The story of that house on the hill
This grand old home (originally known as Florida House) has been collecting stories for over a century. Built in 1906 it has seen its fair share of owners and transformations.

Most notably its namesake, Sir John Ellerman who did not build the property, but took ownership and was the longest resident of the property second only to its current owners, The Harris Family.

Sir John Ellerman was an interesting fellow. Often referred to as the wealthiest man in Britain, thanks to his inheritance of the family business, the Ellerman Shipping Lines. A fierce rebel who married his Canadian girlfriend Esther De Sola, under the protest of his father.

Known as a stickler for timekeeping, there are infamous stories of how Sir John Ellerman would sit on his South African home’s terrace and watch his ships sail in and out of the Cape Town harbour – his captains would not dare to be late.

On the flip side, he was a generous philanthropist – shortly before his death he had transferred 79% of the shares in Ellerman Shipping Lines to grant-making trusts.

Ellerman House then saw a few more owners come and go and when one day it came across the radar of the immediate neighbour across the road, Paul Harris – a South African banker with a pioneering attitude, not dissimilar to Sir John.

When purchasing his home across the road, the house immediately adjacent caught his eye. Paul moved to Australia during this time to continue his business interests, but before he left he told his sales agent that he would love to see inside that house on the hill.

Late one night in 1988, he received an unexpected phone call. It was the sales agent notifying him that Ellerman House would be going up for auction in the morning and asking if he would like to make an offer!

Paul excitedly jumped at the opportunity and made an offer (site unseen). As luck would have it, he won the bid. That was the easy bit, as in the morning he had to notify his wife of their new purchase. Naturally, she thought he was dreaming.

When Paul walked down the staircase from the top terrace down towards the gardens upon his very first visit to his latest acquisition, he felt obligated to share its beauty with the world. He knew that this property would be able to showcase the very best of South Africa.

This philosophy still rings true today – from genuine South African hospitality delivered by an experienced team. To the incomparable location in Bantry Bay (a sought after suburb of Cape Town), with its uninterrupted views over the Atlantic Ocean.

This unique LOUIS XIII experience takes place at sunset where guests will be served a glass of Le Lude along with specially curated canapés that echo the first four decades of the maturation of the eau-de-vies from which LOUIS XIII is crafted.

The tasting doesn’t end there as a second round of canapés will be served, this time paired with LOUIS XIII. The experience will follow with a 3 course meal paired with wine.

BAR ROC

The terrazzo floor and bar counter, the expansive use of solid brass, are reminiscent of the halcyon days of the Milanese bar / bistro; terrazzo conveying both classicism and modernity.

The Spa
Situated on the lower level of the Ellerman House Villa, the Ellerman House Spa is an opportunity to experience true relaxation and well-being while rejuvenating body and mind.

The facility includes three single treatment rooms and one double treatment room, plus a sensation shower, sauna, and steam room. Our therapists draw on healing and beauty techniques from around the globe.

Spa Experience
Body treatments designed for relaxation. A small, highly experienced team of therapists offers a carefully considered menu of skin care therapy and body treatments designed for relaxation, rejuvenation and self-improvement.

Everything is designed to soothe the senses while the body and mind are coaxed into balance. Our spa is open Monday to Friday from 08:00 – 19:00 and Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays from 10:00 – 19:00

Secluded in the lush gardens near the swimming pool, the Ellerman House fitness facilities offer a fully equipped gym for guests wanting to maintain fitness during their stay. With its state-of-the-art equipment, sauna and change rooms, guests can enjoy an energising workout while taking in a signature view of the Atlantic.

Our Technogym Excite equipment includes free weights and benches, treadmill, stationary bicycle, rowing machine, elliptical trainer, medicine balls and exercise mats. As always, our staff are available to familiarise guests with the facility and offer assistance when needed.

Pool
Located on the lower terrace of the hotel, our lap pool is heated to a temperature between 19 and 24 degrees Celsius.

This pool is perfect for guests who enjoy a swim as part of their workout, while enjoying great views across the Atlantic Ocean. Alternatively soak up the rays and relax beside the pool in our loungers with a good book.

The Cape Floral Kingdom
The world famous Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in Cape Town served as inspiration behind the gardens at Ellerman House. The botanists shared their advice, and plants, to help transform our garden into an indigenous oasis.

Our gardens showcase incredibly rare species from our Cape Floral Kingdom as well as iconic South African species from all over the country.

Various plants, synonymous with other regions of South Africa, like statuesque aloes (typical of the Eastern Cape) and succulents from the Karoo compliment the impressive architectural features and blend seamlessly into the garden.

Terraced lawns
On the sea-facing side of the property a series of terraced lawns, edged with aromatic Cape fynbos, provide spectacular ocean views. Sheltered from the prevailing Southeaster wind that blows in summer, the gardens and swimming pool are idyllic spaces in which to relax and enjoy all that the hotel has to offer.

Pincushions, proteas, ericas, reed-like restios, scented pelargonium, salvias and buchus are typical of this part of the garden. In front of the restaurant’s terrace, vibrant lion’s tail and strelitzias make a colourful show and also attract various species of birds.

The major benefit of having indigenous species is that these plants are well suited to the Cape’s hot, dry summers and are therefore extremely water wise.

The gardens are at their prettiest in spring when many of the species are in flower, while in summer late-flowering proteas create a dramatic display against the backdrop of the ocean.

A unique aspect of Ellerman House is its vast collection of South African art displayed throughout the property. The collection encompasses an intriguing cross-section of genres representing a 100 years of the country’s culture and socio-political history.

Benguela Diamond Safari Exclusive to Ellerman House Guests

Ellerman House, in partnership with Benguela Diamonds, is offering its guests an exclusive opportunity to embark on a ‘diamond safari’ to the mineral-rich west coast of South Africa – a unique place of origin for diamonds worthy of the most exquisite jewellery settings.

Benguela Diamonds is named after the predominant current, the cold, nutrient-rich Benguela Current, which flows in a northerly direction off the west coast of South Africa. ‘Diamonds are forever’, diamonds are known as ‘a girl’s best friend’, and diamonds are the purest and most brilliant of the earth’s precious gemstones.

Investing in a special diamond is not an everyday purchase, which is why this unique trip – the first of its kind in South Africa – has been curated as a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Guests get to follow the journey of an ocean diamond from its humble origin beneath the surface of the sea to its transformation into a symbol of love and object of beauty.

This exciting new experience, exclusive to Ellerman House guests, is particularly attractive to couples planning an engagement or celebrating an anniversary or milestone in their lives.

The tailor-made day trip begins with an early morning private charter flight from Cape Town to Port Nolloth on the west coast.

The adventure begins the moment you are collected from Ellerman House by chauffeured limousine and transferred to a private terminal at Cape Town International Airport for your scenic flight on board a Swiss-designed Pilatus PC12 jet or a Kingair 200 aircraft.

The journey takes approximately an hour and 15 minutes, following the desolate but beautiful coastline to Port Nolloth. There’s time to drink a toast to the adventure ahead and take memorable photographs before landing.

Home base for the day is a luxurious, contemporary villa right on the coast, between Port Nolloth and McDoogles Bay, directly in front of Benguela’s private offshore concession.

Decorated in marine tones of blue and white, the villa offers a high level of luxury and comfort to ensure that every aspect of your day is relaxed and pleasurable.

The morning begins with a cup of coffee or a glass of freshly pressed fruit and vegetable juice, followed by breakfast. Fresh and healthy or decidedly decadent, guests are offered a tempting selection of hot and cold breakfast dishes while the host presents an introduction to the day’s activities.

By mid-morning, the adventure gets under way with the option of joining the Benguela dive masters under the water. A current Padi Open Water 1 certificate is all that’s required, as the dive is an entry level one, in fairly shallow water.

