became the property of Marie-Jacques Gaigneron, Count of Marolles, allied through his mother to Empress Josephine. Gaigneron remained the owner of Chissay and was also the town mayor for more than half a century. The castle has known varying fortunes, and the original architecture has been added to by its various owners.

Acquired in the twentieth century by Baron and Baroness of Gartempe, then passed to their descendants the Costa de Beauregard, it was this family that welcomed Mr Paul Raynaud in June 1940. The Prime Minister established his headquarters here, and political and military conferences were held in the main salon.

Chissay castle received General Weygand, the ambassador of Great Britain, ministers and dignitaries who liaised with the republic’s president residing 30km away in Cangé castle.

On the 12th of June, General de Gaulle arrived at Chissay to present Paul Reynaud with his ‘reduit breton’ plan (a joint British/French strategy to defend the Brittany peninsula against the Germans.) Chissay witnessed the agony of the 3rd republic, the future of France was determined behind the thick walls of the castle.

Located in the XIIIth Century Dungeon, with lift access and then by a stoned spiral staircase, this amazing 67m2 room has 2 levels separated with a glass floor : On the first level, king size bed which may be separated into 2 single beds.

The bathroom is on the second level beneath a remarkable vaulted “Tuffeau” local stone and an outstanding 360 ° view on the Park and on the Cher Valley. These room cannot receive extra beds, only a baby cot.

DUC DE CHOISEUL & CHARLES VII 
Located in the Château, with lift access, these 2 suites (72 m² et 67 m²) are composed with a master bedroom with exposed wood and beamed ceiling, ornemental fireplace and a view overlooking the pool, the park and the valley. Fully equipped bathroom and separate toilets. The extra private lounge room in the XVth Century can be converted into a children’s bedroom.

TROGLODYTE SUITE
Located on the East terrace, on the edge of the park, this unique 92 m2 space is carved into the local white cliffside, the “tuffeau” stone. The Loire valley Châteaux are made out of this local stone. The Suite has a fully equipped bathroom, separate toilets and it can easily offer the option of two extra beds. Garden furniture is made available.

SUPERIOR ROOM
Located in the Château, very spacious rooms (44 m² minimum), generally with high ceilings, with a beautiful view over the terrace or the inside courtyard or the parc and the Valley or the Château entrance.

They have fully equipped bathrooms – mostly decorated with an original mosaic – and separate toilets. They can offer the option of one large bed or two single beds. Some of them offer an extra private lounge room.

SWIMMING POOL ROOM

Welcome to Relais de Chambord, the only hotel in the château’s enormous private 5,440-hectare estate. Deep in the French countryside, a unique journey to remember is about to start.

Our history dates back to the middle of the 16th Century when King Francis I decided to create a royal hunting lodge. Although it was intended to be a hunting lodge, it became the largest Renaissance castle in the Loire Valley: The Château de Chambord.

The lodge includes an extensive 13,500 acres of enclosed forest as well as a neighbouring building, originally designed as the King’s stable, that nowadays is the complex that is Relais de Chambord. In 2018, Relais de Chambord was reborn as a contemporary boutique hotel that still preserves its authentic charm.

The project of renovation into luxury accommodation was carried by the renowned French architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte, with the utmost respect for its unique architecture and natural surroundings.

Once we arrive, we are surprised by this unique location, facing the Château de Chambord, but also by the hotel’s façade, modern yet classic at the same time.

While the complex has been restored into a contemporary accommodation, the hotel still maintains part of the original façade, including a keep, and has recreated the traditional window frames in red so typical of the Chambord region.

Inside the hotel, everything has been carefully restored, using raw materials and signature furniture that creates a minimal and sophisticated ambience. Spaces where modern harmoniously blends with historical, through numerous pieces that allow us to travel back in time.

Breakfast at Le Grand Saint-Michel is available for hotel guests every day from 7.30h. to 10.00h., as a salty/sweet buffet including a selection of bread, pastries, muffins, jam, honey, cheese, charcuterie, smoked salmon, eggs on request, hot drinks and fresh fruit juice.

The menu includes fresh salads and burgers, as well as pasta dishes. Fast food options with a variety of sandwiches, ice creams, “crêpes” and pastries are also available to take away.

THE CHÂTEAU
Rarely occupied throughout the centuries, the Château de Chambord keeps much of its original appearance; a medieval structure with a Renaissance execution, a style Francois embellished his surroundings with.

ITALIAN ARCHITECTURE AND LEONARDO DA VINCI
He loved Italian architecture, and in particular the work of Leonardo DaVinci, so much that in 1516 the king invited the polymath genius to sojourn in the French court as “premier painter, architect and engineer of the king”.

The greek cross-shaped design of the keep, double helix staircase and the sealing system on the terraces reveal the work of Leonardo da Vinci in the Château de Chambord.

THE PARK

BIKE RIDES
Chambord is one of the favourite destinations for bicycle lovers. Its Renaissance castle, the forest and its historic village make it a romantic setting for cycling. At Relais de Chambord, we have all-road bikes and e-bikes at our guests’ disposal for hire, to enjoy a day exploring the outdoors that surrounds us.

