THE HISTORY
While Zochova Chata (Zoch’s Cottage) first welcomed guests in 1933, this unique place actually has a much longer history. Modra was already a key Hungarian royal town at the beginning of the 17th century, with the cottage acting as a refuge for the healing and regeneration of body and spirit.

We highly value the notable tradition, prominent past, and irresistible charm of the Piesok area – qualities reflected in the building’s extensive reconstruction in 2007. Enjoy the history around you, which our guests continue to write today.

We composed the menu for the hotel restaurant with respect to the uniqueness of this locality. Therefore we combined traditional Slovak cuisine with the Little Carpathian Wine Region specialities.

We like quality meat and when preparing steaks, we use various side dishes and herbs, which we grow near the hotel. When possible, we like to use local ingredients and products from our own smokehouse. We wish you a pleasant gastronomic experience.

THE RESTAURANT
Restaurant Zochova chata is situated in the log section of the hotel. On entering the hotel, you will be enchanted by the dignified style and high standards, from the place setting to the waiting service.

The excellent gastronomic team headed by the Executive Chef is prepared to satisfy even the most demanding guests. Menu is prepared with respect to the unique characteristics of the location, it is dominated by specialities of the Small Carpathian domestic vineyard kitchen, local products and seasonal specialties.

FURMANSKA KRCMA
As a part of hotel complex there is a stylish wooden inn called Furmanská krčma (Olster´s inn) with its fabulous atmosphere of fairytale chalet. During the winter you can warm up by the furnace, during the summer you can enjoy the shade on the terrace under the lops of old beeches.

Cheerfull moments with the genuine contact of Slovak country can enjoy not only foreigners but also families with children. Menu is composed of traditional Slovak cuisine. It is ideal place for private meeting, family party, wine degustation, corporate event or foreigner´s visit.

A 15 x 4 m pool provides for sufficient room for recreational swimming. Afterwards, you can try the relaxing power of water during a water jet massage. We recommend for you to further relax sitting in our 16 m2 whirlpool bath.

You can intensify the blissful feeling by drinking cooled Champagne with strawberries or by backlighting water in your favourite colour. And if you still don´t have enough, you can rent the Wellness & Spa centre for night relaxation in the moonlight.

MODRA’S HISTORY 
The first evidence of the town’s settlement date to the 3rd millennium BC, while the first written records date to the 12th and 13th centuries. When Rudolf II granted Modra the privileges of a free royal town (libera regiae civitas) in 1607, this charming place became a leading Hungarian royal town.

From 1610 to 1646 the town fortified itself with three sturdy gates, parts of which – the fortifications and Upper Gate – still remaining as a relic of an illustrious past. By the 17th century, Modra had become a notable town with developed viticulture, forestry practises, guild production, education, and culture.

PIESOK
Although known as Piesok (sand), it’s a pleasant surprise to find that the area is so much more than just that grainy substance and dust. As a tranquil oasis surrounded by Modra forests, Piesok has long been renowned as the perfect retreat from hustle and bustle.

This attractive location with refreshing vibrant air was discovered by Modra’s poetically-minded residents earlier than Harmónia. Piesok’s charmingly secluded Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene (1876) has a notable namesake altar, and this saint and St. Vincent are patrons of this settlement.

This location’s first villa for healing and recreation dates to 1890 and was quickly followed by others, culminating in the restoration of Zochova Chata in the protected Small Carpathians hilly landscape area.

This attractive cottage was enjoyed for tourism, recreation, sport, and protecting the surrounding nature. Renowned far and wide, Zochova Chata attracted visitors from the nearby cities Bratislava, Budapest, and Vienna, international tourists, and even US Presidents – with Jimmy Carter paying a visit too.

SAMUEL ZOCH
(December 18, 1882 – January 4, 1928) – Slovak evangelical priest, public figure, politician, church dignitary, and religious writer. After graduating in Vienna, this native of Modra first became a chaplain in Novi Sad before being elected pastor of Modra in 1907, where he replaced his uncle Pavel Zoch.

Samuel Zoch was involved in several key events that laid the foundations of the Slovak nation, founded the Modra Hiking Group, and authored the Martin Declaration. Zochova Chata was the first trekking cottage in the Small Carpathians, yet Zoch was not to see its ribbon cutting – his widow Maria instead attended the ceremonial opening.

However, Samuel Zoch had often enjoying walking with friends – including Slovak Matica’s Štefan Krčméry, and poet, pastor and politician Martin Rázus – in the beautiful area around the contemporary Hotel Zochova Chata.

MODRA MAJOLICA
Cottage industry for earthenware produce (Továreň na výrobu hlineného riadu a.s.) – Modra clergymen Jurkovič and Zoch set about restoring the former Mička workshop to keep the attractive and traditional earthenware craft alive. Their modest endeavour soon flourished into a full-fledged company when the two visionaries saw the business’s viability and the products’ popularity.

Their cottage industry became operational in autumn 1911, after which time Modra ceramic products were showcased at prestigious exhibitions in Budapest, Vienna, Brno, and Cologne – meeting with acclaim and selling well.

Especially popular were the traditional ceramic folklore shapes and colours – and naturally so, since Modra’s craftwork is globally unique for this style of decorative tableware. This local production of clay dishes holds an important place not only in Modra, but in the cultural heart of the whole country.

