Emirates One&Only Wolgan Valley is a scenic three-hour drive from Sydney, located on Australia’s Great Dividing Range between the Wollemi National Park and the Gardens of Stone National Park, within the World Heritage-listed Greater Blue Mountains.

The resort occupies just one percent of its own 2,800-hectare conservancy. The Wolgan Valley is approximately 26 kilometres long and seven kilometres wide. Steep cliffs contrast with the gentle curve of the valley floor and a picturesque road winds along the river to reach the resort on the eastern end.

Situated within a tranquil natural setting boasting majestic valley views are six exceptionally private double treatment rooms. Holistic therapies are dispensed using Australia’s exclusive Sodashi skincare line, regarded internationally as the world’s purest spa brand.

The Main Homestead features the Wolgan Dining Room serving exceptional six-course dinner menus and à la carte selections, The Country Kitchen featuring providore-style dining on regional specialties, and the Valley Bar and Terrace Lounge with indoor/outdoor seating, an open fireplace and an expansive veranda.

Signature experiences embrace the resort’s wide-ranging conservation efforts with wildlife safaris, horse riding adventures and heritage tours, whilst hands-on Conservation Activity excursions are focused on preserving the surrounding wildlife sanctuary.

The resort offers custom event planning and idyllic venues for weddings, vow renewals and other special occasions, including the 50-guest William Walker Room.

Emirates One&Only Wolgan Valley is the first hotel in the world to achieve internationally accredited carbon-neutral certification by CarbonZero, a distinction it continues to receive every year.

Emirates One&Only Wolgan Valley is located approximately 190 kilometres or a three-hour drive from Sydney in the Greater Blue Mountains region, nestled between the Gardens of Stone National Park and Wollemi National Park.

Guests can arrive to the resort via a private chauffeur car service, or alternatively enjoy an unforgettable aerial journey via helicopter over Sydney and the Greater Blue Mountains.

HISTORY AND CULTURE
Australia is home to one of the oldest living cultures in the world. The first Australians, the Aboriginal people, came long before the pyramids were built or paintings were drawn in the caves at Lascaux. Evidence of their existence dates back some 40,000 years with ancient artefacts and stone tools unearthed in the valley.

Today, the territory is shared by four Aboriginal nations; although it is thought that the Wiradjuri are most likely to have been predominant through the ages. The name Wolgan Valley is derived from the Aboriginal word ‘wolga’ used for the vine commonly known as Old Man’s Beard, found throughout the region.

The valley’s settlement history can be traced through just two families, both of whom were intrinsically linked to the area; the Walkers and the Webbs. It was William Walker who received the original land grant and built the farmhouse still located on the property today, named the 1832 Heritage Homestead after the year it was built.

In 1836, Charles Darwin visited the Homestead during his trip to Australia whilst staying as a guest of the Walker family at their nearby Wallerawang Estate.

So taken was he by the sheer rock formations and scope of the land, the naturalist’s great-great-grandson, who makes his home in the region, suggests that Darwin’s evolutionary theory first took shape not in the Galápagos but in the primeval Blue Mountains.

Over the years, the Homestead fell into disrepair. The previously condemned site was restored to its former glory after two years of meticulous work by Ian Kiernan, an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) and former Australian of the Year.

The 1832 Homestead highlights the Aboriginal, settler and agricultural history of the Wolgan Valley, giving guests a glimpse into the lives and conditions faced by early Australian settlers.

The Homestead’s accompanying garden was also re‐established in precisely the same location and format as the original. Thriving today and bigger and better, these organic gardens supply the kitchen with an array of seasonal and organic vegetables, fruits and herbs throughout the year.

IN TOUCH WITH NATURE
We believe that time spent exploring our environment is a transformational experience which can ignite an enduring connection with the natural world. A keystone in the philosophy of our resort is a heartfelt appreciation for our surroundings, fueled by our knowledge of key issues.

REGENERATION BEGINS
Like all Australians, we are deeply saddened by the devastation of the bushfires and our hearts go out to those who have been impacted.

We are indebted to the NSW Rural Fire Service, who worked hard to control the Gosper’s Mountain fire activity in and around Wolgan Valley in December 2019. We appreciate their courage and dedication and thank them for their incredible efforts.

