SEYCHELLES RUM
Introduced to the islands by the British Navy and then distilled and made island-unique by locals once sugar cane became an island crop, rum has had a place in Seychelles life for generations.

Many families even have their own special blend of local herbs and spices to infuse the flavor. More recently Takamaka Rum (named after the tree found around the islands) has become an international hit.

Local cane from local farmers around Mahé is crushed and distilled on the island by Seychellois locals and then blended with locally grown fruit extracts and spices with island pure spring water for a Seychelles taste. Take a tour of the distillery on Mahé or just enjoy the flavours from your sunbed.

EXPLORE PRASLIN
True island living with a slowed-down pace, friendly locals ready-to-dance and always-smiling, impossibly pretty white sand beaches, exceptional snorkeling and a tropical jungle that’s captured the imagination for centuries.

Praslin is the second biggest island in the Seychelles collection of 115. At just 12km long and a little over 4km wide however it isn’t so big, and you can drive end to end in less than 30 minutes.

The population is around 7000 and locals are as laid-back as you might expect from a palm fringed island where the weather is a steady 30. The Creole culture reflects colonial influence and African roots in everything from the language to what’s for dinner.

Beach lovers get more than enough options from the “world’s best” of Anse Lazio, the hard to find and hard to leave Anse Georgette and the shallow bath-warm waters and powder soft sand of Cote d’Or in front of Paradise Sun Hotel. Snorkel, dive and discover a world of coral and granite shapes hiding turtles and a tropical rainbow of sea life.

Explore dense jungle just minutes from the beach, with shafts of light breaking through the canopy. Praslin jungle is home to endemic palms including the coco de mer and vanilla orchids as well as the shy Seychelles black parrot and the tiger chameleon.

41 granitic inner(2 are coralline) islands lie 4° south of the equator– including Mahé , Praslin and La Digue, the largest as well as the most visited and populated islands. These granite islands are unique as the only and the oldest mid-ocean granite islands on the planet.

These islands include the UNESCO protected Vallee de Mai on Praslin and the tiny country capital of Victoria. 72 coralline outer islands lie towards the south and south west.

Mostly uninhabited and less visited due to their remoteness (Aldabra is 700 miles from Mahé). Aldabra is the largest raised coral reef in the world a UNESCO protected site with as many as 100,000 giant tortoises, numerous endemic plants and nesting seabirds.

Only definitively identified at the beginning of the 1500s by the Portuguese the islands remained just a mark on a map for another 100 years. In the early 1600s the English were the first recorded to land on the island and enjoy some of its natural bounty after a merchant ship lost its course.

The Seychelles remained empty with the exception of pirates and passing merchant ships. After the French had claimed ownership a few decades previously it was in 1770 that the first French settlement was built. These first settlers, eventually became independent until the British in 1811 took over the islands.

During the time the Seychelles was a British colony, the British successfully captured a number of slave ships and gave the captives freedom on the islands. The British remained ruling over the island nation, but paid it little attention. Today it’s the French influence that is seen more than the British, in the language and culture.

Many of those freed slaves are the ancestors of the Creole Seychellois. Over 150 years of British rule came to an end in 1976 when the nation became independent.

The opening of an international airport, a fierce protector of the environment and culture and the unarguable tourist allure of the islands has seen a growth of different industries and a vibrant island nation with a special Seychelles charm.

Language – Creole, English and French are the official languages of the Seychelles and are widely spoken throughout the island. Driving – A valid drivers’ licence is required to drive in the Seychelles, safety belts are mandatory and there are speed limits in place.

These vary according to area, so we recommend a careful driving style. Please keep to the left side of the road. Electricity – The voltage is 240V/50Hz and the sockets in all rooms at our hotel are three-pin British standard. Adaptors are available at Reception.

The Seychelles is a tropical island with incredible biodiversity and rich animal life. We know not everyone is so sure about wildlife in tropical destinations, but the Seychelles is very special and virtually everything on the island is friendly.

Geckos – you can’t miss these luminous green friendly lizards, lazing on a palm tree or looking for some sweet pollen to lick or an insect to nibble on. Friendly and not to be afraid of, they help pollination and keep insects at bay.

Rays – the beach in front of Paradise Sun is often visited by schools of snappers, emperor fish as well as graceful rays. Rays often move in the shallow waters looking for molluscs and small crabs to eat. You might even see them break the surface of the water almost like they are flying.

Rays are generally timid but sometimes curious of human visitors. To avoid disturbing one by standing on it and risk a nasty sting it’s a good idea to shuffle your feet when you are walking through the sandy water and give them a heads up to move somewhere else.

