The true Balinese cuisine is like all else in Bali, a matter of contrast. There are every day foods and there are festival foods. The staple of daily fare is rice, accompanied by vegetables, a small amount of fish or meat, and a range of condiments, usually cooked in the early morning, and consumed whenever the need arises, often as snacks.

Most Balinese meals are eaten quickly and without fanfare. Dining out and in groups is not a normal social custom. Festivals are the major exception food is prepared in an elaborate and decorative manner and is eaten communally, marking the occasion as something out of the ordinary.

Ubud is now more than ever in the spotlight due to the famed book by Elizabeth Gilbert and movie “Eat Pray Love”. If I have to describe Ubud Bali in one word I would say “mystical village”.

Despite the large numbers of tourists visiting this little village with streets that are too narrow for touring buses, Ubud has been able to maintain its traditional life.

discover-mystical-village It is the meditation capital of Bali, many people come here purely to recharge their batteries from the past paced western life, here you just surrender to the energies and let go.

Ubud has been voted the 6th best city in Asia in October 2012 by the Condé Nast Traveler, it is not hard to see why; everywhere you look is paradise with dense green jungles, myriads of rice fields and beautiful tropical gardens.

Here Balinese men and women still place offerings gracefully on the side of the road and on temples; every day you will see them riding beautifully dressed on motor scooters to temples and ceremonies while holding colourful woven baskets, sometimes you can witness even up to four on a bike.

This is not a village were you should be up and running…the order of the day is to RELAX and live in the NOW. It is more a place where you’ll want to stroll around or just sit with a book and watch the colourful and delightful pictures pass by.

If you can’t resist some action though, there is the Monkey Forest where you’ll be greeted by the many Macaque monkeys. There is also the Ubud Market. This market starts off early in the morning as a food market by 11.00 am it is a maze of shops that sell everything a traveler in Bali can imagine…and more.

In Ubud and its surrounding hamlets cultural influences and artifacts are still found. Besides absorbing the cultural beauty of Ubud there are many other things to do which always seem to be intertwined with the daily village life.

For instance the nearby temples show you the historical and religious influences that are still present today while the many museums offer you the opportunity to learn about their Bali paintings, drawings, carvings and statues.

Besides this you can also actively learn about the village’s culture by participating in dance, paint, mask-making and cooking classes, for which you will do some shopping at the local market.

These courses are pretty exceptional for Bali and the tourism foundation of Ubud Bali encourage this as this is one of the ways to create a balance between tourism and the locals. Only through this balance can the natural and cultural beauty of the village be preserved.

The stunning location of the village also provides enough opportunity to explore the rice terraces or the river valleys that are found in and around the village. When walking through the panoramic scenery you will find yourself up close with the local people who are working in the fields throughout the day.

But remember once you are there, take your time and just experience it, The village is surrounded by fertile land which has resulted in the beautiful rice field terraces you always find in travel and photo books on Bali.

This is also an ideal location to explore the terraces yourself and take beautiful pictures while standing in the midst of it all and feeling part of it.

From here an unique place has emerged into a painter’s village that has attracted many people, including foreigners who have played their part in forming various painting styles.

It is not surprising to see that many artists feel at home in this village considering the mystical and inspiring setting. Today painting still plays an important role in Ubud and around.

There are many galleries where painters sell their work. Additionally there are several important art museums that show unique paintings that will create even more appreciation for this form of art.

You can continue your cultural adventure in the evening where you can choose from many Balinese performances such as the graceful Legong dance, the cool-looking Kecak-trance dance and the Jegog with its amazing sound created by playing the giant Bamboo, also the funny Wayang Kulit shadow puppet plays.

This is a great way to end your cultural day experience in Ubud Bali followed by a cocktail, glass of wine or a local Bintang in one of the many garden restaurants.

Getting Around Ubud
Ubud is an ideal place to walk around, especially if you check out the small streets and alleys on the side of every road. They lead you to amazing places such as rice fields, river valleys, temples and Balinese living court yards. Ubud Bali has three big main roads which are all one way-streets.

