The farm’s various eateries all celebrate and incorporate the garden’s seasonal bounty. Fresh fruit, vegetables, herbs, eggs and other edible delicacies are harvested daily and transformed into dishes that are both nostalgic and innovative.

Babel Restaurant, situated in a refurbished old cowshed with Cape Dutch gables and modern glass walls, sets the perfect backdrop to savour these extraordinary dishes. The more relaxed Greenhouse eatery, again, offers an informal experience where light meals can be enjoyed after a stroll through the garden.

Grazing platters are also served in the farm’s state-of-the-art winery and Tasting Room, which sits suspended atop a vineyard in a glass-walled structure. Here you can taste the full range of award-winning wines, consisting of four whites, a rosé, three elegant reds and the beloved Sprankel Cap Classique.

WINE
From the unique terroir of the Simonsberg Mountain, the wines produced at Babylonstoren tell the tale of this Boland region in a most enjoyable way. The wine cellar is a library of winemaking processes used the world over, from amphorae clay pots to open cement fermenters and concrete egg-shaped vessels.

Winemaker Klaas Stoffberg and cellar master Charl Coetzee have great fun producing wines with the unique equipment, but these are only used for small batches to create exclusive and limited-edition wines for the Babylonstoren Wine Club.

The farm’s standard range of wines is created using state-of-the-art methods including modern stainless steel tanks as well as oak barrels to produce award-winning wines. The range comprises four whites, four reds, a Provençal-style rosé and a darling Cap Classique called Sprankel.

GARDEN
For visitors, the garden offers the space to soak in the natural Cape Floral Kingdom surroundings. Orchards of abundant fruit, acres of vegetables, farm animals and a macrocosm of pollinating insects make up the botanical haven, alongside unique exhibitions and collections.

Among others, these include thousands of vibrant clivias cultivated by and donated to Babylonstoren from renowned collectors; a succulent house with arid-adapted plants representing the unique vegetation of South Africa’s arid regions; and an expansive cycad collection – one of the rarest plant exhibitions in the world accessible to the public.

The Spice House and Healing Garden at the rear end of the formal garden harbour a variety of tropical plants and herbal healing flora, respectively. These tell the story of the wide selection of herbs and spices represented in South African cuisine.

EXPERIENCE
Visitors can get a glimpse of farm operations through various experiences, such as olive oil blending or witnessing the essential oil distillery in the Scented Room opposite the cellar. Here, an olfactory experience awaits in a space dedicated to transforming the farm’s most fragrant harvests into a range of natural bath and body products.

Other in-depth experiences, hosted by master gardeners, chefs and specialists on a variety of topics, are offered at weekly workshops. The Farm Shop, Milk Room, Bakery, Butchery and Lekker Kamer all offer tasty treats sourced and cultivated from the estate and surrounding suppliers.

The objective is to offer visitors a comprehensive taste of the region, and an opportunity to stock up on an array of pantry treats, fresh produce and luxury homeware. An expansive online offering is also available for remote shoppers across South Africa.

FARMHOUSE
Set beneath a copse of trees, the Farmhouse combines authentic architecture with modern design: refined and moody. A green communal library known as the Butterfly Room contains a rare collection of butterflies bequeathed to the farm. The loft above it has become one of the most beautiful honeymoon suites in Africa.

FARMHOUSE SUITE
A botanical theme combines with moody interiors, incorporating swarthy four-poster king-size beds, dusted moss walls, luxurious en-suite marble bathrooms and generous walk-in cupboards. Each room is fitted with a cast-iron stove, contemporary accessories and furniture such as an extra-length MDF Italia sofa.

GARDEN COTTAGES
At Babylonstoren, the overall effect is relaxed yet well heeled with some of the existing farm buildings transformed into sophisticated guest accommodation. Set adjacent to a 3,5 hectare cultivated fruit and vegetable garden, the cottages are characterised by thick whitewashed walls, elegant gables and hearty fireplaces that emulate an authentic farm stay experience.

The interiors take on an altogether contemporary feel when paired with the modern lines of furniture by international design brands such as Kartell, Magis, Philippe Starck and the Bourellec Bros. There are six one-bedroom suites, as well as three one-bedroom cottages and four two-bedroomed cottages.

