The Kalahari plains in the western sections of park transition into more recognizable lowveld savannah and acacia thickets, while the hillsides and riverine sections provide more wooded areas, providing the perfect environment for an extraordinary array of wildlife. This is one of the only places in Africa where you can see Aardwolf, Brown Hyena and Spotted Hyena together in one reserve.

Aside from the excellent opportunity of seeing Africa’s Big-5, the Madikwe Game Reserve is also home to healthy Cheetah and Wild Dog populations, as well as Africa’s Secret-7: Aardvark, African Wild Cat, Civet, Large Spotted Genet, Pangolin, Porcupine and Serval.

EVENING SAFARI
As the sun starts to drop and the shadows lengthen over the Madikwe plains, so the magic that slowly awakens the nocturnal creatures takes hold. Spectacular African sunsets are almost a spiritual experience with shades of blue, violet, pink, orange and red scattered across the horizon. The ideal opportunity to take relax with a sundowner and absorb the sights and sounds.

Slowly the first stars start to appear and predators like lion, leopard and both spotted and brown hyena, use the moonlight to search for potential prey. Porcupines, bushbabies, honey badgers and other interesting animals awaken from their daytime retreats to being foraging.

Gleaming green and yellow eyes give clues as to the animals’ whereabouts, as do alarm calls from monkeys or francolins disturbed as take higher positions for safety during the night.

BUSH WALK
There is a lot to love about vehicle-based safaris – you can cover more ground and potentially see more game, however, being on foot in the African bushveld is an adrenaline pumping experience that affords guests the opportunity to take in the finer details often missed on a game-viewer.

It is an experience that truly awakens the senses being fully immersed in nature, being able to smell, hear and physically touch the surroundings. You are literally walking in the animals’ footsteps!

Seeing any of the bigger mammals on a vehicle is a very different experience from seeing them on foot, which can only be described as exhilarating. You will form a deep connection with nature and an appreciation for the natural miracles that occur every day.

BIRDING
Madikwe Game Reserves diversity of flora and condensed biomes, as well as unique location attracts over 350-species of bird to the region. An absolute birders paradise!

A weekend visit in summer is likely to render 180 to 200 species, while a winter visit could yield around 120 to 150 species during your stay. Specials that occur in the dry plains on the reserve include Yellow-throated Sandgrouse, Kori Bustard, Temminck’s Courser and White Stork.

Double-banded Courser and Burchell’s Courser have also been recorded, while the Bronze-winged Courser is commonly seen during the summer months in the more wooded areas.

The aptly named Southern Pied Babbler is an ever present and commonly seen around the lodge, along with other bushveld species such as Paradise Flycatcher, Acacia Pied Barbet, Green-winged Pytilia and several Waxbill species.

Madikwe is an haven for raptor species, with several species of Eagle, Goshawks, Vultures (several endangered) and Goshawks regularly seen.

CONSERVATION
Madikwe Game Reserve is home to the endangered African Wild Dog and has the highest concentration of rhino in Africa. Conservation is an active and important part of life here.

SUITES
Molori Safari comprises five unique open-air suites, thoughtfully distanced from one another to offer absolute privacy. They include: two premier suites (Ngwedi and Lesedi), one family premier suite (Sephiri) and two presidential suites (Metsi and Molelo).

All suites have floor-to-ceiling retractable glass walls, opening onto a private deck and swimming pool. MAIN LODGE
The Molori Safari main lodge comprises four dining areas, a library, a large living room and bar. The living room and bar areas open onto an outdoor deck featuring a hot spa bath and twin infinity pools. A rim-flow chilled spa bath is also situated on the highest mountainside deck for optimal wildlife viewing.

Guests can unwind with a cocktail, a book or a cigar on Molori’s many relaxation decks, including the prized reading and star decks which also feature comfortable daybeds.

CLIMATE
Madikwe has hot, wet summers and cool, sunny winters. Summer daytime temperatures average around 31°C (88°F) and winter daytime temperatures average around 22°C (72°F). Summer evenings are comfortable with an occasional breeze and winter evenings become quite chilly with temperatures dropping as low as 2°C (35°F).