The Domain has signposted 20 km of safe routes without technical difficulties, making this activity suitable for all levels. Furthermore, this activity is perfect for family cycling, since the paths are mainly composed of green lanes, being, therefore, traffic-free.

Wonder around the Château de Chambord before returning to the forest and its unique wildlife. Among the greenery, an outstanding diversity of flora and fauna have made their home here.

If you are lucky you may see several species from non-native (for example, the Corsican mouflon, introduced in 1950) to a wealth of regional forest animals (such as stags, wild boars, roe deers, the bird population or even salamanders).

Moreover, the cycle routes “Les Châteaux à Vélo” and “La Loire à Vélo” cross the area and lead to other castles or to the banks of the Loire. Relais de Chambord has the Accueil Vélo – La Loire à Vélo label.

WINE TOURISM
The Loire Valley vineyards represent 800 km of wine routes (from Chalonnes-sur-Loire to Sully-sur-Loire), passing by exceptional landscapes, historical monuments and very nice appellations.

In the Loire Valley, there is a wide variety of wines, due to a great diversity of climates and soils. The range of grape varieties for Loire Valley wines (24 varieties) is unique in the world.

The vineyard has 51 appellations and 4 PGIs over 57,200 hectares of vines. During your stay at Relais de Chambord, you will have the opportunity to discover some of these wines, in particular AOC Cheverny, Cour-Cheverny or even Crémant de Loire.

You will be able to discover for instance the Domaine Daridan in Cour-Cheverny, the Domaine de la Plante d’Or and the Domaine de Montcy in Cheverny or the Domaine du Vardet in Mont-près-Chambord.

For a more unusual experience, an all-terrain segway vineyard tour is also offered by Gyroway departing from Domaine Daridan. It alternates between driving in the vineyards and in the forest before closing this pleasant moment with a wine tasting.

WINE TASTING
You can also taste the regional wines at the Maison des Vins de Chambord (« House of Wines of Chambord », from Easter to early November) located on the Place Saint-Louis, at the cooperative cellar of the winegrowers of Mont-près-Chambord, or simply by stopping in different domains.

THE VINES OF CHAMBORD
Take a walk along the vineyards of Chambord. This wine project is a historical, heritage, ecological and economic project launched in 2015.

Located near the old farm of l’Ormetrou, 1,400 meters from the castle, the vines of Chambord extend over 14 hectares and consist of several historical grape varieties, including Romorantin, imported into Sologne by François Ier, Pinot noir, cultivated in the domain in the 18th century under the name of the grape variety “Auvernat”, or the Orbois or Menu Pineau, originating in the Loire Valley.

The first harvest of Chambord wine was carried out in September 2018. Bottles of the wine of Chambord can be bought at the château’s boutique.

CHÂTEAU DE CHEVERNY

Located between Blois and Chambord, this impressive castle is one of the best preserved castles in France and worth visiting to admire both its classical and Renaissance architecture, sumptuous interiors and charming gardens. As a matter of fact, Château de Cheverny served as inspiration for Hergé, the author of Tintín.

CHÂTEAU ROYAL DE BLOIS

Located in the city center of Blois, this is one of the castles that was declared a World Heritage Site in 2000. This remarkable structure includes four architectural styles with a 13th-century Medieval fortress as well as Gothic, Renaissance and Classical wings.

PARC ET CHÂTEAU DE BEAUREGARD

With lovely English-style gardens and full of history, this sophisticated castle located in the center of the Loire Valley was also declared a World Historical Monument.

Its Renaissance architecture, museum and the 40-acre landscaped park makes this castle the perfect choice for families to relax while enjoying the natural beauty of the region.

CHÂTEAU DE TALCY

If you have extra time, we suggest you to visit this charming Renaissance castle. Lying to the north of the Loire River, you can tour through some of its interior spaces, each one with its own story.

DOMAINE DE CHAUMONT-SUR-LOIRE

Experience an exceptional panorama over the Loire, learning about the turbulent history of this Renaissance-style castle. The vast estate also houses stables, a park and a space for arts and nature. It is particularly known for its Garden Festival, an exhibition of contemporary gardens from new designers, happening every year from April to October.

CHÂTEAU DE CHENONCEAU

A succession of women, including Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Médicis, built this castle and its history, the reason why it’s also known as “Château des Dames”.

CHÂTEAU ROYAL D’AMBOISE

Formerly a medieval fortress, the Château d’Amboise became the residence of the Kings of France during the Renaissance.

Many European intellectuals and artists were invited there, such as Leonardo da Vinci, who now rests in its chapel. It overlooks the Loire and has a collection of extraordinary Gothic and Renaissance furniture.

CHÂTEAU DU CLOS LUCÉ – PARC LEONARDO DA VINCI

The former fortress of the Amboise Family became the summer residence for the Kings of France after being acquired by Charles VIII. Furthermore, Francis, I offered the castle to Leonardo da Vinci, who lived there for three years, until he died in 1519.

