Owner Rhonda Carano extends her gracious hospitality to guests and wine lovers from around the world at her four-diamond Vintners Resort, Vi La Vita Spa, John Ash & Co. Restaurant, River Vine Restaurant and The Front Room Bar & Lounge.
Rhonda Carano is second-generation Italian-American and a native of Reno, Nevada. In 1979, when Rhonda and her late husband, Don, were searching for wines to enhance the wine lists at their Eldorado Hotel Casino in Reno, they were introduced to the beauty of Sonoma County’s wine country and purchased a 60-acre ranch in the Alexander Valley.
Realizing the area’s potential, the Caranos acquired Vintners Resort in 2000 and the adjacent John Ash & Co. restaurant.
Vintners Resort is proud to have been awarded the Environmentalist Level in the California Green Lodging Program by the State of California’s Department of General Services.
Environmentalist Level hotels are required to have a written environmental policy in place and to meet all seven of the program’s criteria: waste minimization, reuse/recycling, energy efficiency, conservation and management, waste management, freshwater resource management, hazardous materials management, and environmentally and socially sensitive purchasing policies.
Our green philosophy also includes amenities that our guests can enjoy like a walking path through the surrounding vineyards, vegetable gardens and olive tree orchards that supply produce to our restaurants.
Guests of Vintners Resort may enjoy strolling the breathtaking flower and vegetable gardens, or for those who prefer a bit more, a two-mile trail through the vineyards is perfect for a scenic stroll or a vigorous jog.

Chef Tom Schmidt
Chef Tom Schmidt brings a wealth of knowledge and creativity to Sonoma County’s wine country. Although Tom is an expert in formal culinary methods, his skill is not driven by technique alone.
Rather, it involves an intuitive understanding of complementary flavors, textures and colors combined with the knowledge of using seasonal foods at their freshest. The location of John Ash & Co., in the heart of Sonoma County, is one of the greatest gifts any chef could desire.
Tom’s fascination with food, flavors and cooking extends as far back as his early childhood when he used to help his mother in the kitchen preparing the meal for a family of eight.
Tom attended Contra Costa College, studying culinary arts under the instruction of Chef Kenneth Wolff and working as a sous chef for three years, honing his skills in all aspects of kitchen operations and prep work.
As an executive chef in Woodside, California and later as owner of a catering company, he learned that working with the freshest ingredients and letting their flavors speak for themselves is the most important aspect of cooking.
Tom’s passion for fine cuisine took him to Europe, where he opened the highly-regarded restaurant, Topaz, in Bremen, Germany, famous for its small plates of German, French, and Italian cuisines. Years of experience and endeavors have led him to our team here in Sonoma County.

The entire Napa Valley, with towns like Calistoga, St. Helena, Yountville and Napa, is just over the hill, about 30 minutes away.
Winery tasting rooms are generally open to the public daily from 10am–5pm, and some wineries do require appointments for tours and wine tasting. When you’re ready to plan your day’s adventures, stop by the concierge desk and we will be happy to schedule your tastings.