FYNBOS COTTAGES
At Fynbos Cottages guests can fully immerge themselves in the beauty of the natural plant habitat of the Western Cape’s mountains. The cottages are newly built in the Cape Dutch style and adjoin vineyards and orchards – ideal for our more adventurous guests.

Nestled at the foot of the Simonsberg and Franschhoek mountains, the Fynbos Family House is an elegant, exclusive-use home in Cape Dutch-style in the heart of the Cape Winelands.

MANOR HOUSE
Our Cape Dutch Manor House dates back to 1777. This exclusive house has five bedrooms accommodating ten guests. The interior has been beautifully restored to its former glory, but with a definite contemporary touch. Bookshelves are filled with a wonderful selection of books and the traditional farm kitchen boasts a roaring old wood-burning stove.

BABEL RESTAURANT
Housed in the old cow shed, Babel Restaurant is a wonderful mix of Cape Dutch architecture and contemporary glass walls that makes for a simple yet edgy environment in which to try our tasty yet often unconventional combinations. We have a farm-to-fork philosophy which means we like to serve food that is seasonal and that reflects our “pick, clean and serve” approach.

GREENHOUSE RESTAURANT
At the rear of the garden, tucked away between the oak trees, the Greenhouse offers a wonderful refreshment station to guests after a walk through the garden.

All our food is served picnic-style, highlighting fresh and seasonal ingredients inspired by the garden. Our freshly baked scones with seasonal preserves are a favourite, best enjoyed with a spot of farm-grown honeybush tea.

BAKERY
By day, the Bakery supplies our Farm Shop and restaurants with freshly baked breads but by night, this space is transformed into a true celebration of La Dolce Vita! For dinners in the Bakery, we serve our food family style – guests dish up for themselves from wooden boards placed on their table while sipping on wine and enjoying the lively atmosphere.

THE SPA
Like everything else at Babylonstoren, the Garden Spa is inextricably linked to the garden and the ever-changing seasons. We like to think of it as a living spa, set within a forest of bamboo with tranquil greenery and a myriad leiwater channels to set the tone. Housed in our pavilion constructed of bamboo, it comprises a hammam, chill room, hot spa and gym.

VISIT THE GARDEN
Set within 3,5 hectares (8 acres) of cultivated fruit and vegetables, the big garden at Babylonstoren is at the heart of the farm. It was inspired by the historic Company’s Garden in Cape Town, which supplied sailing ships of the Dutch East India Company with fresh vegetables and fruit during the days when the Cape was a halfway station between Europe and Asia.

But we also link back to the mythological hanging gardens of Babylon. Those were thought to have been created by Nebuchadnezzar in the sixth century BC, for his wife who longed for the mountains and valleys of her youth.

WINE TASTING & CELLAR
Our wines are produced in a state-of-the-art winery and are made to showcase the soils and climate where their grapes are grown. The Tasting Room sits adjacent to the Wine Cellar, offering views of the conical Babylonstoren hill, Simonsberg and the Banghoek Mountains.

CELLAR
We have about 94 hectares (232 acres) under vine and produce 13 different grape varieties, with our highest vines – pinot noir and chardonnay – lying against Simonsberg at some 600 metres above sea level. Led by cellar master Charl Coetzee and winemaker Klaas Stoffberg, the farm’s 2011 harvest led to the first bottling of wine under the Babylonstoren label.

Journey to our underground wine tunnel to savour Babylonstoren’s finest wines. Our cellar tour starts in the vineyards above ground, where vines from various styles are cultivated.

From there, we venture into the working cellar with its array of wine-producing vessels, from amphorae clay pots to open cement fermenters and concrete eggs. The tour concludes with a master tasting of our finest wines, paired with farm-grown and handmade delicacies.

THE STORY OF WINE
A tale as old as time, told in vivid sensory detail in our new wine museum, The Story of Wine. The space is a celebration of man’s ingenuity and the earth’s generosity, and the cultural events that have shaped our collective winemaking and wine drinking heritage.

It details the origins, cultivation and culture behind mankind’s love affair with wine, while encouraging a contemporary narrative of its age-old traditions and social gravitas. Visit the museum at the entrance to our Tasting Room, to your right. FRANSCHHOEK WINE TRAM
Tram goers can hop off at Babylonstoren for a wine tasting or daily cellar tour as part of their Franschhoek Wine Tram experience. We form part of the purple and orange line, which covers 8 wine estates in the picturesque Franschhoek winelands valley.

