The building was handed down to a former palace worker as a gift for his devotion and loyalty to the dynasty. During the French protectorate, his son lovingly restored many of its original features and the address became synonymous with glamorous society balls and parties. In 2001 in partnership with Historical Monuments Organisation it was revived once again.

LIVING ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE
La Sultana Marrakech has been refurbished using traditional Moroccan decoration techniques, to create an intemporal place of a bygone era with the comfort of present time.

The craftsmen experts (Melems), stone and plaster carvers and zellige makers all use techniques and knowledge passed from generation to generation and are highly valuable today in preserving Morocco’s cultural heritage.

Decades after the refurbishment, we are keeping centuries-old techniques alive at La Sultana Marrakech and are using them to tell stories of the present through an Architectural Heritage tour of the property.

The tour is led by our Living Architectural & Heritage Curators who walks guests through the different decorative arts zellige, plaster, brick, tadelakt, craftsmanship techniques.

The tour includes a stop at their workshop to see them perform and feel the materials and tools they used. In doing so, we keep traditions alive for future generations and nourish an avidity for understanding these local traditions.

Follow the rich scent of bread being baked through the narrow streets of the medina of Marrakech, and you may find yourself at one of the traditional communal ovens. This is where locals bring rounds of tender wheat dough ready to bake as most homes in Morocco do not have their own ovens, even within the homes of the richer families.

The very few families that do have their own ovens usually prefer to use the communal ovens as it saves them time, money in fuel, and also helps them avoid heating up their homes in the hot summer.

Marrakech has many beautiful golf courses with two of the finest clubs, the Royal and the Amelkis, only 15 minutes from La Sultana Marrakech.

ROYAL GOLF CLUB
This legendary golf club was established in 1927 by the Pasha of Marrakech and is one of the oldest courses in Morocco. Enjoy the aroma of eucalyptus and orange tree blossom across the 27 holes majestically landscaped course. 2 golf courses: 18 holes

PALMERAIE GOLF CLUB
Extending over 100 hectares, the 27 holes golf course, work of Robert Trent Jones Sr., offers spectacular views of the Atlas Mountains and is a challenge for golfers of all levels. The wide panoramas and seven cool, sparkling lakes make this golf course one of the most beautiful in Morocco.

SAMANAH GOLF CLUB
On the road to Amizmiz the Samanah Golf Club is set across 100 hectares, and offers open views of the Atlas Mountains. This is the only course designed by Jack Nicklaus in Morroco. It is a Par 72 championship course and has received many awards & prizes.

AMELKIS GOLF CLUB
Amelkis Golf Club is a set of 3 courses of 9 holes, par 36 course each, set in a beautiful landscape. It is near the Royal Golf Club and shares wonderful views of the snow-covered Atlas Mountains.

There are a number of water features and bunkers set among palm groves making it a challenge for any player. The fairways are lined by century old palm trees, and giant papyrus.

AL MAADEN
The 18-hole golf course lies in a fabulous wooded area at the heart of this undulating natural space set against the spectacular backdrop of the Atlas Mountains.

The course advances in a series of regular curves alternating between plains and hilly terrain. Designed by renowned golf architect Kyle Phillips, golfers of all levels will enjoy playing the course with its varied geography.

STAR GAZING
After sunset, head to the rooftop for a private tutorial on reading the stars, planets, nebulas and other heavenly objects. Learn how to enjoy the night sky wherever you are and let yourself be led step by step by an expert to explore the Moroccan sky and immerse yourself in the Milky Way with the help of binoculars and a telescope.

GIANT CACTUS GARDEN 
Near Marrakech, discover a cactus farm ‘Cactus Thiemann’, the largest cactus plantation in Africa, established in Marrakech in the sixties, featuring giant cactus on a large area of land.

This dreamy landscape is a great outdoor excursion providing the perfect setting for a family photo shoot and an experience full of emotions, creating good memories. We recommend our guests take suitable clothes with their camera, sunglasses and sun cream.

SIDI GHANEM
One of Morocco’s great strengths lies in its small, family-run artisanal designers and some of them have gathered in the industrial zone (Sidi Ghanem), 5 km from the Médina of Marrakech.

This urban enclave is home to design studios and innovative artisans that make and sell carpets, furniture, ceramics and textiles. Tangier-based fashion designer Salima Abdel Wahab, Lighting Designer Henry Cath, and French designer Laurence Landon are a few of the notable designers to seek out.

Sometimes compared to New York’s SOHO district in the 1970’s with large loft spaces and concrete buildings, Sidi Ghanem is where architects and interior design enthusiasts quench their thirst for interior design while on holiday.

SAFFRON
Morocco’s traditional local produce is of incomparable quality and includes aromatics like saffron-aka “the red gold” grown in only a few regions throughout the kingdom. The two well-known regions are Taliouine, a little mountain village in the south of Morocco, and the Ourika Valley at the foot of the Atlas Mountains near Marrakech.

Discover the Atlas Mountains and fields of purple crocuses in the picturesque Ourika Valley and witness the labor-intensive process of the saffron harvest. The harvest lasts typically three weeks in late October or early November and is managed by women who gather early in the morning to complete the day’s harvest.

BERBER DISCOVERY
