The Pousada do Castelo de Óbidos is located in Vila de Óbidos and is one of the 7 wonders of Portugal. This Pousada is of enormous historical importance and includes medieval features from the 9th century.

The castle was given as a wedding present by King D. Dinis to Queen Santa Isabel during their wedding that took place on site. This castle is one of the most impressive and romantic sites you can visit.

It includes common areas such as the restaurant and Castelo bar. Don’t forget the impressive esplanade together with the reception.

At the Pousada de Óbidos you can choose to stay in the castle and have an authentic medieval experience or stay in the Casa do Castelo (located right next to the castle), where you will have an experience closer to that of living in town.

ROOMS & SUITES
With 11 rooms in the Castle itself (three of them in the castle keep) and another 8 rooms located in the Casa do Castelo, the Pousada offers various accommodation options. The medieval theme can be seen throughout the whole building, especially on the thick stone walls and four-poster beds of the Castelo Suite.

Some of the more spacious Casa rooms have an inviting fireplace and historical features such as vaulted ceiling, wood panelling, tile-lined walls and ogival doors. The 700-year history of the building does not take away from its modern comfort and connection to the world.

The QR Codes on the doors allow you to learn more about the kings and queens who gave the rooms their names. You’ll also be provided with a dressing gown, minibar, air conditioning, stylish bathrooms and free Wi-Fi.

Dining
A truly memorable experience for those visiting Óbidos is lunch or dinner at the Pousada restaurant. Chef Cláudia Santiago is very familiar with regional products,: the juicy fruits from the fertile lands of the West, seasonal vegetables, fish freshly caught on the coast or traditional meats and cold cuts.

With the Portuguese cuisine as the starting point, she creates delicious recipes that will feast your eyes, especially when they are served in the romantic medieval atmosphere of the Castle.

In a historical yet cosy setting, surrounded by Manueline windows, old ceramic tiles and a view to the medieval town, the restaurant uses traditional local products, with an expert approach following the trends of the 21st century.

Chef Cláudia Santiago combines scents, flavours and textures better than anyone, making the most out of honest ingredients. Telmo Oliveira, the Restaurant manager, recommends the best wines for each dish.

Start your meal with, say, a hearty creamy mussel soup, followed by Chevre cheese fried in panko crust with Iberian salad and red fruit jam.

There are fish courses, such as the very Portuguese Codfish “El Rei D. Dinis”; meat dishes such as the Stewed chicken in a clay pot with potatoes, pearl onions, mustard, little slices of bacon and tomato; and also vegetarian options, pasta and salads.

Being an agricultural region, the West takes advantage of its vegetables, whether for main courses or as a side dish, such as green asparagus, red onions, rapini, parsnips, baby potatoes and tomatoes which we can find roasted, sauteed, stewed, steamed, creamed or pureed.

As for desserts, it is worth highlighting the influence of Portuguese conventual sweets, such as the recipe of the Brisas do Lis custard cakes, originally made in the kitchens of the Santana Convent in Leiria, in the 15th century.

While in Óbidos, it’s impossible to resist the Rocha do Oeste pears poached in regional Ginja d’Óbidos wine, another iconic 16th century recipe in this town. There are also contemporary desserts such as Tarte Tatin, and also Portuguese cheese boards to end your meal on a high note.

In keeping with the season, the Pousada also has two bars available.

The Castelo bar is ideal for stories on winter days, which can be inspired by the armour and chest decorating the space. Order a hot drink and gaze at the landscape from the window. The Esplanada lobby bar has many refreshing drinks while you catch up with the other guests.

Meetings & Events
Despite the Castle’s absolutely inescapable defensive architecture, it is possible to organize modern events and make them even more impressive with the location.

There are room facilities in town with just the perfect size for those who want to organize a meeting, a training, a presentation, or even a release – and you can always go back to the hotel for a coffee break or meal.

As for weddings and celebrations… in such an iconic place it is easy to anticipate how special your event will be. With a capacity to accommodate up to 150 people, depending on how the venue is arranged, so all you have to do is choose whether to organize a dinner meeting, a cocktail event or a party till morning – if you want the castle all for yourself.

If you want to get married in one of the town churches, you can travel in a carriage back to the castle, where the decor and the wedding reception will have the sophistication you always dreamed of.

Moreover, there have been plenty of marriage proposals on the towers and special restaurant tables. The magical atmosphere and the particular aura of this castle are all you need to make the most special moment of your life even more memorable.

Leisure & Services
Among walls and battlements, towers and corridors, it is hard not to feel like a true guardian of the castle. And it is easier to enjoy the medieval details if you are surrounded by all the 21st century comforts. With internet access in every bedroom, newspapers, plenty of board games, mini-bar and book crossing books.

Be sure to schedule a massage in your room, with all the comforts and historic surroundings of this house of queens. You’ll also have at your disposal a customized service of flower delivery, to offer your better half.

Obidos

The village of Óbidos was conquered from the Moors in 1148 by King T Afonso Henriques, but it was not until the beginning of the 16th century that Óbidos gained the Manueline traces for which it is known. This was the work of its Major, João de Dijon.

The cultural treasures hidden in this small village are endless — including 14 churches and chapels — and among these, the Church of St. Mary, covered by the
typical glazed tiles and pictures painted by Josefa de Ayalla y Cabrera (Josefa de Óbidos).

Its surroundings are also full of interesting spots, like the aqueduct ordered by D. Catarina of Austria, the wife of King João III, and the Lagoon of Óbidos, the right
spot for fishing and hunting, close to the site where royal picnics took place.

And if the historical environment has not completely won over you, wait until you discover the delicious gastronomy.

Óbidos is rich in attractions and events. From the International Chocolate Festival, in March, and the Medieval Market in July, to the stories and dreams of the event “Óbidos Vila Natal” (Óbidos, a Christmas Village) in December – the reasons for receiving our guests again and again are endless.

As happens in so many historic towns, what is there to be seen again and again seems to have no end. Starting with the imposing Castle, one of Portugal’s 7 Wonders, and ending with the infinite churches and chapels, there is a story to be told at each corner.

In Óbidos, typical dishes are based on fish: from “Caldeirada” (Fish Stew) of the Óbidos Lagoon to Fried or Soaked Eels — no meal is complete without one of the
innumerable desserts; including the “Rocha” Pear. And nothing better to flatter the palates of the region than a “Ginjinha”, the liquor made of sour cherries.
