EXPERIENCES
Bordering Sri Lanka’s famed reserve of Yala National Park, Jetwing Safari Camp is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. The abundance of exotic flora and fauna within the sanctuary is a treat that can be enjoyed as you wish on a series of full or half-day safaris.

For birding enthusiasts, a number of dedicated trails in our immediate region offer a specialised wildlife experience. The surrounding region is also one that is rich in history and culture, home to the ancient temples of Kataragama and Sithulpawwa – both significant in their own right.

While the latter serves as an ancient Buddhist monastery dating back to the 2nd century BC, Kataragama has been a revered town for pilgrims of multiple faiths for centuries.

In addition to the natural and historical wonders that abound the area, the immediate beachfront of Jetwing Safari Camp is a stretch of unspoilt, private golden sand to laze your evenings away with spectacular, amethyst-soaked sunsets to awe you.

YALA NATIONAL PARK
Yala National Park is the second largest nature reserve in Sri Lanka, and without a doubt the most famous. With a history of over 100 years, this famed sanctuary is the world’s best place to spot the elusive leopard, majestic Sri Lankan elephant, and sloth bear – all in their natural habitat within a single reserve.

In addition to having one of the highest concentrations of leopards in the world, Yala National Park is home to over 40 other mammals and over 200 species of birds.

The entrance to Yala block I, the most popular block of the five blocks, is within a 10-minute drive of Jetwing Safari Camp while the park’s other, relatively quieter blocks can be accessed within an hour’s drive.

BIRDING TRAILS
Although Jetwing Safari Camp borders one of our island’s most popular national parks at Yala, the deep south of Sri Lanka is also a haven for several species of birds.

From our coastal grounds, we offer several exciting birding trails for the ornithologist in you. Each offers different ecosystems and habitats, resulting in varied bird species.

While some trails start from the private deck of your tent itself, others will take you to the heart of national parks. Whichever you choose, make sure to bring along your field guides and binoculars – something exciting is bound to cross your sights.

BUNDALA NATIONAL PARK
Bundala National Park, on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, is among the best destinations in the island for wading and coastal birds, but forest species are also found in their hundreds in this national park.

The national park is situated just forty minutes from Jetwing Safari Camp and the drive takes you through scenic paddy fields and lush marshlands which are abound with wildlife as well.

If you are lucky, you may even score an encounter with one of the rarest of Sri Lanka’s birds as well as the island’s tallest avian, the black-necked stork as well as the most elusive of migrants that flock to the island.

SITHULPAWWA
In ancient times, Sithulpawwa was known as Chiththala Pabbatha, or “the hill of the quiet mind”. The nature of such a name is personified by its significance as an ancient Buddhist monastery dating back to the reign of King Kavantissa in the 2nd century B.C.

The monastic complex includes several religious sites including a cave with paintings over 2000 years old, as well as a temple atop a resident rock that rises above the surrounding wilderness.

Located just over an hour away from Jetwing Safari Camp, Sithulpawwa is located deep within the natural habitats of the Yala National Park and is no stranger to wildlife such as elephants and leopards frequenting the area.

Surrounded by only the sounds of the wilderness and temple chants, a journey to Sithulpawwa is a peaceful escape that is fitting for its name.

KATARAGAMA
With references in the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle of the Mahavamsa, the town of Kataragama holds a wealth of history. Beyond its repute as an ancient capital for rulers of the Ruhuna kingdom, Kataragama also served as a place of refuge for northern kings who fled from South Indian invasions of their lands.

More importantly however, the town is revered for the Kataragama Deviyo, or God of Kataragama – a deity worshipped across multiple faiths.

For Buddhists, the Kiri Vehera dagoba is situated on the site where the Lord Buddha once visited, while a Bo tree grown from a sapling of the Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura is also found on the grounds of the famed Kataragama Temple.

Here, Hindus worship the resident deity as Katirkamam – the God of War, also known as Murugan. Additionally, the indigenous Veddas of Sri Lanka have also long venerated the God of Kataragama as a guardian deity of the island.

Kataragama is located one hour away from Jetwing Safari Camp by road. From our home in the Southern Province, the journey takes you into the neighbouring Uva Province at the foot of Sri Lanka’s central highlands.

Kataragama sits at the provincial border, on the edge of Yala National Park’s northwestern entrance, with long roads lined with shady trees that lead pilgrims and travellers alike to the many religious attractions in the area.