Nowadays, the château organizes visits to the gardens of Leonardo and his room, which has restored workshops and samples of his inventions. Among all its beauty, we stand out its arches crossing the Cher river, its double gallery and its magnificent gardens, including a flower garden.

THE COSSON RIVER
The image of the castle surrounded by a canal reminds us of fairy tales, transporting us to a time when moats were built to protect royalty from possible robbers. However, do you know the real history of the canal? Here are some curiosities about the Cosson river and how to enjoy it during your stay at Relais de Chambord.

When the château de Chambord was constructed, king Francis I primary concern was regulating the flow of the Cosson river, since the meandering waters created a hostile environment around the castle. The idea was to divert some of the water from the Loire to the château. These project, however, never came to pass.

It was not until the reign of Louis XIV that major projects were undertaken to landscape the areas around the castle. The path of the Cosson was regulated but it followed the curves of its original course.

The project included banking up the earth around the castle, to raise it to a level that would flood less. Retaining walls were then built to encircle this artificial terrace, first on the moat side of the château and then at the west and southeast ends.

Finally, the canalization of the Cosson was undertaken, taking shape the current structure of the space. Now that you know the history, we suggest you two activities on the Cosson canal.

BOAT RIDES
From the beginning of April to the end of October, The Domain offers leisurely boat rides around the castle, with electric boats and rowing boats.

This activity is perfect for families that are looking for a fun, different and ecological way to see the castle’s architecture up close, but also for couples that wish to experience a romantic sunset in a calm and quiet environment.

The canal that surrounds the castle will offer you a postcard view of Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece worthy of being photographed, as well as beautiful views over the French Formal Gardens, renovated in 2017.

FISHING
The Domaine offers the possibility of fishing in the stations located in the Cosson canal. The nature reserve is full of fish, including large species such as carp, predators or even pike, catfish and pikeperch.

To preserve some fish communities, when fishing Carp, Pike perch and Pike, the fish will be returned to the water as soon as possible, using one hook per line, barbless. However, Catfish as well as small fish caught by hand can be kept for personal consumption.

There are some limitations that fishermen must know before fishing in the canal. Thus, if you are interested in booking a fishing spot, we recommend you to contact the Domain so they can provide you with all the information.

The Grotteaux is not a chateau to be visited like a museum. It is a chateau that is lived in and all the objects around you have a personal significance – it might be the memory of a loved one, of a journey, of a day spent in Paris, a moment shared, or of an enjoyable read.

The living rooms and bedrooms have been restored and decorated to create a welcoming, authentic, comfortable, warm, soft, elegant, harmonious, surprising, luxurious, original, restful, simple, useful and voluptuous atmosphere!

A place filled with history
In the park, on the right bank of the Cosson, the standing stone of the Grotteaux is proof of a very ancient human presence. The present chateau was built in 1620 by Guillaume Ribier on even older foundations which can be seen in the quite beautiful vaulted cellars.

King Louis XIII particularly appreciated this high-ranking magistrate and member of parliament from Blois. On three occasions he offered him a role as minister, most notably on one occasion when he came to the Grotteaux with Cardinal Richelieu on his return from the siege of La Rochelle in 1628.

But Guillaume Ribier always refused these offers, preferring to concentrate on his local duties and the quiet life at the Grotteaux, where he could pursue his two great passions: writing (notably his ‘Memoirs of State’) and his collection of books.

Guillaume Ribier was the instigator of the reconciliation between King Louis XIII and his mother Marie de Médicis. He met her very regularly during her exile in Blois.

The Emperor’s trees
In 1760 the Lenfernat family, then owners of the Grotteaux, extended the accommodation by adding a pavilion onto the existing building.

For a short period after the French Revolution, Charles-Joseph Bagieu, then Paymaster General of the French Army, a friend of Napoleon Bonaparte, and a passionate botanist, built the orangery.

The Emperor arranged for seeds and plants, brought back by a botanical expedition to Louisiana, to be sent to him and asked him to acclimatise them in the park of the Chateau des Grotteaux.

This is why we can still admire along the riverbanks the most beautiful of all Autumnal trees – the bald cypress. The chateau has been listed in the inventory of historical monuments since 1954 and its park since 1997.

The spirit of the Grotteaux

As soon as you pass under the great gateway you immediately feel protected by the high walls. As you come round the drive, more often than not surprising bobbing roe deer, you will discover the Grotteaux , sober and majestic in its verdant setting on the banks of the River Cosson.

As you read the Latin quotations that greet you over the front doors you realise that they are an invitation to feel well in this place (TECUM HABITA) and to do whatever your fancy takes. (ARBITRII HIC TIBI IVRA IVI).

When you read the saying CARPE DIEM on the face of the sundial you realise that you are being politely requested to make the most of the moment. When you read PERENNET UT AMNES on the facade overlooking the Cosson you realise that the chateau will last there as long as there is a river.

When you walk into the great drawing room and are greeted by Guillaume Ribier, whose portrait hangs over the fireplace, you will be amazed by the interior decorations and curious to translate the numerous Latin maxims that he has left for us there.