The rainy season begins around October and runs through to April with heavy rainfall occurring between November and February. The dry season or winter months begin around May and run through to mid-September.

RHINO CONSERVATION
Madikwe Game Reserve is also home to the highest concentration of rhino in Africa and rhino conservation is an active part of life here. Molori Safari is committed to rhino conservation and, through the Ichikowitz Family Foundation, works closely with Madikwe Game Reserve as well as SANPARKS, covering the greater Kruger National Park.

The Foundation provides both parks with specialised equipment and Molori’s field guides assist Madikwe with night patrols and are available for immediate dispatch should an incident occur.

ENVIRONMENT
One of the key focus areas of the Ichikowitz Family Foundation is the environment and within in this the area of anti-poaching intitiatives across the continent.

In Madikwe itself the Foundation has been involved in working closely with the Provincial Park and its CPU (Count Poaching Unit). It is fact that the success of a team of field rangers can be directly attributed to the training and equipment they have that enables them to operate effectively for long periods in the bush.

The Foundation has helped achieve this objective by ensuring the unit has been fully trained and has provided them with full field combat kit. This includes uniforms, combat gear, communication equipment, combat lights and cutting edge sighting technology.

The Foundation in association with Molori has also assisted in the rhino notching programme – this has been highly successful with almost all the rhino in the park having been notched thereby providing the correct intelligence in order to support the rhino conservation effort in the park.

The Foundation has also been vital in supporting SANPARKS (South Africa National Parks) assisting with donation of high level equipment and training.A GAZELLE was donated by the Ichikowitz Family Foundation as part of an ongoing capacity building partnership announced almost one year ago.

The Foundation previously donated a Seeker MKII Surveillance aeroplane, which has been operating in the Kruger National Park since December 2013. The GAZELLE has been purposefully configured and will vastly increase areas that can be traversed and has additional equipment to increase aerial support. It has a maximum airspeed of 310km/h, a range of 670km and service ceiling of 5000 meters.

The GAZELLE will bring the advantages of a light attack helicopter to the aid of SANParks Anti-Poaching operations the minute it takes to the air. This together with the efforts of the Foundation in Africa demonstrates a high level commitment to drive the awareness and drive action in ensuring that Africa’s hertiage is preserved.

Molori Safari is also involved in rhino tagging efforts and guests can by arrangement be part of an extraordinary hands-on rhino tagging experience. Guests participate in the notching, DNA sampling and micro chipping of the rhino’s horns.

This allows the park to identify and track rhinos and keep an up to date database of all rhinos in the park – necessary measures in deterring and impeding poachers. Guests can work on the ground with the vet and ecologist, in close proximity to the sedated rhino, or take to the air in a helicopter during the rhino search.

WILD DOG AWARENESS
Madikwe Game Reserve is home to the endangered wild dog, the second most endangered carnivore in Africa after the Ethiopian wolf. There are fewer than 6000 remaining in Africa, although some estimates put their numbers at about 3000. The current population of wild dogs in South Africa is estimated at less than 400.

These intelligent, highly interactive, and cooperative predators move in packs of between six to twenty, though larger packs were more common before they dogs became endangered. The pack is usually dominated by a monogamous breeding pair; the female has a litter of 2 to 20 pups, which are cared for by the entire pack.

Highly social they communicate by touch, actions and vocalisations, and are expert hunters – close to every wild dog hunt is successful. Packs have also been known to share food and to assist weak or ill members.

The Molori wild dog experience shares with guests the intensive push to conserve and protect these amazing animals for future generations. Guests spend an early morning tracking down the Madikwe wild dog pack and learn about the pack’s strictly defined social hierarchy, the bonds between members and their cooperative hunting techniques.

SAFARI
Molori Safari recently hosted the Cobb guests from the United States – amazing people with the kindest souls. During their stay at Molori, they spoke to JohnD, their game ranger, about the possibility of visiting a local village to understand the culture and everyday life.

