A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The history of the Gardena began in 1923, when Antonio and Anna Demetz, the grandparents of the hotel’s present owner Hugo Bernardi, bought a private home and converted it into a hotel. Constant expansions and improvements made the Gardena one of the valley’s leading establishments.
In 1988, under the guidance of Annamaria Demetz Bernardi, the Gardena Hotel received a four-star rating. In 2000 her son Hugo, and his wife Cinzia, became the hotel’s new owners. In the spring of 2001 the existing building was demolished and completely rebuilt in the record time of 9 months.
In December 2003 the Gardena became the first five-star hotel in Ortisei and in the autumn of 2004 it became a member of Relais & Châteaux, the prestigious international association of 520 charming hotels and gourmet restaurants in more than 60 countries.

Hubert Fischnaller, Gardena’s head chef, and his staff will prepare light dishes and menus for connoisseurs, and always with exacting care and professional skill.
You can choose from a wide variety of dishes consisting of Mediterranean, Italian, regional, international and vegetarian specialities. “We use only the best products and ingredients,” states Hubert Fischnaller, who knows how to satisfy his guests.
“The quality of any culinary creation always starts from the quality of its ingredients: that’s why we use fresh regional products whenever possible and cook them so as to maintain all their nutritive properties.” The hotel restaurant is reserved for hotel guests.

SKIING

The Dolomiti Superski ski circuit ̶ 460 lifts and cableways and 1220 kilometres of slopes ̶ is your gateway to the entire Dolomites region. Val Gardena alone has 84 lifts and cableways and 176 km of slopes where you can enjoy all the excitement of new experiences every day.
There are lots of thrilling adventures to experience on the famous Sella Ronda ski route, leading round the mighty Sella massif and offering 26 km of downhill trails. The just as interesting Val Gardena ski route takes skiers from the Seceda up to Piz Sella or to the Gardena Pass, over the famous Saslong slope.
During the 1970 World Ski Championships, Val Gardena’s slopes became part of skiing history. Since then, the downhill race is held on the Saslong every year to inaugurate the World Ski Cup.

The 18-hole golf course at the foot of the Sciliar, surrounded by blooming meadows and green fir woods, is a real gem that will amaze all those who love this fascinating sport.
A harmonious part of the magnificent scenic countryside of the Dolomites, the course extends over approximately 60 hectares on a plateau at an altitude of 850 m.

VAL GARDENA / DOLOMITES
Val Gardena is perhabs the most famous of the Ladin valleys in the Dolomites, the famous “Pale Mountains”. The Dolomites are named after Déodat de Dolomieu (1750-1801), the French geologist who was the first to study their composition.
Although not a uniform mountain chain, the Dolomites differ from the rest of the Alps owing to their jagged peaks and light and friable rocks that turn striking shades of pink at sunset.
Val Gardena stretches for about 25 km from Ponte Gardena, at the valley entrance, to the Sella Group, with the Sella (2244 m) and Gardena (2137 m) Passes, mandatory gateways to the bordering valleys of Fassa and Badia.
Famous since the XVII century for its still flourishing woodcarving activities, today the valley puts the spotlight on tourism and is divided into the three villages of Ortisei (Urtijëi/ St. Ulrich), S. Cristina (St. Christina) and Selva (Wolkenstein).
ORTISEI
Ortisei/St. Ulrich (or Urtijëi in Ladin) (1236 m above sea level) is the main village in Val Gardena. The ideal vacation spot to visit year round, Ortisei is located in a large basin near the middle of the valley.
The peaks of the Odle on the left and the Siusi Alp on the right soar up from the meadows and woods surrounding the village. The Sella massif, a real rocky stronghold and the superb Sassolungo (3181 m), Val Gardena’s icon, stand out in all their glory in the background.
