The Datai Langkawi is a luxurious destination resort that nestles in the heart of an ancient rainforest. A romantic tranquil hideaway, it offers the perfect magical escape and allows each guest to reconnect with nature in a serene natural haven.

Nestled in the heart of an ancient rainforest, The Datai Langkawi is a captivating destination resort that blends into its natural surroundings. Situated on the mystical island of Langkawi, the resort’s lush tropical rainforest embraces each room, suite and villa, with private verandas and breathtaking views. This serene haven is where you can reconnect with nature and uplift your soul.

The Datai Langkawi offers the perfect escape and allows you to nurture the well-being of your mind, body and spirit. Datai Bay is rated as one of the top ten beaches in the world by National Geographic and, together with the resort’s surrounding jungle, is host to a wealth of wildlife, some of which is endemic to the area. You may well spot Dusky langurs, Tokay geckos and Sunda colugos during your stay.

More than 25 years have passed since The Datai Langkawi first welcomed guests. A homage to the work of the visionary architect Kerry Hill, it all started with the discovery of the Datai Bay and a view so breathtaking that he fell instantly in love with the place on his first site visit with fellow designer Didier Lefort.

The magic of Datai Bay is so inspiring that on entering this ancient wilderness, Hill secretly wondered whether moving one single stone would be sacrilegious but realised that the only way to build a resort in this mesmerising setting was by honouring its natural setting.

His proposal to set the main building on a forest ridge 40 metres above sea level and 300 metres back from the beach was initially met with bewilderment. Surely, a seafront resort with direct Andaman Sea views would attract many more visitors? But Hill stood his ground, determined to preserve the pristine beauty of the coastline and unveil the hidden treasures of the rainforest.

Rather than using heavy machinery, trees were felled by trained elephants and the wood reused in the construction. Where a clearing had to be made, new trees were planted immediately.

The construction materials were chosen to align with Hill’s vision for the architecture, celebrating Malay, Chinese and Indian cultural heritage but, primarily, to give the resort a sense of belonging to the jungle. This approach was truly visionary, at a time when green initiatives and sustainability were not even part of the world’s vocabulary.

Since then the iconic property has featured in myriad lifestyle publications and coffee-table books. It received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2001, inspiring the work of fellow architects worldwide.

The Datai Langkawi embarked on an extensive renovation in 2017 and 2018, the most substantial enhancement project since its opening in 1993. To ensure the resort retains its much-loved ‘Datai DNA’, the management once again appointed Didier Lefort of DL2A, the renowned architect and interior designer (who supported Kerry Hill on the original scheme) to lead this substantial project.

The refurbishment included renovations to the resort’s guest rooms, suites and villas and the construction of a newly dedicated nature centre underpinning the resort’s increased focus on sustainability. Our commitment to well-being is reflected by the addition of new spa villas and a health club by the beach. Moreover, the resort’s landscaping has been upgraded to enhance the authentic rainforest guest experience.

The refreshed look and feel of the resort offers guests nature- and culture-based experiences, promoting our Malaysian hospitality to the world and reaffirming The Datai Langkawi as Malaysia’s most sought-after luxury destination resort with unrivalled and unique experiences.

DINING
The Datai Langkawi offers a diverse choice of dining experiences inspired by culinary traditions from around the world. These are played out in unique settings, many with spectacular views that enhance the serenity of the natural environment.

THE GULAI HOUSE
Treat all five senses at this award-winning restaurant serving authentic Malaysian cuisine. Tucked deep in the rainforest, The Gulai House’s traditional Malay kampung house style of decor, with its floor seating (bersila) area, rustic dining tables and subtle lighting, complements the natural environment and enhances any dining experience with its charming, magical atmosphere.

Be enchanted by the captivating sounds of forest wildlife while savouring dishes from The Gulai House’s local authentic menu and enjoy pairing with an exclusive selection of wines. This is a true dining experience not to be missed.

THE PAVILION
The beautiful Pavilion appears to float on the canopy of virgin rainforest thanks to its location atop 30-metre stilts, which allows far-reaching views over the rainforest. The award-winning Pavilion restaurant serves traditional Thai cuisine nightly in an open-air setting.

