Each room is individually designed with classic yet modern design and interiors. The unique architecture allows us to have an excellent variety of rooms and room layouts facing different streets and sights in Bergen.

The historic building was originally designed and built for Bergen’s largest bank in 1876. The unique building, also known as “Banco Rotto”, is a famous landmark in Bergen with its distinctive brick facade and characteristic architectural style.

THE ARCHITECTURE
The main floor is an open grand room with heavy granite walls and ionic columns in polished marble. The building with its many decorative details was designed by architect Herman Schirmer and later extended twice.

Architect Schak Bull, who also drew Edvard Grieg’s residence “Troldhaugen”, was responsible for the last extension in 1918. Schak Bull was also Edvard Grieg’s cousin.

Our greatest wish is that you really feel that Opus XVI is something more than just another luxury hotel. We promise not only wonderful beds, a great location and warm and welcoming service, but also an atmosphere unlike any other, drawing on the rich heritage of the Grieg family and the historic backdrop that connects us to the traditions of Scottish hospitality.

Our goal is to preserve and enrich, but also to use this unique foundation to move forward and create a modern boutique experience that is both welcoming and luxurious.

THE AFTERNOON TEA
Afternoon tea was invented in Britain in the early 1840s. Well known for her hunger, the Duchess of Bedford introduced the mid-day snack to fill the gap between lunch and supper. Her ritual was to have a pot of tea, some bread and butter, and something sweet to finish off her meal.

The Duchess found the meal so pleasant, that she decided to invite guests over to join her, which is the story behind the well known social gathering we today call Afternoon Tea.

In modern times, Afternoon Tea has evolved into a proper social feast, with finger sandwiches, sweets and a pot of freshly brewed tea. If you are feeling fancy it might also be accompanied with something bubbly!
