With its five buildings, constructed in styles from different eras, the small Lake Adler and private parkland, the entire site of the hotel on the outskirts of Hinterzarten blends into the landscape. Hiking, Nordic walking and mountain biking in the beautiful natural surroundings are all available from right outside the hotel!

Enjoy the stylish new look at the Parkhotel Adler: With the exception of a few rooms in the historic Black Forest house, all rooms have recently been completely renovated. We have also redesigned our lobby with integrated bar and conservatory as well as the indoor play area for children including the ‘Teen Lounge’.

Our “Pavilion Diva” next to the small Lake Adler has been turned into an extravagant event location. The addition of the glamorous “Bergkristall” room has expanded the existing space for dining and celebratory events in the “Adler Stuben” restaurant.

For 16 whole generations – and that’s what makes us one of the world’s oldest hotels – people have been rolling up their sleeves and working hard to continually reinvent holidays here with us. Over the centuries, the hotel has managed to remain a family-run business – and a highly successful one over the long term, despite a number of adversities.

Today, the Parkhotel Adler has a very high proportion of regular guests! We hope that this will continue to be the case for a long time to come, that’s why we continue to re-invest in the future every year. However, despite all the innovations, we will always remain true to our core philosophy of offering our guests an exclusive, classic hotel experience.

1446
It was in this year that a visionary ancestor of Katja Newman bought the property, together with 80 acres of land and ran it as a manor with rooms for rent, later adding a tavern.

The purchase is documented by local tax records dating from 1446: “Hans Bilstein gives 8 Schillings 3 Pfennigs from his ‘Sessgut’, 9 Schillings from a Gut, i.e. the Schwäbling Gut, 9 Pfennigs from the interest he receives from a Stückle, which he used to purchase the Zartenhof.”

1490
With the establishment of the post office, the business acquired a new purpose: it became a postal station and consequently a focal point for travellers because, as we know today, the carriages not only transported letters but people as well.

1639
The Black Forest House, with the same wooden balcony and imposing roof that is still standing and in use today, opened its doors after just a one year period of construction. The old building burned down during the Thirty Years’ War.

There are only a few remaining, albeit striking details reminiscent of 1639 and the dynamic couple Katharina Riesterer and her husband Franz Gustav, landlady and landlord of the Adler from 1632 to 1680 and 1622 to 1681 respectively.

Their portraits adorn the „Stube“ seating area in the „Adler Stuben“ in the form of murals. There’s also a wall cabinet and shelving dating from that period.

1770
This year sees the marriage of Marie Antoinette, daughter of Maria Theresia and Franz I of Austria, to King Ludwig XVI. in Versailles. Her journey from Vienna to Paris passed via the Black Forest – the trip through the area aided by the construction of the Höllentalstrasse. It is assumed that the later Queen of France stayed at the Adler postal station.

1814
Records show that following the defeat of her spouse Napoleon Bonaparte, Marie Louise, daughter of Emperor Franz II. of Austria and Empress of France, returned to Austria, stopping at the Adler on the way.

1870
Up to this year, the region had been part of the Habsburg dynasty and consequently of Austria. An old inn sign in the Black Forest House still bears witness to this today.

1890
The construction of this building saw the hotelier family take the huge leap to become proprietors of a grand hotel. Built in the Belle Époque style of that time, the hotel became the “Parkhotel Adler”, bringing a touch of glamour to Hinterzarten. What many people no longer realise today is that grand hotel doesn’t mean “large hotel”, instead it’s the term that’s been used for luxury hotels for decades.

1978
The ‘Residenz’, with various apartments, was added on to the Belle-Époque main building. Today, one part of the basement is still used to house the meeting rooms. Around 30 years later the family sold the holiday apartments which are now privately owned.

1996
Dr. Klaus Trescher and his wife Gabriele (née Riesterer) bought the hotel from within the family, consequently rescuing the family business which had been continuing to rely on the splendour of earlier times. Between 1999 and 2015 alone, Dr. Trescher invested around eleven million Euros in its preservation and maintenance.

1999
The new wellness pavilion, with an initial 1,200 square metres of indoor well-being space and one of the first projects implemented by Dr. Klaus Trescher, provided an addition to the hotel offering and fulfilled the new requirements demanded by guests at that time. All these years later, the location in the hotel park, the glass design and timeless style still give it the appearance of having just been built.