For those who choose not to dive, it’s just as exciting to be on the boat waiting for the precious seabed gravel to be brought up to the surface. The gravel runs into a classifier that separates the larger stones from the gravel.

The remaining gravel is then ‘jigged’ which means that the diamonds are sorted from the gravel using a vibrating pan system. The heavier gemstones, such as garnets, olivines and diamonds, fall into the pan. Only then does the final sorting and grading process begin.

A gourmet lunch awaits you on the terrace of the villa after being on the sea. A private chef accompanies guests for the day to take care of all your culinary needs. Ellerman House villa guests will be accompanied by their personal in-villa chef.

In keeping with the coastal setting, we suggest a delicious seafood lunch of fresh line-caught fish or west coast crayfish, depending on the season. The gourmet lunch of your choosing is paired to award-winning South African wines, handpicked from Ellerman House’s exceptional wine collection.

After lunch it’s time to sort through the day’s richest pickings with an expert from Benguela’s sorting team, and learn more about the grading of diamonds. This is the magical moment to select your rough diamond to be cut, polished and set into a piece of jewellery at the design studio in Stellenbosch.

While nature determines the colour, carat-weight and clarity of a diamond, only a skilled craftsman can determine the cut, displaying the fire, sparkle and beauty of the diamond.

When a diamond is cut to perfect proportions – not too deep nor too shallow – light will reflect inside the stone and disperse through the top of the stone, giving it an inner radiance.

By late afternoon, guests are winging their way back to Cape Town aboard their private aircraft. Safely back at Ellerman House, guests round off the day by indulging in the hotel’s signature Dom Perignon Experience.

As the sun sinks into the ocean, pop the cork on a bottle of vintage Dom Perignon paired to a delicious bento box-style dinner prepared by the executive chef.

The idea to make the diamond safari accessible to discerning clients began with one man’s dream of expanding the diamond business beyond mining by taking ownership of each step of the process to ensure authenticity, quality and seamless service.

The man in question is Wynand Hendrikse, an experienced South African diamond diver for over 20 years, who launched Benguela Diamonds precisely to offer a complete service to his clients at Aphrodite Diamonds, the family run diamond and jewellery design studio he owns in Stellenbosch.

Not only does the company mine and dive its own diamonds, operating a private ocean concession on the west coast, it also has its own cutting works and goldsmith.

‘Mining our own diamonds gives us a very exclusive niche in a market where traceability has become extremely important. This not only certifies the origin of our diamonds, but is also a guarantee of fair working conditions in our concession,’ explains Wynand.

To his knowledge, Benguela Diamonds is the only company in the world which controls the entire journey of an ocean diamond, from mining to polishing to setting.

For visitors to Cape Town, the biggest advantage of investing in a diamond through Benguela is that it only takes three consecutive working days to get a diamond cut and polished, and a piece of jewellery designed, made and certified.

It’s a high-end example of a ‘one-stop shop’, is how Wynand sums it up. Recently opened, The Studio at Ellerman House, also offers a full range of Benguela Diamonds for the convenience of its guests.

Exploring the White Desert
The Ellerman House concierge team has been working hard to add new and innovative experiences to the ‘Exceptional Ellerman Experiences’ collection.

In addition to the one-of-a-kind Benguela Diamond Safari, we have now collaborated with the incredible White Desert – the only company in the world to fly into the interior of Antarctica in a private jet. A carbon neutral experience that is as luxurious as it is adventurous.

After arriving in Cape Town and enjoying a few days of complete relaxation at Ellerman House, you will be primed and ready to take on the ‘Greatest Day’ – a 24hr round trip to Antarctica.

Your Antarctic Adventure is set to depart in the African night on a private gulfstream jet for a quick 5.5hr flight. Travel over thousands of icebergs as you enter 24hrs of continuous sunshine.

Landing at the specially prepared ice runway, you will then be transferred by 4x4s to the magnificent Schirmacher Oasis. A land of cliffs, lakes and science bases – all of which will be explored throughout the day.

With an aim to spend 8hrs on the ground, you can partake in a host of activities ranging from completely gentle to as adrenaline-fueled as you wish. Expert guides are on hand to escort you every step of the way.

Travel via private jet from Cape Town for 5.5hrs and land on the specialist runway amid the spectacular Wolf’s Fang mountain range in Antarctica. The afternoon is spent amongst kilometer high monoliths of rock, before connecting to Whichaway Camp – the only camp of its kind in the world.

Wake up at Whichaway Camp and select your activities for the day. Activities range from painting the beautiful vistas to learning how to rock climb on a nearby ‘Nunatak’ mountain.

Your third day is spent exploring Schirmacher Oasis – a rare stretch of terra firma surrounded by the ice cap of Antarctica.  Visit a nearby science base to learn more about the research and work happening in the world of discovery.

On the last day after a hearty breakfast, you board your final flight which crosses the Drygalski Mountains to the Wolf’s Fang runway. Enjoy a final Champagne celebration to salute your unforgettable trip to the last great wilderness on earth.

This luxury 8-day adventure takes you into the heart of Antarctica to see the Emperor Penguins, then on to the lowest point on earth – the South Pole.

After settling into Whichaway Camp and taking part in the various activities on offer for the first two days, day-3 will start with a short 2hr flight across Antarctica, landing at the Emperor Penguin colony.

You will be the only people to witness this incredible wildlife spectacle and be able to get up close and personal with these real-life stars of ‘March of the Penguins’. Day-4 marks the halfway point of your adventure and what better way to celebrate than exploring the ice waves beneath the camp?

Delving into the series of ice-tunnels that are as surreal as they are beautiful. The day ends with a visit to the nearby Russian science base to learn more about their work – followed by a sauna.

Day-5 is the day you journey to the South Pole – starting early morning by flying on a DC3 Bassler Turbo prop plane. The plane flies across stunning mountain ranges before landing at 83 degrees South to refuel.

Here you will have a chance to walk around the high polar plateau before continuing onto the pole. At the South Pole itself, you will have plenty time for photos and a tour around the base before camping down for the night.

After your night camping at the South Pole, you fly back to Whichaway Camp. The evening ends with a wonderful 3-course dinner and champagne to celebrate your achievement.

Enjoy talks delivered by the extremely experienced polar explore staff about the lesser known history of Antarctica and their world-breaking expeditions on day-7. Day-8 is your journey back to reality. Sad to leave, but excited to share your experience with whoever will listen.

One of the best ways to explore the scenic beauty that Plettenberg Bay has to offer is by hiking the national parks, beaches and trails.

Pack a picnic and plan a day trip to Robberg Nature Reserve or the one of the beautiful walks along the coast in Nature’s Valley or the Kranshoek Coastal Walk, and enjoy walking through indigenous forests, along one of Plett’s Blue Flag beaches, or head out to Tsitsikamma and choose one of their meandering coastal trails.

Robberg Nature Reserve, situated 8km south of the town of Plettenberg Bay, is not only a nature reserve, but also a national monument.

Rocks from this region date back 120 million years to the break-up of Gondwanaland and evidence of middle and later Stone Age inhabitation has been found in a few of the caves along the peninsula.

The reserve extends 1.8km offshore, providing protection to a range of vulnerable fish species. You can expect to see inspiring landscapes, exciting dolphin and whale sightings in season, a wide variety of bird species and the resident Cape Fur seal colony.

At Indochine restaurant at the Delaire Graff Estate guests dine under a huge art installation where 1,000 birds become part of the stunning view that the dining room affords over the Stellenbosch vineyards and Table Mountain in the distance.

Called Swallows in Flight, the sculpture is a fitting metaphor for head chef Virgil Kahn’s progressive modern Asian cooking – dynamic, inspiring and something to behold. Indochine isn’t a typical Stellenbosch restaurant. In an area known for its high-reaching places serving South African or European cuisine, Indochine is a breath of fresh mountain air.

