The Ampersand Hotel’s unique concept is inspired by the capital’s world-famous museum district and the iconic ampersand symbol, which illustrates the hotel’s role in connecting its guests to the best of South Kensington.

From the interior design to the collections and curiosities, The Ampersand Hotel unites guests with the local surrounding area through the five themes of botany, music, geometry, ornithology and astronomy.

The hotel, which opened in its modern incarnation in summer 2012, was originally built as a boutique hotel, called The Norfolk Hotel, with only 80 rooms, each of which had different fittings and furniture. The hotel was comfortable and luxurious and was set apart by its character and distinction.

At The Ampersand Hotel, we take our responsibilities to the planet seriously. We are running on 100 per cent renewable electricity, sourced from wind, solar and biomass generators.

SUITES
Our fourth and fifth floor suites — the largest rooms at The Ampersand — have interiors inspired by geometry and views of the London skyline. Each of these comfortable luxury suites reflect The Ampersand’s British sense of whimsy, with quirky geometry wallpapers and colourful plump velvet cushions.

You have ‘Mary Poppins’ views across London’s skyline from the floor-to-ceiling windows and balcony among the eaves. There’s also a kitchenette with a microwave oven. Space is plenty: There’s a bedroom with a king-size bed, a separate sitting room, a freestanding bath and walk-in shower, or a bath/shower combination.

All bathrooms in our Kensington Suites have built-in TVs above the bath. Two of our Suites can also be interconnected to Deluxe Rooms, which works well for those travelling with families.

DELUXE STUDIO
Our Deluxe Studios, complete with comfy sofas and writing desks, are brimming with botanical references, from the colourful cushions to the elegant floral wallpaper. The Deluxe Studios are designed with longer-stay guests in mind: comfortable king-size beds to sink into, a spacious sitting area to entertain friends, a writing desk to spread out work documents.

The centrepiece of the room is the enormous royal blue velvet headboard, backed by floral wallpaper and highlighted by colourful scatter cushions. Quirky lamps, orchids and colourful artwork completes the design.

En suite bathrooms feature delicately scented L’Occitane toiletries, while a number of Deluxe Studios have TVs above the bathtub — those that don’t have grander, freestanding baths in the main bedroom.

DELUXE ROOM
Our light-filled Deluxe Rooms feature ornithologically-inspired interiors, with deep purple headboards and comfy double or king-size beds. In our striking Deluxe Rooms, it’s the little details that stand out: the feather wallpapers, the delicately plumped pillows, the ornithologically-inspired reading book.

These rooms are designed for maximum comfort — a chaise longue lines the end of the bed, while an opulent armchair stands in the corner. Pillowy beds are supported by oversized velvet headboards, ensuring nights spent in the room restore you for days spent exploring.

All of our modern bathrooms are kitted out with the finest toiletries. Some feature walk-in showers, while others have a bath and shower combination. If you have a preference, please let us know.

SUPERIOR ROOM
Our Superior Double Rooms, inspired by the wonders of music, are generously proportioned for a comfortable stay in South Kensington. Our Superior Double Rooms are a great choice for a weekend stay in London.

They are at once spacious and intimate, providing maximum comfort for evenings spent lounging in the room, as well as a desk to work from for those here on business.

The luxury finishes — music-inspired wallpaper, cappuccino-coloured velvet headboards, cushion-like duvets — mean time spent in the room is always relaxing, especially with the complimentary mini-bar. The modern ensuite bathroom features either a spacious walk-in shower or a bath and shower combination, with toiletries by L’Occitane.

APERO
Apero, tucked beneath the Victorian cellar arches of The Ampersand Hotel, brings a shot of fresh Mediterranean style to the heart of South Kensington. An intimate and laidback restaurant where you can catch up over a shared plate of something deliciously simple and modern. The space is softly lit, with cool white metro tiles and exposed brick walls.

Menus inspired by the Mediterranean’s best ingredients and the region’s most enduring flavours are popular with both locals and hotel guests, who gather here from breakfast to late evening.

The buzzy bar, tended by staff with a real passion for what they serve, is an understated but elegant place to get into the ‘aperitivo’ spirit with a signature cocktail or glass of wine before dinner.

THE DRAWING ROOMS
Part English drawing room, part ‘salon de thé’, this is the place to enjoy pretty pastries, exceptional teas and freshly pressed coffees in South Kensington.

It is here that we serve our one-of-a-kind Science Afternoon Tea, completely unique to The Ampersand. Having won Best Themed Afternoon Tea at the Afternoon Tea Awards 2018, it is gaining huge popularity in London now. You can expect a mix of exciting and curious dishes, from jellies served in petri dishes, to chocolate spacemen and dinosaur biscuits.

Our Drawing Rooms are popular with our Kensington neighbours, as well as those who want a meeting in a quiet corner of our discrete London address. The feeling is both intimate and buzzing, with sunshine pouring in through the large Victorian windows.

SCIENCE AFTERNOON TEA
Join us on a journey of discovery, where physics, chemistry and gastronomy meet in a curious alchemy to create an out-of-this-world dining experience. Our inspiration came from our South Kensington neighbour, the Science Museum.

Here, they experiment with sounds and visuals, making each experience interactive. We wanted to do the same with our food. Expect a mix of exciting and curious dishes, from jams served in petri dishes, to chocolate spacemen and dinosaur biscuits.

This one-of-a-kind experience, unique to The Ampersand, won Best Themed Afternoon Tea at the Afternoon Tea Awards 2018. Each treat is expertly prepared by our chefs in unique and unusual ways. Your food is served with tea, coffee and — if you like — Champagne.

Spoil your little ones to the kid-friendly version of our Science Afternoon Tea. Our inventive menu features dinosaur biscuits and a rocket cheese straw. Our Kids’ Sci-Fi Tea is designed to suit all the fussy eaters out there, while still pushing the boundaries of culinary ingenuity.

You can sample jellies served in petri dishes, bite the heads off chocolate spacemen and crunch through not-so-ancient edible fossils. Food is served on a rocket-shaped stand, with dry ice shooting out the bottom. Your children will leave feeling one step closer to the stars, and as full as a T-rex after a dinner of Triceratops.

Our Kids’ Sci-Fi Tea can be booked as part of a Kids’ Science Birthday Party, which includes room hire, food and drink, and hands-on interactive science entertainment.

This grown-up twist on The Ampersand Hotel’s famous Science Afternoon Tea includes playful treats and fruity cocktails for an exciting dining experience. Our menu is inspired by the neighbouring Natural History and Science Museums.

Enjoy a cocktail flight including Darwin’s Draught, a refreshing mix of Lalani & Co Earl Grey infused Chase vodka with cucumber, apple and ginger; and Marie Cure-All, a mix of Lalani & Co Premium Genmaicha infused rum with Aperol, Antica Formula & Amer Picon.

These will be served alongside perennial afternoon tea favourites. Expect a delicious selection of seasonal sandwiches including chicken with tarragon; brioche with roast beef; truffle and mushroom tart; and cheddar and thyme scones with truffle butter.

But just because it’s for grown-ups doesn’t mean it’s lost all the fun: you can dust for mini dinosaur biscuit ‘fossils’ hidden beneath chocolate soil, sample orange and lemon half-moon cakes alongside milk chocolate spacemen, and also try our expertly-crafted patisserie including caramel passion fruit planet mousse.