ROOMS & SUITES
What are you looking for in an exclusive hotel in the Black Forest? Luxury accommodation in a contemporary, elegant style, with an ambience that is representative of the region and simultaneously the luxury hotel industry? That’s also our idea of a relaxing hotel stay in a traditional area like the Black Forest!

We are continually investing in the design of our rooms and suites in Adler the main building, our legacy from the Belle Époque era, as well as Adler in the original building, the Black Forest House, which has been playing host to guests for over 380 years.

Most of the accommodation is located in this building which was constructed at the end of the 19th century as a luxurious grand hotel with typical Belle Epoque features. All areas of this elegant house now have a stylishly-modern, vintage design look.

Choose from a range of different room categories. The accommodation units are located on the ground floor and four additional floors, are accessible via stairs or using a polished brass lift reminiscent of an earlier era.

ADLER
This category is the ultimate in a feeling of luxury well-being and a relaxed environment for a good night’s sleep, that we have on offer at the Parkhotel Adler.

One of the two, #44, has only recently been created and furnished in an ultra-exclusive design style, with a terrace that opens out onto our private park. The second one, #117, provides an ambience of classic elegance. Both offer views onto the park and are bathed in natural light all day long.

SUITES
This category demonstrates that we are constantly adapting to the needs and wishes of a hotel guest who is accustomed to luxury and wants an exclusive, yet modern suite with a feel-good character.

During the last renovation, we created extremely comfortable and contemporary suites which are intended to create the ultimate relaxing living and sleeping environment. Guests are also highly appreciative of the spaciously designed bathrooms.

FAMILY SUITES
Hotel manager Katja Newman is a mother herself and loves travelling, so she knows exactly what it’s like to be ‘on the road’ with kids. She has chosen the furnishings for these suites with particular care and attention to detail. Her children have a sufficiently large separate play area of their own, the design of which was inspired by a love of children – from décor to furniture.

DELUXE ROOM
The room size alone makes it deluxe – a double room dream for guests looking for extra space, especially in the bathroom. You can while away the hours relaxing in the cosy corner seating area with modern, comfortable furniture.

An extra bed can be placed in the room for a child up to the age of 17, or, depending on the room, the couch can be converted into a sleeping arrangement. Some of these rooms offer a terrace or balcony with outdoor furniture.

ROOMS IN THE BLACK FOREST
There are only eleven rooms and suites in this building for genuine lovers of nostalgia and ‘fans’ of the Black Forest or devotees of a boutique hotel style with an ultra-modern design.

Stay here in this architectural monument and immerse yourself into the history of the hotel and the Black Forest; famous royals such as Marie Antoinette stayed here hundreds of years ago. The accommodation is on the ground floor, or the first floor with a staircase leading up to the accommodation.

The culinary heart of the Parkhotel Adler also beats in the Black Forest House. The easiest way to access the Belle Époque main building and lobby is via the inner courtyard, the children’s play area and Wellness facilities conveniently via the underground corridor which links the buildings together.

JUNIOR SUITE
This Junior Suite with parquet flooring, boxwood windows and traditional country style, offering a touch of romance, epitomises the Black Forest – both in terms the look and feel.

It is actually a small suite as it offers two rooms. The couch can be converted into a bed for the night for up to two children, during the day it turns back into a sofa – ideal for a family holiday in a historic Black Forest house.

FAMILY ROOMS
These new rooms, built in 2020, are designed for families who attach great importance to plenty of space and to elegant and stylish living in the hotel. The bathrooms for example are furnished with Versace interior design elements.

Children and teenagers love being able to spend the night in a mezzanine sleeping area, treating it as an adventure. If younger children are not so keen about sleeping so high up, a bed can be set up in the living room and bedroom.

DELUXE ROOM
The principles of a modern, light and airy boutique hotel style have been skilfully implemented in the furnishing of these new deluxe double rooms. The harmonious interior design and extremely high quality furnishings convey a very calming atmosphere conducive to a good night’s sleep, plus a warm sense of well-being.

The luxury facilities include details such as a retractable TV screen on the bed in one of the rooms. An elegant walkway leads into this newly created accommodation wing in the Black Forest House.