The valley is safe and beautiful and whilst there is visible scarring in the surrounding bushland and National Parks, the Main Homestead, villas, 1832 Heritage Homestead and immediate surrounds were fortunately spared.

Encouragingly, there are already signs of regeneration and native wildlife that call our 7,000-acre reserve home have already returned with kangaroos and wallabies roaming abundantly.

Now more than ever is the time to follow our conservation journey, join us in the valley and experience the incredible transformation of nature. Witness the regeneration of the landscape and participate in meaningful conservation work as you relax in the majesty of Australia’s iconic Greater Blue Mountains.

ABUNDANT WILDLIFE
Many areas of the surrounding bushland remain untouched, which is a blessing for wildlife biodiversity. The native wildlife that call Wolgan Valley home have already returned with kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, reptiles and birdlife roaming abundantly both close to the resort, and out on our 7,000-acre reserve.

NATURAL REGENERATION
Encouragingly, we are already witnessing incredible natural regeneration occurring in bushfire affected areas of the surrounding bushland and National Parks.

Australian plants demonstrate a range of adaptation strategies to cope with environmental stressors such as bushfires. Many of the eucalyptus trees in Wolgan Valley are currently demonstrating the coppicing responses of epicormic growth (from under the bark) or lignotuber growth (from the base of the trunk).

As a result, impacted areas of woodland are showing many patches of green.

HABITAT RESTORATION
Led by our dedicated Field Guides, habitat restoration work has commenced and will support the regeneration of the landscape. Several ‘Habitat Recovery Areas’ have been identified and will provide an important source of environmental data as we continue to monitor the recovery of wildlife and ecosystems in affected areas.

We will also access our seed bank, of over one million seeds with over 25 local native species collected by guests, to help repopulate areas of damage and support wildlife habitat projects.

WOLLEMI PINE
The original wild specimens of the ancient Wollemi Pine tree, located in neighbouring Wollemi National Park were thankfully saved. Here on our reserve, the Emirates One&Only Wolgan Valley Wollemi Pine Grove was unfortunately impacted.

Luckily, one tree in the grove remains completely untouched. The rest of the grove has been damaged by bushfire; however, all trees are attempting to regenerate and we will care for them very closely.

COLLEAGUE CONSERVATION
A love of nature and the environment permeates amongst the entire team at the resort, and we will be hosting regular Colleague Conservation Days to support the regeneration of the reserve. Teams will work to re-establish habitats in impacted areas.

This will include collecting fallen timber, organic matter and branches and using this to recreate natural habitat complexity, particularly for insects, reptiles and small marsupials who have been most heavily impacted by the bushfires.

HOLIDAY HERE THIS YEAR
We are very proud to be supporting Tourism Australia with their ‘Holiday Here This Year’ campaign, encouraging Australians and international visitors to support bushfire affected communities.

Simone Brooks, our Activities and Conservation Manager discusses the impact of bushfires, the resilience of Australians and the land, and the incredible opportunity for visitors to witness the regeneration of nature.

A SAFE SANCTUARY
Large areas of the Greater Blue Mountains were affected by bushfire and this has impacted available habitat for birds. As a result, Wolgan Valley has become a refuge, we are recording high numbers of previously uncommon bird species taking up residence in available habitats.

This provides exceptional bird watching opportunities for guests. Yellow tufted honeyeaters, satin flycatchers, lyrebirds, barking owls and many other raptors such as whistling kites are currently present in higher densities on the reserve.

A PLACE TO CALL HOME
Many areas of bushland on the reserve remains untouched, which is a true blessing for wildlife biodiversity. This means there are still many areas with mature trees, that have hollows available for wildlife to call home.

Additionally, we are planning to install nest boxes, of all different shapes and sizes, to create more homes, for those animals that have come to Wolgan Valley to seek refuge, to live.

EXPERIENCE WOLGAN VALLEY ON HORSEBACK
Discover winding trails through river crossings, scenic hills, grasslands and native eucalypt woods on our 1.5-hour guided tour. Leisurely rides pass peaceful gatherings of kangaroos and wallaroos, with beautiful horses selected for their calm temperaments and matched to your ability.
