Levens Hall is the home of the world’s oldest topiary gardens. Once a stark, imposing Pele Tower built c1250-1300, Levens Hall has grown into an impressive Elizabethan house, with each generation leaving its mark on the architectural fabric of the building.

The result is a stunning family home with spectacular interiors and impressive collections of furniture, clocks, and paintings. The Hall has am intriguing history and fascinating links to the Duke of Wellington.

Designed in the 1690s by Monsieur Guillaume Beaumont, gardener to King James II, and Colonel James Grahme, these ten acres of gardens retain many original features. With over 100 ancient box and yew trees sculpted into abstract or geometric shapes, the garden is a remarkable place to explore.

Leavens deer park is situated just across the road from Levens Hall. If you have time to spare take a stroll along the marked footpaths and discover some of the most beautiful and timeless scenery in the country, a haven for wildlife, and a breath of peace and tranquility in a busy world.

Enjoy the stunning scenery and wildlife at any time of year. The park is home to black fallow deer, kingfishers and a heard of rare breed Bagot goats.

BRANTWOOD
Brantwood is a paradise of art and nature. A historic house and vibrant center for the arts of Ruskin’s former home and gardens have a wealth of things to see and do. Brantwood offers a fascinating insight into the world of John Ruskin and the last 28 years of his life spent at Coniston.

Filled with many fine paintings, beautiful furniture, and Ruskin’s personal treasures, the house retains the character of its former famous resident. The 250-acre estate comprises woodland, moors, and lakeside meadows with a diversity of habitats and ecosystems rich in wildflowers and wildlife.

The six distinct gardens stretch as far as the lakeshore, with many beautiful spots to enjoy the views across Coniston Water to the Coppermines Valley and the Old Man. With a range of contemporary exhibitions, concerts, courses, and special events Brantwood continues in the Ruskin tradition today.

Born in 1819, Ruskin became one of the greatest thinkers of the Victorian era, perhaps best known for his defense of JMW Turner. He was a man of genius and vision, a painter and poet in his own right as well as one of the most influential social and environmental theorists. Many great thinkers have been profoundly shaped by Ruskin’s ideas including Tolstoy, Gandhi, and Proust.
