Built in the nineteenth century in a dazzling neoclassical style in front of the beach and the sea, following the example of the palaces on the Côte d’Azur, the Grand Hotel was to become the favourite residence of refined English tourists when they fell in love with the Riviera di Ponente.

Today, the ancient charm of its beautiful architecture, which has recently undergone a conservative restoration, is combined with high-tech services, the most modern comforts, and contemporary chic interiors that combine minimalist lines and beachy design.

Its privileged position on the beach and just a few steps away from Alassio’s hotspots, the famous “budello” (shopping mile) and the “muretto” (lovers wall), the lenticular panoramic views of the Baia del Sole, the Gallinara island, the Ligurian coast, the charm and exclusive service make the Grand Hotel a reference point for a refined international clientele and the favourite residence of celebrities staying in town.

THE HISTORY
It was built in the 19th century, when the town became a favourite destination for English tourists, attracted by the Mediterranean climate, the abundance of greenery, the beautiful beaches and the picturesque views.

The hotel was one of the most prestigious of its time: following the example of the palaces on the Côte d’Azur, it was built facing the beach in a dazzling neoclassical style. It immediately became the favourite residence of the wealthiest and most refined tourists holidaying on the Riviera di Ponente.

During its glorious history, there have been many famous people stationed here. Among the crowned heads is Duchess Maria Victoria, who stayed here in 1871 on her way to join her husband, the Prince of Savoy, for his election to the royal throne.

And then: the King and Queen of Saxony, the Princess of Saxe-Weimar, the Prince of Battenberg, the Duke and Duchess of Westminster, the Duke of Aosta, Princess Laetitia, the Marchioness Visconti-Venosta, the Marchioness of Villamarina, Princess Demidoff.

One of the Grand Hotel Alassio’s most recent royal guests, Arab Princess Nouf Nint Abdullah al Saud, did not go unnoticed by the press: having arrived, to spend 3 weeks’ holiday in July 2016, accompanied by family members, 30 servants and around 45 trunks, in a procession of cars and minivans with tinted windows.

The hotel has also known a long period of decline, of about 40 years. Believing in its rebirth, the current owners have invested considerable resources to make this prestigious historical structure shine again.

Ten years of work were needed to return the Grand Hotel to its former glory. In 2010, once the restyling had been completed, the ribbon was cut for the hotel to reopen its doors.

The fil rouge with the elegant belle époque holiday atmosphere was maintained, within a skilful reinterpretation oriented towards contemporary décor, in line with the interior design trend of Europe’s most prestigious five-star hotels.

LOCATION
Our hotel is located in a privileged position downtown Alassio, one of the most exclusive resorts on the western Ligurian Riviera. Facing the beach and very close to the town’s most famous tourist spots, such as the Budello and the Muretto, the hotel is easily accessible by all means of transport and is a strategic base from which to explore the Riviera.

ROOMS & SUITES
The suites at the Grand Hotel Alassio are exclusive, spacious rooms where you can spend days and nights of total relaxation, surrounded by beauty. PRESIDENTIAL SUITE
The Grand Hotel Alassio’s largest suite offers 88m2 of space to accommodate large families or groups of friends of up to 7 people. Along with the prestige of the residence and thanks to the three separate rooms, the Presidential Suite gives yout the possibility of enjoying a group holiday in complete privacy.

The large living room area is designed to offer space for convivial moments as well as the magnificent panoramic terrace furnished with table and chairs, sun loungers and parasol.

The view sweeps over the entire seafront that leads from Alassio to the magnificent village of Laigueglia. The interior is furnished in a contemporary, linear and minimalist style, while the colours of the fabrics, brown and blue, reflect the colours of the surrounding landscape.

The Gazebo Restaurant is characterised by a dry, linear design. The colours are neutral and the objects that adorn the table are minimal, so as not to overload the age-old dialogue between the table and the sea.

Chef Roberto Balgisi’s refined gourmet menus and dishes are based on an ever-evolving creative cuisine, perfectly balanced between refinement and simplicity, exaltation of taste and freshness of ingredients. By now a reference point not to be missed.