OLIVE OIL
The ultimate pantry go-to, our Extra Virgin Olive Oil Blend & seasonal single varietal offerings begin and conclude their journey right here on our farm before making their way into your kitchen.

Made from several olive varietals that are grown in the sun and soil on the slopes of the Simonsberg, the entire process takes place under the expert care of our ‘olive oil sommelier’, Klaas Stoffberg and his team: from traditional hand-harvesting to cold-pressing to decanting into our uniquely designed tins.

Our philosophy in the creation of our olive oils – one that unites sophisticated international methods with a passionate artisanal approach – has led to local and international recognition in the form of several prestigious awards as well as our most important benchmark, the approval of foodies who have come to appreciate the freshness and unique flavour of our liquid gold.

OLIVE OIL & BALSAMIC VINEGAR TOUR
The walking tour starts with a visit to our balsamic vinegar cellar, where guests will gain insight into the traditional methods and production processes used to create our DOP-style vinegar, and taste both our three-year-old and twelve-year-old balsamic vinegars.

This is followed by a behind-the-scenes look at how Babylonstoren’s table olives are made in our olive production plant and sample the varieties on offer.

After the tasting, the process of transforming olives into golden olive oil in our cold press process is explained in the olive press. Finally, it’s time to taste our olive oils. Guests can create their own 100ml blend of the different oils to take home as a small keepsake.

EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL BLEND
Our popular Extra Virgin Olive Oil Blend is made from five olive varietals grown on our farm and has a gentle aroma with notes of florals and fresh herbs, most markedly mint. A nutty start on the palate runs into a pleasantly bitter and peppery taste for which true cold-extracted, fresh-from-harvest extra virgin olive oil is so celebrated.

MANDELA TOUR AT DRAKENSTEIN CORRECTIONAL CENTRE
The Drakenstein Correctional Centre, formerly known as Victor Verster Prison, is an unofficial attraction linked to the life and times of Nelson Mandela.

Situated between Paarl and Franschhoek in the Cape Winelands, it was here, on a house on the property, that Nelson Mandela spent the last 14 months of his 27 years in prison.

A lowsecurity farm prison, it was previously used for lower-risk political prisoners on their way to being released. Mandela was transferred there from Cape Town’s Pollsmoor Prison in December 1988.

PEARL VALLEY GOLF COURSE
As the name implies, the Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course truly bears the stamp of the world’s preeminent golf course designer. Golf Digest has named the course as “Best Conditioned” in the Western Cape from 2010 to 2019.

Since 2006 the course has consistently been placed among the top 10 in South Africa and was ranked as the fifth best in the country in 2018/2019 by Golf Digest magazine. For six consecutive years Compleat Golfer bestowed the Five Star Experience Award on the course.

RHEBOKSKLOOF – QUAD BIKING & HORSE RIDING
Wine Valley Horse Trails has introduced Wine Valley Quad Bike Trails! Based on the beautiful Rhebokskloof Wine Estate in Paarl, South Africa, the quad bikes complement the horse trails by allowing guests to enjoy the same views and nature experience that the horse riders do.

Like the horse trails, the quad bikes are led by an experienced guide. There are half-hour to two-hour trails. There is also a fun obstacle course through the forest, which gives novice riders the opportunity to practice their new skills

Segway Tours and Spier wine farm have combined green technology, sustainability and fun to provide South Africa’s Stellenbosch winelands experience of a lifetime – for the whole family! Segway Tours offers one of the best things to do in Cape Town and Stellenbosch.

LA FERME – TROUT FISHING
The Wemmers River runs through La Ferme. There are natural brown and rainbow trout in the river. There are four dams stocked with trout, smallmouth and largemouth bass, carp, some witvis and tilapia. You don’t have to book to fish, just come along.

THE CHEF’S TABLE
Kindly note that due to Covid restrictions the Chef’s Table experience is unavailable until further notice. At the Chef’s Table in the Great Hall guests will enjoy a completely interactive evening with one of our celebrated chefs. An evening perfectly curated to your preferences and interests.