So you will definitely drive through them regularly if you are finding your way through Ubud by car, bike or motor scooter. The busiest and one of the longest is the Monkey Forest Road. This road starts in the south when you come into Ubud and ends all the way in the north at the crowded Ubud Market.

This street is overdeveloped with shops, restaurants and places to stay. Monkey Forest road already looks cramped, but there is even more behind the many buildings along this road.

The many alleys (gang) on both sides of the road are passages to tucked away hotels (many cheap homestays), spas and restaurants. Jalan Raya (the Royal Rd) is a road that crosses Monkey Forest Road in the center of Ubud Bali. To the left, this road leads you to the Campuhan area.

Within these sacred grounds you can start a rice field walk that goes on further north of Ubud past the ancient-looking villa complex Ibah. Another road that you’ll certainly come across is Jalan Hanoman.

Like Monkey Forest Road, this street is long and it has many shops, restaurants, hotels and homestays. Going towards Monkey Forest Rd, Jalan Hanoman comes to a fork, the right vias off to Monkey Forest Rd, whilst to the left is still Jalan Hanoman and goes on passing the ARMA museum then becomes Jalan Raya Pengosekan that takes you on to Lutundoh village.

Ubud is relatively small so if you have the time you can easily walk around and see a lot. The streets and footpaths are a little bumpy, occasionally you might find a hole or two or a loose pavementso be careful (Hati Hati) of your footing.

However look out for the colourful offerings which are placed along the streets and in front of shops. Along Monkey Forest Road there are many bicycle and motor scooter rentals, usually the price drops the longer you rent them.

Before you hop on, check the profile of the tyres are still good. It can get really slippery when it rains. An accident is the last thing you need during your well-deserved holidays… Everywhere in town you will find many private drivers sitting in the shade of a tree only to jump up when you come in sight.

Instantly they will make this driving movement with their hands and at the same time wiggle a little with their body. ‘Transportation…?’ is the first thing they say.

If you reply with: ‘No thank you…’ or ‘Tidak Teramikasi’ (pronounced as ‘tear out my car seat’), you can immediately expect the next question ‘How about tomorrow…yes?’ They are harmless but can get on your nerves after passing dozen of them within minutes.

But if you are considering touring around for a day then a private driver is what you need. Check out if you like their car and then bargain for a price that suits you.

Utilizing Polaris Buggies, guests have the option of choosing between single-seated ACE models or to ride tandem with a friend or guide in double-seated RZR models, as well as deciding the amount of laps to complete.

Your adventure starts at Koko Bambu Restaurant, a beautiful natural structure comprised of bamboo. A safety video and demonstration will be shown outlining the necessary precautions and procedures involved with handling the buggies, before helmets with visors are distributed. Then, you’ll get in your vehicle and after a brief warm up session, you’re ready to tear up the track!

The camp is set amongst the rainforests of Keliki, Ubud, where you will be blessed with the sights and sounds of nature, and cross paths with various local wildlife. The Camp is located in a dense rainforest on sloping terrain leading to the sacred Wos River in Keliki Village. Whilst accommodation on flat terrain is available, some of the tents are perched up high and are located on steep terrain.

The safety and security of our guests remain our top priority. Therefore, we politely advise that the Camp would not be best suited for families with children below six years old and guests with mobility challenges due to the nature of the camp site’s terrain. To safeguard our camp residents’ safety, security and privacy, no drones are allowed on site.

The Officer’s Tent is the social heart of our camp, a charming space filled with Bensley’s eccentric touches and full of antiques and books from a bygone era.

It is where you will meet our Capella Culturists who will plan a day of adventure, taking you to explore the villages next door to try your hand at Keliki wood-carving, while enjoying sounds of gamelan hand-played by Balinese musicians.

As dusk falls, the tent turns into a soiree with fellow campers and the high-spirited team of Capella Ubud gathering around Mad’s Spirit Box to shake up an evening bevvy or two. Connect and foster friendship over light-hearted conversations, before entering into a fun game of pool or chess.