DINING
Culinary enjoyment has always been one of the central elements of our offering, our Black Forest House was after all built for this very purpose in 1639. With the luxury full-board package and the extensive range of components it entails, we offer our hotel guests a new form of luxury dining – this package is included in the overnight rate for adults.

Non-residents are welcome to dine in our restaurant “Adler Stuben” in the evening – you will need to reserve a table in advance! The same applies to guests celebrating an event – we can cater for groups of up to 60.  The lobby bar in our modern and cosy designer reception hall, with direct views of the park, rounds off our diverse range of catering options for all guests.

ADLER STUBEN
Our “Adler Stuben” restaurant in the historic Black Forest House on the outskirts of Hinterzarten, offers you the chance to enjoy a modern dining experience.

Discover the joy of Baden specialty dishes as well as international cuisine, interpreted in an innovative and individual style by Executive Chef kitchen director and spice sommelier Bernhard König. The restaurant is recommended by, amongst others, the Slow Food Guide 2019/2020.

Dining in a relaxed atmosphere without any fuss, yet still retaining that certain something – that’s what our “Adler Stuben” restaurant is all about! The aim is to simply make guests feel at home. There are five seating areas in total, each differing in their interior design.

But there’s one thing they all have in common: They are furnished in an elegant, contemporary and cosy style. On days when it’s suitable for sitting outside, you can sit on the modern-design restaurant terrace beneath the historic wooden balcony of the Black Forest House.

THE LOBBY BAR
New nightlife experience at the Parkhotel Adler in Hinterzarten: Our bar has moved into the new feel-good lobby in the Belle-Èpoque main building. Enjoy a modern ambiance with the warm and friendly service you have to come to expect – choose your favourites from an extensive menu of sophisticated cocktails, classis aperitifs and bar drinks.

A LA CARTE DINING
As far as possible, we use meat, fish, vegetables, fruit and dairy products from regional companies that focus on sustainability and quality. We purchase our game from hunters from the Southern Black Forest Nature Park. However, some ingredients, such as meat in particular, are unique for specific international dishes or for seasonal reasons we source our ingredients from the best in the world.

We serve up tasty dishes, with all the ingredients coming from our own orchard and garden. We’re confident we can also convince you that with our fish dishes as well as our distinctive love of “cooking with spices”, your love of meat-free dishes is very close to our heart!

EVENTS
Private parties and company celebrations for up to 60 people can be held in the “Adler Stuben”. You and your up to 30 guests can enjoy a private celebration in our rustic “Stable” event location by the duck pond in the park. For parties of up to 60 people, our extravagant “Pavilion Diva”, also set in its own grounds, is an appropriate venue for open-end celebrations.

WEDDINGS IN THE BLACK FOREST
Where can we find an ideal wedding location for getting married in a hotel in the Black Forest? This is often the next question for newlyweds in and around Freiburg, Switzerland and the Alsace region after the marriage proposal has been accepted.

Is the intention to hold the entire marriage ceremony in one place and at the same time create a festive and really romantic, yet relaxed atmosphere? In that case, why not celebrate it at the Parkhotel Adler?

The charming rooms in buildings dating from various centuries, together with the outdoor areas on the natural landscape of our estate, create precisely this atmosphere almost by themselves – whether for summer or winter weddings.

SPA & WELLNESS
Wellness holidays in the heart of the Black Forest is exactly what you will experience at first hand here with us – during your Hotel stay or as a Day Spa visitor. Thanks to the Wellness Pavilion being located in the Hotel park and its predominantly glass design, you have uninterrupted views of the natural surroundings from many areas in the building.

Brightness, a calm atmosphere and muted colours, enhance the pleasant ambience in the spa. A team of eight staff looks after our guests in the treatment rooms. You can also book a hairdresser’s appointment with us. The fitness room is open for you all day.

We are located in an area that as recently as 2017 again won recognition as a curative health resort that meets the “premium class” criteria for air quality – there are only 16 of these places throughout Germany, so you really can ‘take a breather’ here!

POOL & SAUNA
Our Wellness Pavilion has been designed to ensure that the whole area is bathed in natural daylight. Furthermore, Nature provides a special, reflective backdrop for our pools – with views from here straight across to the Hotel Park with meadow and wood.

In the outside area, for most of the year the sound of birdsong completes the natural ambience. In addition to the sun-bathing areas, you can relax on the adjacent lawn. Incidentally, we don’t limit the number of towels you can have – you can use as many as you need for your comfort.