The experience begins with a leisurely stroll through the La Residence gardens. During the summer months, the abundance of black figs, ripe pomegranates, juicy plums, green artichokes and fragrant herbs will leave you spoiled for choice as you select the freshest seasonal ingredients for your feast.

The four-course meal complete with amuse bouche, palate cleanser and petits fours will be prepared in front of you while the chef talks you through the ingredients, cooking techniques and flavours. All that remains is for you to enjoy your meal accompanied by a perfectly paired selection of wines by our wine steward.

DINING FOR NON-RESIDENTS
La Residence is open to the public for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner subject to availability and by prior reservation. Breakfast can only be booked through the hotel for non-residents.

For the more adventurous, La Residence is now offering an exclusive number of Country Picnic Baskets to be enjoyed each Saturday and Sunday afternoon on the lawns surrounding our tranquil pond with views overlooking the Franschhoek mountains and 30 acre estate.

Included in the picnic basket is a delicious selection of seasonal produce, freshly baked goods and locally sourced charcuterie, spreads and preserves.

THE SPA ROOM 
The Spa Treatment Room at La Residence in Franschhoek allows guests to indulge in an array of pampering treatments. La Residence has two in-house spa therapists who provide treatments in either in the tranquil, air-conditioned double treatment room or in the privacy of your own suite or balcony.

Signature treatments include the Swedish Massage to relax muscles and stimulate circulation as well as the tension releasing Deep Tissue Massage to ease stiffness.

The Vineyard Venue
The Vineyard Venue is an intimate private event space at La Residence that can accommodate up to 40 guests. This magnificent and opulently decorated winelands venue includes art by Pierre Carl Vermeulen and Ayanda Mabula and overlooks blossoming plum and peach trees as well as the Wemmershoek mountains from the wrap-around verandah.

FRANSCHHOEK
Franschhoek is known as South Africa’s Culinary Capital with over 60 restaurants in the charming town that has a distinctly French heritage. Franschhoek (‘French Corner’ in Dutch) is a picturesque village where the laid back café culture has a distinctly French charm.

The first French Huguenot settlers arrived in South Africa at Franschhoek in 1688 and their influence lives on, for this is a destination undeniably devoted to the creation and enjoyment of good food and wine.

Many of the original French Huguenot refugees were given land by the Dutch government in a valley called Olifantshoek (“Elephants’ corner”), so named because of the elephants that crossed into the valley to calve.

The name of the area soon changed to le Coin Français (“the French Corner”), and later to Franschhoek, with many of the settlers naming their new farms after the areas in France from which they came. La Motte, Champagne, La Cotte, Haute Cabrière, La Provence, Bourgogne, La Terra de Luc and La Dauphine were among some of the first established farms — most of which retain their original Cape Dutch farmhouses today.

Full of character, Franschhoek is distinguished by its fine colonial architecture, numerous gourmet restaurants, art galleries and curio shops. Despite its diminutive size, Franschhoek boasts an incredible range of snug cafés and stylish restaurants with every style of food on offer.

From traditional English pub food to classic French bistro fare and from superb wood-fired pizzas to contemporary Indian cuisine – there is something for every palate.

THE HUGUENOT MONUMENT
The French heritage is commemorated by the Huguenot Monument which stands at the end of the town. The museum nearby chronicles the history of the first settlers, with each of the original Huguenot farms having its own fascinating story to tell.

The Cape Dutch architecture in much of the village is unspoilt, as restrictions have been placed on the extent of renovations and new construction in order to preserve the spirit of the original settlers to the area.

In 1904 a 27 km train line was built between Paarl and Franschhoek to serve as an alternative to ox drawn carts for farmers wanting to get their produce to market.

Steam locomotives operated along the route until diesel locomotives took over in the 1970s and then, in the 1990s, as the need for rail transport decreased, service along the railway line was discontinued.

The branch line was reinstated in 2012 by a private operator which now operates as the Franschhoek Wine Tram.

A VIBRANT CULTURE
Within the vicinity of the village there are more than 40 wine estates, many of which offer classical concerts, art exhibitions and jazz evenings alongside cellar tours, tutored wine tastings and award-winning dining experiences.

Wine-making has an illustrious 300-year old history in the Franschhoek Valley. The oldest family-owned wine farms are worth visiting for their architecture and beautiful vineyards alone.

