Hotel Die Sonne Frankenberg is situated in the marketplace right next door to the town hall with its ten towers in this idyllic town full of half-timbered buildings. The Sonne has been a place of hospitality since 1833. Back then, it was very much more geared towards food and drink though.

Since May 2007, you can stay overnight in style in the medieval old town in the most beautiful square in town in these cosy houses with their sunny rooms following a comprehensive renovation of these historic buildings.

Surrounding them, you will find picturesque half-timbered facades and the market square with its famous town hall featuring 10 towers and figures carved by Philipp Soldan, who is the namesake of our gourmet restaurant.

The Schirn, which makes up the ground floor of the town hall, has been hosting the weekly market for centuries. Three buildings, which were built in the 16th Century, were modernised in the 21st.

“Altes Brauhaus” (old brewery house)
Beer was brewed here until 1892. The ground floor forms part of the banquet hall today, and hotel rooms can be found on the 2nd to 4th floors.

Bürgerhaus (civic auditorium)
Today, the ground floor houses Bistro Philippo, with a cocktail bar and fireplace lounge, and floors 1 to 3 house guest rooms.

“Stadtweinhaus” (town wine house)
As from 1294, only the town wine keeper was allowed to serve wine in Frankenberg. Today, the Philipp Soldan is situated in the basement, and the SonneStuben on the ground floor. Floors 1 to 4 house hotel rooms.

Rooms and suites
Step inside – and take in our beautiful rooms. The light is warm and friendly, the walls radiate in bright, sunny tones, and the bathrooms are beautiful – everything is welcoming you at Die Sonne.

You get to live in a cosy half-timbered room, or in one of our modern rooms with a Mediterranean atmosphere – the choice is yours. All our rooms share the comforts of modern technology.

Feel right at home with us and enjoy the various inclusive services which are available to you free of charge during your stay.

Soldan Suite
Our largest suite: Fully equipped kitchen, large dining table, also suitable for meetings, sitting room area with sofa bed, separate bedroom, bathroom with whirlpool tub and shower, and a guest toilet.

Spa Suite
For special moments: Four-poster bed, romantic half-timbered bay window and fireplace in a separate living room. Optional: ceremonial bath with music, candles and essential oils in the oriental bath

Culinary
The enjoyment at Die Sonne
Our culinary diversity is presented in three restaurants: In the Philipp Soldan gourmet restaurant, which was awarded a star in the Michelin Guide and 16 points in the Gault Millau.

And in the SonneStuben, with its sophisticated regional cuisine (awarded a BiB Gourmand) and Bistro Philippo, which serves Mediterranean delicacies and has a cocktail bar with a fireplace lounge.

Philipp Soldan
Gourmet cuisine with ease and transparency
Our gourmet restaurant has been awarded a Michelin star and 16 points in the Gault Millau, yet it is still open to everyone and is anything but stiff.

Ease, openness and transparency: This is the mark of the rooms in our gourmet restaurant. It is also the character of the nature-loving gourmet kitchen run by our head chef Erik Arnecke.

His preference for original quality products which clearly come from the area comes on top of this. He combines modern elements with traditional ones.

Glass walls create transparency, cooking and enjoyment merge into one. This is also a characteristic of the Philipp Soldan Chef’s Table, which is regularly used for cooking classes and events.

Wine menu with exquisite tipples

Openness also forms a basic principle of our two climatised, walk-in wine cellars, which are integrated into the Philipp Soldan: They are open to our guests for selecting their wine and enjoying individual tastings. A trademark of the Philipp Soldan is the wine list with its exquisite wines that our sommelier personally selects from various winegrowers.

SonneStuben
Let the cordial service staff recommend a regionally inspired speciality to you. The fresh ingredients come from the Eder Uplands – and you can certainly taste it. Timo Schröder, head chef at the SonneStuben, favours sophisticated regional cuisine with products from the Eder Uplands.

You can sense the real pleasure we take in offering hospitality in the SonneStuben, Jagdstube, and Trachtenstube. Our cordial service is just as convincing as the skills of our kitchen team.

SonneStuben, terrace
Treat yourself to some cool drinks on our SonneStuben terrace on a balmy summer night, or, in bright sunny weather, sample one of our home-made pastries, or one of our ice-cream specialties we make ourselves.

Bistro, bar, lounge
Come together, relax and enjoy – there is nothing better than spending some free time with good friends. Bistro Philippo is the just the right place for that.

You can kick off a wonderful evening at the Philippo, end an eventful day at Die Sonne here, or just treat yourself to a tiny break in between. Life can be so beautiful!

Coffee and cake
You can enjoy our homemade cakes and pastries and a wide selection of coffees and teas on every day from 2:30 pm.

SonnenLand
Small delicacies and homemade products such as our popular dukkah, jams and much more can be found in our reception area.

The charming French 2CV with classic car status
The Citroen 2CV, or Duckling as it is affectionately called, was produced from 1948 to 1990. It gained cult status, especially in the 60s and 70s, when it became the symbol of a whole generation.

It was initially designed for a completely different set of people, as a cheap means of transport for French farmers. One of the conditions that the car had to fulfil was to have a sufficiently soft suspension to transport a basket of eggs over a bumpy country road without damaging them.

Its unique driving experience gave rise to nicknames like the “Rocking Chair on Wheels”. Enjoy the nostalgic charm and cabrio feeling in one of our two fun classic cars!

