THE HISTORY
The story of “AQUATIO” begins with a drop, a simple and pure figure which, with its incessant falling, shapes the material, forms the spaces, the furnishings, the structure.

A drop is the bronze work of art by Kengiro Azuma “MU765G”, located in one of the two main entrances of the structure, which summarizes in its simplicity the meaning of life through the metaphor of the water cycle.

The whiteness and sinuosity of the drop guided the architect Simone Micheli’s design work during the figuration of the interior spaces, in the definition of the furnishings, in the creation of the fascinating and skilled lighting design.

The drop, with its perseverance and intrinsic purity, animated the work of the architect Cosimo dell’Acqua during the realization of the general and executive project of the architectural and distributive recovery of the Borgo.

The drop summarizes the millennial origin of the Sassi di Matera and their characteristics:

  • Erosion: the erosive action of a drop of water that with time and patience digs the limestone banks, shaping the landscape and making it unique;
  • Custody: the water collected to the last drop by the Matera population through natural or expertly built quarries, kept in cisterns, wells, basins and divers as a precious asset;
  • Aggregation: neighbourhoods developed around the cisterns, small communities of citizens who shared everyday life through water.

The Latin phrase “Gutta cavat lapidem” (“the drop digs the rock”) clearly expresses the character of the inhabitants of these ancient districts as time and patience can lead to great results.

ROOMS & SUITES
“Aquatio” is a widespread hotel, a receptive structure that consists of 35 rooms and suites that are located on a ridge of the Sasso Caveoso district of Matera, in the district called Conche dating back to the thirteenth century. The 35 rooms have been expertly designed and furnished by the famous architect Simone Micheli.

The rooms structurally trace the ancient caves dug into the tuff, as in the original houses, but are enriched with modern and functional technologies and furnishings, ideal for reliving these places in comfort and luxury.

SUITE
The rooms extend up to 30 or 45 square meters. They have a unique environment and enjoy large spaces that structurally trace the ancient caves dug into the tuff.

All our rooms are equipped with individually controlled air conditioning / heating, flat TV with pay-TV platform, safe, minibar, free Wi-Fi connection, Nespresso coffee machine in the Suites and kettle in the Deluxe rooms.

The comfort of each room is guaranteed by a computerized monitoring system for the air recycling treatment and internal relative humidity control: this is to avoid boring and unhealthy presence of humidity.

THE SPA
The wellness centre is a space of about 500 square meters where this motto is best expressed; in fact, it is a suggestive place and occupies the deepest heart of the structure, recovering underground rooms dating back to the 9th century.

The largest cave compartment housed old cisterns recovered and now transformed into the infinity edge pool, plastered with traditional techniques. There is no shortage of single and couple massage spaces, beauty cabins, and relaxation areas.

The water returns to where it has always been to remember the old basins that were located along the ridge, first functional to the daily life of the inhabitants of the district from which it takes its name, now luxury spaces dedicated to well-being.

The history of Aquatio is inextricably linked to the water that is life, to the drop that shapes the rocks.

MEETINGS & EVENTS
For your meetings with associates, colleagues or clients, Aquatio Cave Luxury Hotel & Spa offers a stimulating, suggestive Convivium Room, carved into the tuff and in line with the style of all the rooms.

Enriched with technologies, modern and functional furnishings and instruments designed to facilitate remote connection and video conferences, the room ensures the success of small meetings for up to 30 people.

The MICE CARE protocol was written with the aim of guaranteeing safety and welcoming business guests: cleaning and sanitizing spaces, scheduling arrivals and departures of large groups, adoption of disposable work materials.

We offer planners rooms and suites equipped with comfort, functionality and style. The professionalism of the staff and maximum flexibility for managing the event complete the service.

The technologically advanced rooms have been equipped in a functional way for social distancing, and are also able to offer hybrid solutions, with some of the guests in presence and others virtually connected.