At this luxury restaurant Kahn serves vibrant and creative Indo-Asian dishes inspired by the live-fire cooking of Cambodia, Thailand, India and Japan but filtered through a South African lens. It is food befitting of the restaurant’s spectacular views.

It’s been a journey of discovery for Khan, who joined the restaurant as chef de partie but quickly impressed, moving up the ranks to eventually head up the kitchen. Lionel Smit is a South African artist who operates a remarkable studio just outside of Cape Town wherein he pursues his craft in all manner of media with areas dedicated to sculpture, painting and printmaking. Inspired by reflection, symmetry and the psychology of the Rorschach inkblot technique, Lionel Smit’s ‘Morphous’ is an illustration of the duality of human existence, encompassed by the mirrored figure of a Cape Malay woman.

Dylan Lewis
Dylan Lewis´s primary inspiration is nature. On one level, his bronze sculptures celebrate the power and movement of Africa´s fauna; on another, the textures he creates capture the ancient rhythms and primeval ruggedness of the African continent’s landscapes.

Nicolas Moreton
Nicolas Moreton is a modern master of the medium of stone carving. Within the quarried block, he sees the imaginings of his mind’s eye when, to the rest of us, the inert stone may as well be a mere doorstop. His work suggests the primordial power of the material with which he so deftly wrestles.

Sydney Kumalo
It was Sydney Kumalo’s choice of subjects, his conscious decision to use universal frames of reference and combine a wide range of sources, that made him tower above his peers and contemporaries. He draws strongly on African sculptural tradition, while articulately reflecting international modernism.

OUTSIDE RECEPTION
Hank Willis Thomas
A photographic conceptual artist primarily working with themes related to identity, history and popular culture. Hank’s interest in representing photographic ideas through unconventional materials results in a fascinating combination of works that exploit the visual complexities of the not so distant past.

William Kentridge
William Kentridge is undoubtedly the best-known South African artist. Working conceptually from a fixed point and with what is in essence, a very restricted technique – charcoal drawings with limited touches of pastel colour – Kentridge has developed these drawings into an oeuvre of astounding depth.

INDOCHINE RESTAURANT
André Stead
Working in collaboration with Lionel Smit, André Stead produced ‘Swallows in Flight’ featuring over 1,300 swirling Perspex swallows suspended over Indochine restaurant. Stead says the installation is “a symbol of freedom and endurance that describes the innate liberty and graceful beauty of the human spirit”.

COMMITTED TO AFRICA’S FUTURE
We are committed to Africa’s future and our philosophy at Delaire Graff Estate is to “Create responsibly, Give whole-heartedly, Leave no trace”. This founding principle drives many exciting initiatives and innovations across the Estate and into other projects and initiatives supported by Delaire Graff such as the FACET Foundation.

Established by the founder of Delaire, Laurence Graff, the FACET Foundation (For Africa’s Children Every Time) is a charity that works with local partners to improve the lives of children and young adults in southern Africa.

Each guest contributes to our ability to support FACET’s many programmes, especially the Pebbles Project, which enriches the lives of many in the local Winelands farming communities.

South Africa
The Pebbles Project works directly with the local Stellenbosch community, of which Delaire Graff Estate forms a part. FACET provides funding to the Pebbles Project and supports several initiatives, including six Graff Mobile Learning Centres that tour the Winelands, providing access to books, computers and internet learning, alongside an engaging programme of after-school clubs, outings and activities.

Lesotho
Working in partnership with Help Lesotho, FACET funds a Graff Leadership Centre in Leribe that is devoted to improving the lives of vulnerable girls and members of the local community who have been affected by the proliferation of AIDS and HIV in the adult population.

The centre has become a central meeting place for thousands of children, youth and grandmothers, as well as neighbouring communities and schools.

Botswana
Run by Stepping Stones International, the FACET Foundation funds a Graff Leadership Centre in Mochudi offering varied programmes designed to educate and teach life skills to local youth of all ages, with the aim of making them self-sufficient leaders of their communities, as well as providing counselling and welfare support.

On the Estate
Various initiatives and programmes have been launched at Delaire Graff Estate to facilitate the growth and development of staff, and to ensure members of the Estate community always feel supported.

These are diverse and range from a fully funded Delaire Graff football team and health-oriented staff canteen to skills training and access to affordable health care. Where possible, Delaire is committed to hiring employees directly from the surrounding Winelands.

In the Kitchens
We use organic, home-grown and ethically sourced produce wherever possible throughout Delaire Graff Estate. Any food waste from the kitchens and offices is put to good use and converted into compost at the Estate Wormery, which is used to nourish the gardens, and biodegradable packaging is widely used.

Our Estate Wormery
A nutrition factory that never sleeps, our Estate Wormery continuously recycles and transforms leftovers from our kitchens and the Estate into organic, nutrient-rich compost and fertiliser. Absorbed at a slower rate than chemically created feed, it is one of the reasons why our greenhouse, vegetable garden and vineyards are thriving.

With gardens planted by world-renowned horticulturist Keith Kirsten and vineyards managed by hand, the natural environment at Delaire Graff Estate is carefully tended to maintain a delicate balance. Our water-wise gardens feature more than 350 species of plant, 70% of which are indigenous.

Ancient history
The geology of the Cederberg Mountains dates back more than 500-million years, and today these rugged peaks and sandy plains are famous for the otherworldly landscape of sandstone rocks sculpted by millennia of rain, sun and wind.

These valleys were once lush, home to large herds of elephant and prides of lion, while the long-extinct quagga roamed alongside the mighty eland.

The passage of time, and the animals that once inhabited these hills, is marked on the walls of caves and overhangs in the ancient San rock art, with some sites on the reserve dating back 10,000 years.

The Homestead
The Homestead is very much the heart of Bushmans Kloof. During the day it is the perfect gathering place for guests to trade travel tales at the bar, or to seek quiet moments of learning in the Heritage Centre.

Admire the diverse collection of South African artworks that grace the walls, and the striking Ardmore Ceramics on display in the main lounge; each of the five urns is a bespoke creation celebrating the wildlife of the reserve.

Alongside, a well-stocked library offers a fascinating collection of reference works, Africana and a comprehensive collection of wildlife films.

Fine dining in the Cederberg
The serene courtyard is home to a heated pool and on-site gymnasium, while the shaded terrace is the perfect venue for a light lunch, or perhaps a tutored tasting of the wines of South Africa.

And while we love al fresco dining at Bushmans Kloof, when dramatic winter storms roll across the Cederberg the formal dining room at The Homestead offers an elegant venue for a culinary discovery of the Cape.

Dining at Makana
Bushmans Kloof is in many ways a celebration of San culture and heritage, and in the ancient San language Makana means ‘to feast’. It’s an apt description of what awaits guests at our all-day dining venue, where you’ll enjoy hearty breakfasts, light lunches and indulgent dinners.

Clad in local sandstone and roofed with traditional thatch, Makana is an echo of the natural caves and simple dwellings used by the earliest inhabitants of this ancient landscape.

Tables on the ground level look out over the Boontjies River and wide grassy lawns, where shy antelope graze come evening, while the pair of cosy lounges behind each offer a wide hearth where roaring fires keep the winter chills at bay.

Makana is also one of the venues where guests may enjoy our indulgent High tea experience before departing on afternoon activities in the reserve.

High Tea
The decadent High Tea is served each afternoon at Makana, or on the Manor House deck beneath the broad boughs of towering Wild Fig trees.

Guests are able to choose their favourites, which arrive elegantly plated at the table. The ever-changing menu of teatime treats includes an array of sweet and savoury options, including:

Kadoro
The name Kadoro translates as ‘a tinderbox of stories’, and if the walls of this historic cottage could talk they’d surely have many tales to tell.

Today this restored shepherd’s house has been transformed into an intimate and exclusive space where candlelit tables are set beneath wooden rafters to offer an utterly unique private dining experience.