Trips
On the road again
We would be more than happy to work out an individual route for you and your classic car-loving friends. Simply contact us if you are interested. Our Events Department will be glad to provide you with personal recommendations for your trip, including watering holes along the way and a supporting programme.

The area around Frankenberg
Nature, sports and culture
There is a lot to discover in the area around Frankenberg. Depending on what you are looking for – the untouched nature of the Eder Uplands, the sporting activities that extend in all directions, even into Sauerland, or the cultural treasures in the towns in our region

Kellerwald-Edersee National Park
Nature’s gift close to Frankenberg. “Between heaven and the Eder” is the slogan that invites tourists to undertake a variety of activities.

The range of activities on offer could not be larger. Quaint forests, gentle mountain peaks, gorges and rock faces, colourful meadows and babbling brooks – this is how Kellerwald-Edersee National Park presents itself on 57,000 square kilometres.

It is one of the largest contiguous beech forests in Europe (declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO) and a refuge for many rare and endangered species of animals and plants. The black stork, eagle owl, six species of woodpeckers, and 15 species of bats are just as much at home here as the red deer and the shy wildcat.

In an impressive exhibition featuring multimedia installations, the new National Park Centre in Vöhl-Herzhausen is dedicated to the exciting subject of the wilderness, thus conveying extraordinary insights which would otherwise remain hidden from man. The hikes are very popular and led by a ranger, who not only knows guides, but also has a lot to tell.

The area around the Edersee
The Edersee is an Eldorado for leisure and holiday activities in the midst of the charming low mountain landscape of Kellerwald-Edersee Nature and National Park.

Five of the Eder tributary valleys are designated nature reserves, and over long stretches you can hardly see any evidence of human influence. 27 kilometres in length, the Edersee is a paradise for water sports: sailing, surfing, water skiing, canoeing, fishing, swimming, diving, boat and steamboat rides are just some of the many activities that can be found here. The Edersee is only 29 km away from DIE SONNE

Sports facilities at DIE SONNE
Active and vital
If you like sports, you will love DIE SONNE. We have almost endless possibilities available: Extensive tours with a mountain, trekking, or racing bike, diving to explore a sunken village, galloping on horseback through meadows full of wild flowers, “discovering” the area on a Segway, getting back into shape with a personal fitness coach, exploring kitted out with GPS equipment and a picnic backpack…

The Eder Uplands and the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park and its lush nature transform sport into a unique landscape experience. Ask us and we will show you the most beautiful spots.

Hiking
Hiking between the sky and the Eder … extensive and silent forest elevations and idyllic flood plains invite you to take part in various hikes. Far away from crowds of tourists and the hustle and bustle of everyday life, you get to discover the Eder Uplands on beautiful top-quality hiking trails.

Golfing
Die Sonne is situated right in the middle of a small paradise for golfers: Marburg/Cölbe, Waldeck and Winterberg golf courses offer numerous gradients and natural water courses.

Perfect conditions for a varied and exciting game – including a fantastic view. With their different skill levels, the courses offer you perfect conditions for improving your style.

Biking
A wide range of cycle paths take cyclists to the picturesque valleys of the Eder, Lahn, Ohm…

Skiing, alpine skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing and tobogganing
Enjoy the snowy fairy-tale landscape of Northern Hessen while skiing or tobogganing, or on a cross-country ski run or while walking the winter hiking trails

Water sports
Let the wind blow in your face on the Edersee. Excellent sailing awaits you on a lake where the World Championship for the Masters has already been held. The panorama of the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park offers a great view.

Freely accessible bays invite you to go for a swim and have a picnic. An experienced skipper accompanies you on the trip. You can also go sailing without a skipper if you have a sailing license.

In inclement weather, the more ambitious sailor can look forward to a sporting trip. And if tranquillity is more your style, you will certainly get your money’s worth when you go sailing on an elegant electric yacht.

Sailing, boating and boating trips
The Edersee offers a variety of water sports activities over a length of 27 km with excellent water quality. The wind and weather conditions make it an ideal spot to learn any type of water sports, including surfing, sailing, and water skiing. The Edersee also offers sporting challenges for the ambitious water sports enthusiast throughout the year.

Fishing
Excellent fishing opportunities are available for the sporting angler on the Edersee and Affoldern lake.

Canoeing
The Eder – our home river – is referred to as the “jewel of Hessen’s rivers”. It is the fastest, cleanest, and the most natural river of its size in the Hessen region and takes 1 to 3 days to travel. Experience unspoilt nature from a new perspective.

Surfing, wind surfing, water skiing and stand-up paddling
Learn the high art of surfing, windsurfing, and water skiing in one of Germany’s most beautiful recreational areas.

Diving
The Edersee, with its dam and Waldeck Castle towering over it, has been a well-known symbol of the Waldeck and Eder Uplands holiday region since long.

The underwater world of the Edersee is an experience of a very special kind, especially for divers. The water level and visibility in the Edersee are usually very well suited to diving in the summer months.

Pure art and culture
Visit sights in and around Frankenberg, such as the “Liebfrauenkirche” (Church of Our Lady) or picturesque parks, castles, and medieval fortresses. The museums and art collections are also home to extraordinary treasures. Thonet Museum exhibits design classics and furniture rarities.

Theatre, music and art represent opulent sources of inspiration. Local theatre, the “Kultursommer” summer cultural festival in Northern Hessen, the “Literarische Frühling” literary spring fair and the world exhibition of contemporary art, and the Documenta in Kassel all allow for the flourishing cultural diversity in the region.