And so you will be profoundly touched by the beauty, the simplicity, and above all the serenity of the place, Guillaume Ribier’s personal paradise, dedicated to peace and intelligence.

The Rooms

The living rooms and bedrooms have been restored and decorated to create a welcoming, authentic, comfortable, warm, soft, elegant, harmonious, surprising, luxurious, original, restful, simple, useful and voluptuous atmosphere!

A piece of cloth, an object or a painting are the inspiration for the choice of colours and materials. The bedding, the focal point of the bedroom, has been chosen minutely carefully to provide the most restful experience.

Magazines, novels and art books have been carefully selected and are available in the great drawing room and in the bedrooms. A continental breakfast is served in the dining room and hot drinks are also available to help yourselves all day long.

Suite Du Cardinal
In the entrance is a ‘Bird and Thistle’ print by Brunschwig. The grace and softness of these birds and palm leaves have been the guide to the decoration of this very harmonious suite.

Nature is omnipresent in this bedroom thanks to its double aspect over the park and the Cosson. The sofa in the salon can be turned into a very comfortable bed for two people.

A hidden door leads to a charming bathroom decorated with Briare enamel work. The bedroom has its own large shower room. There is a separate lavatory to be found near the door.

Chambre De Poseidon
Poseidon and Hestia, painted in grey in the 17th century have been restored and they gaze down on this bedroom with its muted tones provided by the natural linen finish to the walls.

Calming views of the Cosson and the Cheverny vines are to be had through the GP Baker curtains. A skylight lights the large Italian shower which is made from Briare enamel work. There is a separate lavatory.

Chambre De Zeus
The gods of Olympus, Zeus, Athena, Apollo and Artemis were painted in grey on the walls of this bedroom in th 17th century and provide the backdrop of its exceptional décor. All the furniture is very charming, whether it be the Louis XVI canapé, the Louis XV chest of drawers or the davenport desk.

The views over the Cosson and the slopes of vines of Cheverny only serve to accentuate the majesty that emanates from this bedroom. The bathroom, which benefits from the same view, is light and spacious. There is a separate lavatory.

Weddings and family reunions
The Grotteaux is a magical place to organise those important moments in life which will leave unforgettable memories. The chateau and its thirty-three hectare walled park, both of which are listed on the inventory of historical monuments, and its river all provide a unique setting.

The tennis court and swimming pool will allow you to relax and get everything ready in the run up to the big day. The orangery, which can welcome 150 guests, can be extended by the addition of a marquee. Each wedding or family reunion is a bespoke event and will be priced according to what kind of organisation is required.

Conferences
The Grotteaux is the perfect place for a works conference, perhaps to reinforce a team spirit, put a new strategy in place or organise a meeting of the sales team.

Although the Grotteaux is only one hour and a half hours from Paris, you will all find yourselves able to have a complete break from your normal routines and a rest from the rush of the city.

You may want to benefit from Gaël du Halgouet’s experience in organising meetings and brainstorming sessions. Alternatively he would be available to help you train your sales team.

Work sessions can be followed by sport (tennis, swimming, cycling) and cultural visits with a private guide to the most beautiful of the Chateaus of the Loire, all of them close by to the Grotteaux.

Adventure sports can also be organised: you might want to fly over chateaus in a microlight, a biplane or a hot air balloon. A bespoke quotation can be provided for each conference, depending on your requirements.

Filming and photo shoots
The unusual atmosphere of the Grotteaux is perfectly suited to film and documentary work. Producers particularly appreciate the high walls surrounding the park which keep all uninvited interest and distractions at bay.

The exteriors and the beautiful rooms of the chateau can be hired for photo shoots. Your products will be greatly enhanced by the fresh, new internal decorations. For such projects sole usage of the chateau can be organised.

Sample the life of the chateau in the chateau!
This is really a quite unique concept in France: we live in an adjoining pavilion and the use of the chateau is dedicated to our guests! So, your continental breakfast is served in the great dining room.

Whether it is warmed by the tiled wood burning stove in the winter or bathed in bright sunshine that streams through its four tall windows in the summer, the great drawing room is available to you whenever you wish to read or to relax.

Pianists can play the grand piano, built by Gaveau, one of the most prestigious French makers and a native of the region. You can help yourself to tea or coffee and make yourself comfortable on the sofas. Art books and books about the region and its numerous chateaux are available for you to peruse.

Plough up and down the pool like an Olympian or just have a leisurely swim!
Settled harmoniously into the surroundings, the swimming pool is a convivial place to meet. Built on the site of old orchard the pool is a real suntrap.

The pool surrounds are made of natural stone, and the turquoise water is as limpid as the most beautiful of lagoons. The size of the pool (19 by 8 metres) leaves plenty of room to swim lengths … or just simply to laze around. A powerful heat pump keeps the water at a most agreeable temperature.

Battle it out on the court or just have some fun hitting a few balls!
Out of sight but not far at all from the chateau, the hard tennis court, built in 2016 with a fast-drying surface, means that you can play even if the weather conditions are not ideal. Both racquets and balls are available.

