Located at the foothills of Volcano of Colima, in the picturesque highlands of Mexico is the captivating Hacienda de San Antonio. It is a place blessed with eternal spring, with exuberant and extraordinary gardens unfolding into immense vegetation and the hacienda’s own Rancho Jabalí, from where most of the produce served on property is sourced.

With just 25 individually designed suites, this is an exclusive destination offering the highest levels of personalized service and a range of outdoor activities immersing guests into the unspoilt nature surrounding the property.

The story of this highland paradise dates back to 1879, once the center of a coffee plantation so revered it was served in the New York Waldorf Astoria, and drank by the German Imperial family.

Over time the property passed through various ownership, withstood wars, and outlasted volcanic eruptions all to eventually be acquired by Sir James Goldsmith, it is now a sprawling boutique hotel thriving under continued family ownership.

The doors of Hacienda de San Antonio stand open for guests to experience a melding of remarkable authenticity, luxury, eco-conscientious practices and the highest level of service.

ACCOMMODATION
Thoughtfully decorated by Alix Marcaccini, in collaboration with Armand Aubery, Hacienda de San Antonio’s 22 Suites and 3 Grand Suites echo the design and traditions of a large Mexican home.

Hand-made wool carpets from Oaxaca, European textiles and art pieces personally collected by the family, give each room a distinctive character. The high ceilings and large French windows invite the outside in, and overstuffed sofas and wood-burning fireplaces create a welcoming retreat for the cooler mountain evenings.

SUITES
The 22 Suites, with either Garden, Volcano or River views, are warmed by the bright colours and textiles of Mexican design. Spread between the ground and second floors, each Suite opens to a volcanic stone terrace or step out balconies, from which to take in the all-natural surrounds and fresh mountain air. All Suites can be configured as a king or twin for your comfort.

RIVER VIEW SUITE
Ranging from 540-640 sq ft in size, the four River View Suites are split between the ground and second floor, each offering spectacular views over the river valley.

French windows open to volcanic stone terraces on the ground floor, and step-out balconies on the second, from which to relax and take in the spectacular natural surroundings. On cooler evenings, retreat to the open plan bedroom and living area and request your wood-burning stove to be lit.

VOLCANO VIEW SUITE
The faces of the Volcano of Colima morph throughout the day as the sun moves across the sky, glowing red with the sunset on clear evenings.

All 8 Volcano View Suites offer spectacular views, with the Hacienda’s ancient aqueduct in the foreground. Six suites are located on the ground floor with direct access to the peaceful back garden, and two are located on the second floor with step out balconies.

GRAND SUITES
Located on the second floor of the Hacienda, the three Grand Suites each offer ample space, light and spectacular views, whilst taking on individual personalities through Portuguese inspired tiling, Mexican pottery and internationally influenced textiles.

The supremely spacious Grand Suites each have a separate living and entertaining space, from which guests can enjoy relaxed evenings by the open fire.

GRAND SUITE EL VOLCAN
A corner position on the second floor of the Hacienda affords the El Volcan Grand Suite unrivalled views of the Volcano of Colima and the breath-taking natural landscape surrounding the Hacienda.

The corner position means the Grand Suite is filled with light throughout the day, to be enjoyed from the spacious bedroom or separate living area. Open the French windows to the four step out balconies to witness the daily spectacle of the volcano absorbing the glow of the sun at dusk.

DINING
Dining is offered in a variety of settings and always exquisitely presented throughout the hotel or in your suite. Every morning the dining terrace is set where organic breakfast, fresh juices made to order, and coffee grown and roasted on Rancho Jabalí await.

One of the outstanding features of our dining experience is that a wide range of organically grown fruits, vegetables, cheeses and meats are provided by our own gardens and ranch.

Enjoy incredible picnics on Rancho Jabali or in the gardens around the hotel. Guests staying in the hotel can request special set ups, at an additional cost, if they prefer a more private setting or simply a change of scenery for any meal in particular.

LIVING
The Hacienda’s richly detailed rooms provide a vibrant backdrop to life at the Hacienda. The Yellow Bar, with its views to the garden, is the social hub for evening cocktails and lively conversation. The wood beamed library is a quiet retreat while the light filled Mirador room is ideal for reading or a movie.

The 110’ alberca of the Hacienda is perfect for morning laps, or an afternoon plunge before enjoying lunch in the alberca dining pavilion. Once a store room for the coffee produced on the plantation, the imposing Club Room with its volcanic stone columns and massive wood beamed roof is a place for dining, gathering or special events.

Plenty more vibrance and interesting details await just outside the rooms of the hacienda, in the formal gardens encompassing the entire house. In the evening guests reconnect at the bar and enjoy a game of pool in the adjoined billiard room.

RECREATION
Activities abound in our mild mountain climate, providing an array of unforgettable experiences for all paces and ages. In the gardens enjoy bird watching with an expert guide, schedule a game of tennis with a local pro or take a stroll on the walking/jogging trail loop.

On Rancho Jabalí, horseback riding, mountain biking and quad tours all provide a more fast paced means of connection and exploration throughout thousands of breathtaking acres of nature.

Yoga and meditation can be scheduled with a local instructor, for those seeking a more tranquil connection, select your desired space from the plethora of options both the hotel and ranch provide.

Picnics can be arranged nearly anywhere anytime, the most surreal of which take place on ‘the deck’ and at the iconic Epazote, where ancient trees provide shade while guests take in views of the lagoon and el Volcán de Fuego provides the most stunning backdrop.

For the most daring, skydiving jumps and hot air balloon rides provide once in a lifetime aerial tours of our Mexico highlands sanctuary. If guests still find themselves looking for more they can head out for an afternoon to explore the neighbouring historical pueblo, Comala.

A privately guided tour will take you to the standout landmarks and most authentic and delicious experiences. Children will also find plenty to do and see throughout the gardens, the game room/library, a well stocked movie library available for enjoyment in the TV room, and baking classes certainly never disappoint.

RANCHO JABALÍ
Over 5,000 acres of stunning mountain landscape energized by the towering Volcán de Fuego – where wild horses roam, livestock thrives, crops flourish and a vast network of lagoons hide amongst jutting hilltops fringed by fields and forest.

One of the main practices used on the ranch is Biodynamic farming, from which hundreds of acres have transformed into thriving organic gardens, yielding our healthiest and most lush produce to date. 90% of all ingredients used in our à la carte menu are sourced from the ranch. The utmost respect and care we put into our produce and our environment is reflected in every meal

The Hacienda de San Antonio along with its working Ranch “El Jabali” carry out various practices and are involved in local initiatives to protect the environment. The operation overall supports local communities encouraging and innovating sustainable practices via organic agriculture, horticulture, orchards and coffee plantations.

Daily tours of the ranch and its many process can be scheduled, where guests will see cheese making, our artisanal coffee roasting operation and where we produce our own essential oils, followed by a sampling of the freshest and purest products Rancho Jabalí provides.

Rancho Jabalí is protected by the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) a decentralized administrative body of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources. The main task of PROFEPA is to increase the levels of observance of environmental regulations, in order to contribute to sustainable development and enforce environmental laws.

PROFEPA is an institution that works with society, in which its members are environmental guarantors and where a true environmental culture based on prevention is built