JohnD arranged a visit to the Molatedi village and included a visit to the village primary school. Molatedi is a small village situated very close to the Madikwe Game Reserve. In short, the Cobb’s were completely humbled by the experience. So much so, that on their return to the USA, they arranged to send over new sports shoes, t-shirts and soccer balls for every single child at the school.

With the help of Principal Regina, who assisted with the task of collecting shoe sizes and, a large number of emails back and forth with the USA, a number of boxes were finally delivered to Molori Safari.

The handover was a magical experience for all that were at the ceremony. Smiling, laughter and joyous chit chatter could be heard all day as children tried on their new shoes and t-shirts.

There was much dancing and singing by the children, who also enjoyed a lunch sponsored by the Molori Safari team. It was a memorable day, never to be forgotten. Molori Safari, JohnD and principal Regina were extremely grateful to the Cobb guests for their overwhelming generosity and for making a difference to this community.

Discover nocturnal adventure on a night drive tracking Madikwe’s Super Seven. Using hi-tech torches, you have the rare opportunity to see into the nocturnal world of lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, rhinoceros, wild dog and cheetah. A whole new dimension is revealed on this exhilarating experience.

RHINO TAGGING
Molori Safari is involved in rhino conservation efforts and guests can by arrangement be part of an extraordinary hands-on rhino tagging experience – involving the notching, DNA sampling and micro chipping of the rhino’s horns.

Guests can work on the ground with the vet and ecologist, in close proximity to the sedated rhino, or take to the air in a helicopter during the rhino search. The rhino tagging conservation experience is charged as a separate cost and must be arranged a week in advance.

Guests of all ages can participate, with a high level of parental monitoring required for younger children. The rhino tagging experience begins early morning, between 6:30 and 7:00am, and runs into the early afternoon. Lunch is taken to guests in the bush or a late lunch can be arranged on return to the lodge.

On the far northern border of South Africa lies a beautiful area known as the Groot Marico and it is in this spectacular setting, in the malaria free Madikwe Game Reserve, that Tau Game Lodge South Africa is situated.

The jumbled hillocks of Tshwene-Tshwene and the dramatic ridge of the Dwarsberg Mountains expose rocks of up to 2630 million years old and artifacts of the Stone and Iron Ages are still found in the Groot Marico dust.

Tau Game Lodge South Africa was built in 1995 and overlooks a vast natural waterhole, which attracts a variety of game, as does the diverse vegetation that thrives in the fertile topsoil.

Situated at an easy 4 hours driving distance from Johannesburg or a 50 minute daily scheduled flight from Johannesburg International airport, Tau “The Place of the Lion” can host and accommodate up to 60 people.

ACCOMMODATION
The décor and furnishings of Tau Game Lodge are Africa-inspired and the rooms are equipped with both air-conditioning and ceiling fans. Thirty luxury thatched chalets are spread out in U-formation on either side of the lodge, offering excellent views of animals approaching the water from the opposite bank.

All Chalets have views of the game approaching the water hole. Each chalet ensures privacy with its own viewing deck, en suite bathroom, open-air shower. The more spacious Deluxe chalets with comfortable seating areas, can accommodate parents and children wishing to share the same room.

The sliding doors allow for spectacular views of the breathtaking beautiful tranquillity of the rugged surroundings of the diverse bushveld. The Family suite and Family unit are both consisting of two bedrooms which are semi inter-leading and share a comfortable lounge.

THE LUXURY SUITES
The 5 Luxury Suites are situated on either side of the main area and are connected via a raised wooden walkway along the front side of the suites.

The walkway guides the guests through and above lush gardens and gives a sense all boundary’s broken, while experiencing the true African bush. This also optimizes the opportunity to spot wildlife passing by on their way to the water hole in front of the main area.

The luxury suites are tastefully furnished and each suite is decorated according to the African animal theme the specific suite is named after. All suites comprise an en- suite bathroom, outdoor shower, a tea and coffee station and a private deck offering a relaxing view of the beautiful landscape and all the wonders the bush has to offer.

The Family Suite consists of 2 adjacent Deluxe chalets joined by a semi-interleading lounge area. There is a licensed bar in the main building and an outside bar in the Boma, where any wine or liquor can be made available on request (bar purchases are extras).