Your time at Kadoro begins in the late afternoon, when guests leave the lodge on a mesmerising sunset nature drive through the reserve.

As the sandstone cliffs glow a deep burnished orange, you are welcomed at Kadoro by a blazing campfire and flickering lanterns to enjoy the last rays of sunset on the sheltered Kadoro terrace.

Raise a toast
While the talented Kadoro chefs create a gourmet feast over open flame, settle in at your table inside where dozens of flickering candles imbue the space with warmth and charm. On wintry nights a fire crackles in the wide hearth as you enjoy an unforgettable evening of food and wine.

Dinner at Kadoro is offered at R1000 per person, and is available on request only. Kadoro is ideal for couples and families, but small groups can also be accommodated.

A rustic secluded dining experience
Kadoro has no electricity; outside, the starlit Cederberg Mountains wend their way into the distance under clear night skies.

Ideal for romantic private dining and intimate groups, a dinner by candlelight will give you a glimpse into a bygone era. Enjoy this rural setting alongside an exquisite culinary experience of delicious braaivleis (barbecues) or wholesome soups and stews.

Embers
Embraced within a natural amphitheatre of sandstone, Embers is one of the truly unforgettable dining destinations at Bushmans Kloof.

Set beneath the sweep of star-spangled southern skies, this al fresco experience is set just a short drive from the lodge, with a lantern-lit staircase leading guests to a mountainside eyrie offering dramatic views out over the reserve.

Departing in the cool of the morning, rock art visits are tailored according to the interests and ability of each guest, and range from easily accessible sites close to the road, to more distant overhangs that require a short hike through the mountain terrain.

Key sites
Of the 130 rock art sites identified on the reserve, a handful stand out for their enormous contribution to our understanding of the depth and diversity of San rock art.

Fallen Rock is one of the undoubted highlights, and the walls here contain a large well preserved collection of images unique in the entire Pakhuis region. Named for an enormous slab of fallen sandstone, deposits of ash, sand and grass suggest that this was once a dwelling site for local San.

At Elephant Hunt the metaphorical nature of San rock art is clearly visible, while at Bleeding Nose guides will explain why the images here suggest that this was a site of shamanic importance.

If rocks could talk
The San rock art of the Cederberg offers a fascinating glimpse into both the daily life and cultural traditions of this ancient nomadic people. Typically painted in sheltered overhangs, these intricate paintings are a vibrant record of this stone-age culture.

The artists used ground ochre, animal blood and plant extracts to create their paint, with the passage of time evident in the fading of each pigment. In the company of our expert guides, discover the remarkable history stained into these dramatic cliffs and rocky outcrops.

Get active outdoors
Along with discovering the rich cultural and natural heritage of Bushmans Kloof, guest can take full advantage of the adventure activities on offer across this 7500-hectare reserve. While Cape Mountain Leopards have been recorded on the reserve, these shy predators are rarely seen, allowing guests to independently discover this pristine mountain landscape in complete safety, and at their leisure.

Tackle the trails
Whether you prefer two legs or two wheels, the tracks and trails across Bushmans Kloof offer hours of entertainment for hikers, runners and cyclists. Trails range in length and difficulty, ensuring there is an option for all fitness and experience levels.

Mountain bikes are available, and maps of the well-marked trails are provided. Or, if you’d prefer some company, ask your guide to accompany you and lead the way. Backpacks filled with water and snacks can be provided on request.

Wild or mild?
Bushmans Kloof offers a fantastic array of hiking trails. Meander through fragrant fynbos vegetation as you marvel at the sandstone outcrops sculpted by millennia of wind, sun and rain. Take your pick of these well-marked walking trails…

Mountain Trail: An accessible walk traversing the ridge just across the Boontjies River from the lodge. At a gentle pace the trail should take no more than two hours.

Ravine Trail: For more adventurous hikers, the Ravine Trail begins alongside the Walled Garden, and follows a circular loop through dramatic Cederberg scenery. Hikers with severe vertigo should approach the trail with caution, as the path includes some steep and exposed sections. Allow up to three hours to complete the trail.

Crystal Pools Trail: A guide is recommended for this walk, which traverses a more remote section of the reserve. Look forward to dramatic rock formations, cascading waterfalls and the chance to swim in the waters of a pristine Cape mountain stream. To make the most of your time at the river, picnics can be arranged on request.

Have a paddle
The tributaries of the perennial Olifants River flow through the sandstone formations of the reserve, delivering crystal-clear water to our large earthen-walled dam. Here canoes are available for guests to paddle and swim beneath the bright blue sweep of African skies.

Fly-fishing
The rivers and dams of Bushmans Kloof are home to the endemic Clanwilliam Yellowfish (Labeobarbus capensis), highly prized by fly-fishermen for putting up a vigorous fight. All fly-fishing equipment is provided, and fishing is strictly catch-and-release.

Take aim
Spend the quiet afternoon hours honing your accuracy as you put bow to string on our archery range. Our experienced guides are on hand to introduce you to the finer points of the sport. Alternatively challenge friends, family and other guests to a game of croquet on our expansive lawns.

Wine routes
The West Coast is growing in reputation amongst South Africa’s wine producers, with numerous cellars conveniently located on the scenic route from Cape Town to Bushmans Kloof.

In and around the charming village of Darling, Cloof, Groote Post, and Darling Cellars are renowned for their bold, characterful red wines.

Following the West Coast will introduce wine-lovers to organic producer Org de rac and Fryer’s Cove, while the high-lying vines of the Piekenierskloof are home to some of the country’s most sought-after pockets of Grenache and Mourvedre.

Wines with altitude
Situated 1036-metres above sea level, the vineyards of Cederberg Private Cellar are amongst the highest in South Africa.

Though these rugged mountains may seem an unlikely place to discover lush vineyards, this challenging continental climate – from searing heat in summer, to snow in the winter – has proven itself ideal for producing unique wines expressive of their terroir.

Our full-day wilderness wine excursion includes return air-conditioned transfers to the cellar, a guided tour, and tasting, followed by lunch at the nearby Kromrivier farm, home to its own craft brewery.

Clanwilliam Museum
Situated in Die Ou Tronk (The Old Prison) at the end of the town’s Main Road, the Clanwilliam Museum offers a fascinating look into the early settler history of the nearest large town to Bushmans Kloof.

The museum also chronicles the growth of Rooibos tea industry in the region. The museum is open weekdays from 8am – 12pm.

The ‘red gold’ of the Cederberg
South Africa’s traditional rooibos (‘red bush’) tea is now a worldwide favourite, and local factories and farms welcome visitors looking to learn about the cultivation and production of this health-boosting herbal infusion.

Elandsberg Farm welcomes visitors (by appointment only) and offers an engaging eco-safari farm tour to share the production of rooibos amid the striking Cederberg landscape.

Biedouw Rivier Valley
Just a 30-minute drive from Bushmans Kloof, the idyllic Biedouw Valley offers a wonderful day excursion.

Framed by the Biedouw and Tra-Tra Mountains, the Doring River here is popular with fly-fishermen stalking the wily Clanwilliam Yellowfish, while from August to September the valley is a riot of colour as spring flowers bloom.

Wupperthal Mission Village
This picturesque mission village in the remote Tra-Tra Valley is a worthwhile diversion for adventurous travellers. The winding gravel road leads deep into the Cederberg before rolling to a stop amid the thatched roofs of this historic settlement.

Settled by the Moravian Church in 1830, the village is known for its quaint streets and traditional whitewashed cottages. There are local-run coffee shops to visit, and the town is renowned for its production of rooibos and leather ‘veldskoene’. A visit to Wupperthal combines easily with our Wilderness Wine Tour.

Lamberts Bay
The highlight of this West Coast fishing village is Bird Island; one of just six breeding sites in the world for the endangered Cape Gannet. A well-designed bird-hide offers a great vantage point to get up close and personal to the resident Gannets, Penguins, and Cormorants.

