Welcome to Iwaso. This wonderful Luxurious Ryokan, opened in 1893 was the first ryokan opened for business on Miyajima. Iwaso is situated in a very beautiful part of Momijidani Park and when it was first constructed the owner built a tea shop and planted the area with maples trees.

Iwaso was constructed in the “miya-daiku” style, by the same craftsmen who built Japanese shrines. Previous guests have included famous authors, artists, and members of the Japanese royal family.

There are 42 Japanese-style rooms located in 3 different buildings – the Shinkan, the Honkan, and the Hanare. The Honkan (original building) at Iwaso is the oldest one and it is more ornate and traditional than the Shinkan (annex).

However, the rooms in the Honkan do not have private baths while the rooms in the Shinkan have private baths. There are also shared baths at Iwaso (same gender only).

Traditional Kyoto-style meals are served to the guests, and a pick-up service is available.

Tour on Miyajima island, one of three most scenic spots in Japan to your heart’s content

Itsukushima Shrine has 1400 year history, is registered as World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO, and is an old shrine located on Miyajima, one of the three most scenic spots in Japan.

The Shrine was built by Taira no Kiyomori(Shogun) in the hope of prosperity of his clan. They thrived by believing the island itself as a god. Beautiful buildings on the sea are in the style of court nobles’ houses in the Heian period. They make wonderful scenery merging into nature.

History of Iwaso
People used to worship Itsukushima Shrine and the sacred mountain from the ship on the sea.Momijidani Valley is located just behind the Shrine, which is at the foot of the sacred mountain(object of worship) with an inexhaustible clear stream for all the seasons.

Winter seasonal food of Seto Inland Sea
Oysters of Miyajima

The season of Miyajima oyster is winter. The flavor gets better as the temperature becomes lower and lower, and reaches the peak in February. We serve oysters in various styles such as grilled, vinegared, and deep fried dishes.

Healty breakfast to start a day
Rich taste tomato juice and yogurt are unforgettably delicious. ‘Koshihikari’ brand rice produced in Hiroshima prefecture is served at breakfast. Steamed fluffy rice, miso soup with original broth, big hot Japanese omlette and grilled fish.

Birth of Wakamiya hot spring
rare hot spring on Miyajima island

We were partially using the well water from 1885. Our land lady 2 generations back used to say, “Water here makes my skin smooth’. We thought ‘it might happen to be’ and our investigation ended up finding the source of simple weak radioactive cold mineral spring from only 5 meters deep.

It was named ‘Wakamiya hot spring’ because the source area was called ‘Wakamiyagahara’.

While bathing in the hot spring
you may encounter deers
If you are lucky, you can see deers in front of the open-air bath which is facing to their path. At night, you can enjoy the view of lit-up primeval forest.
Pleasant sound of stream comforts you, too.
