THE HISTORY
Rue de Buci is one of the oldest streets in Paris. It is first found in records dating back to the 12th century, occasionally with the spelling Buci, Bussy, Bucy or Bussi…

What we do know is that that it was located near the fortified abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Together with Rue Saint-André-des-Arts, Rue du Four, Rue de Sèvres and Rue Lecourbe, it created a path that, in the year 1000, led from Petit Chatelet in the south-west to the Clos de Laas and Clos Gibart, with an abrupt junction in the south that bypassed the Abbey.

To protect the city of Paris, from the 13th century onwards, walls stood around the Ile de la Cité. In 1190, before embarking on his crusade, Philippe Auguste asked the people of Paris to help ensure the security of the city by building a wall of some 5km in length. It was completed in 1210 and was composed of a round path, interspersed with a dozen gates. One of these was located on Rue de Buci.

The Porte de Buci took its name from Simon de Buci, the first President of the Parliament of Paris, who bought the gate in 1350 in order to earn money from the taxes paid on merchandise entering Paris. It was also known as the “Street that stretches from the Pilori to the Porte de Buci” because of a pillory that stood next the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés…

It would be impossible to tell the full story of the neighbourhood’s rich history from the Classical period to the Revolution in so few words. However, the Rue de Buci itself appears to have remained almost completely unchanged until the 19th century.

We have very little specific information about the history of the Artus Hotel, a hotel that lies in the heart of Paris. When it was first created, it was called the Hotel Buci Latin and belonged to a family that also owned many other hotels in France.

Jean-Max Hurand, who had already owned the Terrass Hotel since 1911, the Madison Hotel in Saint-Germain-des-Prés since 1985 and the Hotel Bourgogne & Montana in the stylish 7th arrondissement of Paris since 1991, bought this central Parisian hotel with its 27 rooms on Rue de Buci in 2004, renaming it the Artus Hotel.

A member of Hôtels Maurice Hurand ever since, this hotel in the heart of Paris represents a new style of hotel. Under the direction of Grégoire Berthelot, its rooms were fully updated in the winter of 2013. More recently it closed its doors for two and a half months for a full renovation.

This revamp loudly and proudly proclaims a love of the 1950s, thus fully immersing the hotel in the history of its neighbourhood. The Artus Hotel, a true witness of the golden age of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, a melting pot of French modernity, the main schools of modern thought and a hub of artistic energy!
