Almost two hundred years have passed after the conversion from a Franciscan monastery grounded in the thirteenth century by St Francis of Assisi first into an inn and after that into a Historical hotel designated “Hotel Luna Convento” which has been continuously managed by five generations of the Barbaro family.

In this place, in the ancient cloister, there are also two artistic panels created by Angelo Tajani when it comes to the historical research and his brother Claudio for the graphics and photographs, illustrating the path of tourism since the time of travel of the “Grand Tour” to this day.

The panels show the origin of visitors from all five continents through a selection of autographs, appraisals, poems and images extracted from the “Golden Books” of the guests of the hotel.

Travelers, among which stands out international personalities of the clergy, culture, art, politics and of the aristocracy, were drawn to these places by the beauty of the coast, from the history of the ancient Maritime Republic and from the remains of the apostle Andrew buried in the crypt of the Cathedral.

It is one of the oldest cloisters in the Amalfi area, a spectacular example of Moorish architecture that leaves you amazed by the evocative mystic atmosphere that reigns after almost 800 years since its foundation in 1222, by Saint Francis of Assisi.

THE POOL
The sea water swimming pool, the solarium and the private access to the sea will become ideal places to enjoy moments of pure relaxation, lulled by the sound of the waves and kissed by the warm rays of the sun. The pool is accessible through a series of steps (about 80) leading to the picturesque cliff overlooking the sea.

THE MOON GARDEN
The convent of S. Maria degli Angeli, then of S. Francesco, founded, according to tradition, in 1220 by the saint of Assisi, which later became Auberge de la Lune or Albergo Luna, had gardens and cultivated terraces in its vicinity. First of all, a walnut tree, a characteristic plant of the Franciscans, was planted in the garden that still flanks the convent structure.

The nearby terraces date back to the Middle Ages and consist of macerine , built with dry stone walls, partially restored with the application of masonry in the Bourbon age.

In medieval documents they are referred to as horti, each consisting of several cultivated terraces ( petie ); these were even planted in narrow and narrow spaces clinging to the sloping rock of Monte Aureo: in this case they were defined as viterine .

These gardens were equipped with vineyards connected directly, according to a medieval tradition widespread in the South, to the olive groves. Gradually, starting from the 19th century, the vineyards were replaced by lemon groves, which were certainly more profitable.

The vineyards of that place consisted of plants for the production of wine and others for fruit (table grapes). There was no shortage of apricot trees ( gresommole ), as well as figs, plums and hazelnuts.

The lower part of the gardens was reserved for lettuce ( folea ), onions and pumpkins ( cocorbete ). All this is attested by notarial sources relating to a time interval that goes from the XIII to the XIX century.
