Cacao and Chocolate Processing
Walk amidst thou­sands of chocol­ate (cacao) trees as you learn about this sus­tain­able trop­ical forest crop, nat­ive to the Amer­icas, which thrives under the jungle can­opy in com­post-rich soil entirely free of pesti­cides and fer­til­izers.

It’s a favored food of White-faced capuchin and Western Night Mon­keys who romp through the groves feast­ing on the pods. Unsur­pris­ingly, chocol­ate works its way into many of our dishes, too.

​From the vibrantly col­oured pods to the fra­grant fresh beans that are fer­men­ted, dried and roas­ted, you’ll be able to see up close the pro­cess of pro­du­cing 100% pure chocolate.

Jungle adventures
Some of the best trails in all of the archipelago are located within La Loma’s vast property, available exclusively to our guests for uninterrupted appreciation. Hike through primary forest and visit natural rock pools and streams while spotting Capuchin monkeys, two and three-toed sloths, native frogs, birds, and butterflies.

For the more adventurous, set out on a guided hike across the island, through the stunning Bastimentos National Marine Park, to reach deserted Long Beach “Playa Larga” and other pristine beaches on the North side.

Beach trips
Cruise through deep green mangroves on a private boat, passing by a sloth island, and see starfish on the way to the unspoiled paradise of the Zapatilla Islands. Just a few minutes away by boat, Red Frog is a great option for a half-day beach trip. There are several bars / restaurants right on the beach.

Polo is one of the many wonderful beaches and coves to be explored while hiking along the Northern coast of Isla Bastimentos. It is famous for its cave formations, snorkeling, and for being home to local legend, Polo.

Cave tour
Accessible either by kayak or the La Loma boat, the best caves in the archipelago are located right in the Bahia Honda bay.

Navigate through narrow mangrove passages up the beautiful Bahia Honda creek and venture into the island where the jungle opens to the island’s incredible cave system. Let our guides lead you deep into the cave to explore its secrets.

Snorkeling & Fishing

Our involvement
We’re deeply com­mit­ted to work­ing with the Bahia Honda com­munity to improve the lives of all who live here. In practice, this means a lot more than fair wages and charitable donations.

Over the past decade we’ve collaborated closely with res­id­ents to estab­lish a num­ber of com­munity devel­op­ment pro­jects. Through edu­ca­tion, envir­on­mental aware­ness, heath, cul­tural pride, and income gen­er­a­tion pro­grammes, we hope to help empower people to over­come the many obstacles of daily life.

​In 2011, our com­munity work in Bahia Honda received a huge boost as we partnered with a non-profit organization, Edu­ca­tion is Power, a found­a­tion estab­lished spe­cific­ally to fun­draise for edu­ca­tional pro­grammes in Bahia Honda.

​We also work closely with Give and Surf, who recruit volunteers to work on the ground to deliver many projects both in Bahia Honda and throughout the Bocas del Toro archipelago.

Bahia Honda
Bahia Honda, the bay in which La Loma resides, is home to roughly thirty indi­gen­ous Ngäbe-Buglé fam­il­ies, with a total estim­ated pop­u­la­tion of close to 200.

The Ngäbe fam­ily homesteads of Bahia Honda are scattered around the deep man­grove bay on the lee­ward side of the island of Bas­ti­men­tos. At the heart of the com­munity is a small primary school with 50 or so students.

Help La Loma to continue making a difference
Many former La Loma guests donate gen­er­ously to the Bahia Honda com­munity, as do oth­ers who have heard about our projects. Through these gifts, and through the help of collaborative organizations, Bahia Honda now proudly has:

Touching the sea, Spirit House is divided into a living room, two individual suites and unique views of the sea bay from the terrace.

It has been decorated with a astonishing design, displaying samples of painting and sculpture created by artists from the Portobelo Workshop, colonial chairs, indigenous handicraft made by Guna and Embera Indians, contemporary photography and European art.

The elegant geometry of the building, with its ample terraces facing the rooms, are an ideal setting that highlights the extraordinary view of the Bay of Portobelo.
With nearly 800 m2, the residence is arranged over two floors.

PORTOBELLO
Portobelo is one of the most cultural destinations within Latin America. Located on the Caribbean Coast, it was one of the most important villages in America during the colonial period, a vast majority of the gold and wealth that sailed back to Spain passed through this town.

In 1976, the National Park and four years later, the ruins of the fortifications together with the nearby Fort San Lorenzo were recognized World Heritage by UNESCO. Culture, heritage, sea and jungle impregnate the town in order to offer unique sensations to its visitor.

UNESCO
It was one of the most important American ports during the colonial time, since any ship loaded with South American wealth had to pass through here.

Being the stopover of the navy, it was necessary to prepare a defense system in order to guarantee the security of the town’s inhabitants and the galleon traffic, which has resulted in one of the most impressing conjunction of military architecture in America.

