In 1805, Napoleon Bonaparte founded the Grand Duchy. of Berg with Düsseldorf as capital of this territory. It also established the era in which the Breidenbacher Hof was opened for the first time.

DÜSSELDORF’S BAKER EXTRAORDINAIRE
For history buffs and food lovers alike wondering what to see in Düsseldorf; Flour runs in Josef’s veins. His great-grandparents, Jean and Katharina Hinkel, first opened their bakery in 1891, and Josef still bakes ‘printen’ (a special kind of gingerbread) using their original recipe.

Today, he oversees the two family-run bakeries in downtown Düsseldorf, and can often be seen waving a cheery ‘hello’ as he cycles to the market with fresh loaves of bread each morning.

A HEAVENLY DAY OUT
Looking for things to see in Düsseldorf on your next holiday? A hearty dish with a poetic name, Himmel und Ähd is made from black pudding, onions, mashed potatoes and apple sauce.

Christian Benninghoven, who manages the farm, grows special Wellant apples (‘the sky’) and Madeira potatoes (‘the earth’) to create a uniquely sustainable interpretation of the dish.

THIS WAY FOR GOOD BEER
Beer plays a crucial role in German culture and society – and Düsseldorf is brimming with traditional and innovative breweries, each with their own recipes. A highlight of the tour includes the Zum Schlussel (‘the keys’) brewery.

Run by Karl-Heinz Gatzweiler, whose family have been brewing since 1313, it’s named for the traditional custom of keeping the keys to the town gates in nearby public houses.

In the process of focusing on these topics, we discovered that there is an abundance of passionate and dedicated farmers and producers in the Lower Rhine region, who create excellent sustainable products.

In extensive personal meetings, we experienced their stories, passion and motivation, which immediately captivated us. We now source many high quality, local and seasonal products from these partnerships. Handling these on a daily basis has increased our joy and appreciation for food even beyond our usual levels.

We are now driven to explore our regional farms in search of the best potatoes, the tastiest milk or the freshest eggs. We are incredibly proud to know our farmers personally, to learn about their animals and plants and to become a part of this community.