The sea is the master around and within the dish, so among the highlights of the Gazebo Restaurant stand out: Ligurian purple prawns in Kataifi nest with smooth mustard fruit salad, Paccheri combined with trumpets zucchini, yuzu and dried Mullet’s fish Bottarga, red chilli pepper and burrata, green crusted rack of lamb with fingerling potatoes and apricots ketchup, blue lobster served with mango, osmotic greens and Balsamico black drops. Last but not least: an excellent wine cellar.

18.97 BISTROT
The 18.97 Bistrot Contemporaneo & Pizzeria Napoletana is the Grand Hotel Alassio’s most family-friendly restaurant, dedicated to those who want a quick break during a day at sea or a more informal lunch or dinner, without giving up the exquisite flavours of Ligurian cuisine. At lunchtime you can enjoy fresh dishes, large salads, lots of vegetables, tasty sandwiches and nice snacks.

Or the real Neapolitan Pizza, leavened for 48 hours and made with traditional ingredients, to be enjoyed under the beach umbrella at lunch or, for dinner, accompanied by a delicious craft beer, a specially created cocktail or the most exclusive Italian and transalpine bubbles.

At dinner, the menus are simple and tasty, with the best traditional local dishes, the classics of Italian cuisine and fun incursions into the Ligurian Sea such as the famous “Paccheri del Pescatore”, a dive into the Gulf of Alassio proposed by Executive Chef Roberto Balgisi.

The assigned areas are shaded by pretty domed umbrellas and equipped with comfortable sun loungers and Hollywood-style chairs. The fine grain of the beach, the transparency of the sea and the very shallow seabed make the beach the ideal place for young swimmers to play safely in water games and build sandcastles.

The hotel offers its guests free canoes and paddle surfing, to make their days at the beach even more exciting. Thanks to our beach bar service, you can sip cocktails, refreshing drinks or an energetic coffee, comfortably lying under your beach umbrella.

SPORT
Combining a beach holiday with sport is one of the privileges of staying at the Grand Hotel Alassio. A wide choice of activities to satisfy fans of various sports and disciplines.

TENNIS
Alassio is home to one of Italy’s historic tennis clubs. The Hanbury Tennis Club Alassio was founded in 1923. It has 7 clay courts, set in a 12,000 m² secular park. Tournaments and events at international level are regularly held here.

GOLF CLUB GARLENDA
Surrounded by a green belt of ancient olive groves and pine forests, it is located in the Lerrone valley, one of the most evocative and picturesque of the Ligurian hinterland. The 18 holes of the course, opened in 1965, were designed by architects Morrison and Harris and blend harmoniously into the landscape without altering its environmental characteristics.

From a technical point of view, the course, which has a length of 6085 metres and a par of 72, is, from the championship tees, a difficult test for the most talented players and a pleasant challenge for golfers with a higher handicap from the normal starts. The view from the highest holes is formidable: the gaze embraces a scene that goes from the sea to the Maritime Alps.

DIVING & SAILING
The marina, close to the hotel, is the reference point for maritime sports activities. The harbour is located right in front of Gallinara Island, one of the most interesting areas for diving. At the diving centres in the port of Alassio, it is possible to book both individual and group dives.

For sailing enthusiasts there is the Circolo Nautico “Al Mare”, which every summer organises sailing courses for all ages, diving courses, international regattas and exciting sporting events: swimming competitions and French water walking.

ALASSIO
Alassio enjoys a privileged geographical position on the coast of the Western Coast, called Riviera di Ponente. It stretches gently into the inlet between Capo Mele and Punta Murena. But its ancient foundation – between the 10th and 11th centuries – also render it a place with a strong historical imprint.

Its centre retains the exquisite beauty of Ligurian maritime villages, with a layout shaped to defend itself against attacks from the sea and pirates. The historic centre is a maze of narrow streets and alleyways that branch out around a narrow carruggio, a long main street.

Its name is “Budello”, and it is the only one in the whole of Liguria to be so called. The Budello of Alassio, which connects Borgo Coscia to Barusso, runs parallel to the sea and offers sudden glimpses that always leave the visitor spellbound.