September – the peak breeding season – is the best time to visit. The nearby museum has some interesting displays on the island’s ‘guano rush’, and near the harbour you’ll find a handful of seafood restaurants with local fare and sea views.

Cederberg Wilderness Area & Heritage Routes
Under the auspices of provincial conservation body CapeNature, the Cederberg Wilderness Area to the south of Bushmans Kloof conserves 71 000 hectares of rugged mountainous terrain.

With much of the area inaccessible, except to hardy hikers, it is a vital conservation buffer zone home to spectacular landscapes and rock formations, as well as the endemic and endangered Clanwilliam Cedar.

Our heated saltwater pool is situated in The Marine’s tranquil internal courtyard, where guests are invited to glide into the revitalising water before relaxing on the comfortable poolside loungers set out each morning. An outdoor shower adjacent to the pool allows guests to rinse off after their invigorating swim.

The Marine Tidal Pool is situated directly below the hotel. Access is from a cliff path, leading down to the pool via a set of steep steps (not recommended for guests who have difficulty walking). The pool is safe for children and offers good snorkelling at low tide.

WHALE WATCHING
Whales are one of the most mysterious and beautiful creatures in the ocean, with many people travelling hundreds of miles in the hope of spotting one of these gentle creatures. Hermanus offers some of the best whale watching experiences in the world.

The best time to enjoy viewings is between July and November either from land, by boat or from above via a scenic flight. You are almost guaranteed to spot whales in September, October and November in Hermanus, particularly in Walker Bay, which is the mating and breeding ground of the Southern Right Whale.

Traveller’s tip: For those with a more adventurous spirit, a guided sea kayaking trip promises to release your adrenaline and offers a unique whale watching opportunity. BEACHES
Located just below Marine Drive, where the land plummets into the ocean, and the sea enters into a sheltered cove, lies Ficks Pool, a perfect spot for a refreshing swim in the sparkling natural, blue tidal pool. Pack a cooler box, towel and book and head to one of the beaches.

Grotto Beach is well known for its exquisite stretch of beach and ocean, enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. You may even be lucky enough to spot some whales here, especially from the rocks above the sea.

The Overberg is an area of natural contrasts, from the deep green apple orchards of Elgin to the sweeping canola fields of Caledon, and the rugged mountainous coast of Hermanus

Hermanus is synonymous with land-based whale watching, and guests of The Marine can enjoy this pastime from the comfort of their own suites, or on a cliff walk in front of the hotel. Feeling a bit more adventurous?

Then take to the seas, with kayaking or boat tours that will take you right up close to the southern right whales. Alternatively get a bird’s-eye view of the gentle giants with a scenic flight over Walker Bay.

The southern right whale makes up part of the Marine Big 5! The rich waters of Walker Bay teem with marine life, and a visit to The Marine means you can tick off the Big 5 during your stay. Spy dolphins and seals frolicking in the water, go cage-diving to see great white sharks, and see the African penguin in its natural habitat with a tour at Stony Point.

Just below The Marine is Hermanus’ iconic marine tidal pool. To access the seawater pool, simply walk down from the cliff path onto steps leading directly to it. Offering fresh, bracing ocean water packed with micronutrients, as well as mesmerising views, it’s an experience the whole family can enjoy.

The beaches of Hermanus are white-sand playgrounds for avid swimmers, surfers and sunbathers. There are a variety of inlets and coves, as well as secluded beaches against coastal cliffs; a must-visit is Grotto Beach, which has Blue Flag status. Traveller’s tip: There are also trails for horse riding on certain beaches, as well as within the area’s vineyards and orchards.

No trip to Hermanus is complete without a visit to Fernkloof Nature Reserve, unique in that it is the only such reserve with both coastal and mountain fynbos – and it has the most species in close proximity.

Botanists and flower enthusiasts travel from far and wide to experience the magic of this place, and locals delight in the diverse beauty of their ‘backyard’. Fernkloof is also popular with picnickers and hikers.

Do you relish the opportunity to practise your swing while on holiday? Hermanus has an easily accessible golf course, in the most scenic of settings, and there are other courses in the area to explore. The Overberg region is a birder’s paradise, too, offering twitchers the opportunity to identify endemic bird species in fynbos, coastal and wheat field habitats.

It was in 1991 that the Lutzeyer family first set eyes on a small farm on the fynbos slopes overlooking Walker Bay – and they couldn’t believe the beauty they saw. In 1994 Michael sold his business interests in Cape Town and decided to develop a bed and breakfast on the site for local visitors, not knowing that soon he would be attracting visitors from across the globe.

We aim to support the local economy in everything we do and luckily we happen to be situated in an area rich in wine production, which is also the Pinot Noir capital of South Africa.

Our primary sourcing area is the Overberg, which extends from the Elgin Valley across Bot River, Hermanus, Stanford and Elim, ending at Malgas near Swellendam. We also stock wines from further afield and a few sparkling wines and champagnes from France, but otherwise our collection is proudly local.

Gansbaai in the Western Cape of South Africa offers the best shark cage diving in the world: attracting these awesome predators as they hunt for birds, penguins and seals. Look these hunters right in the eye and feel your adrenalin surge as you make memories you’ll keep for a lifetime.

No diving experience is needed and you’ll never be more than a metre below the surface, completely protected in a metal cage. We work in partnership with Marine Dynamics, conducting the tour on our luxury boat along with the help of a dedicated marine biologist. Our name derives itself from Gondwana Land, the land mass that existed 240 million years ago. The Outeniqua and Swartberg Mountains that the reserve looks upon are the last visible evidence of the former Gondwana Land after the continent split to how we know it today.

In paleogeography, Gondwana, originally Gondwanaland, is the name given to the more southerly of two supercontinents which were part of the Pangaea supercontinent that existed from approximately 510 to 180 million years ago.

KWENA LODGE
Kwena Lodge offers guests 14 privately situated spacious, double-volume bedroom suites. They offer sky lights for star gazing, fireplaces and deep baths to keep you warm upon return from an evening game drive.

ECO CAMP
Your base during your safari will be in our eco-friendly, stylish tented camp set in a protected Fynbos valley in the heart of the game reserve. The entire camp runs on solar power, sources its water sustainably from a nearby perennial spring and is a plastic free zone.

The camp facilities include seven large, comfortable twin or king share tents set on raised platforms each with a private bathroom and covered deck area. WILDLIFE

Over 15 species of antelope can be found on the reserve including kudu, eland, bontebok, waterbuck, sable, grey reebok and many more. The free roaming Big 5 species also keep things interesting with many visits to the lodge from the elephants and lions!

Gondwana is home to 17 carnivore species ranging from the small grey mongoose and small-spotted genet to medium-sized species such as the caracal and bat-eared fox, to the very large and powerful lion. Gondwana’s Endangered and Protected Species Area is 1000 ha and home to the endangered Bontebok, Cape Mountain Zebra and sable.

THE SOUTHERN MOST ELEPHANTS
Gondwana’s elephants are the Southernmost located elephant herd in the world and the first to have been re-established in a Fynbos and Renosterveld region. Our Conservation Department have been studying their habits and diet in this environment; both the elephant and Fynbos benefit from the grazing and foraging of this mega herbivore. We are extremely proud to have the first wild elephants born in the Southern Cape in 200 years.

FLORA
Fynbos is neither a type of Protea nor a single kind of bush. It is the term given to a collection of plants that are dominated by shrubs and comprises of species belonging to Southern Africa’s southwestern and southern regions adjacent to the coast.

Three shrubland types can be broadly categorized as belonging to the fynbos region. These are: true fynbos, renosterveld and strandveld. Fynbos grows on sandy, infertile soils, poor in nutrients, that are not suitable for agricultural crops. Fynbos is dominated by restios, ericas, proteas and bulbs.