KELIKI FARMER
Discover a peaceful Balinese lifestyle at this charming village surrounding the Capella Ubud doorstep. Keliki, a lesser-known village untouched by the influx of tourism, does have the treasure of the ancient agrarian dated back to the 1100s.

To the Balinese, rice is a direct gift from God, and consequently is treated with the utmost care and respect. Take a fascinating look at how the rice culture – planting, growing and harvesting – is linked to temple ceremonies.

In the fields, posted a sandstone shrine to which the farmers bring offerings of flowers and fruits to Devi Sri, the Goddess of Rice for her protection throughout the cultivation period. Strolling around by a sea of waving rice plants, you may encounter friendly villagers. He is taking you to his house, walking across the verdant rice terraces and forestry fields. Pak Dewa is the fifth generation of Keliki farmers, along the way you will be acquainted with the thriving seasonal ingredients as Pak Dewa harvests some vegetables and fruits for the cooking.

Meet your friendly Balinese host, Pak Dewa at the Camp’s Post. He is taking you to his house, walking across the verdant rice terraces and forestry fields. Pak Dewa is the fifth generation of Keliki farmers, along the way you will be acquainted with the thriving seasonal ingredients as Pak Dewa harvests some vegetables and fruits for the cooking.

Arriving at his house, you will be mesmerizing with the beautiful designed traditional Balinese compound. Pak Dewa explains the structure of the compound is on cosmic concepts: “houses” are seen as duplicates, both of the world and of the human body.

Corresponding to the abode of the gods, the compound has a head: the family temple. Corresponding to the middle world, it has a torso: the yard, complete with the various buildings of residence and the Indra shrine in the centre of the yard. Finally, corresponding to the lower world is the kitchen and the backyard.

Paon, or kitchen in the Balinese house, is associated with Brahma, the god of fire whose territory belongs in the south of the house. Kitchen utensils traditionally are handmade such as a thick round tree trunk for a cutting board, a rounded flat lava stone with a long hand-held wooden pole for grinding, some woven bamboo baskets, terracotta pots and the open firewood stove.

The Balinese food philosophy of cooking simple food to be consumed daily has influenced them to shop the groceries every morning to cook from scratch. Rice is a staple on the dining table, accompanied by various vegetables and meat. In the kitchen, Pak Dewa and his wife Bu Jro will share and get you to enjoy the cooking of their family recipes and savour your culinary efforts together.

FOR THE LOVE OF CHOCOLATE
As one of the top exporters of cocoa in the world, Indonesia’s chocolate is second to none. Discover the rich history of Indonesia’s chocolate production from the cocoa bean to the chocolate bar, whether you’re with your other half, your family or travelling by yourself.

Due to its geographical advantages and amazing soil, Indonesia has become famous for the growth of things like coffee and grapes. However, it is not only coffee that is cultivated and grown in the great archipelago, as Indonesia is already the world’s third largest producer of cocoa beans.

However, many are still unfamiliar with the taste of its chocolates, especially the distinct taste and different flavour notes of chocolates from different Indonesian regions. Local chocolate makers and restaurateurs are now bringing those flavours onto the global stage by introducing the concept of bean-to-bar chocolates.

Catering to those with a sweet tooth, this workshop dives into the process of chocolate production all the way from the cocoa bean to the chocolate bar. You will melt and stir the chocolate that goes into making your own bars before decorating them with your choice of toppings.

While you wait for your bars to set and harden, you next will be guided through a delicious tasting session of 10 different variations of chocolate while learning how to taste and judge the quality.

The experience finishes with the second part of the chocolate-making session, in which you remove your three chocolate bars from the moulds and wrap them up to take home as a gift to your loved ones (if they last that long that is!)

Mount Batur (Gunung Batur) is an active volcano located at the centre of two concentric calderas North West of Mount Agung on the island of Bali, Indonesia.

