Before Fairlawns became a boutique hotel in 1997, it was originally a ten-acre family home, owned by the Brenthurst Trust of Oppenheimer fame, sporting stables, a training rink, a cow (just one), geese, dogs, and two teenage children.
In 1994 the eastern section bounding on Bowling Ave was sold to developers and the residential estate known as Camelot was built on the site. An offer from developers for the western section took a bit more soul-searching before being sold as it meant loosing not only an historical cottage, but the lunge rink and grazing, which in effect meant parting with the horses.
It was only once the family was left with the remaining three acres and the original homestead that Mr. Thacker decided to realize his dream of having a ‘country hotel’ – albeit in the heart of Sandton, the new CBD of Johannesburg.
The original accommodation block comprised 12 suites, each uniquely decorated. Apart from the African Suite, they are mostly euro-centric in their decorating with high ceilings, elaborate cornicing, tall doors and sumptuous fabrics.
The architecture of the original ranch-style home and stables were changed to a more Palladian style, reminiscent of late 18th century homes in England. One thing all agree on is that one definitely does not feel as if one were in Johannesburg, minutes from the nerve center of South Africa’s economy.
With its addition of 20 Grand Chateau Suites, 6 Villa suites, a 240 sqm Maison Spa Suite fit for royalty, and the 470 sqm Villa Moji Fairlawns can rightfully be included among the best boutique hotels in the country.
Fairlawns Boutique Hotel & Spa is committed to joining the global revolution of conscious business. We are constantly looking for ways to decrease our carbon footprint and increase our commitment to improving the quality of our world. To date our contributions are as follows:
- All heating in the new Grand Chateau Suites is supplied by Solar Power.
- The Gran Chateau Suites have a Grey Water System that recycles all water into clean and toxin free water that may be used as irrigation.
- Our kitchen uses organic and local produce wherever available.
- We are proud members of SASSI (Sustainable Seafood), our restaurant is committed to only serving seafood that is not endangered in anyway.
- We actively recycle materials wherever possible.
Grand Chateau Suite
In true Fairlawns style, each room is individually decorated, echoing the original ideas of the Courtyard and Villa suites, yet with a modern contemporary twist. The building process and day to day energy preservation was a key factor considered in the building of this new wing of the hotel.
The public area on both levels creates a cozy atmosphere with lounges and large sandstone fireplaces. A lift provides easy access to the second level and the environment is wheelchair friendly.
Courtyard Suite
These 54sqm suites are individually decorated with beautiful hand-painted techniques, high corniced ceilings, sumptuous fabrics and custom made classical furniture.
The spacious bathrooms are fully equipped with marble vanities, large separate showers and baths. Working fireplaces enhance the romanticism of the suites. Each Suite is a work of Art in its own right.
Villa Suite
Three of the suites have balconies, the others open onto an oak-shaded terrace. Some have guest cloakrooms, all but one have separate lounges, and all are equipped with double basins, bidets, separate showers and jet baths, towel warmers, as well as under-tile floor heating in the bathrooms and all with working fireplaces.
Tree House Studio
Named for its positioning in the treetop canopy, this two bedroom family suite is the latest addition to the Fairlawns offering. With its state of the art kitchen, lounge and dining room, this suite is ideally suited to longer family stays.
Maison Spa Suite
Previously known as the Presidential Spa Suite, this traditional opulent European style villa, boasts 240 sqm of luxury. The Maison Spa Suite offers two private en-suite bedrooms, a dining room and spacious lounge.
To sleep in the master bedroom is an experience in itself, with its four-poster bed, working fireplace, French doors leading onto a balcony overlooking a sweeping view of the gardens and the pool. The Study is equipped with a large working desk and fax machine and was designed for the busy executive.
The large lounge and dining room, as well as the adjacent kitchen and guest cloakroom. For those wanting total privacy, there is a discrete private entrance to the villa and private parking facilities as well as in suite check in.
Villa Moji
Previously known as Maison de Ville, this stand-alone Villa is ideal for exclusive secure stays for those seeking privacy. Set in a secluded garden with private access and extra security.
A fully serviced residence featuring two en-suite bedrooms opening onto a patio with direct access to the garden and extra length private swimming pool. In addition Villa Moji has a formal lounge, dining room both with working fireplaces and access to the patio. A full kitchen and scullery, study or office and private parking.
Amuse Bouche Restaurant
Dining at Fairlawns is a culinary delight. Amuse-Bouche boasts a sophisticated à la carte menu for the discerning palate, paired with an extensive Wine list. The Amuse-Bouche menu is also available in the privacy of your suite through in-suite dining. Breakfast is served from the restaurant daily.
Manor House Bistro
Manor House Bistro features more casual, al fresco dining, in a contemporary setting that caters to eclectic tastes. This dining room is elegant, yet still homely and welcoming, and features some of your favourite meals.
Tea In The Woods
The Tea in the Woods venue at Fairlawns Boutique Hotel and Spa is inspired by the themes and colours of European tea rooms with a South African twist.
Recently redecorated by our own Michael Kewley, this venue showcases proudly South African brands like Ardmore Design Fabrics used for upholstery and table linen and crockery from renowned designer, Jenna Clifford.
An extraordinary touch has been added in the upholstery of the couch and two chairs with the use of Sabie Forest Delta fabric, a Couture Print on Linen supplied by Exquisite Cuts.
The Tea in the Woods theme is emphasized by specially designed wallpaper featuring a Birchwood forest which also ties in with our gorgeous gardens and rolling lawns visible to guests enjoying their tea journey.
The tranquil sound of water falling in the fountain outside Tea in the Woods adds to a very relaxing atmosphere. The morning and afternoon tea menu is incredible in its own right.
Developed by Executive Chef, Gareth Jordaan and Head Pastry Chef, Christopher Berg, the current menu features a selection of delicate savoury nibbles and sweet sensations that showcase the very best in local produce.
We have collaborated with Terres d’ Afrique to develop the loose-leaf tea menu of thirteen top quality teas from Morocco, Japan, Africa and of course South Africa.
And if you’d prefer to make your afternoon a little more exciting, you can opt for Champagne or South African sparkling wine, which has been carefully chosen to harmonize with most palates. You could also enhance your experience by adding tea cocktails especially designed by a mixologist.
Muse Champagne Room
The latest addition to Fairlawns Boutique Hotel and Spa. Brought to you in collaboration with French Champagne house, Perrier-Jouët, our champagne room and adjoining Courtyard is a sumptuous mix of things elegant and contemporary, using nature as its source of inspiration.

The Protea Boardroom can accommodate up to 14 delegates. The Business Suite is situated in the main hotel building. This 35sqm venue offers complete privacy and accommodates up to 10 delegates with beautiful views of the Fairlawns gardens.