Although there is no formal Chapel, the Lodge’s buildings have served the purpose on many occasions, while Wildebeest, Impala or Kudu witnessed the wedding from the far side of the waterhole.

For the more adventurous bridal couple there is an option of a bush ceremony which takes place at a beautiful selected site in the Reserve, the standard set up for this ceremony includes a gazebo, red carpet and chairs with white chair covers.

We will be able to give you contact numbers for a florist, photographer and minister (these services are not included in the package). This very special, and often fairly stressful day, can be turned into an extraordinary occasion, focused on spending quality time with dear friends and close family in a relaxed environment at our South African wedding venue in the wild.

GAME VIEWING LOUNGE
The African inspired game viewing lounge area situated at close proximity to the infinity pool allows for guests to meet for morning and afternoon drinks prior to game drive departure.

The cosy bar area serves both the swimming pool and the game viewing lounge from where guests can enjoy a daily parade of amazing wildlife passing through from the big 5 to the smaller antelope and bird population.

THE SWIMMING POOL
Tau offers a new infinity pool located in close proximity to the Game Viewing Lounge, with stunning views of the amazing wildlife passing through from the Big 5 to the smaller antelope and birdlife.

We also have the relaxing plunge pool situated at the main lodge area, for those guests who prefer to sit around the pool and enjoy their drinks with a spectacular view of the waterhole.

CONFERENCE CENTRE
The main hall of this South African conference venue (270m2 in total) is made up of three sub-halls, each of which can operate independently or together via a touch-screen control system. (11m x 7.6 m each)

High quality, strategically placed equipment has been installed in the 3 sub-halls and all systems have been integrated and configured to maximize performance and enhance aesthetic qualities.

THE SHOP
Our curio shop is situated at the entrance of the lodge and is one of the first lodge features one will notice on arrival when walking through to the reception and entrance hall.

Once you are comfortable and have more or less settled into your new home we encourage you to have a good look around and discover some delightful items created by skilled craftsmen, traditional ornaments or handcrafted jewellery as well as useful safari gear.

Unique items of memorabilia are also on sale carrying the Tau Game lodge logo as a reminder of your African safari; making the bush memories linger long after your return back home.

We also offer elegant fashion inspired by the beauty of the bush as well as quality outdoor gear, such as peak caps or broad brimmed hats. Guests can purchase anything from either child and/or adult clothing, through to postcards, batteries, wild animal “soft” toys and books.

THE KIDS CLUB
Children aged 0-2 years sharing with parents stay free and baby-sitting services are on offer at an extra charge.

Children aged 3 to 5 years automatically become members of the Tau Cubz Club, which is great fun and works best over school holidays,. It includes a short game drive after breakfast just for the kids. After their game drive, children are entertained with treasure hunts and arts and crafts activities.

The children are provided with their own Cubz Club backpacks, which are filled with a wildlife activity booklet, which includes an animal sticker checklist, a deputy ranger sticker badge and certificate, (which is signed off by their personal ranger) as well as a special Tau T-shirt.

Additional Cubz entertainment options are for sale in the Tau Curio Shop, including a wide variety of children’s goods. These items also make for ideal children’s gifts.

The Cubz Club is especially welcomed by families visiting during school holidays, providing parents the opportunity to enjoy some adult safari time, knowing the kids are well taken care of as well as stimulated and entertained.

The bush is the ideal environment in which families can share relaxation time together, provided they are disciplined and respect the rules of the bush. Tau is discreetly electrically fenced around the living area for added safety.

A playroom is also reserved for children’s arts and crafts and other supervised activities. The chef offers additional child-friendly food to complement the adult meals, including plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Children between 6 and 11 years old can join the adult safaris, they will however also be issued with a special Cubz Club activity booklet and are welcome to join their siblings during the Cubz club activities.

MADIKWE GAME RESERVE
Madikwe Game Reserve is currently the country’s fourth largest game reserve. It is situated in the North West Province and is bordered by Botswana in the north, the spectacular Dwarsberg Mountains to the south, the Marico river to the east.