Renosterveld, a shrubland, grows on relatively rich soils; hence, most of it, especially on the coastal forelands, has been ploughed for wheat and other artificial pastures. Due to excessive exploitation from agriculture Renosterveld is critically endangered and only small fragments remain.

Strandveld also a shrubland, grows in alkaline sands along the dry coasts of the region. Shrubs, small trees and succulents dominate the vegetation type. Because of its succulent nature, this shrubland rarely burns.

67% of South Africa’s threatened plants occur in the fynbos biome. This is due to the limited distribution of the species. 596 fynbos species only occur in one place, such as a single mountain top peak, valley or wetland. Habitat loss is historically the single largest cause of species extinction in Fynbos & Renosterveld.

CAPE SUGAR BIRDS
Cape Sugar birds are one of the the most important bird pollinators of fynbos proteas. Fynbos is home to three specialist nectivorous birds: the orange breasted sunbird, the malachite sunbird and the lesser double-collared sunbird.

FIRE & FYNBOS
It is no exaggeration to say that without fire there would be no fynbos! Fynbos and Renosterveld can survive fire in three main ways:

• Resprout after fire – “sprouters”
• Protect their seed from fire – “non sprouters”
• Evade fire by growing in rocky places – “evaders”

The best way for seed to be protected against fire is for it to be underground. Special fleshy attachments on the seeds of certain species encourage ants to carry them underground into their nests.

GEOLOGY & SOILS
Fynbos soils are infertile due to the nutrient deficient rocks from which they derive. The dominant rocks associated with these poor soils are quartzite and sandstone. Most fynbos soils are whitish, acidic sands (having a low PH) that are both shallow and rocky.

BIRD WATCHING
For the avid birdwatcher, there is no other area in Africa like the Western Cape that offers such a high level of endemism in such an accessible setting. The province is well known among international and local birders alike for the remarkable array of birds that is found here and nowhere else in the world: a staggering 42 of South Africa’s 53 endemic bird species occur in the Western Cape.

The region offers a diverse range of habitats and is home to approximately 300 species of birds, making it an ideal destination for Garden Route bird watching. The close proximity of the coastline and the Southern Capes Great Wetlands allows for species such as the endangered African Black Oyster catcher along with many other sought after pelagic species.

BIRDING
The reserve supports healthy populations of sought after endemics such as the Cape Sugarbird, Orange Breasted Sunbird, Protea Seedeater, and Black Harrier. Gondwana is also home to our special annual migrants, the Amur falcon, Alpine Swift and European White Stork. The reserve’s landscape comprises of open grass plains and plateaus, wetlands, fynbos and renosterveld hills, riverine and sub-tropical thicket valleys and cliff faces.

The array of vegetation types allows for a variety of bird species. Denhams Bustard, Blue Crane, African Fish eagle, Verreaux’s eagle, Ostrich, Secretary bird, Jackal Buzzard, African Stone Chat, Cape Grassbird, Malachite Sunbird, Amethyst Sunbird, Black crowned night heron, and Bokmakierie are all prominent species on the reserve.

THE LIFE OF CATHARINA RAS
Catharina is certainly one of the most daring and controversial figures ever to settle in the Cape. Life was not easy when she arrived, only ten years after Jan van Riebeeck landed, for 1662 was far from being the age of rights for women. Despite seemingly insurmountable challenges, this indomitable lady boarded a sailing ship and made the perilous journey to the furthest tip of Africa.

Upon her arrival, she found that the Cape was no land of milk and honey. It was a fierce, wild place with rulings to match. This being no place for a lone widow of twenty-two, Catharina immediately found herself a husband, Hans Ras.

He was not a particularly eligible catch (he was a soldier and free burger), but he had a house on the Liesbeek River, which he had bought from Jakob Kluten, founder of the famous Cloete family whose name has dominated Constantia for more than two hundred years.

Once the wedding knot was tied, Catharina’s life took on dramatic overtones, which marked its course from that day forward. Two wagons left the ceremony, with the bride and groom in one and the guests in the other.

Lit from within by good Cape wine and overcome, no doubt, by the spirit of the occasion, the drivers decided to race one another back to Rondebosch. While the guests clung fearfully to their seats, praying to heaven with truly Protestant fervour, the wagons vied for position and as the road was rough and narrow, a collision soon occurred.

Enraged at this conduct on his wedding day, the bridegroom jumped down from his seat and soon became entangled in a fight, receiving a knife thrust, which almost proved fatal – the weapon breaking in two between his ribs.

He survived this incident and lived to father several children, but came to an unfortunate end when he was killed by a lion some years later. Legend has it that Catharina grabbed a gun, leapt upon her horse and gave chase, hunting down and shooting the offending lion the very same day.

Fate had a good deal more in store for the girl from Lübeck however, for a Tribesman murdered her next husband and his successor was trampled by an elephant. Seemingly no less endowed with energy than Henry VIII, who surprised all Europe with his impressive total of six wives, Catharina then took unto herself a fifth husband, a hardy German named Matthys Michelse.

FROM SWAANEWEIDE TO STEENBERG
In 1682 Catharina Michelse, also known as The Widow Ras, asked Simon van der Stel for a portion of ground at the foot of the Ou Kaapse Weg and he agreed to lease 25 Morgen to her.

After he became the owner of Groot Constantia in 1685, she asked him for a legal title deed and a mandate was granted to her in 1688 to “cultivate, to plough and to sow and also to possess the farm below the stone mountain.” This is how what we now know as Steenberg came into the possession of our famed founder.

The farm’s original name was ‘Swaaneweide’ – The Feeding Place of Swans. Catharina, perhaps overcome by nostalgia for the swans of her native Lübeck Germany, mistook the area’s spur-winged geese for swans. These geese still roam freely on the estate, harking back to Catharina’s day.

According to Baron von Rheede, who visited the farm and was served a luncheon of “radishes and freshly baked bread and beautiful cabbages”, Catharina was a fiercely independent woman, “riding bare-back like an Indian and her children resembling Brazilian cannibals!”

In 1695 Frederik Russouw bought the farm. There to witness the deed were Henning Huising (owner of Meerlust and uncle to Adam Tas) and Hugo Goyes. Russouw was a powerful and wealthy member of the Burger Council and it was he who built the new U-shaped house in 1695. He also made the first wines at Swaaneweide.

Many years later in 1741, the Dutch East India Company decreed that from May to August each year, Simons Bay would be the official winter port, because “the north west winds in Table Bay had been causing untold damage and loss of life.”

Because Swaaneweide was exactly one day’s journey from Table Bay and one day’s journey from Simons Bay, this meant that many travellers would be obliged to overnight at the farm.

Christina Diemer (the widow of Frederik Russouw) became the recipient of the highly profitable business of supplying hospitality to travellers and provisions to the fleet. When Christina Diemer died, it was her youngest son, Nicolaas Russouw and his wife Anna Maria Rousselet who inherited the farm.

He had received the farm before Christina died and made an agreement to relinquish any further claim on the estate. Nicolaas and his wife had the farm from 1765 to 1801. It was Nicolaas who had the fine new “Holbol” gable built on to the front of the original house, the only one of its kind in the Cape Peninsula.

When Nicolaas died in 1802, his son Daniel bought the farm from his mother, Maria. Due to difficult times and unfortunate circumstances, he sold it to Johannes Adriaan Louw of Fisantekraal (a brother-in-law) and Frederik Anthon Olthoff.

The Deed of Sale was legally phrased and cut and dried and a letter appeared before the Master of the Supreme Court in August 1842, stating firmly that the sale to the two sons-in-law, one of whom was Johannes Adriaan Louw, had been legal.

MORE RECENTLY…
All Daniel Russouw’s children were paid a cash share and signed acceptance of such a share. However the Russouw blood flowed in the Louw children’s veins. Son of Johannes Adriaan, Nicolaas Louw’s greatest passion was Steenberg.

