In this building – at that time Tripoli Hotel – in 1913 was found the famous portrait painting of “Mona Lisa” of Leonardo da Vinci stolen, 2 years before, from the Louvre museum in Paris.

The evocative Gioconda Suite is characterized by being the room where the Gioconda painting was found in 1913, after having been removed from the Louvre two years earlier by Vincenzo Peruggia.

In this room the meeting took place between Peruggia and the director of the Uffizi Giovanni Poggi, who took the painting into custody. Since then it was put on display at the Uffizi and then returned to the Louvre the following year.
