The Middle House is an ode to modern-day Shanghai in the middle of historic Dazhongli.

Designed by Italian architect Piero Lissoni using a mixture of Chinese materials like porcelain, ceramic, bamboo and lacquered textures, our House combines an impeccable sense of style with an eclectic art collection and a flair for dramatic entrances.

Our House is home to an energetic collective of talented individuals with fresh ideas, different perspectives and singular personalities. Get to know the people who bring The Middle House to life.

You’ll find our House hidden behind a forest of whispering bamboo in the middle of Shanghai. It’s a masterpiece of artistic simplicity framed by its fascinating contrasts – historic and modern, Italian and Shanghainese, light and dark, bold and neutral, heaven and earth.

At our House we want to create experiences that don’t just feel and look good but that have a positive impact on the world. Sustainable practices have become a conscious part of our day-to-day operation and we are always looking for new ways to conserve the environment.

HOUSES HAVE STORIES TO TELL
The Middle House blends Shanghainese craftmanship and Italian ingenuity. It’s gorgeously composed but never takes itself too seriously.

Surround yourself in the minimalist design with dark atmospheric colours and bold jewel-tones or awaken your senses with our art collection inspired by the curatorial theme “I Dream of China.”

THE ARCHITECT – PIERO LISSONI
Veteran Italian architect Piero Lissoni is famed for his elegant designs, luxurious minimalism and atmospheric interiors.

In designing The Middle House, he used fascinating contrasts to create characterful spaces, gaining inspiration from local artisans to craft the historical Chinese elements that add intricate layers to his contemporary aesthetic.

Enjoy the comfort of a private kitchen, living space and spa-inspired bathroom as well as the personal service of our dedicated Guest Experience team.

PENTHOUSE
Borrowing from modern-day Shanghai’s glamour and spirit, our top-floor Penthouse floats above the city. Piero Lissoni has designed a luxuriously large two bedroom suite with private terraces and expansive entertaining spaces.

And it can be tailored to your needs – from private dining room to intimate boardroom or cocktail reception. It’s 660 square metres of modern minimalist design with a uniquely Shanghai flavour.

GALLERY SUITE
A variety of influences flow together in our Gallery Suite. You’ll find a home in the warm and harmonious space that exudes a sense of place and belonging.

Open plan-layout meets outdoor terrace – all impeccably styled with gorgeous art, custom furniture and crafted Shanghainese detailing that makes this suite a refuge from the hum of the city below.

STUDIO 60
In Studio 60, beautiful views of Shanghai flood in through huge glazed panes. Sunlight fills the space during the day while contemporary light fixtures illuminate after dark. A feeling of warmth and intimacy will wash over you as you sink into the deep foamy bath tub or soft silky linens on the king-size bed.

THE NEW CULINARY CLASSICS
Our restaurants and bars at The Middle House highlight the seasonal and the sublime. Set off on a journey of imaginative flavours and gastronomic experiences.

CAFE GRAY
Your stop for sophisticated, buzzy and bold dining. Our European inspired grand café serves modern continental cuisine with local Asian influences and seasonal ingredients. Café Gray Deluxe outpost boasts an alfresco terrace, intimate dining room and handsome cocktail lounge.

It’s the place to see and be seen. The wrap-around terrace is a hip pre-dinner hangout where you’ll spot Shanghai’s young and well-heeled crowd sipping craft cocktails and watching the city lights.

FRASCA
Our casual Italian eatery and alfresco terrace brings the authentic traditions of the trattoria to Shanghai. Frasca is named after the symbolic hanging branches used to welcome passers-by in Northeast Italy.

Expect heaping bowls of fresh house-made pasta, artisanal charcuterie, crispy pinsa Romana and well-seasoned meats from the chargrill. All washed down with a glass of grappa or Tuscan wine from our Italian-inspired drinks menu.

Using ingredients from around Italy and the freshest local produce from family farms, Chef Lorenzo Merolle ’s regionally inspired menus will take you on a culinary journey from the foothills of the Italian countryside to Rome’s cobblestoned laneways.

SUI TANG LI
Bold designer vibes and a dramatic spiral staircase entrance set the tone at Sui Tang Li. Here, creative modern dim sum and reimagined Chinese classics take the spotflight.

Chef Tony Ye’s kitchen blends Cantonese, Sichuanese and Shanghainese influences with surprising artisanal ingredients for dishes that are playful, imaginative and punchy.

Savour baskets of 5J Cinco Jotas xiaolongbao, dine family style on braised beef short rib or tuck into a bowl of double-boiled Matsutake soup with Tofu.

Pair small bites, divine dumplings and shared plates with a craft cocktail, wine or Chinese wine and tea off our curated drinks list based on the Chinese Five Elements.

SUI TANG SHANG
Our secret cocktail and tea lounge Sui Tang Shang is a laid-back watering hole. Its minimal design pays homage to Chinese craftmanship and Italian style.

Serving craft concoctions inspired by the Five Chinese Elements (Earth, Fire, Wood, Metal, Water), Sui Tang Shang blends artisanal spirits and teas with surprising ingredients.

Relax on jewel-tone armchairs and sip a Golden Buddha, a blend of jasmine tea infused vodka, Osmanthus and floral Anxi Tieguanyin tea. Or try the Shaoxing wine-based Naughty Ball with Yakult, cranberry, peach bitters and roasted white sesame.