Madikwe, a South African private game reserve created in 1991 from 75,000 ha of farmland, which had been extensively degraded by overgrazing, was chosen as the site of Operation Phoenix.

The government-sponsored, biggest-ever game- relocation programme in Africa involved re-stocking and conserving flora and wildlife, which had long since disappeared from the region.

Ten thousand animals of 27 major species, including wild dog, cheetah, lion, white and black rhino, buffalo and elephant, have been re-introduced to the Madikwe Game Reserve over a six year period with animals coming from various reserves and breeding centres and game viewing is now at its prime.

Northwest Parks Board (formerly Bop Parks) has adhered to a strict policy of introducing only those species, which once occurred in the area). Madikwe is run as a three-way partnership between the State, the local communities and the private sector.

Madikwe, therefore, should not be looked at as solely a protected area or tourism destination, the reserve acts as a major social and economic core and engine around which the development of the region can be based.

The name of Operation Phoenix is appropriate: like the mythical bird that burnt itself to a crisp on the pyre and then rose from the ashes to live again with new vigor, nature has regained a stronghold on the land and the programme has been hugely successful.

GAME WALKS
Please note that game walks can only be done with guests aged between 16 – 60 years old and that should you have a pre-existing medical condition, a doctors certificate is required to confirm that you are able to do the walk.

THE TAU FOUNDATION
Contribute to the Tau Foundation. Donate, pledge, fundDonate to our current project, online via GoFundMe. Madikwe has the distinction of being one of the few game reserves in the world to be proclaimed purely on the grounds of being the most appropriate and sustainable land use for an area.

It further represents an extension to this philosophy in that it is run as a joint venture between the state, the private sector and local communities. The aim being, to wherever possible, involve the local community in wealth creation through tourism, skills and training and to involve the local communities directly in the benefits of wildlife tourism and the protection of the natural environment.

In line with this philosophy, the founder (Robert Gerard), set up the Tau Foundation to fund the community project and encouraged his overseas business visitors to contribute and make donations towards this non profit organisation.

Since its inception The Tau Foundation, driven by Tau’s Director, has implemented a number of impressive projects in the local Supingstad community and we are proud of what the Tau Foundation has achieved so far.

The social responsibility programme is delivering tangible results at the various local schools. This includes the fencing and safe keeping of the school properties and upgrading of the school sports fields and play grounds.

THE TAU TREE FUND
The Tau Tree Fund is aimed at giving our guests an opportunity to contribute back to the environment. With trees now days being a precious, renewable, natural resource it has become of growing importance to plant more indigenous trees. Especially the more endangered species, trees such as the Maroela (Sclerocarya birrea subsp. caffra).

We have also managed to acquire eight Bushveld Red Balloon trees (Erythrophysa traansvaalensis). These trees are extremely rare and less than 50 of them are known of in the greater Madikwe area. So far we have planted over 50 trees in and around the Tau Lodge area.

With the ever-growing pressure that is put on the environment by man, and domestic and wild animals, it is essential that we start making a concerted effort to conserve our natural surroundings. The Tau Tree Fund was started to allow visitors to the Tau Game Lodge the opportunity to plant protected tree species and to learn a little about the trees that they are planting.
Information supplied to the guests includes the medicinal purposes, African folklore, natural habitat, ecology, animal and plant relationships etc, of their chosen tree.

There is a selection of indigenous trees to choose from. At the moment we have a variety of tree species to choose from, but as the fund grows we will be able to increase the amount of species we are able to purchase. Basically how it works is that the guests can choose what tree they wish to plant.

The guests and their guide will choose a suitable area to plant it and dig the hole. A photo is taken to document the guest involvement in planting the tree and placed in a photo album, which has its home on a stand in the main lodge.

There is also a plaque that states the name/s of the people that planted the tree, the tree species and the date it was planted, which is added to a board above the photo album. The fund is open to other lodges in Madikwe and anyone else who would want to plant a tree in the reserve.

We are working closely with the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry and our supplying nurseries, so that from time to time when the trees seed, they are able to collect seeds for further regeneration.

