THE HISTORY
The Xara Palace Relais & Châteaux, opened in 1999, and is inextricably linked to the history of Mdina, its walls forming part of the bastion walls that surround this hilltop city. Upon their arrival in Malta, the Knights of St John were granted Citta Notabile, (Noble City) as Mdina was then known.
The Xara Palace was built in the 17th Century as a residence for the noble family Moscati Parisio. During their 268 year stay in Malta the Knights embellished, fortified and rebuilt Mdina so that today we have a fascinating and untouched jewel in our heritage.
The Xara Palace Relais & Châteaux incorporated their exclusive, Michelin Star restaurant, the de Mondion, into the bastion walls – with breathtaking views of the island! It also operates a causal restaurant, Trattoria AD 1530 in the Piazza, in the front of the hotel, offering casual dining in a picturesque setting.
This is a truly unique establishment, full of charm, character and calm for the pleasure of the discerning visitor. Whether you are after a honeymoon, a wedding, a cultural stay or simply an exclusive getaway, The Xara Palace has it all.
PRESIDENTIAL SUITE
Oozing an aura of grandeur and richness, the Presidential Suite offers comfort and fine living fit for a king, justifying its status as the most luxurious of duplex suites. Spread over an area of approximately 65 sq m, The Presidential Suite is an ideal family room, an intimate private entertaining venue and luxurious setting for romantic dinners.
The Presidentail Suite offers an interesting selection of period pieces of furniture – from an antique dining table for 6 persons to a period writing table, an antique chest of drawers and an imposing guilded mirror of impressive dimensions. All this is expertly complimented by carefully selected soft furnishings and drapes, comfortable sofas and arm chairs, old lamps and original works of art.
The magical sensation of Mdina is immediately felt when one steps out onto the balcony – typical of palazzos built in the 17th century. From here one can enjoy the majestic building of The Vilhena Palace – a building which once housed the Law Courts in the time of the knights.
Wooden steps lead up to the second level. From here one can appreciate the original beams, very characteristic of such high ceilings. Comfortable private facilities in the form of a marble clad bathroom and an inviting bedroom provide all the expected modern comforts in a historical setting.
DELUXE SUITE WITH TERRACE & JACUZZI
Uniquely designed with style and luxury firmly in mind, these Deluxe Suites boast a stunning private sun deck terrace and outdoor Jacuzzi, set atop the bastion fortifications – guaranteeing unsurpassed views while cooling off in your own private Jacuzzi on a hot day or simply relaxing and enjoying the stars at night.
Forming part of the highest point of the hotel, one not only commands 180-degree views of the island but from this vantage point one can admire the beautiful cupola of the Mdina Metropolitan Cathedral.

EXECUTIVE SUITE WITH PANORAMIC VIEW
Truly one of a kind, The Executive Suite with Panoramic view is unique in decor and location within the walls of this ancient palazzo, proving to be an extremely sought-after suite which falls under a totally new category.
Situated in the hotel’s first floor, the ‘Piano Nobile’, the suite boasts elegant grandeur with eye-catching original features and a large gilded mirror as soon as you set foot into the suite.
Wall mounted tapestries, the wonderfully restored headboard, period pieces of furniture, comfortable sofas and arm chairs. A king size bed draped with luxurious bed linen and a number of occasional cushions guarantee total rest and comfort.
The most recognizable feature in the room is the free-standing mirror bath that is situated right next to the bed, and a few inches away from two windows from which one can enjoy spectacular views of the island.
Relaxing and subtle colour schemes are visible in this suite, from the pale wall colouring to the lavish drapes that hang tall and majestic in the allotted space.
The vista from the level of this suite is totally mesmerising – a 180 degree view of the Island stretching as far as the deep blue Mediterranean sea on the horizon during the day and the immense star filled dark sky at night time.
This Executive Suite with Panoramic view also has a lavish lounge area, overlooking the hotel atrium that feels and looks like a riad. This suite is supremely recommended for honeymooners and those pursuing a unique holiday experience.

True Mediterranean cooking can be seen to share a variety of commonalities across countries – with more or less subtle variations – based on having a similar climate and produce, such as olive oil, sheep and goat cheeses, beans, cereals, fish, a sparing use of meats, nuts and the use of regional fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices.

The Mdina Metropolitan Cathedral Museum is housed within a magnificent baroque building, on the right-hand side of the Cathedral, in Archbishop’s Square. This imposing edifice was built by Bishop Alpheran de Bussan, with the first stone being laid in 1733. This building was to serve as the seminary for the Diocese of Malta.
