With its unique design and atmosphere, the Maison Bistro & Hotel bows with respect to the historical location and its gastronomic past. A cozy Bistro, a magical event cellar, a pleasant street terrace, 25 individually designed rooms and the inner courtyard garden await its guests in an environment that has been dynamically changing for centuries, yet preserves value.
The history of the ‘Spiegel House’, known as a bakery, dates back to 1464, when a contemporary cooper’s and lathe’s guild operated here. After the siege of the Castle in 1686, Bernát Spiegel bought the ruined building in 1701, and then had a small ground-floor, baroque-style house built on it.
The basket-arched gate, whose keystones are decorated with the insignia of the baking guild to this day, reflects the original form of the building. Beneath the building a two-story cellar system is carved into the rock, which is currently the largest continuous cellar in the Castle.
In 1964, preserving the baroque form of the street front, the building was converted into a restaurant, which became Budapest’s most popular entertainment venue under the name ‘Régi Országház Restaurant’.
Until the end of the 1990s, people were raving about the different atmospheres and the furnishings of the rooms, the graceful furniture, the tile stoves, not to mention the traditional Hungarian dishes, and the wines offered in the cellar and the very famous greasy bread offered with pepper and onion; this was one of the most popular and coolest spots in the Castle area.
The former Spiegel Ház – belongs now to an American-Hungarian owner – opened its emblematic Big Green Gate in 2016, preserving so many traces of past centuries. With its unique design and atmosphere, the Maison Bistro & Hotel bows with respect to the historical location and its gastronomic past.