He went straight from school into farming and his three children –Andrew (architect), Jean and Nicolette – inherited the property jointly when he died in 1976. Steenberg remained the property of the Louw family until 1990 when it was purchased by J.C.I (Johannesburg Consolidated Investments), and re-developed into the glorious vineyard and hotel it is today.

Graham Beck bought Steenberg Hotel and Steenberg Winery in April 2005. Steenberg Hotel has since flourished into a complete luxury destination, with two fine restaurants, an award-winning winery, a championship 18-hole golf course, illustrious private homes and a world-class spa set amongst the estate’s astounding natural landscape.

GOLF
Steenberg Golf Estate and Private Golf Club is situated in the lush Constantia Valley, just 20 minutes from the centre of Cape Town. The Peter Matkovich golf course – consistently named one of the best conditioned courses in South Africa Golf Digest’s annual Top 100 – attracts golfers seeking a premium golfing experience.

Known for its hybrid plan, it offers traditionalists the opportunity to ‘bump and run’ (a rare shot in South Africa) in the rough around the greens, and to meet the challenges of strategically placed sand pits and waterways.

The par-three, not-so-short 14th hole, features the largest green in Africa at 76 meters in length. Indigenous shrubs guard the green and the mound has been shaped to echo the distinctive mountain range behind.

The 18-hole golf course was designed to make full use of natural features and hazards such as the vineyards, pine forest and gentle waterways. Its environmental diversity gives the course its unique character, with a backdrop of Table Mountain.

The well-designed clubhouse has seen many golfers enjoying the 19th hole and hosting events. There is a pro shop and the EOGA Golf Academy. Visitors to the club can enjoy the driving range, chipping and putting practice areas. CASTLE OF GOOD HOPE
Built between 1666 and 1679 by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) as a maritime replenishment station, the Castle of Good Hope is the oldest surviving colonial building in South Africa.

From 1678 it was the centre of civilian, administrative and military life at the Cape, until the settlement grew and some functions and activities moved away from the Castle. Today the Castle is the seat of the military in the Cape, and houses the Castle Military Museum and Iziko Museums of Cape Town.

ROBBEN ISLAND MUSEUM
From the 17th to the 20th centuries, Robben Island served as a place of imprisonment to African leaders, Dutch and British soldiers and anti-apartheid activists, including South Africa’s first democratic President, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.

WHALE WATCHING
Discover the Whale Route. During the Southern winters, the whales’ feeding areas are drastically reduced by the increase in ice flow from the Antarctic.

These mammals migrate to warmer waters near Hermanus where they can be seen in large numbers and where they co-habit the waters with dolphins, seals, penguins and great white sharks. Pass through the coastal towns of Gordon’s Bay, Pringle Bay and Betty’s Bay.

KIRSTENBOSCH BOTANICAL GARDENS
Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is acclaimed as one of the great botanic gardens of the world. Few gardens can match the sheer grandeur of the setting of Kirstenbosch, against the eastern slopes of Cape Town’s Table Mountain.

Kirstenbosch was established in 1913 to promote, conserve and display the extraordinarily rich and diverse flora of southern Africa, and was the first botanic garden in the world to be devoted to a country’s indigenous flora.

BOULDERS PENGUIN COLONY
Boulders Penguin Colony in Simons Town is home to a unique and endangered land-based colony of African Penguins. This colony is one of only a few in the world, and the site has become famous and a popular international tourist destination.

Babel Restaurant, situated in a refurbished old cowshed with Cape Dutch gables and modern glass walls, sets the perfect backdrop to savour these extraordinary dishes. The more relaxed Greenhouse eatery, again, offers an informal experience where light meals can be enjoyed after a stroll through the garden.

Grazing platters are also served in the farm’s state-of-the-art winery and Tasting Room, which sits suspended atop a vineyard in a glass-walled structure. Here you can taste the full range of award-winning wines, consisting of four whites, a rosé, three elegant reds and the beloved Sprankel Cap Classique.

WINE
From the unique terroir of the Simonsberg Mountain, the wines produced at Babylonstoren tell the tale of this Boland region in a most enjoyable way. The wine cellar is a library of winemaking processes used the world over, from amphorae clay pots to open cement fermenters and concrete egg-shaped vessels.

Winemaker Klaas Stoffberg and cellar master Charl Coetzee have great fun producing wines with the unique equipment, but these are only used for small batches to create exclusive and limited-edition wines for the Babylonstoren Wine Club.

The farm’s standard range of wines is created using state-of-the-art methods including modern stainless steel tanks as well as oak barrels to produce award-winning wines. The range comprises four whites, four reds, a Provençal-style rosé and a darling Cap Classique called Sprankel.

GARDEN
For visitors, the garden offers the space to soak in the natural Cape Floral Kingdom surroundings. Orchards of abundant fruit, acres of vegetables, farm animals and a macrocosm of pollinating insects make up the botanical haven, alongside unique exhibitions and collections.

Among others, these include thousands of vibrant clivias cultivated by and donated to Babylonstoren from renowned collectors; a succulent house with arid-adapted plants representing the unique vegetation of South Africa’s arid regions; and an expansive cycad collection – one of the rarest plant exhibitions in the world accessible to the public.

The Spice House and Healing Garden at the rear end of the formal garden harbour a variety of tropical plants and herbal healing flora, respectively. These tell the story of the wide selection of herbs and spices represented in South African cuisine.

EXPERIENCE
Visitors can get a glimpse of farm operations through various experiences, such as olive oil blending or witnessing the essential oil distillery in the Scented Room opposite the cellar. Here, an olfactory experience awaits in a space dedicated to transforming the farm’s most fragrant harvests into a range of natural bath and body products.

Other in-depth experiences, hosted by master gardeners, chefs and specialists on a variety of topics, are offered at weekly workshops. The Farm Shop, Milk Room, Bakery, Butchery and Lekker Kamer all offer tasty treats sourced and cultivated from the estate and surrounding suppliers.

The objective is to offer visitors a comprehensive taste of the region, and an opportunity to stock up on an array of pantry treats, fresh produce and luxury homeware. An expansive online offering is also available for remote shoppers across South Africa.

FARMHOUSE
Set beneath a copse of trees, the Farmhouse combines authentic architecture with modern design: refined and moody. A green communal library known as the Butterfly Room contains a rare collection of butterflies bequeathed to the farm. The loft above it has become one of the most beautiful honeymoon suites in Africa.

FARMHOUSE SUITE
A botanical theme combines with moody interiors, incorporating swarthy four-poster king-size beds, dusted moss walls, luxurious en-suite marble bathrooms and generous walk-in cupboards. Each room is fitted with a cast-iron stove, contemporary accessories and furniture such as an extra-length MDF Italia sofa.

GARDEN COTTAGES
At Babylonstoren, the overall effect is relaxed yet well heeled with some of the existing farm buildings transformed into sophisticated guest accommodation. Set adjacent to a 3,5 hectare cultivated fruit and vegetable garden, the cottages are characterised by thick whitewashed walls, elegant gables and hearty fireplaces that emulate an authentic farm stay experience.

The interiors take on an altogether contemporary feel when paired with the modern lines of furniture by international design brands such as Kartell, Magis, Philippe Starck and the Bourellec Bros. There are six one-bedroom suites, as well as three one-bedroom cottages and four two-bedroomed cottages.

FYNBOS COTTAGES
At Fynbos Cottages guests can fully immerge themselves in the beauty of the natural plant habitat of the Western Cape’s mountains. The cottages are newly built in the Cape Dutch style and adjoin vineyards and orchards – ideal for our more adventurous guests.

FYNBOS FAMILY HOUSE
Nestled at the foot of the Simonsberg and Franschhoek mountains, the Fynbos Family House is an elegant, exclusive-use home in Cape Dutch-style in the heart of the Cape Winelands.

