THE HISTORY
Imbued with a visceral sense of history and gilded with architectural reminders of decades past, The Chanler at Cliff Walk is one of the most historic mansions in Newport, Rhode Island and one of the top landmarks in Rhode Island.

The story of The Chanler begins in 1870, when New York Congressman, John Winthrop Chanler started construction on the “cottage” that would one day become The Chanler at Cliff Walk.

Completed in 1873 for the steep sum of $300,000, the mansion was built as a summertime retreat for Chanler and his wife Margaret Astor Ward, great granddaughter of the distinguished businessman and millionaire John Jacob Astor.

As similarly grand Newport “cottages” sprung up along Cliff Walk, the Chanler mansion remained a summertime retreat for the family for over five decades. Prominent visitors of the time included poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and President Theodore Roosevelt. During this period, the mansion became an emblem of Newport history and was known as Cliff Lawn.

From the time it left ownership of the Chanler family until the 1940s, the building went through many incarnations yet was still primarily referred to as Cliff Lawn.

For a brief period, it functioned as the Tolethorpe School for Girls, served as a summer home to Bishop Francis Patrick Keough, operated as an apartment building to house Naval officers, and was even used for a short time as a historical museum, among others. Some of the artifacts from its days as a museum have actually been integrated into the current décor.

On October 28, 1944, while the structure was operating as an apartment building for Naval officers, a fire broke out on the third floor from an oil heater in the main section of the house, causing moderate damage to the third floor.

After the damage from the fire had been repaired, the building then opened as a hotel for the first time shortly after World War II. In its original state, the structure was a 30-room hotel. It was sold in 1956 and was subsequently renamed Cliff Walk Manor, as it remained for over 40 years.

The Cliff Walk Manor was sold in June 2000 to Detroit businessman John Shufelt, who temporarily closed the hotel to embark on an extensive three year renovation and refurbishment to the building.

Shufelt sought to bring attention to the history and original elegance of the mansion, while at the same time creating a luxury hotel and restaurant experience as had not been seen before in New England. Along with his wife, Jeanie, Shufelt reopened the hotel in 2003 in its current format as The Chanler at Cliff Walk.

Boasting beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean, Cara is the crown jewel of The Chanler providing guests a memorable, curated dining experience. Using the abundance of ingredients found in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and farms throughout New England, each customized gastronomic journey involves your choice of an a la carte 3-course Prix Fixe menu or a 6-course surprise Degustation Menu.

THE CAFE’

New England has a long history of locally influenced foods. We keep these traditions in mind and hold them near to our hearts each day when cooking for our guests. Our ingredients are sourced from local farmers, ranchers, gardeners and fishmongers whenever possible.

We believe that the artisans that have been working the same earth, fishing the same waters & feeding the same grass to their livestock have perfected their craft & provide a truly exceptional product that we want to share with our diners.

This yields the best possible starting point and allows us to create our version of New England Cuisine. Our outdoor covered terrace at The Café is now open year-round.

A newly installed heating system, clear siding and socially distanced seating creates an environment of comfort so you and your guests can relax, look at and listen to the Atlantic Ocean waters. Enjoy seasonally crafted menus by Executive Chef Jacob Jasinski along with a custom cocktail or mocktail from innovative mixologists.

THE ETHOS BEHIND THE COOKING
Like pages from a handwritten cookbook left from previous generations, we study, we learn, we cook. We rely on the past and our own global, culinary journeys to experience deep, rich histories with people, their traditions and culture. We learn from them their intense love for indigenous food ingredients and way of cooking. The friendships we make are real and life lasting.

We bookmark, and bring that knowledge and relationships home to our own working ethos, joining New England’s freshest, local and often rare ingredients to pass on to our Cara extended family of chefs, sous chefs, interns, artisans, fishermen and foragers. Together we cook, we learn, we taste and celebrate.

Our Cara story is complete when our collective desires for our passions for cooking are artfully shared and celebrated with our guests and we too, become friends. And then, we begin again.

THE CHANLER LOUNGE
A stunning waterfront destination in itself, The Chanler Lounge offers hotel guests, Newport visitors and locals a central rendezvous to dine and imbibe in. Dark rich woods, soothing gas fireplace and distinctive wall art are offset by sparkling Atlantic Ocean views overlooking Newport’s Cliff Walk.

Relaxing sofas, plush banquettes and lounge chairs offer comfortable seating in which to indulge. Our delectable menu is famous for Chanler handcrafted cocktails, vintage spirits, champagnes and fine wines. A highly refined, yet lively atmosphere with customized, attentive service makes The Chanler Lounge experience a Newport classic cocktail spot.

CHANLER YURTS
Like Scandinavia, Newport is known for its natural beauty and vast coastlines. Our two outdoor heated yurts are inspired by the Scandinavian concept of Hygge (pronounced hue-guh). From the Norwegian word meaning “well being” and the feeling of coziness, we’ve created an experience to warm your belly, heart and soul.

The private Nordic setting overlooks the moonlit waters of the Atlantic Ocean and our 150 year old statuesque mansion. Our staff will provide each guest with bespoke, unobtrusive service throughout your experience in a heated candlelit yurt.

The culinary team, led by Executive Chef Jacob Jasinski, has crafted two 4-course Prix Fixe menus based on traditional Scandinavian cuisine with a focus on game and fish or locally grown winter vegetables.

THE MENU
Traditional Scandinavian cuisine isn’t terribly different in theory than the approach we take to traditional New England cuisine. We look to our immediate region and cook the food that is available when it is its most delicious.

They are paired with ingredients that make sense, available during the same season, grow in the same general area, share a similar flavor profile and then use those ingredients to accent one another to make a flavorful dish.

The techniques applied use methods of preservation like curing with salt and sugar, brining, smoking, storing in fats/confit and fermenting. These techniques have been around for centuries and provide a depth of flavor and a level of authenticity to the foods we are serving.

HOT CHOCOLATE BAR
Wintertime provides just the excuse to indulge in the ultimate creamy cold-weather drink: hot chocolate. We have added two artisan quality, signature Chanler hot chocolates to our daytime menu.

You can enjoy these warm cups of joy indoors, outdoors or take it to-go. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays take it outdoors on our Adirondack chairs to sip hot chocolate bundled up with an ocean view.