In our aroma soft sauna, you’ll experience the beneficial effects of breathing in fragrances such as mint, eucalyptus, citrus orange or lemon grass. These act on the body and your well-being in various ways – helping you to breathe easier, refreshing, stimulating, mood enhancing or motivating , depending upon which fragrance is added.

Spending time in our red-hot earth sauna is a wonderful experience, the basic concept of which we have the Finns to thank for. The open fire in the middle of the sauna, which is shaped like a circular mound of earth, warms body, mind and soul alike.

The pinewood used comes from the northern regions of Europe. It was treated and stored in a special way until it was suitable for use in the sauna. The so-called kelo wood plays its own part in the deep-cleansing effect. A spell in the steam bath rounds off the sauna experience! You can then spend time resting in the sauna area or in the lounger areas around the pools.

You might be surprised to find that we don’t open the saunas until midday: we’ve learned from past experience over many years that this area isn’t used before then. However, saving energy is part of our internal approach to sustainability – so, as a responsible company, we are guided by the actual needs of our guests.

TREATMENTS & MASSAGES
Treatments at the Parkhotel Adler will be managed by the experienced Christine Homburger. In the beauty area and for facial and body treatments, she swears by the premium products of Maria Galland, SanVINO and Étre belle.

You can also have your hair cut by a trained senior hairdresser or a bridal hairstyling in the hairdressing salon of the Wellness area – arrange an appointment with Sylke Henkel.

DAY SPA
Our spa is a place of calm where people come to be rejuvenated in the heart of our hotel park – the wellness area covers a total of 1,800 m2. There’s also enough space for day spa guests from Hinterzarten and the surrounding area as well as from all over the Black Forest.

As a non-resident, you can choose between the simple use of the spa facilities – annual passes are also available – or combining this with treatments. A swim in our pools is a rare chance to enjoy the wonder of nature and with the massages and treatments from our spa professionals you can really feel yourself unwind!

LEISURE
The Parkhotel Adler estate offers so many leisure activities that some guests don’t actually leave the site during their stay – which is almost a pity because the Black Forest has excellent signposted hiking, Nordic walking, mountain biking and cross-country skiing routes, as well as golf courses.

With a number of superb destinations for excursions, the region is also a hit with lovers of lakes, winter sports enthusiasts as well as those with an interest in culture and adventure seekers.

PRIVATE HOTEL PARK
We have been called Parkhotel for so long that we know longer give so much thought to its significance. Our guests on the other hand are always very impressed with the special feature of being able to use a park four hectares in size both in the summer and winter.

Access to our meadow is through a large iron gate. The actual sanctuary the extends behind the Wellness Pavilion. Pathways lead across the site which we have consciously left relatively untouched in its original state. The many animals that live here are grateful to us for this. Breathe in the refreshing air in the wood and listen to the sounds of nature!

Our hotel park is also used as a location for celebrations such as weddings, e.g. for receptions or photo shoots. So, from time to time you may see a horse-drawn carriage or a horse-drawn sleigh passing by.

The remainder of our estate – that’s another three hectares – is open to the general public as the area is crossed by various paths that lead to trails along the boundaries of the site. These lead for example to Lake Adler or to the summer ski jump located directly behind the Parkhotel Adler. Take a stroll along our little Lake Adler. In summer you’ll even see cows grazing in the lakeside meadow.

GOLF
Of all golf courses in the surrounding area of the Parkhotel Adler, the 18-hole course of the Golfclub Hochschwarzwald e. V. is the nearest. The course is just approx. eight minutes away by car for hotel guests. The overnight stay rate includes the green fee for one round of golf a day – we will be happy to arrange the times with the golf club for you.

Nestled in the hilly landscape, rich in meadows and forests, this course provides an interesting challenge even for golfers with low handicaps. The experience is rounded off by a wide range of sessions from pros as well as the “Golfstüble” for the on-site catering.

GOLF SCHOOL
The pros of the Black Forest Golf School in the golf club of the same name, were trained by the PGA of Germany. Guests can book private lessons with the golf professionals direct – please ask for contact details when making a room reservation at the hotel.

