Castello di Buttrio

Beyond the wrought iron gate, a delightful charming hotel awaits to welcome guests. An exclusive setting where you can stay and enjoy the peace and tranquility, surrounded by a breath-taking panorama, overlooking the natural amphitheater of the vineyards. Go for a stroll along the silent paths and let yourself be enraptured by the scents of nature, in the shade of century-old trees.

The first floor can be accessed via a wooden staircase from an early twentieth-century Trieste cruise ship, integrated into the villa at the time of the Morpurgo barons and recently restored. Within you will find a space where you can purchase artisanal products from the Le Sûr line, inspired by the Friulian tradition.

Wide spaces exert a softly refined charm for a stay dedicated to tranquility, nestled on comfy sofas and surrounded by exquisite fabrics. This is the type of hospitality you will encounter with the staff at Castello di Buttrio, to gift you the pleasure of savoring time.

Let yourself be pampered by the tender loving care that can only be found in a small hotel: an aperitif in front of the fireplace, a glass of wine in your room or under a starry summer sky, a suggestion for a tailor-made itinerary or a quaint reading corner where, from time to time, you can catch a glimpse of the lovely countryside.

A row of large halls for guests of the historic home, for receptions and private events. The stuccos and the two original liberty doors are paired with pastel colors, exquisite fabrics and an imposing boat-shaped Rezzonico Murano chandelier all the way to the Venetian terrace from the early 1900s.

Overlooking the garden, let your gaze wander down to the sea. Breakfast is also served outdoors in summer, and the hall may be reserved for a private lunch or dinner surrounded by a quiet and elegant atmosphere.

The charm of a crackling fire, stone walls and exposed beams. A cozy spot for private dinners or to engage in an intimate chat amid whispers and faces illuminated by flickering flames, relaxing, reading, tasting one of the company’s wines.

THE PARK
The large green area surrounding the castle gives you a taste of the varied Friulian landscape and the wonderful balance between the natural environment and human intervention in this area.

A green oasis that extends down the hill along a hornbeam avenue to an area below brimming with oaks, yews, maritime pines, green meadows and woods of maples, acacias, exotic loquats and magnolias.

Large cypresses stand on the hill and secular plants all around it, including a monumental mulberry tree of rare beauty.

THE VILLA
The mighty stone columns that frame an early twentieth-century gate featuring refined liberty motifs with the coat of arms and initials of Baron Elio Morpurgo (1858-1944) are the first sight to meet guests’ eyes.

They then go on to discover the eighteenth-century villa, with a neoclassical façade and liberty inserts, where the rooms of the wine resort are located.

THE PALAZZO
A noble seventeenth-century palazzo delimits the garden. It extends from the square tower to the crenellated neo-Gothic circular one, both with exposed brickwork. It is adorned with a round arch entrance, three French windows with stone balustrades on the first floor and a series of elliptical windows in the attic topped by a continuous serrated cornice.

THE FARMHOUSES & STABLES
The buttresses used to fortify the ancient castle have been partially incorporated into the masonry of the rustic farmhouses with the adjacent stables; several battlement portions of some surrounding walls stand to this day in a succession that encloses the gardens all around.

THE CHURCH
Past the lodging house, you will come across the fourteenth-century church of Santi Gervasio e Protasio, where weddings may be celebrated.

A ring path leads away from the park, with its cypresses, magnolias, black and white hornbeams, walnuts and laurels, cedars of Lebanon and maritime pines, winding its way around the hill: go for a stroll and watch the work in the vineyards.

AGRITOURISM
At the foot of the hill of Pampinutta, the Tra Le Vigne agritourism makes guests feel at home in a rustic and elegant setting in the heart of the countryside.

THE ROOMS
Each room offers a breath-taking view of the surrounding vineyards. The room sizes ranges from 25 to 35 square meters and they are furnished in a refined country style, with special attention given to the selection of colors and fabrics.

A romantic and welcoming atmosphere permeates the rooms and the large common areas on the ground floor, complete with little nooks where you can go for a chat in front of the fireplace, a bit of relaxing reading or a tasting of the wines of Castello di Buttrio.

THE BISTROT
offers typically Friulian dishes which you can savor by the fire, in winter, and on the panoramic terrace, during the summer months.

In a welcoming and familiar environment, the kitchen offers regional mainstays and the typical specialties of these hills: cold cuts and cheeses, first courses, grilled meats.

VINEYARDS
Wine is tradition yet also innovation, it must be deferential towards the grape and respect the sense of the place, enhancing it. To me, these are the fundamental conditions for high-quality and unique wine-making. (Alessandra Felluga owner)

The first objective, on these hills where vines , was to understand and capitalize on the wealth of historic vineyards, considered the real heritage of the company.

Cultivated around the castle, within an area of about 10 hectares, they date back to circa 1940 and, with their various indigenous varietals, represent the wine history of Friuli. These plants, pillars of time, instinctively convey strength and give balance and structure to the wine.

The ability to face and overcome the climatic changes of these past years are the result of painstaking commitment and paying close attention to the seasons. The use of equipment and natural products, mechanical weeding, pruning dedicated to each individual plant, reflect our profound respect for this environment, protected and enhanced following nature’s rhythms.