Take a boat trip on the Cosson or fish from the banks!
The Cosson rises in the Sologne and flows past some of the most beautiful chateaus: La Ferté Saint Aubin, Le Lude and above all the grandiose Chateau de Chambord.

The luxurious vegetation, the white sandbanks and the many little islands give the river much charm. It is a living place, inhabited with a large number of different species: beavers, otters, king fishers, ducks etc. When the water levels are sufficiently high, a romantic river trip is a must!

The Cosson is very well-stocked with fish. On a sunny day in summer you will carp that grow well over eight kilos, but there are also pike, pikeperch, perch and many other freshwater species.

You love fishing but you forgot your rod? Don’t worry – we will lend you the equipment necessary to go after some underwater carnivores!

A walk or a quiet meditation in the forest!
Watch the animals of the forest, pick mushrooms, admire the rare species of plants – a walk in the park and the woods is a most enjoyable pastime. When the weather is wet we can lend you some boots.

Set your own pace on the surrounding cycle paths!
The Region, in conjunction with the organisation ‘la Loire en vélo’, has mapped out a large number of different cycle routes through the chateau country.

As you ride down a forest path from the vineyards of Cheverny, how much more enjoyable it is to discover the majestic Chateau of Chambord, at your own pace, away from the noise and bustle.

Bicycles will be available so that you may make the most of the Grotteaux’s unique position in the middle of the ‘Golden Triangle’ – the chateaus of Blois, Chambord and Cheverny are all very easily reached by bicycle.

After comprehensively defeating him at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, the English forced the King of France to seek refuge in the Loire Valley. Had it not been for the Hundred Years’ War, the valley would no doubt have not become the cradle of that artistic revolution that was the Renaissance.

At the Grotteaux you will find yourself at the very heart of the Loire Valley, classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESC0. It is made such a unique place by the sheer concentration of architectural masterpieces along the banks of the last wild river in Europe.

We strongly recommend a visit of at least one week in order to have the time to discover our region (the main chateaus, the Loire and a number of characterful towns.)

Chambord: one king’s dream
A 30 minutes bicycle ride away you will be astonished by the silhouette of Chambord, the work of the 25 year old King Francis I.

Chambord is a dream on a massive scale: more than 400 rooms, 80 staircases, including one in the form of a double-helix attributed to the Italian genius Leonardo da Vinci, 365 chimneys, a lantern-tower 32 metres tall, a forested park of 5000 hectares surrounded by a 33 km wall. A whole day, at least, is required to visit Chambord.

Unmissable chateaus near the Grotteaux
Blois (accessible by bicycle) with its four facades from different epochs. Cheverny (accessible by bicycle) a symbol of living the French way of life. Chenonceau (55 mins) the ladies’ chateau which you can explore by canoe.

Chaumont (30 mins) where you will find one of the most beautiful views of the Loire and incredible gardens which are brought back to life every year. (from April to October). Amboise and the Clos Lucé, Leonardo da Vinci’s last home.

Lesser-known wonders Chateau Gaillard
Chateau Gaillard was built by King Charles VIII on his return from the first Italian campaign. In order for him to be able to recreate ‘a paradise on earth’ in Amboise such as he had seen in the Kingdom of Naples at the Royal Palace of Poggio Reale, he brought back 22 Italian artists with him.

Dom Pacello, horticultural architect to 3 kings of France, planted the first orange trees here and created the ‘Reine Claude’ greengage fruit which he dedicated to the queen, wife of King Francis I. This hidden treasure, forgotten for decades and recently restored, should most definitely be explored

Chateau of Villesavin
King Francis I nominated his friend Jean Le Breton governor of works and finances at the Chateau of Chambord. In 1520, in order to help in his tasks, the king gave him some land at Villesavin and a workforce to build a chateau.

This soon became known as ‘the cabin on the Chambord building site’ and although there is a difference of 100 years between the two of them the Chateau de Villesavin is reminiscent of that of the Grotteaux. Situated near the Chateau of Chambord, it is the ideal destination for a bicycle ride.

We are offering a free guided tour of either the Chateau de Gaillard or the Chateau of Villesavin to any of our guests who reserve through our official website at the Chateau des Grotteaux.

Lots of other chateaus are open to be visited near the Grotteaux: Beauregard (and its unique portrait gallery), Chemery, Fougères-sur-Bièvre, Montpoupon, Montrésor (and its village, classified as one of the most beautiful in France), Talcy, Troussay (the smallest of all the Loire Valley chateaus) etc…

The Loire
On foot, by bicycle, in a boat or by canoe, you will be amazed by the soft, changing light of the wild river. We would like to suggest a very pretty bicycle ride around the Grotteaux.

You will discover the lanes and old houses of Saint Dyé, one of the most beautiful villages of the region, whose port served as a route to deliver the materials needed for the construction of Chambord.

You will be able to admire the Chateau of Ménars, which belonged to Madame de Pompadour, mistress of King Louis XV. Having crossed the river by boat at Monlivault, you will be able to investigate Cour sur Loire with its magnificent old houses and its chateau.