On request, the golf school will also provide a professional golf club fitting service using the corresponding technical measuring devices. During the golf season and by arrangement, courses are offered for different skill levels – a minimum and maximum number of participants is required.

SUMMER HOLIDAYS
The summer outdoor season here starts at the end of April – we are happy to provide our personal tips for adults and their leisure activities in the Black Forest below. We have produced separate information for families.

The Black Forest is famous all over the world – for its cuckoo clocks, its unique landscape with the coniferous forests and rustic Black Forest houses as well as the traditional dress of the local people, including the ‘Bollenhut’ hat which is today only worn on certain occasions.

A less well-known fact is that this region in the southwest of Germany is divided into separate areas. Ours is named the High Black Forest because this is where the highest points in the region can be found.

The highest of all being the Feldberg, at 1,493 metres. The other special features of the surrounding area are the mountain lakes and gorges as well as the healthy air, so healthy in fact that it has won awards!

HIKING & GEOCACHING
Take the opportunity to go hiking through the area around us – we’ve got maps for you! Many of the trails start right outside the front of the hotel! Ask also about our guided tours! Another popular activity is geocaching – the Nature Park Administrative Authority has drawn up a guideline for pursuing it.

E-BIKE & MOUNTAIN BIKE
Use one of the hotel’s mountain bikes to explore the Black Forest – these are subject to availability and rental is included in your accommodation rate. You can rent e-bikes from us for the daily price of € 30.00 – reservation is recommended. Route tips: available through us.

NORDIC WALKING
The Southern Black Forest Nature Park also has 900 kilometres of signposted Nordic walking trails – four gentle to difficult trails start at Hinterzarten.

WINTER HOLIDAYS
Snow is expected to start falling in the Black Forest from winter. It usually sets in in December and stays – or returns – up to approx. the end of March. However, since we are not a winter sports hotel but a year-round hotel, this usually doesn’t matter so much for our guests – even though “Hinterzarten in white” is of course a spectacular sight.

Here with us, you will enjoy a winter holiday far away from the hustle and bustle! Just leave the car behind as its easy for our guests to walk around the area here in winter.

WINTER WALKS
Either simply go for a walk through our hotel site with private park which looks particularly attractive in the snow, or you can take one of the many local winter walking and hiking trails from outside the hotel. Snowshoeing is also becoming increasingly popular – meeting place: very near to our hotel.

TOBOGGANING
Our Adler inclusive services also include the free hire of winter toboggans – our hotel park and smaller hills in Hinterzarten offer ample opportunity for tobogganing.

BLACK FOREST MUSEUM
The museum, housed in a historic farm in Hinterzarten, is located not far from us – what could be a more appropriate time of the year than winter to pay it a visit?

WINTER SPORTS
Hinterzarten itself lies in the mountains of the High Black Forest but is not a classic winter sports destination. That’s why most guests seeking to spend a quiet winter holiday come to the Parkhotel Adler.

Nevertheless, those who love winter sports will not have to miss out on these when staying with us. The approximate time it takes to reach the respective destinations by car is shown in the brackets.

SKIING
The long-established Thoma family operates a straightforward ski resort here on the outskirts of the village. There are also various “family lifts” located in the region – the nearest are in Titisee-Neustadt (10 minutes).

SNOWTUBING
Another activity that offers great fun is Snowtubing which can be found e.g. in Lenzkirch (15 minutes). There are also a number of tobogganing slopes around the Hinterzarten area, some of which are floodlit and normally offer toboggan hire.

WINTER SPORT
All the things that make the ski season so attractive can be found in the Feldberg winter sports centre located at a height of 950-1,400 metres above sea level (30 minutes): 14 lifts, 16 slopes, the badenova Snowpark – very popular with freestylers – equipment hire and catering in huts. There are two providers offering snowkiting sessions.

FAMILY VACATIONS
The very first activities to mention of course are the many walking and hiking opportunities from right outside the hotel to the surrounding area – Hinterzarten is part of the Southern Black Forest Nature Park Region. We’ll be happy to give you advice at the hotel Reception: Some of our employees are actually certificated Nature Park guides!

One of the special features is our gorges – that much we can already reveal. Nearby are the Ravenna and Wutach Gorges – two spectacular wonders of nature. The Hinterzarten nature adventure trail is just a short distance away on foot – the motto of the trail: the joy of nature, an all-round sensory experience.