Fruit Bats – bats might not seem cuddly to you, but you might think again when you see one of our local fruit bats hanging upside down from a tree in the jungle or flying overhead at dusk. These furry orange red mammals enjoy hard to reach fruit for dinner and are a very important part of island ecology spreading seeds and helping pollination.

SEYCHELLES BEACHES
Those picture-perfect beaches that you’ve seen in magazines, movies and on Instagram are here in the Seychelles archipelago. Discover stunning cerulean waters, paper-white and powder soft sand, shady palms and uniquely Seychelles granite boulders again and again and again as you explore the islands. Here’s our pick of some of the best beaches in the Seychelles (three of the best beaches are our Praslin neighbours!)

  • Anse Lazio (14 minutes drive from Paradise Sun). Arguably the most beautiful beach in the world. While that may seem like a big claim, it has it all. Big leafy takamaka trees, pearly white sand, impressive smooth granite boulders and yachts bobbing in the ocean.
  • Anse Georgette (30 minutes from Paradise Sun). Not the easiest to find or get to, but worth the effort if you are looking to experience the spectacular. Perhaps most impressive is the incredible ocean colours, that are even more vibrant because of the lack of rocks or coral under the water. Talk to Paradise Sun Hotel staff before you go, as the beach has a limit on the number of visitors allowed daily. The benefit is of course it remains unspoiled and never crowded.
  • Cote D’Or (In front of the hotel). One of the longest beaches in the archipelago. Over 2km of white sand, dramatic granite formations at the Paradise Sun end of the beach and palms all the way. Look out towards pretty St Pierre island or swim across for snorkeling around the tiny island of Chauve Souris. Guests at Paradise Sun hotel make use of the free snorkeling equipment, SUPs and kayaks for beach and water exploration.
  • Anse Source D’Argent (La Digue) Take the 15-minute ferry across or a boat taxi from the beach to La Digue. Best enjoyed when the tide is low, the water is shallow and the reef has some good fish spotting opportunities. Giant boulders, white sands, arched palms. This one has it all and then some. (Visitors need to pay an entrance fee to the estate that leads to the beach)
  • Anse Intendance (Mahé)1km long with the possibility to see turtle hatchings between October and February. It is beautiful, wild and mostly untouched. If you are spending a day exploring Mahé then arrive by car (taxi or hire car) or take the bus and ask for directions from the bus stop.

GARDENS
9 full time gardeners, over 5 acres of gardens, a collection of flowering and fruiting plants, and lawns that run right to the beach edge, at Paradise Sun we are very garden-proud. Our pretty French-Creole bungalows are below palm height to never obstruct your view and we’ve chosen colours that are garden complementary.

The gardens are bordered by Praslin forest and the soft grass and sandy paths make it a pleasure to walk barefoot from bed to beach. We’re caretakers of the island’s only nutmeg tree and our staff are happy to give you a guided nature walk or tell you about any of the plants you see in our gardens.

  • Lemon Grass – you’ll find it all over our gardens. Citrus smelling and great health benefits.
  • Coconuts – ask Jimmy our entertainer or join the coconut demonstration for fresh-from-the-tree milk, water and coconut flesh.
  • Cinnamon – you’ll taste it in lots of Creole dishes. Break off some bark or crunch a leaf for the full flavour.
  • Nutmeg – ask to see the island’s only tree of this sweet spice in our garden.
  • Breadfruit – this grapefruit sized fruit got its name from the fresh bread like texture of the cooked fruit and is a Creole dining staple.
  • Tortoise Fruit – with a friendly sounding name and a very unique, if not entirely pleasant smell, you’ve not seen or smelt a fruit like this one.
  • Tamarind – a classic flavour in Indian dishes, look out for these trees with their pod like fruits.
  • Frangipani – nothing says island-life like frangipani flowers. Wait until sunset and smell them as you walk through our gardens. They are most fragrant when the sun goes down.
  • Hibiscus – large soft petals and pretty reds and whites for the perfect island flower in your hair.

ACTIVITIES
From stand up paddle boarding in the Seychelles, to pool-time with the kids, from Creole cuisine discovering to first-time scuba diving, and from warm-ocean snorkeling to soft-sand beach lazing at Paradise Sun on Praslin.

SEYCHELLES WITH CHILDREN
You might be content with sun lounger and cocktail, the kids however might need a little more stimulation. As well as a child-friendly pool, and our Beach Clubhouse with snorkel masks, table tennis, volleyball and footballs for them to entertain themselves we’ve planned a calendar of weekly kids activities.

SHELL CREATIONS
Perfect for treasures to take home or make for mum. Our entertainer will teach little ones about the shells they might find on the beaches around the island and help make something special from them. Perfect for little ones.