Zoo de Beauval
This zoo, situated 50 mins from the Grotteaux, is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the world and is an unmissable attraction. You will need at least a day to make the most of the various different shows, to see the giant pandas, hippopotamuses under water, white tigers and some 6000 other animals.

The Cheverny golf course, near the Grotteaux, on the old hunting grounds of the Chateau of Cheverny, is an 18 hole course, highly reputed for its countryside.

Flight in a hot air balloon
Most of our local hot air balloons are of a manageable size (a maximum of 7 or 8 passengers per flight). You will get a chance to discover the hidden treasures of the Loire Valley, the wildness of the river and the unbelievable fauna of the Sologne.

If you so wish, the balloon can take off from within the grounds of the Grotteaux. It is very important to book several weeks in advance and to remember that, for safety reasons, flights can be cancelled if the weather in inclement.

Arrive by helicopter after you touch down in Paris.
A helicopter will be waiting for you at the heliport of Issy les Molineaux and 50 minutes later you will touch down of the helipad of the Chateau des Grotteaux.

Fly over the Chateau of Chambord.
You will take off from the Chateau des Grotteaux for a 20 minute flight over the park and Chateau of Chambord.

Boating
Take a trip down the Loire in a traditional vessel with a guide who will explain the flora and fauna of this magnificent river.

Witness the stags rutting at the Chateau of Chambord.
From mid-September to mid-October is the season of love for the King of the Forest. At dawn or dusk, amongst the animals, you will be able to witness this magnificent, timeless spectacle in the forest of Chambord. The battles can be extremely violent as the stags fight to keep or conquer the hinds.

Spend a day in Paris
Only an hour and twenty minutes from the train station at Blois, you can make the most of a day out in the capital before heading back home again to the serenity of the Grotteaux.

THE KITCHEN GARDEN ON WATCH
At Les Jardins Sauvages, we keep an eye on Nature so as to take what she has to give… at the exact moment when she is ready to give it. Situated in the immediate vicinity of the restaurant, the kitchen garden is on watch all year round, to see what La Gacilly’s soil is producing in terms of fruit, vegetables and herbs.

The lounge bar is a pleasant place to sit for a while, no matter what the season. During summer, opening out onto the wooden terrace, it has a unique view over the kitchen garden, the works of art installed on the site and the fabulous sunsets.

THE YVES ROCHER BOTANICAL GARDENS
You are invited to touch, see, smell and feel. Yves Rocher’s Botanical Gardens extend over more than two hectares, on the hillside above La Gacilly.

Their vocation is threefold: to tell us about Man’s relationship with the plant world, to protect biodiversity, and to take us on a (sensory) journey to the cradle of the Yves Rocher expertise.

LA GACILLY FESTIVAL OF PHOTOGRAPHY
All summer, La Gacilly’s gardens and alleyways and the walls of its houses turn into photo galleries dedicated to street art.

Between June and September every year, France’s biggest outdoor festival of photography presents ethical and humanistic images that have caught the eye of the great international photographers. The La Gacilly Festival of Photography attracts over 40,000 visitors to its 30 or so exhibitions.

Welcome to the Château de Marçay, an island of calm and serenity located in an area rich in historical treasures and within a UNESCO world heritage site.

Built on the ruins of an XI century fortress, this XV century castle, converted into hotel and restaurant since 1973, welcomes you in a timeless atmosphere where the anticipation of your desires, tailoring your every moment, and the family spirit will make this place yours during your stay.

The 22 rooms of the Castle and its west wing are decorated and furnished “Haute Époque”. All different, some have views on the park, others on the Central Forecourt and 6 of the rooms offer a small private terrace with direct access to the pool. Something to suit everyone’s preferences!

THE HISTORY

The commune of Marçay, situated in the canton of Richelieu and arrondissement of Chinon, was formerly part of the Loudunais. The parish, dedicated to St Peter, formed part of the diocese of Poitiers and the Jurisdiction of the archpriest of Loudun.

The bishop of Poitiers presented to the living and the parish had 300 communicants. The church offers nothing remarkable to see.

The bell tower, which dates from the 12th century, nevertheless is fairly picturesque, and consists of a tower with two storeys, pierced by semicircular-arched windows with roman capitals on the lower storey, pointed arches on the upper, terminated by a stone arrow.

It has recently been consolidated, since recent storms caused some stone detachment. The nave appears to have been rebuilt on several occasions; it was lengthened towards the 16th century. The door on the West facade is of renaissance date; the side door, a Tudor arch, is slightly older.

On the north wall one can see a small window with an elongated trefoil, which proclaims the style of the 15th century. The other windows are more modern and have been reconstructed. The chapel in flamboyant style, founded by the family of Mondion d’Artigny, is dedicated to St John.

It was bought towards the end of the last century by Mr Luc Gilbert, lord of Fontenay. Although Marçay belongs to the diocese of Poitiers, the archbishops of Tours had important rights in the Parish.

They were the patrons of the church, and received the tithes of corn, wine, pigs and lambs from the parish, where they were represented by a notary and a provost, who in this capacity could levy fines.