The Kosher chef and supervisor will serve 3 meals a day. The new kitchen is exclusively for Kosher use; is segregated for meat and milk and will remain locked when not in use.

PILANESBERG NATIONAL PARK
The crater of a long extinct volcano is the setting of Ivory Tree Game Lodge in Pilanesberg Game Reserve – a fascinating alkaline complex produced by volcanic eruptions some 1300 million years ago. Pilanesberg Game Reserve is one of the largest volcanic complexes of its kind in the world. Its rare rock types and structure make it a unique geological feature.

The area is fringed by three concentric ridges or rings of hills – the formation rises from the surrounding plains like a bubble. The structure of the park is termed the “Pilanesberg Game Reserve Alkaline Ring Complex”. Ancient, even by geological time scales, this extinct volcano is the most perfect example of an alkaline ring complex.

Unlike any other large park, unique overlaps of mammals, birds and vegetation occur because of this transition zone. Springbok, brown hyena, the red eyed bulbul, and camel thorn trees usually found in arid areas are found cohabitation with moist-area-limited impala, black eyed bulbul and Cape chestnut trees.

BIG 5 SAFARI EXPERIENCE

Rooms
We have six well appointed en suite rooms. Four of them have private verandas, one has a lovely water feature with another having a small private garden.

Whilst all our rooms are part of the main lodge, so there are no unnecessary long walks backward and forward , guest privacy is not impacted in any way. The rooms are tastefully furnished with percale bed linen and fluffy towels.

All rooms are equipped with air conditioners, separate fan, hair dryer, safe, coffee and tea making facility, homemade biscuits, gowns and slippers. The bathroom has a separate bath and shower along with a variety of toiletries.

Spoil yourself in a candlelit bath with handmade bubbles and not feel guilty. We recycle all our water through a grey water system which is then used to water the lodge lawn and to top up the waterhole. We have 220v electricity, cell phone signal and complimentary WiFi should you need to stay in touch with the outside world.

To remain small and intimate we normally book no more than ten guests at one time. However, we are most happy to book slightly larger groups if we can accommodate your desired rooming configurations.

Meals
Our Chefs, who together create a wonderful culinary repertoire, whether it is breakfast in the garden, afternoon tea packed with treats or a fire-lit dinner in the boma under the stars. We try as much as possible to accommodate all dietary requirements.

Facilities
Enjoy relaxing in the large, shaded garden overlooking the best waterhole in Madikwe. Lounge at the pool while our staff take care of your every need. Enjoy a friendly game of cricket, rugby or soccer on the lawn.

Two game drives are conducted daily under the expert care of our guide. You can also take a walk through our private nature trail which is within the electrified boundaries of camp.

Underground Hide

The hide at The Bush House is the first and original underground hide built in Madikwe. Spending time in the hide is an incredibly exciting way to view all species of animals and birds as they come to drink at the edge of the floodlit waterhole.

Photographic opportunities are endless, irrespective of whether you are using your phone’s camera, state of the art equipment or something in-between. You may have the awe-inspiring opportunity to watch as elephants pass by close enough to touch, to watch them drink at an arm’s length away or to be splashed by a mischievous youngster.

The roof of the hide is just above ground level and is reinforced to carry the weight of any elephant that may wander across the top.

The Underground Hide is accessed from a path within the lodge garden, or from the swimming pool, so guests can safely walk along the walkway and into the tunnel without being seen by the animals, and in complete safety.

The front of the hide has an expanded metal grid which stays completely open and out of sight but can be quickly dropped if anyone is feeling nervous. The pathways, tunnel and hide are all lit at night so are available for guest use 24 hours a day.

There is a ramp to assist with ease of access and there is no charge for use of the hide. Small and large bean bags are available for guest use in camp.

Motswiri Private Safari Lodge, situated in the western side of the 75 000 hectare, Big Five, malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve in the North West Province.

As its name suggests, Motswiri Private Safari Lodge is an exclusive lodge offering guests a personal bush experience, which is impossible to replicate in larger concerns.

The lodge offer some of the best views in Madikwe as well as the tranquil feeling given by the mature trees (mostly Leadwoods) under which the lodge’s main building, five luxury bush villas and the Luxury Family Villa nestle.