COCONUT DEMONSTRATION
Learn how they grow, what they are used for and even how the Creole islanders use the palm fronds and leaves to weave everything from hats to baskets and brooms. And of course, taste fresh coconut from the tree. Great for all ages.

BOAT OR FOOT
Explore a little more of Praslin by boat or foot. Join us for Praslin sunsets out to sea or nature walks around our gardens.

NATURE WALK
The nature walk is great for all ages and gives a fresh understanding of the plants in the gardens and the reserves around Paradise Sun. Learn how the Seychellois have made use of virtually every plant on the island for medicine, clothing, eating and more.

Taste and smell the difference between cinnamon leaves and cinnamon bark, smell the stinky-cheese plant, see one of the only nutmeg trees on the island, learn how fruit bats open tough fruits and seeds as well as learn how island locals use plants to make a shoe, a hat, cure a cold or make dinner.

SUNSET CRUISE
Book ahead to join us on our free weekly sunset cruise. Take a trip out on the water as the sun disappears and the sky turns into shades of reds, pinks and orange. Appreciate the beauty of Praslin, stunning beaches like Anse Lazio and nearby islands like St Pierre from the ocean. Booking ahead is required and space is limited.

SPORTS
Take a break from sun-lounging and burn some calories as the perfect excuse for that extra cocktail or brownie at our afternoon coffee & cake serving. Join us for beach volleyball, yoga, water polo or table tennis throughout the week.

Our sand floor volleyball court is available for guests. Pick up a volleyball at the Beach Clubhouse and play with the family or invite some other guests to join you. To play beach volleyball, the idea is simple. Send the ball over the net and get it to hit the ground on your opponent’s side.

A game starts with a serve and the team is allowed three touches on their own side before sending it to the opponents. Don’t worry though if you don’t know how to spike or block, beach volleyball is quick to learn and a fun team game.

Whether you fancy a casual kick-around or something more competitive, pick up a football at our Beach Clubhouse. With soft sand that stretches for 2kms when the tide is out, you’ll have plenty of space for a game big or small.

WATER POLO & WATER SPORTS
Take a look at our weekly schedule and join us for fun water polo. First time players are most welcome. Two goals, one floating water polo ball and two teams passing the ball and trying to score in the opponent’s goal. Energetic fun in our pool. Kayaks, canoes, stand up paddle boards and snorkels are all available at our Beach Clubhouse.

PETANQUE, YOGA & MORE
Join us for petanque during the week (check our weekly calendar to see when) or borrow a set of boules from the Beach Clubhouse. Rules are simple, a small ball is thrown (called the cochonnet or ‘little pig’) and then players have to roll or throw hollow steel balls as close as they can to the ‘little pig’. Perfect for lazy afternoons with minimal energy expenditure.

Morning yoga is free to join and the perfect stretch and limbering needed before a day of snorkeling. Check the schedule for when it’s on, and join us for some downward dog, child pose and warrior pose with a workout view better than any gym.

A ping-pong (table tennis) table is set up near the volleyball court for something a little less energetic. Bats and balls are available at our Beach Clubhouse. First to 21 wins.

GOLFING
Tee off from some of the most breathtaking tees in the world. Whether you play the worst or the best game of your life, you won’t play one more memorable. The famous 15th hole is the signature shot, with a 50-metre drop from the tee on a ridge to the hole below and stunning views of Anse Georgette beach.

Recognised by the PGA and other federations, this 18-hole golf course on the north of Praslin is a real challenge for both professionals and amateur golfers – but an unforgettable pleasure for both. Talk to the team at Paradise Sun about green fees, club hire and arranging a round.

SEYCHELLOIS CREOLE
The Seychelles is a fascinating mix of people and language, cooking and architecture with a strong Seychellois Creole culture. Praslin and the Seychelles is best appreciated with some local exposure. Learn to dance to Sega music, experience life in a traditional Creole home and taste and make spicy Creole dishes.

Made by Creole staff at Paradise Sun to celebrate a Creole anniversary, this traditional style house in our gardens is made of palm leaves and island materials with local techniques.

See how Seychellois Creole cooked in the past and still do today, try your hand at a palm leaf broom and learn how to grind flour in a coco de mer shell. Explore the Creole house whenever you like or get Jimmy from our Entertainment team to show you around and tell you the stories.

Our weekly Creole night invites guests to experience the uniquely Seychelles sound and dance of Moutya and Sega every Friday. Seychelles music was born from island, African and European influences and evolved into vibrant drum driven body-moving melodies.

Hand drums and rattles create a changing tempo for flower dressed dancers around a crackling fire on the beach. Sit back and watch or join in if you can’t resist the rhythm.