In 1190 an agreement was made between Richard I, kind of England, and Barthélemy, archbishop of Tours, on the rights to be collected from Chinon and Marçay.

This ecclesiastical domain was completely distinct from the Château, lands and lordship of Marçay, a purely lay fief which never formed part of the temporalities of the archbishops of Tours, and to which we shall now turn.

On 7th April 1723, the lands and lordship of Marçay with all its dependencies were awarded to Dame Françoise Dreux, Widow of Messire Charles Odard, chevalier (knight) and Marie Dreux, her sister, the daughters of the late Guillaume Dreux, esquire, lord of Bellefontaine. This award was pronounced at the court of the bailiff of Loudun.

The land of Marçay remained in the ownership of the Dreux family throughout the XVIIIth century. In 1789 it belonged to Dame Marie Anne Dreux, widow of Charles-Antoine-Henri d’Arcemale, baron de Langon, who held it by inheritance from Charles Dreux, her brother, who had died without issue.

On Marie-Anne’s death the château and lands were sold to Luc Gilbert de Fontenay, who left it to his heirs, the family of d’Espinay. The Château of Marçay was a noble fief, directly under the royal domain and the Château of Loudun. Its buildings display the style of several periods.

One of the round towers situated to the east is surmounted by battlements with elongated trefoils, which go back to the XVth century; the other round tower also has machicolation, but they have the flamboyant ornamentation of the early XVIth century.

Another tower, octagonal in shape, and which once contained a staircase, was pierced by windows with leaf-like fringes, which also indicate the immediately pre-renaissance period. You reach the top of this tower by an elegant corbelled turret of the same period, gracefully suspended at the side of the main tower.

From the top of this tower you can see the whole plain of the Loudunais, from the plateau of La Tour Saint Gelin as far as the hills that border the left bank of the river Thouet; you can see Loudun, Saint-Léger, Le coudray-Montpensier, etc.

These three towers, with the central block of buildings and the West Wing which links them, form the old part of the Château. A second wing to the east and a fourth tower were added by Luc Gilbert.

The moats have been filled in and the high walls partly destroyed; but enough remains to form an idea of the old layout of the courtyards and front courts. In the outbuildings of the Château there was a chapel, now destroyed, which must have been contemporary with the octagonal tower.

History
The Domaine de la Tortinière is a luxury hotel at the heart of the Loire châteaux. The Amboise, Chenonceau and Blois châteaux are all worth a visit, just to mention a few. This unique setting, steeped in history, extends to the heart of the château de la Tortinière itself.

Mr and Mrs Capron bought the Tortinière from Mrs Saillard in 1954 and transformed it into a hotel in 1955. They have four daughters. It was the eldest, Denise Olivereau-Capron, who looked after the guests and ensured their well-being for the next 40 years.

Her son Xavier and Anne, his wife, both graduates of the Hotel School in Lausanne, are the third generation to manage this attractive château-hotel, which now has 30 rooms… and only time will tell if a fourth generation will continue the tradition!

The Tortinière park
The cyclamen is an extraordinary plant. It is one of the rare plants that bury their seeds thanks to a sort of spring which uncoils and plants the seed around 10cm from the mother shoot! Here’s an interesting fact – a cyclamen bulb can live longer than one hundred years!

Between the months of August and December, a carpet of pink and white wild cyclamens covers the undergrowth, putting on a magical show. Perfect for romantic walks and botanic discovery, the cyclamen flower is a symbol of the sincerity of romantic sentiments.

In the Château itself, the Suites can be found in the Château’s turrets and have a 40m² adjoining lounge and a magnificent view of the valley, so you can enjoy a real castle experience during your stay!

Familial Suite
Located in the Château or the former chalets near the château, for 3 to 4 people, with a beautiful view of the Indre valley, these 50m2 suites are spacious and comfortable, with a bedroom with double bed measuring 160×180 or 160×200 and an adjoining lounge with a very comfortable sofa bed or spare beds.

One of these suites, located in the chalet, can host up to 6 people comfortably (80m2).

A park stretching over 15 hectares

Various footpaths criss-cross the park, inviting you to take some time out to discover nature. This wooded park has a range of tree species, some of them regional and also some rarer species, like two Japanese pagodas which frame the turrets, magnificent Lebanese cedars and a superb redwood.

A heated outdoor swimming pool

The swimming pool is open from late April until mid-October, and we kindly ask guests to respect the tranquil atmosphere. A chalet changing room is available to use next to the swimming pool, equipped with showers and toilets. Towels are available to borrow at reception. Pets are not allowed at swimming pool.

Tennis court and table-tennis table

You may use the tennis court during reception opening hours. Please remember to book your court in advance at reception. Tennis and table-tennis rackets and balls are available for you to borrow.

Cooking Lessons

from March to the end of April (excluding Easter) and mid-October to mid-December only. We organise cooking lessons for groups of 8 people on various themes such as foie gras, macaroons or chocolate…

Billiards/Pool

The table is available to use in the Renaissance chalet opposite the Château. It may be used from 10am to 10pm, and we ask guests to respect the other users by not making too much noise. Children are welcome to play as long as they are accompanied by their parents.