The Budello has been the beating heart of the town for centuries till today, squeezed between elegant historical buildings, it is a refined shopping street: many boutiques, shops, but also bars and pastry shops where you can taste the so called Baci di Alassio, the typical sweet chocolate kisses.

It is no coincidence that they are called baci, because Alassio is the city of lovers. The theme of love can also be found in numerous works of art that decorate one of the city’s symbolic places, the Muretto (Wall of Love).

In the 1950s, the night owls of Alassio’s dolce vita used to meet here. This is where youthful flirtations took place, where everyone left their mark, their signature.

Today, the Muretto is a colourful monument full of signatures of famous people – Ernest Hemingway is one of them – and of works of art such as the ceramic reproduction of the romantic Les amoureux by Raymond Peynet, the bronze statue of the Innamorati by Eros Pellini, the steel storks by Umberto Mastroianni, and the Pesciolini by Maestro Berrino, which have become one of the symbols of the town.

A destination for the international jet set in the 1950s and 1960s, an exclusive holiday resort in the 19th century, Alassio also boasts a glorious history in the field of seaside tourism on the Riviera dei Fiori.

The works, which you will find exhibited in communal spaces as well as in your rooms, explore multiple themes, from the advertising of the 20s, to rock music and pop icons.

Your imagination will be captured by these works of art, from Ruben & Eva’s handcrafted clay donuts topped with pastel colored glaze and finished with the famous Louis Vuitton logo, to Jonathan Griffith’s Chupa Chups decorated with renowned luxury brands, and John Petschinger’s iconic Campbell Sauce, with its unmissable gold leaf dusting.

Let yourself be challenged and inspired by Josh Mahaby’s representation of the famous video game character, with the unforgettable red hat, in his work Super Fashion Mario, and by Stefano Porcini’s Daft Punk, which fuses modern technologies with traditional craftsmanship.

Amanda Toy’s Pink Guernica, which reinterprets a Picasso masterpiece in a vibrant, eye-catching style, and Rian Betina’s big donuts, with their soft, shocking pink, are both sure to move you.

Continuing along the hall, towards the beach, you will be enchanted by Paolo De Cuarto’s contemporary artworks, which interpret the modern world through a decadent, poetic perspective and depict romantic, sensual and mysterious female figures.

Or, even the Italian artist Tommy Goodman with his unique and contemporary style which instantly captures the eye and reverence of the viewer. His artworks pay homage to strong men, emperors, astronauts and fictional characters.

It would be impossible not to notice the magnificent Liberty and Art Déco advertisements, which showcase, with great romanticism, the evolution of the medium in Italy, over the last seventy years.

Moreover, passing in front of the Grand Boutique you will find the numerical concept of Stefano Lubatti made on jute canvas and enriched with beautiful acrylic colors and metal wires.

Finally, the sand-based sculptures and paintings by the Piedmontese maestro Elio Garis will take you on an memorable journey into the exclusive world of Italian design and artistry. In fact, the celebrated sculptor has come to Alassio after countless travels, drawing artistic inspiration from every corner of the world.

We leave you the freedom to interpret these beautiful works of art, which will accompany us throughout the summer here at the Grand Hotel.

This exhibition of artwork in our prestigious spaces, has been organized in collaboration with: Daniele Comelli, whose Online Gallery proposed a range of works by young and talented international artists; Matteo Bellenghi Modern and Contemporary Art, which led us to discover contemporary artist Paolo de Cuarto – “l’artista del muro vintage sulla tela”; and with Alessandro Bellenda’s Galleria d’Arte L’Image in Alassio, with its rich collection of advertisements.

The important collaboration with the Piedmontese maestro Elio Garis, with his insatiable desire to harmoniously combine diverse and uncommon materials, such as stained glass, plaster, sand, and many others, has allowed us to display his impressive multi-media sculptures.

Finally, the collaboration with the contemporary artist Stefano Lubatti and Tommy Goodman that with his pieces inspire the viewer to strive for such greatness and strength as his protagonists.