Our daily changing buffet dinner always includes Creole flavours with plenty of tamarind and coriander complementing the menu. Our Creole night celebrates the best of it with Seychelles style curry, palm hearts, coconut dishes, dhal as well as saffron rice, breadfruit and tropical fruits all with lots of ginger, lemongrass and spices.

Try local fish wrapped in banana leaves like fresh job fish, red snapper or parrot fish steamed, grilled, baked, salted or smoked. For the adventurous a local specialty, is rousettes fruit bat, served in a curry (when available).

Discover a little more about local flavours and what makes Seychellois cuisine so special. Learn about our freshly picked ingredients, different fish types, the fruitful fruits of the islands and best of all, get to taste it.

CANOES & KAYAKS
A choice of canoes and kayaks can be used by one or two people to explore around the bay, spot rays, or even paddle out to the nearest island. Small lapping waves make this easy for beginners. Want to experience below the surface from above? Our see-through kayak gives you the best of both worlds.

SUP
What’s SUP? Stand Up Paddle Boarding is a cross between surfing and canoeing. The paddle board is designed for standing or kneeling and using an oar to navigate your way around the bay. First time SUP’ers will appreciate the lack of giant waves and warm water for the inevitable beginner’s water immersion.

DIVING
First time or experienced divers are staying in the right place at our Praslin hotel. Our on-site dive partners, White Tip Divers, are not only the top rated dive centre on Praslin and one of the best in the Seychelles, they are fully qualified and equipped for scuba diving group trips, private scuba dives, PADI certification and scuba introduction courses as well as guided snorkeling trips to the best dive spots in and around the Seychelles inner islands.

Diving in the Seychelles is truly special, with sharks, turtles, rays and clownfish, sponges and corals, humphead parrot fish, angel fish and butterfly fish as well as octopus and more than 880 other species to be discovered at a variety of dive sites where the underwater landscape is a mix of granite formations and coral gardens.

Dive sites are always assessed before diving, and with plenty of alternative spots nearby, a change in site is easy when needed

BOOBY ROCK

SISTER BANK

SNORKELING
With visibility nearing 30-metres, amazing fish variety, friendly turtles, curious rays and a water temperature averaging 29-degrees, snorkeling in the Seychelles is the perfect destination to discover the world just below the surface.

Cote d’Or – In front of the hotel and great for getting your sea-legs and a feel for the underwater. Shallow, warm waters with small waves are the perfect introduction to snorkel beginners. Once you are ready, take a day trip to one of our favourite snorkeling spots.

St Pierre – One of the most photographed islands in the Seychelles. The combination of small size with dramatic granite shapes and palm trees make this prettier than a picture. Because you can’t land here it’s good to bring a dry bag if your visit is part of a day trip to elsewhere. You’ll find lots of colourful variety and it’s just a mile off our beach.

Anse Lazio – Perhaps the world’s most beautiful stretch of sand. White sand, azure blues, and sea smoothed granite boulders make beach time extra pleasant. Don’t expect as much variety as some of the other smaller island Seychelles snorkeling spots, but a combination of beach and snorkeling is a day well spent at Anse Lazio.

Felicite – Around 4km off the coast of La Digue this is great for a half day visit. Eagle rays and hawksbill turtles are not uncommon. Humphead parrot fish and pretty butterflyfish are also amongst the many varieties here.

Coco – A great spot for turtle spotting near La Digue. One of the best snorkel and dive spots on the Seychelles inner islands archipelago with coral life and a small beach in between the granite edges.

FISHING
From light tackle to big game fishing, from half day family trips to full day private charter excursions, Praslin and the Seychelles is a dream fishing destination. The team at Paradise Sun can help you choose a Praslin fishing charter company and take care of any catch for ocean-fresh dinner that night.

There are a number of great fishing charter companies offering a variety of different fishing opportunities in the Seychelles. Most companies offer either a half day or full day trip.

These typically stay closer to the islands in depths of around 50m. The waters here are full of everything from sailfish to dorado and plenty of tuna. Half day excursions can be great for groups or families with pretty island vistas and fishing opportunities for the less-experienced.

Giving avid-fishermen the chance to head out to deeper waters and the chance for big game high-speed fishing and once-in-a-lifetime catches including marlin, a full day charter is a must. Full day charters are also great for groups with the option to include island visits and snorkeling stops in your itinerary.

Bring us your catch and the kitchen team will prepare it as you like for you to enjoy the day of your fishing-excursion. Our chefs team is well experienced in preparing all varieties of fish caught in Seychelles waters from parrot to dorado and snapper to marlin and from job to yellow fin tuna.

The kitchen charges SCR150 per person (charge applicable for lunch only) to prepare and cook your fish and can be served for you and your family or group.