Whether you are a connoisseur with your own cellar or an enthusiastic newcomer to the wonderful world of wine, wine tasting in Franschhoek offers a unique and diverse experience for oenophiles.

You’ll learn about the wine-making process and gain an understanding of what makes South African wine so special as well as the differences between new world and old world wines.

STELLENBOSCH AND PAARL
Stellenbosch and Paarl are a short distance from Franschhoek and are well worth exploring for a complete Wine Country experience. Different terroirs lend themselves to different wine styles and varietals while Stellenbosch also has several top-rated restaurants.

Some of our favourite Stellenbosch and Paarl Wine Estates and Restaurants include Tokara, Thelema, Delaire Graff, Babylonstoren, Glen Carlou, Cavalli, Overture, Rust en Vrede, Terroir and Jordan.

WHEN TO VISIT
Franschhoek has something to offer all year round. Peak season is during the summer months from November until April when temperatures soar above 30 degrees celsius.

During the winter months, temperatures drop to an average of about 18 degrees while visitors enjoy crackling fireplaces, red wine and the many festivals hosted in the valley.

ART AT LA RESIDENCE

This appreciation is shown in the beautiful collection of art and interior ornaments across The Royal Portfolio properties. Art is deeply ingrained into each property’s character, reflecting Liz and Phil Biden’s keen and adventurous eye for the beautiful.

Drawing inspiration from her travels around the world, Liz has acquired a unique and varied collection of art and interior artefacts. Local artists are often commissioned, giving up-and-coming African artists exposure to the international guests staying at each property.

La Residence is set on a 30-acre estate in the heart of the Franschhoek Valley among orchards and vineyards and against a backdrop of magnificent mountains.

Tango and Twist, the miniature horses, are just two of the characters that you might bump into at La Residence. Keep an eye out too for the springboks, guinea fowl and strutting peacocks.

La Residence is set among Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz vineyards from which we produce our own wines – the two single varietals and a refreshing rose.

One of our chefs will gladly show you around our herb garden and the plum orchards where many of our daily ingredients are grown.

WINE TASTING 
Not only do we produce our wines from the La Residence estate, but we have an extensive wine list showcasing South Africa’s most distinguished wines.

Resident guests can taste the iconic wines of the Cape in the comfort of La Residence. Either be guided by our suggestions or compile your own tasting ‘menu’ from our comprehensive wine list.

And what better way to conclude a tasting than with a stroll through our own vineyards where we grow Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz grapes on our 30-acre farm. On 2 January 2011 our maiden 2010 vintage was bottled.

We grow two varietals at La Residence – Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. And we produce three wines – the Owner’s Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, our red blend called the Nicole Alexandra (80% Cab and 20% Shiraz) – named after Liz and Phil’s two daughters and our Rosemary Jane Rose which is named after Matt’s wife Rosie (made from our Shiraz grapes). Our winemaker is DP Burger from nearby Glenwood.

Our first vintage was 2010 so guests can enjoy a wonderful vertical tasting in our wine cellar. Our expert sommelier, Ricardo Roux, will tailor wine tastings to our guests’ interests and palates and loves to showcase regional expressions of South Africa’s finest wines.

We have a house wine list which is included in the rate for guests as well as a reserve wine list. Our wine list recently won the Diner’s Club Diamond Award.

There are many wine estates in and around Franschhoek with fabulous tasting rooms and restaurants – we offer 8 Ways of Wine Tasting at La Residence, including our fabulous helicopter wine tours where guests can sample and compare wines from two different regions (cool and warm climate) on the same trip – not to mention the incredible scenery along the way.

Take a leisurely pedal through the lazy Franschhoek streets. Some of the most acclaimed wineries in South Africa are situated within a 2km radius of La Residence and are easily accessible by bicycle. We will provide all of the necessary equipment.

WINE TASTING ON HORSEBACK
Take a scenic ride through vineyards, forests and over mountains on purebred Arabian horses with expert guide Pieter Hugo – a South African Team Endurance Rider.

This experience is ideal for advanced and novice riders alike. The total riding time is around 2 hours 30 minutes, with 30-45 minute stops at the Rickety Bridge Winery and Mont Rochelle Wine Estate.

WINE TASTING ON A HARLEY