Motswiri luxurious accommodation, consist of the 5 Luxury Bush Villas and a private Luxury Family Villa. Our spacious Luxury Bush Villas each boasts large bedrooms, private deck with stunning views, en-suite bathrooms with large corner baths, private toilet, double basins and a private outside shower.

LUXURY FAMILY VILLA
Our Luxury Family Villa offer three rooms each with their own air-conditioning, private en-suite bathrooms and outside showers. Further to this the Family Villa offers guest a private lounge area leading out onto a private deck and plunge pool.

FACILITIES
The exquisitely appointed main lodge offers separate lounge, dining and lounge bar facilities – each with its own roaring fireplace in winter.

At the main area of the lodge enjoy the rim-flow pool overlooking the active waterhole, have a cocktail under the shade of the Motswiri trees (Leadwood in Tswana) on the main deck or just while away the day in the outside lounge and bar area.

Fine cuisine is served in the dining room, under the Leadwood or around a roaring fire in the boma. Our staff offer personal service in a relaxed but professional manner.

MADIKWE GAME RESERVE

The 75 000-hectare Madikwe Game Reserve is located in the North West Province of South Africa. Prior to its establishment in 1991, most of the land consisted of cattle farms.

Since 1991, the park has undergone an intensive phase of development as a premier game reserve, and this included an extensive restocking programme with game species that historically occurred in the region.

Madikwe is managed by the North West Parks and Tourism Board (NWPTB), which was formerly the Bophuthatswana National Parks, a conservation organisation that is world-renowned for its pioneering approach to people-based wildlife conservation which it has practised since the late 1970s.

Unlike almost all state-owned game reserves in Africa, the approach towards conservation that has been adopted at Madikwe puts the needs of people before that of wildlife and conservation.

It is believed by the Board that if conservation is to succeed in developing countries such as South Africa, then local communities and individuals must benefit significantly from wildlife conservation and related activities.

If local communities and the region as a whole can benefit through jobs and business opportunities that are created or generated, then firm support for protected areas will be achieved and important conservation objectives will be met almost as a secondary or spin-off benefit.

Madikwe is run as a three-way partnership between the state (represented by the Board), local communities and the private sector. Without doubt, it is the private sector on which the entire project ultimately depends.

The private sector develops and manages a variety of tourism developments and activities in the park. A portion of the revenue generated is paid to the Board in concession fees.

These concession fees are used partly to maintain the conservation infrastructure and game stocks in the park, which underpin the private sector’s investments and operations. A portion of the concession fees is also paid to local communities to help finance a variety of community-based development projects.

In addition to community projects, communities also benefit from jobs and business opportunities that are created both within and outside the park. This in turn further stimulates the local and regional economy.

This partnership, therefore, is of benefit to all parties involved. Conservation objectives are met, the private sector generates profits, jobs and businesses are created, communities are developed and valuable foreign exchange is brought into the country.

Madikwe, therefore, should not be viewed solely as a protected area or tourism destination, in reality the park acts as a major social and economic core and engine around which the development of the entire region can be based.

It is strongly believed that the approach being practised in Madikwe will have significant beneficial impacts on both local and regional economies, as well as greatly contribute towards the overall improvement in the quality of life of largely disadvantaged, rural communities.

People-based wildlife conservation, therefore, should be considered as a viable development option elsewhere in South Africa and in developing countries in general. It is particularly relevant in rural areas where development options are often very limited.

In this respect, it is believed that people-based conservation offers the only long-term successful approach to wildlife conservation in South and southern Africa, and the continent of Africa as a whole.

SAFARIS
Twice daily game drives/safaris are conducted by our rangers whose superb bush knowledge is imparted in the manner best suited to the bush knowledge of the guests on the specially designed landcruiser game viewing vehicle.

Traversing on the full 75000 hectares the Madikwe Game Reserve has become known to offer some the best game viewing in South Africa. Experience excellent general game, stunning bird life and regular sighting of the sought after “Big 5” – Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Buffalo, Black and White Rhino.