UNESCO, declaring the port and the Portobelo fortifications World Heritage in 1980, has recognized the exceptional character of this town constructed by the Caribbean seashore.

NATIONAL PARK
Portobelo National Park was the first protected nature area of Panama, made up of 86,000 acres, 20% of which are marine areas. It protects both coral reef communities and coastal forest.

This coastline includes important stretches of coral reefs, mangrove swamps, coastal lagoons and beautiful beaches. Within the park is one of the more beautiful natural harbors of all Caribbean, the Bay of Portobelo.

The Concept
Punta Caracol was born out of the idea of creating an Acqua-Lodge in a totally virgin and natural environment. The idea is to offer guests a pure and intimate experience with nature in a place of singular beauty where they can relax in comfort.

Built over the Caribbean Sea, along a mile long coral reefed coast, Punta Caracol is constructed using the traditional methods of the Archipelago: each handsomely crafted cabin is built upon stilts which support a wooden frame over the water and covered by a palm leaf roof – an unforgettable habitat congruent with the native communities of the region.

Natural building materials offered by the rich nature of the region were used- different kinds of native woods and plants, clays, leafs, bamboo, wild cane and others. The result is a warm close-to-nature ambience that takes us back to our origins.

At Punta Caracol acqua-lodge we take the environment and the community well-being very seriously and therefore we are pioneers in sustainable management in both areas.

Here, the ancient crafty construction techniques are combined with the most advanced sustainable energy creation systems such as the solar panels, which are present at the restaurant and in all suites, and gas cooling in all our refrigerators and freezers, as well as the solar-powered coupling of a sewage purifying system using state-of-the-art aerobic and anaerobic systems for micro-processing and sewage treatment.

Punta Caracol acqua-lodge uses a solid waste disposal management that includes separation of residuals such as glass, aluminum, batteries, plastics and paper in different containers for special handling and recycling while collecting the organic waste into special boxes to make natural compost.

Bath kit element are eco-friendly same as the soap used in our laundry.

At arrival our guest receive a short briefing about the particularities of an environmentally friendly acqua-lodge and some tips that may help them having an enriching experience while helping preserving the planet. Neither fishing nor coral collecting is allowed at the acqua-lodge.

Our website´s FAQ gives further information about things our guests should and should not bring along with them into the acqua-lodge. Punta Caracol acqua-lodge uses only a 2% of its 100 acres land for its operation and keeps the other 98% as a private natural reserve.

Socially wise, we are profoundly community oriented. We have supported schooling, sports and local culture and folklore activities among youth of the area for the last 15 years.

Our staff is 100% Panamanian, and they are always eager to get better service training to increase their professional skills as well as ecologic and environmental knowledge.

When Punta Caracol acqua-lodge began operations more than 15 years ago, few believed we could last if we intended to operate with such environment and social standards. At that time none of both concepts where yet having the relevance they do now.

Punta Caracol Suite
The 5 Punta Caracol Suites consist of two stories that together provide 50 m2 of interior surface and 25 m2 in its terraces, in addition to a platform at the water’s surface with stairs to access the green, crystal clear waters surrounding it.

The king size bed is located in the upper room, from where you can enjoy an incredible view of the bay through an ingenious window through the palm roof, while your two individual beds are in the lower room, with a bathroom.

All the Punta Caracol suites are joined to the main dock by independent fingers, except for numbers 3 and 4, which share a finger, due to live corals that got in the way which we decided to protect (each anchoring post in Punta Caracol acqua-lodge was placed respecting the natural contour of the coral reefs around it, after a meticulous two-year environmental impact study).

Luna Suite
Our three Luna Suites , besides everything mentioned above, have side halls that encircle it, bigger front and rear terraces, and they also have a hammock, hanging chair and larger bathing / solarium platform.

Master Suite
Our Master Suite is the best architecture work in Punta Caracol acqua-lodge. Its exclusive octagon design confers it attractive, provocative and sheer spaces.

It has about 100 m2 of interior surface, and over 60 m2 of outer terraces, it has side terraces and another terrace in the upper level, which gives it a spectacular panoramic view.

Our Master Suite has a king size bed in the upper room, and four twin (individual) beds in the lower room and also have a hammock and hanging chair.

You can choose from a fascinating selection of day tours- visit the numerous islands of the spectacular Bocas del Toro archipelago, ford rainforest rivers, visit native Indian villages, observe a variety of majestic sea birds at flight as well as the fascinating creatures of our luxuriant rainforests like the cute sloth and the scarlet red frogs-native only to Bocas.

Dive or snorkel with the colorful fish in our coral reefs or spend some time fishing- wherever you go Bocas will reveal a surprising, relatively unknown marine world.