Rowing boat on the Indre

The Indre, which flows along the foot of the park, is the perfect place for daydreaming, exploring or fishing thanks to its peaceful course through beautiful countryside. Borrow our rowing boat and let yourself be carried away by the gentle current…

Sleep in a typical Solognote home
Located 30 meters from the Château, This home features typically Solognote architecture and comprises a variety of bedrooms and suites of up to 70m2. Some rooms have a terrace overlooking the grounds or the kitchen garden.

Family Room
This family room comprises two separate bedrooms, making it perfect for families. The views across the grounds/kitchen garden are a real asset and will give you a sense of real immersion in the lush green surroundings. The two bedrooms have adjoining doors.

As both a source of enjoyment and a form of expression, gastronomy occupies a special place here at the Hauts de Loire.

Chef Dominique Pépin
Since 1986 Dominique Pépin has been working in Rémy Giraud’s shadow, the emblematic 2 Michelin starred chef, and it’s completely logical that he replace Rémy in October 2020.

By becoming the new chef at Hauts de Loire, Dominique Pépin is taking on a new challenge, he will continue Rémy Giraud’s neoclassical style of coooking, but he will of course bring his personal touch and a modern twist.

His takes on the great classics really are an ode to French heritage, incorporating game, fruits and vegetables from the vegetable garden and taking even the most demanding of guests on a rich and impeccable gastronomic journey.

In what has become a new exercise in style, Dominique Pepin’s Bistrot menu comprises a selection of carefully prepared typical dishes that reflect both the changing seasons and his sources of inspiration, served in a relaxed setting overlooking the vegetable garden.

The 2-Michelin-starred Restaurant
The cosy, well-appointed surroundings of the restaurant make it the perfect haven of peace and tranquillity in which to sample the culinary delights on offer. Chef Dominique Pépin serves up a selection of dishes representing his own take on some of the great French classics and prepared using seasonal produce.

Hare terrine à la royale, eel salad and even Sologne caviar are just some of the dishes on offer here and sure to delight even the finest of palates.

A great deal of sensitivity, creativity and incredible inventiveness goes into making this a flawless gastronomic experience, the standard of which has earned it two Michelin stars and a reputation among connoisseurs…

The Bistrot
The Hauts de Loire offers another equally inviting dining experience where guests can enjoy authentic, flavoursome dishes for both lunch and dinner.

Chef Dominique Pépin demonstrates his versatility through his deliberately selective menu adapted to the seasons and the market to create dishes rich in character, including carp sausage and smoked purée, accompanied by regional wines… an array of gourmet revelations to tantalise your taste buds.

Home-made Hauts de Loire produce
The Hauts de Loire is simply bursting with gourmet secrets, including its very own protected beehives, which you will come across if you decide to take a stroll down to the pond just a few hundred metres from the château itself.

This provides us with a generous supply of ‘home-made’ honey that is served to our guests at breakfast, used in dishes prepared by the hotel’s chef or made available to our customers, where production allows.

We also produce our own chocolate thanks to the talents of our pastry chef, Tom Duclos, allowing him to create the best pastries and other indulgent cocoa-based desserts that reflect his current sources of inspiration.

A dedicated well-being area
The Spa by Clarins includes a sauna, a hammam, treatment cabins for one or two people, and a relaxation lounge with Clarins products. The treatments available are all Clarins exclusives and the Spa staff have been trained by the brand.

The Spa is open everyday from 10am to 12pm and from 1pm to 8pm only for treatments and by appointment. Within the framework of the new standards imposed on us, we have reinvented our treatment path. As a result, the sauna, hammam, relaxation lounge and duo cabin remain closed.

Fitness Club and pool
A stay at the Hauts de Loire provides the perfect opportunity to take some ‘me-time’, and what better way to indulge than with a bit of exercise and relaxation.

Our outdoor pool is open all summer season and is perfect for a few lengths, or even just to cool off when the temperatures start to rise, whilst the nearby gym is equipped with a number of top-of-the-range machines for those who like to work out and take advantage of the many benefits that exercise provides for the body.

The changing rooms adjacent to the gym have been carefully designed to ensure your comfort and convenience.

Lessons in good taste with a double-Michelin-starred chef
Why not combine a relaxing break in the Hauts de Loire with an opportunity to improve your culinary skills with a leading chef? This is the idea behind Rémy Giraud’s Art des Mets programme, which invites both curious participants and those with a passion for gastronomy to spend a few hours at the stoves.

L’Art Des Mets
Believing transmission and the sharing of knowledge to be a fundamental part of his role, the chef provides the recipe for a dish that he will then take foodies and curious hedonists through step by step in a dedicated kitchen every Saturday and Sunday.

The class culminates in a meal where those participating in the cooking class will get the opportunity to sample the delights they have created. Sunday is all about sweet treats and gourmet lessons.

The kitchen is also reserved exclusively for budding young pastry chefs in the making once a month. Please book your cooking lesson at least 48 hours before your arrival.