Production in historic vineyards is based on low yields and the grapes reward with wines with a clear, elegant and defined character. In some small plots, the soil is aerated by hand-hoeing, while harvest takes place in small boxes after a careful selection of the grapes. The vineyards frame the Castle of Buttrio with their terraces in a motionless image of suspended beauty.

Precious vineyards dating back to the 1930s, 1940s and early 1950s with tall and austere vines, marked by time, which constantly yield high-quality wines, even in the least favorable years.

Cultivated with friulano, merlot, verduzzo, malvasia, ribolla, the old vineyards are the natural continuation of the garden surrounding the castle. Together with maritime pines, cypresses, very fragrant osmanthus and magnolias, they are the silent guardians of the history of Castello di Buttrio.

The vineyards, laid out along the hillside and near the castle, embrace the panorama that extends to the Castle of Udine. They receive the best and most exposure and their vines are distributed in accordance with the microclimate of each part.

The rows of black grape varieties, which require more sun to ripen, are set in the highest areas, and white grape varieties in the lower fresh ones plots, to best preserve the fragrances and aromas.

THE WINES
Grapes that are painstakingly looked after during harvest time in order ensure the rich and multi-faceted bouquet and palate notes are not lost. In the hot years, there are hints of white peach, a nuance of citrus and tropical fruits. In the cold years, notes of elderberry and forest flowers prevail, and intense and elegant fine field herbs.

THE WINE CELLAR
The authenticity of wine is its intrinsic quality, that creation is manifested through the will of man, making it vibrate in a kaleidoscope of modulations, continually referencing their place of origin. White wines are vinified in steel tanks and remain on the lees for about 5/6 months, before being bottled. When the vintage permits, some selected grapes give rise to Reserves.

The black grape varieties are de-stemmed and subsequently undergo maceration on the skins, some wines are aged in wood. Rosso Riserva is a selection of the best red grapes from favorable vintages.

THE TERRITORY
Castello di Buttrio is the perfect synthesis between nature and the patient work of man. Where time is made place. Beneath the castle and the annexes built in later periods, nature is the silent witness to the long winemaking tradition of these hills, dotted with centuries-old trees and large luxuriant plants. The rows of old and new vineyards paint a landscape of rare beauty and infinite harmony.

This context provides the ideal conditions for the vine, here it acquires the elements that give the wine its connotation. Understanding and capitalizing on this wealth, with respect for the natural cycles of plants and their grapes, with devotion to daily work, in the vineyard and in the cellar, are the core principles behind Castello di Buttrio.

THE TERROIR
The varietals express their full potential, through the land that makes them grow, thanks to a perfect balance between the climate, exposure and soil. The ponca, or flysch, is a special parent rock typical of this area, a sedimentary formation consisting of repeated layers of generally marly limestone and sandstone deposited by water flow in the Eocene period.

The bottle labels of Castello di Buttrio wines hold a universe of meanings linked to the identity of the territory where these wines are born. During the castle renovation works, salt for drying silkworms was discovered.

This was the inspiration behind the minute details of the decorative background motif, diversely rendered for the different wines, based on original Friulian textile tradition. The castle stands on the center of the hill overlooking the rows is the symbol of the enduring link between the territory and its winemaking tradition.

A choice that, once more, conveys the value of a work inherited and passed down through the generations as a mission, love for a unique land rich in traditions, and the desire to share it.

THE HISTORY
Five generations of winemakers in the heart of Friuli Colli Orientali. The hill of Pampinutta, home to the vines for centuries. In this land where vines have been cultivated since the Middle Ages, time permeates everything with an ancient memory and is the custodian of a precious and tangible past that is handed down through the generations.

The history of this place begins within the crenellated walls of the ancient castle, originally built in a strategic position circa the 11th century and subsequently destroyed.

The current castle, which was rebuilt in 1600, dominates the rolling expanse of the territory known as the Friuli Colli Orientali, stretching as far as the eye can see towards the sea and the mountains.

Disputed and assaulted, the scene of subsequent transformations, it was home to numerous families, from the Lords of Buttrio to the Morpurgo, until it became the property of Marco Felluga in 1994.

His daughter, Alessandra Felluga, began a long restoration process which included a gradual expansion of the land, the recovery of historic vineyards and the establishment of a vineyard and winery founded on excellence, with the utmost respect for the territory and its authenticity. Our wine recounts a tale of the soil, of stories and emotions, of places and of the men who inhabited them.

THE FAMILY
From generation to generation, a skillfully rendered legacy. Marco Felluga purchased the property in 1994 and began the restoration of the castle and historic vineyards, the real heritage of the company. A project that is being currently carried on by his daughter Alessandra and his granddaughters with determination and dedication, reflecting their personality and style.

The essence of this place is revealed slowly, every day teaching you something, it gradually unfolds over the years as the light and breeze blowing over these hills. It is permeated with the slow care of hardworking hands, of seasons spent in the vineyard, time waiting in the cellar, of tender affections imbued in the wine.

Today, Castello di Buttrio is at the center of a story where past, present and future coexist in perfect harmony. The castle is made up of buildings dating back to different time periods which have been exquisitely restored.

The old vineyards coexist with the new ones, and they all receive attentive and scrupulous care. All this contributes to the identity of a unique place, suspended in a slower time.
