THE PALATINE HILL
According to the mythology, the home om Romulus who founded Rome (after killing his brother Remus) in 753 BC (approx.). The Palatine hill was a perfect place to stay since it was easily defended and was near the river Tiber.

Later the Palatine hill was a popular place in the Ancient Rome among the wealthy and powerful elite. The imperial palace was placed here and at that time it was close to The Roman Forum on one side and the Circus Maximus on the other.

Many emperors lived at the Palatine Hill; Augustus, Caligula, Domitian, Nero, Septimius Severus and Tiberius. Catullus and Cicero is other examples of famous Romans who also had their home at the hill.

SANT’ISIDORE’S COLLEGE
In the front of the Hotel there is a 17th century Franciscan monastic complex.Its church building is the Irish national church in Rome. It contains the Cappella Da Sylva, designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini who also designed the funerary monument of his son Paolo Valentino Bernini in it.

There is a Mass in English on Sundays at 10:00, which is the only public Mass in the week and, apparently, the only time you can visit the church without an appointment.

If you wish to see the artworks before Mass, try arriving half an hour early and be discreet -the church is small, and it is easy to cause a disturbance. The friars will also conduct weddings for Irish couples.

ST. PETERS BASILICA
The Basilica is the greatest catholic church and is one of many great attractions in Rome. It got its name from the apostle Peter who died in 64 AD. St. Peter’s Basilica was build much later. The project started 1506 and was finished in 1625.

The church is an imposing construction with a total height of almost 190 meters. Inside you find different sculptures and paintings from many well-known artists where Michelangelo is the most famous.

COLOSSEUM
The Grand opening of the arena took place at 80 AD by Caesar Titus. The name came from the giant (colossal) statue of Nero that stood beside the place of the arena (the statue is no longer there). At the Colosseum thousands of gladiators and animal was killed during the years it was used.

Only at the opening ceremony that took a year, it is believed that 2 000 gladiators and 9 000 animals was “slaughtered”. The perimeter of the Colosseum is about 524 meters and it is 48-meter-high and could take 55 000 spectators. Colosseum is one of the places you must visit when you are in Rome.

THE ROMAN FORUM
The Latin name is Forum Romanum and in the ancient Rome it was the center for trade, politics and religion. Here the senate met to discuss and to decide about important matters that affected the life of all Romans but in the Roman forum you also got markets where you could by everything from locally produced wine, corn and grains to more exotic, imported things.

In the area you find many temples where you could worship the different gods. The Roman forum was also a place to meet and gossip to hear the latest news. Today you can see the ruins of many of the buildings that once stood here. Some of them is better preserved, some have been restored and some of the is almost completely gone.

PANTHEON
Is an impressive building and was built by Agrippa between 27-25 BC and at that time it was a pagan temple for praying to all the gods that the roman people worshiped at that time. The temple was destroyed but was rebuilt again between 120-125 AD by Caesar Harianus.

The new temple is believed to be a good replica of the original. In the 600s AD Pantheon was sacred to Saint Maria and the martyrs and since then it has been used as a catholic church.

CASTLE OF THE HOLY ANGEL 
It’s called Castello St. Angelo but from the beginning it wasn’t a castle. It was a tomb, the mausoleum of the emperor Hadrian. It was built between 130 – 139 AD. After him more emperors was buried here, the last one was Caracalla 217.

Unfortunately, most of the mausoleum was destroyed when it was converted to a fortress 401 AD and the urns with the ashes of the emperors was scattered in 410 when the fortress was plundered. In the 14th century the fortress begins to change to a castle.

MONUMENT OF VICTOR EMANUEL II
In italian, Vittorio Emanuele II was the king of Sardinia from 1849 to 1861 when he become the King of Italy when it finally was united. He was the King of Italy until he died in 1878.

Victor Emanuel played i minor role in the success of the unification but since he was the first king he got very popular among the people and it was decided to honors him with a monument. In 1885 the building project started and it finally was finished 1911 (the same year as the 50-year celebration of the unity).

Guiseppe Sacconi was the architect of the magnificent monument. Not everyone likes the monument, many find it exaggerated. Typewriter and wedding cake is two nicknames for it and usually called Piazza Venezia.

PIAZZA NAVONA
In antiquity Piazza Navona was used as an arena where they compete with tanks pulled by horses. Nowadays is a big square used as a marketplace. Here you find artists and paintings, clothes, food and much more. On the square you also find restaurants and trattorias where you can have something to eat or drink.

BOCCA DELLA VERITA’
In English ‘Mouth of Truth’, is a big ancient slab of marble with a diameter of 1.75 meter. It is a sculpted mask carved out of the Pavonazzetto marble and the legend says that the one who dares to put their hand in the mouth will have it bitten off if they have committed perjury.

The sculpture weighs about 1200 kg and the aged is believed to be about 2 200 years. It is believed to represent a god but which one of the is uncertain. It could be Oceanus or the River god of Tiber and some thinks it is Mercurius, the God in Rome who protected thieves and merchants. You find the mask at the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome.

THE BATHS OF CARACALLA
Is one the most well-known bathhouses in Rome. It was the second largest of the public baths in Rome. Although most parts of the huge buildings have collapsed, it is still worth visiting if you want to get a sense of how it could have been visiting them in the ancient Rome. It is impressive.

The baths of Caracalla (or Terme di Caracalla in Italian) was built between sometimes 211-217 AD by the Roman emperor called Caralla (his real name was Marcus Aurelius Severus Antoninus Augustus).

The baths were used until the 6th century when the it was partly destroyed in the Gothic war. The bathhouse was large 412 x 393 meters and approx. 45 meters high. The bath consisted of many different sections and rooms with different kind of bathrooms from cold ones to really hot ones.

Beside bathing you could also practiceboxing or wrestling. There were also two libraries (one for Greek, and one for Latin language), different kind of smaller shops also places to sit down and relax.

THE CATACOMBS OF SAN CALLISTO 
Is one of the more less known attractions in Rome. It is located along with the Appian Way. The oldest part of the Catacombs of San Callisto was built sometimes around 150 AD and was named after Saint Callixtus (the Catacombs are also called Catacombs of Callixtus). It is most known for the Crypt of Popes that contains tombs from different popes from between the 2nd and 4th century.
