The architect Matteo Thun solved this great challenge based on the clear principle of “eco not ego”: The 5-star vigilius mountain resort hotel in South Tyrol was supposed to become a refuge where nature and not man is understood as the “creator”.

Wood and large expanses of glass are the construction elements of this first A-class ClimateHouse hotel in Italy, where exterior and interior merge successfully. A pleasant symbiosis of modern design and comfort.

“You will not be able to create anything more beautiful than this place already is,” – with these words, the builder-owner Ulrich Ladurner instructed the architect Matteo Thun to construct a hotel that was to reflect the preciousness of the place, Monte San Vigilio/Vigiljoch above the town of Lana near Merano/Meran.

It gently nestles into the surrounding landscape like a fallen tree and opens up the view onto ancient larch trees and the unique mountain scenery of the Dolomites – inconspicuous architecture where comfort and design blend together harmoniously.

As a result, South Tyrol’s design hotel literally appears to merge with its surroundings. The whole of the building is constructed out of renewable resources: wood and glass create warmth and at the same time allow for magnificent views into the distance over the surrounding area.

The pledge to nature also continues in the details of course: clay walls and warm fabrics made from natural materials convey comfort, the efficient use of water, paper etc. is exemplary. And the kitchen, too, mainly uses local products from nearby, preferably from organic farming.

As the evening nears, the sky changes to a deep blue violet colour and makes the silhouettes of the age-old gnarled larches appear in an almost gentle, ghostly light. The sharply drawn contours of the Dolomites’ white giants can be seen extremely well in the moonlight.

The vigilius mountain resort deliberately does without televisions in the rooms and suites and hardly anyone asks for them. Lie in bed as if surrounded by nature, protected by large glazed fronts against the capricious weather in the mountains.

The ingredients in our gourmet cuisine are clear and honest – fresh wild herbs from Monte San Vigilio/Vigiljoch, or the local potatoes that have a special flavour and have a festival celebrated in their honour every year.

IDA STUBE
Cosy and traditional, Stube ida brings the region’s history and memories of the past into the hotel. The quaint, 100-year-old tiled stove which used to warm up the old mountain hotel on cheerful winter evenings bears witness to it all.

The kitchen likewise picks up on cherished South Tyrolean culinary traditions: it presents meaty down-to-earth cooking with a successful twist on the lightness of modern South Tyrolean cuisine.

In the afternoon, the ida team also serves up wonderful homemade cakes, coffee and one or two glasses of Vernatsch wine on the sunny terrace with a stunning view over the Dolomites.

SPA & WELLNESS
The vigilius mountain resort has a treasure that is probably unique of its kind. Fresh spring water gushes out of the mountain. The precious water from the Vigiljoch flows through all pipes – from the tap, in the shower, bathtub, pool and whirlpool.

On the Vigiljoch there are some very productive springs that come to light below the tree line at about 1700 m above sea level. The numerous springs have been used for more than a hundred years for the farms, holiday homes and restaurants on the Vigiljoch.

Scientific research has shown that the spring water from the Vigiljoch comes from the springs in very different qualities – from slightly radioactive medicinal water to pure, slightly mineralised drinking water.

From the 1960s onwards, the precious water from some of the springs was transported down into the valley via kilometre-long pipelines, where it is still bottled today as “Merano Mineral Water”.

Some of the springs have a higher concentration of radioactivity, iodine and arsenic. They have been successfully used for therapeutic purposes by the thermal baths and spas in Merano since the 1930s.

The distinction between the inside and outside blurs in the infinity pool: a captivating illusion where the nearby larch trees and faraway Dolomites appear to flow into the water thanks to the large panoramic glass fronts, and the swimming pool itself seems to be reaching as far as the end of the world.

A sense of security in warm, brine mineral water. HIKING
Directly in front of the doors of the vigilius a hiking paradise opens up with extensive trails for every taste. Relaxed walking or hiking tours through the varied woods and with breathtaking panoramic views are just the thing for a leisurely hike.

Motivated summit seekers take the 2,607-meter high Naturnser Hochwart as their goal. No matter what you choose, the numerous inns and alpine pastures on the Vigiljoch await you with culinary highlights.

BIKING
The car-free Vigiljoch can be wonderfully explored not only on foot, but also by bike. At vigilius, mountain and e-bikes (for a fee) are ready for you and our team will be happy to advise you on the numerous panoramic rides, alpine bike trails and rapid descents into the valley.

South Tyrol also has a very well-developed network of bike paths. Directly from Lana, you can ride next to the Adige River up to the Vinschgau Valley or to Bolzano. For the way back to Lana, bicycle transport in our trains is possible according to availability.

PARAGLIDING
Glide down completely relaxed from the Vigiljoch into the valley and enjoy the breathtaking view! We are happy to organize a tandem flight for you with trained tandem pilots.

GOLFING
Directly in Lana near the castle ruins of “Brandis” you will find a 9-hole golf course in a quiet location with an unobstructed view of the Adige Valley. The golf course in Lana was designed by the renowned English golf course designer Michael Pinner.

Due to the rather flat course, golfing here is possible for every age and experience level. The 2,887-meter course demands precise and long shots even from experienced golfers.
