The Salmaso family is happy to launch its new hotel, located in a XIV century mansion, one of a select few exclusive Venetian mansions that face the Canal Grande.
Our Locanda de la Spada is the result of a long and complex conservative restoration, carried out with the utmost care and in close co-operation with Venice’s Superintendency for Architectural Heritage.
A stay in our manor house shall be a unique and unforgettable experience for our guests, thanks to the professional and friendly assistance of our experienced staff.
From the main hall, with its restored XIX century frescoes, you will be able to enjoy one of the world’s most evocative landscapes, the same landscape that charmed many famous writers and artists of the past, who were able to admire Venice at the peak of its splendour, when ships laden with all kinds of luxury goods used to sail along this stretch of the Canal Grande.
This new and charming Locanda is located on the top floor of Palazzo Marin-Contarini and conjugates all modern comforts with the atmosphere of the past centuries. The sweet melody of the gondolas, rowing along this stretch of the Canal Grande, shall make your experience seem like a dream.
Your stay with us shall become memorable, starting with the breathtaking view which you will enjoy from our OBSERVATION TOWER: on clear days, the view stretches from the isle of Chioggia to the mountains and encompasses the whole of Venice’s Lido.
SALMASO FAMILY
Rafaele and Giuseppe Salmaso came to Venice together in 1951. Separated from their families those were hard years of sacrifice for them that would become the foundation of a tradition preserved even today. A few years later they were joined by their wives, Tosca and Savina.
Together they transformed the small “locale” of “ombra and cicchetti” (wine bar with traditional Venetian snacks) into the renowned “Ristorante da Raffaele” known by Venetians and tourists alike. Thus Venice became their adopted city.
The passion they shared for welcoming guests into a place that had high quality in their personnel as well as in the food and drink they served was passed on to their children: Renato, Giovanna, Stefania and Andrea.Today all of them run their own hotels.

The Locanda de la Spada, located next to the Church of Santa Maria del Giglio, on the last floor of the Marin-Contarini Palace, in one of Venice’s most charming and evocative contexts, offers a unique view of the Chiesa della Salute, the Punta della Dogana, the beautiful isle of San Giorgio Maggiore and Venice’s poetic lagoon.
A few steps away are the Fenice Theatre, the exclusive Via XXII Marzo, the city’s elegant shopping street, and the charming St. Mark’s Suqare.