Mount Batur is believed by Bali’s Hindu population to be sacred and is part of UNESCO’s Global Geopark Network; located in Batur village in Bali’s Kintamani District, this active volcano rises to 1717 m above sea level and can be summited by physically fit hikers in approximately two hours.

Our expert local guides will help you climb to the ‘top of the world’ for a spectacular view of the sacred scenery and witness the sun breaking through the horizon ahead of a new glorious day – a deeply moving and momentous experience.

From Toya Bungkah village, you’ll begin your hike before dawn under a blanket of a million stars and trek safely at a pace that suits your group. From the summit you’ll watch the sky turn from dark purple to a multitude of colours like sapphire blue, burnt orange and deep pink as the sun rises over the eastern ocean.

The daylight will reveal fantastic panoramic photo opportunities of the volcanic valley and spectacular views of holy Mount Agung, Mount Abang and Mount Rinjani all the way in Lombok. Your Camp Ranger will organize a hearty breakfast to enjoy at the summit as you watch Bali wake up below – a well-deserved reward for the early wake-up call and physical exertion.

KELIKI CANVAS
Dive into the rich intricacies of the Keliki painting tradition, which depict a plethora of Balinese imagery in the tiniest of frameworks. Explore your artistic talent at Keliki Art School, which is unique to the village of Keliki and is one of the 5 recognized art forms in Indonesia.

Conceived by a farmer, I Ketut Sana in the 1970s, the Keliki style was, to a large extent, the local response to a growing tourist industry. The locals wanted to create a beautiful memento that the visitors could easily take back to their home countries. Hence, the miniature size of Keliki style paintings.

Keliki style paintings are mostly done on paper with Chinese ink and generally depict a romantic interpretation of daily life in the island’s rural villages, the beauty of the island’s flora and fauna, as well as Hindu myths and local folklore. The style is famous for its rich gradations and extreme detail, both of which demand hours of prolonged concentration from the painter.

Let your creative juices flow at Keliki Art School as you spend your morning in the very capable hands of I Wayan Gama, renowned as one of the maestros of Keliki. The family compound in which the Keliki Art School is nestled is owned by Wayan, who opened the free-of-charge painting school in 2005 in an effort to preserve the then-declining Keliki painting style.

Having begun his career as a professional painter back in 2002, Wayan later set up a painting school for children to keep traditional Keliki painting skills and culture alive. This is your opportunity to learn from the master and create an exquisite piece of art to remember your time at Capella Ubud.

THE ART OF JAMU
A traditional Indonesian medicine with incredible health benefits and a fascinating history. Ancient wisdom meets modern remedy; immerse your senses as you taste, smell, and learn all about Jamu, a traditional medicine from Indonesia made from natural materials such as roots, bark and seeds.

Jamu is claimed to have originated in the Mataram Kingdom era, some 1300 years ago. The stone mortar and pestle with long cylindrical stone mortar — the type commonly used in today’s traditional jamu making – was discovered in Liyangan archaeological site on the slopes of Mount Sundoro, Central Java.

The site and relics are dated from Medang Mataram kingdom era circa 8th to 10th century, which suggest that the herbal medicine tradition of jamu had already taken hold by then. An all-natural, anti-inflammatory elixir, made with fresh turmeric, ginger, honey and a squeeze of lemon, Jamu has been embedded in Indonesian life for centuries.

Our resident Healer will guide you through the complex medicine and its various uses and benefits and share our special Jamu recipe which stems from ancient knowledge that has been passed down from generation to generation.

You will be able to handpick the ingredients from the camp’s organic garden before following the Jamu specialist through the rice paddies to our local farmers’ hut.

You will then be taken through the process of making this celebrated health tonic as well as learning about the historical background and discussion on the various ingredients and benefits. The experience will conclude with a healthy picnic lunch that is served amidst the verdant surrounding rice paddies.

A SOUL REBORN
Experience a spiritual cleansing ritual or “Melukat” in Balinese aimed to cleanse the spirit. Join us for Melukat, a deeply spiritual tradition that is just one of Bali’s many magical rituals which involves using water as a ritual cleanser.

