Villa Agape dates back to Mediaeval times, when it was built as a simple country home. In 1469 the property belonged to Bartolomeo di Matteo who in 1472 bequeathed it to the nuns of San Paolo di Pinti.

In 1547 it changed hands, going to Jacopo di Raffaello del Nente and successively to Giuliano di Filippo Arrighetti in 1602. From then on, the Villa was known as Villa Arrighetti. However, Villa Arrighetti owes its final structure and its present-day splendour to Duchess Anna D’Orléans, widow of Amedeo Duca d’Aosta, who purchased it in 1948 from Ms.

Royle Cladyf, daughter of George Macleam, and who adorned it with gardens, statues and fountains. In 1968, Duchess Anna D’Orléans turned the Villa into the home of the Suore Stabilite nella Carità (Sisters of Charity), creating a structure dedicated to works of cultural and spiritual hospitality.

The Sisters changed the Villa’s name to Villa Agape, from the Greek word for “banquet” or “repast”. The Sisters were there up until 2014, and from 2015, under new management and following the extensive renovation of all its interiors, Villa Agape has become a wonderful hotel on the Florentine hills.

Villa Agape, previously Villa Arrighetti, owned by the Duchess of Aosta, is in the beautiful setting of Piazzale Michelangelo, not far from the panoramic position of Florence’s Arcetri Observatory.

With its fine position, Villa Agape offers its guests splendid rooms with views over the city of Florence and the private park with Italian-style garden, the only one of its kind in the city.

In fact, in addition to the richly-decorated rooms and spacious reception halls, the Villa has green areas that enhance the property, unique corners with a wealth of flowers and fountains where you can spend unforgettable moments.

THE PARK
Commissioned by the Duchess of Aosta, the front of the Villa is dominated by the large Italian-style garden, adorned with rare plants and flowers. In pure Renaissance shape and style, composed using box borders and decorated with fountains, it provides a link to the Hotel’s incredible private park, the only one of its kind in Florence.

This green area, with abundant fruit trees, olive groves, a century-old wisteria and other ancient trees, begins from the top of the hill dominated by Villa Agape, and it ends further down at Viale Galileo, Florence’s most panoramic street.

From there, walking for about another ten minutes, you reach Basilica di San Miniato al Monte and Piazzale Michelangelo, unmissable sights during your stay in Florence.
