Chewton Glen is a quintessentially English, privately owned luxury Country House Hotel & Spa on the fringe of the New Forest. With some of England’s most stunning countryside rolling up around us and the calmness of the sea just moments away, Chewton Glen is an idyllic escape.

  • Captain Frederick Marryat used his visits here to write the enduring children’s novel ‘The Children of the New Forest’.
  • With over 130 acres of woodland, gardens and parkland the Chewton Glen estate now extends to the edge of the New Forest National Park and down to the Solent coastline.
  • In 1990 The Spa was opened, the first of its kind in the UK. The spa currently boasts 12 treatment rooms, a 17 metre swimming pool, fitness suite, dance studio, sauna and steam rooms, Nail Studio, hydrotherapy pool and hot tub.

THE HISTORY
Nestled on the fringe of the New Forest, Chewton Glen is an idyllic retreat with a sparkling history. Historic documents suggest the luxury Country House Hotel & Spa was built in the early eighteenth century, with land and premises known as “Chewton Glen House” appearing in 1732.

Its famous literary link threads through the decades and centuries. Capt. Frederick Marryat stayed for periods of the 1840’s, gathering material for his famous novel “The Children of the New Forest”.

Clearly, the captain was inspired by the hotel’s exquisite location on the edge of the New Forest, set upon 130 acres of beautiful grounds. Accordingly, many of the hotel’s rooms are named after “The Children of the New Forest”, and of the captain’s other novels and characters.

Between 1947 and 1967, Chewton Glen had three different owners. But it was the Duval family who first made Chewton Glen a hotel. No doubt its family-owned influence has sealed it as the family-friendly retreat it is today.

The Skan family purchased it from the family in 1966 and transformed it into its current guise. The Skan family sold the hotel in 2007 to private owners who were previously long standing guests, with a long-standing love of the hotel.

Now, Chewton Glen continues to develop, winning countless national and international awards and accolades. From being an author’s inspiring forest retreat to the “Best Country Hotel in the World”, it has a captivating past, and an exciting future.

MARRYAT SUITE
The Marryat is the largest suite at Chewton Glen and is in fact, the bedroom and lounge of the original 18th Century manor house. Gorgeous views of the lawns and parkland are afforded by the large private terrace, which is often used by discerning guests to host cocktail receptions and private dinner parties.

With a particularly large sitting room and cloakroom as well as a generously proportioned bedroom, the suite named after the pioneering naval author is very much the last word in gracious country living.

COACH HOUSE SUITE
Chewton Glen is the perfect place for a family to spend some quality time together and nowhere is this more evident than in our beautifully proportioned Coach House Suites. Howard style armchairs and sofas transform into beds and up to six people can be comfortably accommodated with plenty of bath and shower room facilities to go round.

Each coach house features a semi-private walled garden that’s perfect for a little fresh air or an al fresco cup of morning coffee. It’s a truly unique experience, as every coach house is a duplex featuring an upstairs and downstairs.

JACOB FAITHFUL SUITE
Where classic country house living meets five-star hotel opulence. The Jacob Faithful is tastefully decorated in a traditional English style and features stunning views of the lawn at Chewton Glen, from its own private balcony. The layout encompasses a generously proportioned bedroom, elegant sitting room and a large bathroom with both a bath and double walk-in shower.

THE YEWS
Consider it the most secluded abode to nestle in the tranquil New Forest; our private Treehouse is a place where you can gather those closest to you and immerse yourself in the trees together for the most extraordinary experience. Equipped with a wood burner in the heart of the living space, beautiful rich tones of green and grey echo the environment beyond the balconies.

We’ve carefully considered the interior design to create a real sense of luxury that still has an essence of earthy tranquillity to complement the idyllic surroundings. Up to four adults and eight children can indulge in all of the deluxe features that this Treehouse has to offer, with an abundance of ways to relax both inside and outside.

Gather inside for some old fashioned games in the warmth or if the sun is shining explore a world of untouched nature outdoors.

Let a personal chef take charge of your dining preferences with a serviced kitchen, however, if you would like to keep it as private as possible stick to our celebrated Treehouse Hampers, where a simple hatch will allow your delicious deliveries to be made in the most discreet way possible. Delight in the potential to make this experience as bespoke as you like, with unparalleled privacy and ultimate indulgence.

THE DINING ROOM
From the typically English to the totally cosmopolitan, Head Chef Simon Addison, Executive Head Chef Luke Matthews and their talented brigade create fine dining at its finest. We’re not great at blowing our own trumpet, so we’ll let the judges at The Tatler Restaurant Awards do it for us.

“The menu is utterly delicious and thankfully avoids the sometimes tortured ‘cleverness of country-hotel dining.” And if you’re concerned about food miles, you won’t be disappointed to discover that many of the ingredients we use have travelled less than 100 yards from our own kitchen garden.

THE KITCHEN
The Kitchen is a relaxed, open-plan, informal dining experience offering you the ability to watch the masters at work. Our menu is heavily influenced by James Martin and produced by his brigade of talented chefs, changing with the seasons and utilising some of the region’s finest fresh fish and shellfish as well as homemade pizzas daily and not forgetting James’s famous pudding selection.

And where better to take it than in one of England’s very first country house hotels? Named after the celebrated naval officer, Captain Marryat, our afternoon tea uses the loveliest of local ingredients and features sandwiches, cakes, scones, jams and teas that more than do Hampshire proud (although we’re happy to admit that our smoked salmon comes from the slightly further afield crystal clear waters of Scotland).

During the cookery workshop participants will learn new skills under the guidance of the Chef Tutor and prepare a nutritious and tasty meal, half of which will then be vacuum-sealed and distributed to a local homeless charity in Bournemouth. It’s a fun, hands-on day for you and your team to bond with a truly purposeful outcome.

CONVERSATION & TEA PARTY
At Chewton Glen we offer a special event which combines the fun of baking with the enjoyment and fulfilment of helping to make a real difference to the lives of older people who have become isolated from family and friends.

Working in conjunction with Contact the elderly, the only national charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and social isolation amongst older people through face-to-face contact, your group will be challenged to create a tea party for a small group of local people aged 75 and over who live alone.

The day starts when the group meet their Chef Tutor at the Kitchen Cookery School. Participants will learn how to mix, bake, and slice & dice their way to create a fabulous treat in the great tradition of the hotel’s famed Captain Marryat afternoon tea.

Later that afternoon participants will host their older guests in a stylish private dining room with whom they will share the fruits of their labours and make a toast to friendship and fun with a celebratory glass of fizz.

Track the location of the other teams in order to stay ahead of the game and score points for correct answers – but be careful as you will lose points if your answers are wrong. Team scores will be displayed on a live leader board with the winner announced at the end of the allotted time.

The Knowledge session provides the designated individuals with the skills required to build the bike which they then share with the rest of their team before coming up with a plan. ‘Curveballs’ will be thrown at them along the way: insufficient budget, missing parts and other challenges to overcome. Teams may need to collaborate to ensure they get their bike is built on budget and on time!

We currently live and work within challenging, fast-paced, busy and uncertain times and practising mindfulness enables us to develop a new set of skills to stay steady in the midst of all this.