Melukat is just one of Bali’s magical rituals which involves using water as a ritual cleanser. The aim is to cleanse both body and mind, to refresh the spirit and dissolve away any negative influences. It is also believed to cure non-medical diseases and sickness of the spirit.

In technical terms, Melukat derives from the old Javanese word “lukat” which means to “cleanse” or “purify” while the Indonesian meaning is “to let go” or release something within us. Self- purification is sought by many Hindus and in India, the devoted throng to the banks of the holy Ganges River with a similar purpose.

Below our lush jungle gardens, you will find The Beji, an ancient spring of rejuvenating holy water just footsteps from mystical Wos River that is protected by Mythical dragons and the Wos River Temple.

Dressed in traditional Balinese attire, you will be guided through chanting and offering by a local priest. While chanting, the priest will purify you with holy water as a blessing to your body and soul.

At the end of the ritual, you will be given lucky charm bracelet “Tridatu” as a symbol of the Three Goddesses Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver, and Shiva the destroyer.

Set against the lush foliage, the cardio, power and strength training allows you to reconnect with your body and surroundings.

Outdoor exercise, also known as “green exercise,” combines two health-enhancing activities: moving your body and getting outdoors. The more challenging the terrain, the harder the body has to work to sustain an efficient work rate.

Cardio machines in the gym can provide numerous benefits but doing the same movement pattern over and over again could potentially cause an overuse injury. Walking, hiking or running on terrain that is constantly changing teaches the body how to adapt to a changing environment.

Designed to keep you on your toes, our workout session will take you through an exhilarating set of exercises utilising natural elements for cardio, power and strength training in the flourishing Ubud jungle.

Exercises are grouped into upper body, lower body, and core workouts, and incorporates aspects of military training, sports conditioning, speed, agility and strength, which is balanced with mud and a healthy dose of competition.

WATER PURIFICATION CEREMONY IN BALI
Take part in an authentic Balinese spiritual experience at the water temple of Tirta Empul. The 10th-century temple plays a key role in Balinese mythology and religious history.

After making offerings under the ancient banyan tree that shades the outer temple you will enter the inner courtyard, where your guide will lead you through a series of cleansing processes in several of the 30 water sources. Each water source has its own meaning and purpose, ranging from protection against nightmares to clearing one’s chakras.

Be prepared to spend half an hour or more in the holy waters. After visiting the fountains you take part in a final prayer, led by a priest, in the innermost temple. From here you can see the spring water welling up from the ground, stirring the dark volcanic soils of the island.

WATER SPRING BLESSING IN BALI
In the emerald green gardens of COMO Shambhala Estate you will find an ancient spring of rejuvenating holy water just footsteps from the Ayung River. Dressed in traditional Balinese attire, you will be guided through chanting and offerings by a local priest.

You will wash beside a statue of the god Ganesha, allowing the minerals to soak into your skin. While chanting, the priest will splash each participant three times with holy water. With this, you will be considered new – clean in mind and soul. This experience can be combined with a Kedara picnic.

TJAMPUHAN RIDGE WALK IN BALI
The well-known Tjampuhan Ridge walk is on the checklist of many visitors to Ubud. The trek starts at the 8th-century Gunung Lebah temple that marks where Ubud all began, at the auspicious confluence (or ‘Tjampuhan’) of the Wos rivers.

We will visit the temple while learning about the history of Ubud and the traditions associated with the location. From there we find the trailhead at the base of Lover’s Hill. Our journey continues for just over two kilometres along the ridgeline that separates the rivers, offering views of rice terraces, temples, traditional houses and distant volcanoes.

CATAMARAN SAILING
At Samabe we sail with Hobie Getaway. The Getaway lets you sail with your family, so nobody gets left on the beach. The Getaway has serious sailing legs, thanks to its powerful, mainsail-driven sail plan and its shaped underbody, which increases upwind performance without the hassle of dagger boards.

With the Getaway, there’s no worry about beaching or hull dings; its rotomolded hull is super-durable and impact-resistant. KAYAKING
