ENVIRONMENT
The colours, sounds and silences of nature reign supreme at the Meltar, which is on the hillside and offers a lovely view of the centuries’ old woods and sloping hills. The Meltar is surrounded by nature with the beauty of all the seasons, and their amazing colours, perfumes and atmospheres.

Given its position in the golf course and cross country ski track, the Meltar is perfect to get mind and body back into shape, discovering a new relationship with your body, nature and the wonder of silence.

THE HISTORY
There used to be an old farmhouse with an unusual name “Meltar”, which means swamp in the Cimbrian language, who settled on the plateau around 10 AD.

There has been no trace of the swamp for centuries now, but something has remained of the simple solid character of the Cimbrian people in the house, which was built in typical local stone and stands up strong and solid among the woods on the plateau.

The old farmhouse is now the Meltar Boutique Hotel, which combines luxurious simplicity with refined surroundings, protecting the magic of the silence and natural harmony. The Meltar is situated in the centre of the Golf Course and cross country ski track and is the ideal choice for a holiday dedicated to nature and general physical and mental wellbeing.

Simple menus at lunchtime full of nutritious, fresh and light dishes are ideal between a walk in the woods or a game of golf. In the evening there is a splendid choice of more flavoursome refined dishes, served with precious and rare wines.

THE SAUNA
The heat given off by the stones envelops the body and enters the skin, causing natural sweating to eliminate any toxins, to purify the organism and restore balance.

The perfume of the essences in the hot air is soothing and helps breathing and recovering the deepest energies. The green wood around the sauna embraces the body in a wonderful hug with nature.

THE TURKISH BATH
The steam helps deep breathing, releasing tension and fatigue. It enters the skin deep down and purifies it, leaving it supple and glowing. The aromas of the essential oils seduce the senses leaving a pleasant feeling of wellbeing and calm.

THE GOLF COURSE
The Meltar is the only hotel in the Asiago Golf Club, which is considered one of the loveliest 18-hole mountain courses in Europe.

Designed by the architect Peter Harradine, famous for his great experience in mountain courses, the Asiago Golf Club offers all the advantages of a plateau with the fascination of the mountains: a gentle, panoramic course without many changes in level, meaning players can play their ball with the feet always on the flat. Originally built in 1960 with nine holes designed by J. Harris, it was later updated to 18 holes.

THE OTHER SPORTS
A stay at the Meltar means being able to practice numerous different strengthening sports, some high adrenaline level and very challenging.

Trekking, walks and Nordic walking are a must: a wide choice of very romantic and fascinating tracks, some very panoramic settings, and of varying difficulty. A rest in the more than 100 mountain huts on the plateau make the walk very “tasty” and are full of interesting culture. All-round wellbeing.

Tourist cycling, mountain bike and downhill MTB: bike lovers are spoilt for choice with some breathtaking downhill runs, climbs and tracks across the plain. Sweat and adrenaline.

Horse riding: a fascinating ride through the woods and meadows on the plateau is beyond compare. Total contact with nature in the magnificent mountain silence. Pure magic.

Rafting and canoeing: on rubber rafts along the River Brenta, jumping through the stormy waters for non-stop fun, or canoeing along calmer waters.

Pure emotion.Free-climbing: climb the rocky faces on the plateau, warmed by the sun, with varying challenging levels and exciting pulls. Fatigue and challenge.

CROSS COUNTRY SKIING
You can even leave the Meltar with cross country skis on your feet because in the winter a part of the area becomes a Nordic skiing circuit. Cross country skiing is like the national sport on the Asiago plateau. More than 500 kilometres of slopes through beautiful landscape, for one of the most varied and complete circuits in Europe and, perhaps, the world.

Always well beaten and marked, varying lengths and difficulty, the plateau tracks offer an incomparable variety. In fact, in 2013 the World Nordic Skiing championship will be held in Asiago, and for several years many national teams have been going to Asiago and the 7 municipalities for their training and preparations.

There are seven cross country skiing centres linked with each other, ski schools, equipment hire centres and ski instructors available for Meltar guests. An efficient luggage transport service with motor-sleds available for anyone who wants to spend a few days on the high slopes, skiing from one mountain refuge to another.

The Super Nordic Skipass is a single ski pass that can be used for several days on all the slopes in the Asiago 7 Municipalities circuit. The Super Nordic Skipass can also be used for skiing on all the slopes in Trentino and other cross country ski centres.

THE NATURE
The Asiago plateau is the largest in Europe and is situated between the Brenta and Astico rivers, with altitudes between 200 meters and 2300 meters. The highest peak is the Cima Dodici at 2341 meters above sea level.

The mountain chain is formed of a series of sedimentary rocks, which were deposited in the sea between 223 and 35 million years ago. The entire plateau stands on a dolomite base, while the upper layers are formed of Grey Calcareous rocks (rich in fossils), together with Biancone, Red Ammonite or Red Scale.

An important role is played in the geomorphology of the area by the Karst dissolution, which means that surface water is very rare while there are several underground caves (up to 2009, a total of 2562 had been explored), some almost a thousand meters deep (like the Abyss Malga Fossetta, -974 m).

In naturalistic terms, the great variety of ecosystems makes the Asiago plateau very attractive. The area can be divided in two zones: the first from 700 to 1000/1100 meters altitude and includes the towns, and the second is just mountains which reach 2000 meters high, where there are extensive meadows, thriving hardwood and conifer forests, which are the habitat for some beautiful fauna such as deer, roe, chamois, squirrel, fox, marmot and ermine.

The royal eagle dominates the skies above the Asiago plateau, which a the fortunate are able to admire in all its majestic glory. The botanic wealth of the Asiago plateau includes some beautiful floral species, such as the Turk’s cap lily, narcissus, gentian, rhododendron, heather, edelweiss, carnation and dandelion.

Among the natural beauties of the Asiago plateau, the Marcesina Plain stands out, where the typical peaty vegetation is predominant, with some sections fenced off to protect the amazing botanic species there.

There are more than 100 mountain pastures on the plateau which, given their extension and number, are an important grazing system for the entire alpine area.

The Burlina breed is the typical cattle here, while the Foza is the local breed of sheep, which is the only breed that is resistant to scrapie, an illness belonging to the transmittable subacute spongiform encephalopathy, like BSE, better known as “mad cow disease”.