Designed to offer families and friends an intimate shared space and the relaxed freedom to tailor-make their days any way they choose, this secluded spot is a peaceful retreat like no other.

MANOR HOUSE
Our Cape Dutch Manor House dates back to 1777. This exclusive house has five bedrooms accommodating ten guests. The interior has been beautifully restored to its former glory, but with a definite contemporary touch. Bookshelves are filled with a wonderful selection of books and the traditional farm kitchen boasts a roaring old wood-burning stove.

BABEL RESTAURANT
Housed in the old cow shed, Babel Restaurant is a wonderful mix of Cape Dutch architecture and contemporary glass walls that makes for a simple yet edgy environment in which to try our tasty yet often unconventional combinations. We have a farm-to-fork philosophy which means we like to serve food that is seasonal and that reflects our “pick, clean and serve” approach.

GREENHOUSE RESTAURANT
At the rear of the garden, tucked away between the oak trees, the Greenhouse offers a wonderful refreshment station to guests after a walk through the garden.

All our food is served picnic-style, highlighting fresh and seasonal ingredients inspired by the garden. Our freshly baked scones with seasonal preserves are a favourite, best enjoyed with a spot of farm-grown honeybush tea.

BAKERY
By day, the Bakery supplies our Farm Shop and restaurants with freshly baked breads but by night, this space is transformed into a true celebration of La Dolce Vita! For dinners in the Bakery, we serve our food family style – guests dish up for themselves from wooden boards placed on their table while sipping on wine and enjoying the lively atmosphere.

THE SPA
Like everything else at Babylonstoren, the Garden Spa is inextricably linked to the garden and the ever-changing seasons. We like to think of it as a living spa, set within a forest of bamboo with tranquil greenery and a myriad leiwater channels to set the tone. Housed in our pavilion constructed of bamboo, it comprises a hammam, chill room, hot spa and gym.

VISIT THE GARDEN
Set within 3,5 hectares (8 acres) of cultivated fruit and vegetables, the big garden at Babylonstoren is at the heart of the farm. It was inspired by the historic Company’s Garden in Cape Town, which supplied sailing ships of the Dutch East India Company with fresh vegetables and fruit during the days when the Cape was a halfway station between Europe and Asia.

But we also link back to the mythological hanging gardens of Babylon. Those were thought to have been created by Nebuchadnezzar in the sixth century BC, for his wife who longed for the mountains and valleys of her youth.

WINE TASTING & CELLAR
Our wines are produced in a state-of-the-art winery and are made to showcase the soils and climate where their grapes are grown. The Tasting Room sits adjacent to the Wine Cellar, offering views of the conical Babylonstoren hill, Simonsberg and the Banghoek Mountains.

CELLAR
We have about 94 hectares (232 acres) under vine and produce 13 different grape varieties, with our highest vines – pinot noir and chardonnay – lying against Simonsberg at some 600 metres above sea level. Led by cellar master Charl Coetzee and winemaker Klaas Stoffberg, the farm’s 2011 harvest led to the first bottling of wine under the Babylonstoren label.

Journey to our underground wine tunnel to savour Babylonstoren’s finest wines. Our cellar tour starts in the vineyards above ground, where vines from various styles are cultivated.

From there, we venture into the working cellar with its array of wine-producing vessels, from amphorae clay pots to open cement fermenters and concrete eggs. The tour concludes with a master tasting of our finest wines, paired with farm-grown and handmade delicacies.

THE STORY OF WINE
A tale as old as time, told in vivid sensory detail in our new wine museum, The Story of Wine. The space is a celebration of man’s ingenuity and the earth’s generosity, and the cultural events that have shaped our collective winemaking and wine drinking heritage.

It details the origins, cultivation and culture behind mankind’s love affair with wine, while encouraging a contemporary narrative of its age-old traditions and social gravitas. Visit the museum at the entrance to our Tasting Room, to your right. The self-guided tour is free to experience and open daily.

FRANSCHHOEK WINE TRAM
Tram goers can hop off at Babylonstoren for a wine tasting or daily cellar tour as part of their Franschhoek Wine Tram experience. We form part of the purple and orange line, which covers 8 wine estates in the picturesque Franschhoek winelands valley.

OLIVE OIL
The ultimate pantry go-to, our Extra Virgin Olive Oil Blend & seasonal single varietal offerings begin and conclude their journey right here on our farm before making their way into your kitchen.

Made from several olive varietals that are grown in the sun and soil on the slopes of the Simonsberg, the entire process takes place under the expert care of our ‘olive oil sommelier’, Klaas Stoffberg and his team: from traditional hand-harvesting to cold-pressing to decanting into our uniquely designed tins.

Our philosophy in the creation of our olive oils – one that unites sophisticated international methods with a passionate artisanal approach – has led to local and international recognition in the form of several prestigious awards as well as our most important benchmark, the approval of foodies who have come to appreciate the freshness and unique flavour of our liquid gold.

OLIVE OIL & BALSAMIC VINEGAR TOUR
The walking tour starts with a visit to our balsamic vinegar cellar, where guests will gain insight into the traditional methods and production processes used to create our DOP-style vinegar, and taste both our three-year-old and twelve-year-old balsamic vinegars.

This is followed by a behind-the-scenes look at how Babylonstoren’s table olives are made in our olive production plant and sample the varieties on offer.

After the tasting, the process of transforming olives into golden olive oil in our cold press process is explained in the olive press. Finally, it’s time to taste our olive oils. Guests can create their own 100ml blend of the different oils to take home as a small keepsake.

EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL BLEND
Our popular Extra Virgin Olive Oil Blend is made from five olive varietals grown on our farm and has a gentle aroma with notes of florals and fresh herbs, most markedly mint. A nutty start on the palate runs into a pleasantly bitter and peppery taste for which true cold-extracted, fresh-from-harvest extra virgin olive oil is so celebrated.

Immensely versatile and distinguished by its golden-green hue, use our Extra Virgin Olive Oil Blend to soak into chunky bread, drizzle over pasta, dress a simple salad or roast chicken or perk up grilled fruits served with soft cheese for a gorgeous dessert.

FRANTOIO EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL
Considered one of Italy’s most noble olive varietals and deeply connected to the Tuscan landscape, our local Frantoio crop has yielded this very special single varietal extra virgin olive oil.

Made distinctive by its intense green hue with a golden sheen, the unique fragrance is characterised by dried herbs, floral tones, almonds, green apples and freshly-cut grass. Delightfully piquant, the flavour of our Frantoio Extra Virgin Olive Oil is distinguished by a robust but pleasant peppery, bitter taste.

TEA
We take the gentle art of tea blending seriously at Babylonstoren, using the finest cuts of superior-quality organic Rooibos and Honeybush leaves in our teabags to obtain a true local character.

A typically South African drink that has found popularity at home and abroad, Rooibos and Honeybush derive from indigenous Cape fynbos, hence the distinctive amber colour and sweet, earthy and uniquely floral taste that sets them apart from the rest.

There’s also more to our tea than just a moment of serenity: this splendid brew is also naturally caffeine-free, low in tannins and rich in anti-oxidants.

While the question of how to enjoy our strong and honest Rooibos and Honeybush blends is entirely up to you – with or without milk, with a spoonful of honey or straight up, over ice or steaming – it’s certain we’re all in agreement on one thing… Tea is always a good idea.

Babylonstoren is an authentic, versatile venue with three spaces. All are housed in original, beautifully restored Cape Dutch farm buildings which, with their whitewashed walls, ornate gables and thatched roofs, provide an elegant environment for a wedding party or any event for up to 100 guests.

LOCATION PRODUCTIONS
Set within 3,5 hectares of cultivated fruit and vegetables, the beautiful garden at Babylonstoren is at the heart of the farm. It was inspired by the historic Company’s Garden in Cape Town and is one of the best preserved Cape Dutch farmyards in the Cape – making it the perfect backdrop for many scenes.