Nothing can enhance your concentration and performance better than outdoor activities. Our grassy area of more than 1200 m2 can be used to play football, volleyball, croquet, or for an elegant social event in a big tent. You can enjoy a smaller event in the gazebo with live music in the heart of nature in the Little Carpathians.

ADVENTURE GOLF
Adventure Golf came to us from North America, where it remains a favourite recreational and professional sport. It’s essentially like ordinary golf, but set in a smaller area. Adventure Golf is played on an artificial grass putting surface with putters or mini golf clubs and a golf ball.

PETANQUE
Pétanque is a very simple game that originates in France. But you won’t have to travel far to give this game a try. Just stop by at Zochova Chata! Players are divided into 1-3 teams. First, one player throws a small wooden ball onto the playing board. Next, the players distribute the steel balls evenly and throw them one by one. The object of the game is simple: the one whose steel ball gets the closest to the wooden one wins.

OUTDOOR CHESS 
Chess is a two-player strategy game in which the outcome is determined by the tactical and strategic abilities of the players and their ability to pay attention and concentrate. The object of the game is to checkmate your opponent. It is, in its own way, an art form, science and sport. Chess develops logical thinking skills and helps boost your memory.

OUTDOOR SPORTS
The large grassy area can be used for football, volleyball or badminton; we can also lend you the necessary sports equipment. Fans of less traditional sports will surely be pleased with the possibilities of rock-climbing and croquet.

ACTIVE REST IN WINTER
When the windows are covered with frost and the thermometer shows a minus all day long, it is the ideal time to visit the nearby Pezinská Baba and enjoy some winter sports like skiing and snowboarding. Or in the case of bad weather, you can choose to play table tennis in the gym of the Hotel.

Beginners and children can also take advantage of the ski slopes just next to the Hotel, open during the winter season from 9 am till 4 pm. There are two pistes, each 300m long, which can also be covered with artificial snow and are regularly groomed by a snowcat.For more advanced skiers and snowboarders we would recommend the nearby ski resort of Pezinská Baba.

ROCK CLIMBING
In the surroundings of Zochova chata, there are 11 rock formations attractive for rock-climbing in an area of approximately 25 km2. These rocks are mostly composed of quartzite of various colours and quality. The most popular locality is called Čertove zuby (the Devil´s Teeth).

The rocks here reach a height of 25 m and their level of difficulty ranges between II to VIII. We can provide you with the necessary equipment and a guide. Beginners can also try the artificial climbing walls in Modra or Chalet Kukla.

LITTLE CARPATHIAN WINE ROUTE
Small Carpathian Wine Route combines several phenomena – wine, landscape, history and gastronomy in the area located between Bratislava and Trnava. Between them lie three smaller cities – Pezinok, Modra, and Svaty Jur, which have been recognized for centuries for quality wine production.

Among the most important events in this region belong: Day of open cellars in mid-November and Open Cellars in May at St. Hurban´s day, when visitors have the opportunity to visit more than 100 cellars and enjoy the wine directly from the barrels. Hotel Zochova chata is located directly in the center of the action, just a stone’s throw from the wine cellars.

TOURISM & CYCLING
You do not need to go too far to reach an extensive network of tourist paths or popular local monuments. Discover the environment full of stories. Hotel Zochova chata is located close to Austria, the Czech Republic as well as Hungary, at the foot of the Little Carpathians. Not far from Bratislava and in a region with a rich winemaking history ‒ you will find agreeable locations for walks as well as more demanding hikes and cycling trips here.

LOOKOUT TOWER HOMOLA 
Those, who prefer easy trips in the peaceful countryside, will certainly be attracted by the Comenius University observatory, which also serves as a scientific and research centre. It is only slightly more than 1 km away. If you are not looking for demanding physical activities, but comfortable and easy-going options, you can also visit the lookout tower on Veľká Homoľa hill, which is only 2km away.

RED STONE CASTLE 
The first stone construction was built here in the 13th century. It was part of a chain of border castles, which stretched between Bratislava and Žilina. Walking at your own pace, the hike can take you around 5 hours.

For cycling you can follow the itinerary Hotel Zochova chata – Tri kopce – Kukla – Píla – Červený Kameň – Píla – Papiernička – Vyvieračka – Komárka – Hotel Zochova chata. It is less than 12 km long and its duration depends solely on you.

PLAVECKY CASTLE
Above the nearby village of Plavecké Podhradie, on a hill called Pohanská, is the ruin of Plavecký Castle. It was constructed on the western slopes of the Little Carpathians in the 13th century and nowadays it can be accessed for free. It is situated slightly more than 30 km from the hotel, which makes it a perfect destination for ambitious cyclists. Or go by car to Plavecké Podhradie and from there it is just a short walking distance.

OSTRY KAMEN CASTLE 
The ruin of Ostrý kameň Castle looms on the spur of the highest peak of the Little Carpathians, Záruby. A pleasant, but at the same time demanding cycling trip there and back is approximately 70 km long. The freely accessible gothic castle used to have an important role in the defence of the “Czech Route”, which served for the merchants from the east to reach Moravia and Bohemia.