Created by our passionate Thai chef, the menu celebrates exquisite Thai cuisine cooked with the natural flavour of freshly harvested exotic herbs. An experience not to be missed, especially if you are lucky enough to catch sight of one of the elusive Colugo (Flying lemur) and enigmatic Giant flying squirrel in the surrounding treetops.

THE DINING ROOM
Set beside the resort’s main pool and wreathed by towering fig trees in which resident Great Hornbills can often be spied feeding on the Strangling fig tree’s bountiful fruits, The Dining Room is a culinary canvas on which our chefs can present a spectacular cross-section of dining experiences, ranging from an international breakfast laced with regional delicacies, to elegant, chef-driven occasions.

You will find our lavish signature buffet breakfast here, including a made-to-order juice bar as well as several live stations, in addition to a-la-carte options, and it is also an ideal venue for a quiet lunch. The ambience and mood changes subtly in the evening as the restaurant becomes a romantic fine-dining experience, with candles reflecting off the pool, and signature dishes influenced by local ingredients.

Indulge in a gastronomic feast for the senses and savour our ten-course degustation menu specially curated by Chef Chai, and complemented by a hand-picked wine selection from our walk-in wine cellar.

Believing in a multi-sensory approach to food, one that engages all the faculties and stimulates the emotions, Chef Chai bridges the fundamentals of contemporary European haute cuisine with cross-cultural techniques and the sensibilities of the Asian palate.

His culinary style amalgamates a breadth of textures, aromaticity and ingredients, artfully innovating through utilising a more expanded range of flavours and intensities than a traditional degustation menu.

Dishes, such as raw prepared Crudo served with coral seaweed, roe and onion dressing, are elevated or imbued with piquancy through the addition of aromatic herbs and spices, often picked straight from the resort’s own Garden.

The flavours of each dish resonate like a chord of notes – each note quite distinct, cascading effortlessly in layers, complementing or counterbalancing other flavours in a harmonious whole.

The wine cellar at The Dining Room holds one of the most extensive collections of old and new world wines in the region. Recognized every year with the prestigious Wine Spectator award, the cellar showcases more than 450 labels of the most discerning vintages, directly imported exclusively for The Datai Langkawi.

Our resident Sommeliers will be happy to share their knowledge in a private wine tasting, or to assist you to choose the wine best suited for your meal. Our exclusive wine pairings for degustation menus or special events are hand-selected by our Sommeliers in close collaboration with our Chef de Cuisine. Be sure to visit the wine cellar and explore the range of vintages stored in precise humidity and temperature conditions.

THE BEACH CLUB AND THE BEACH BAR

MALAY WELLNESS JOURNEY
Take part in a combination of ancient Malay rituals that will leave you re-invigorated and deeply relaxed. Immerse yourself in the unique experience of forest bathing, before diving into the refreshing waters of a pristine forest stream. A traditional massage enhancing blood flow, a healthy wellness lunch, and light breathing and stretching exercises round out this ceremony of well-being.

WELL-BEING
The Holistic Pavilion is the perfect place to unwind and free your mind. Choose from regular classes, including a selection of exercises, such as yoga and Pilates, focusing on the synthesis of natural healing methods, movement, and breathing exercises to elicit a sense of well-being.

MALAY WELLNESS JOURNEY
For centuries, the Malays have been practising a natural ritual of wellness and longevity called Mandi Embun (loosely translated as ‘bathing in the morning dew’ or ‘forest bathing’). Research from Japan shows measurable health benefits resulting from the phenomenon of forest bathing.

Studies suggest that immersing yourself into the sensory environment of forests will cause a reduction in stress cortisol levels, moderation of blood pressure levels and enhance your immune system.

At The Datai Langkawi, our holistic practitioners have developed this ritual further, by combining it with other ancient forms of well-being to create a comprehensive half day ceremony that will leave you deeply refreshed and re-energized.

Your day will start at the break of dawn with a sensory journey into the rainforest surrounding Langkawi’s Machincang mountain formation. Be amazed at the early morning views of this ancient mountain before you enter the rainforest.

The walk ends at the edge of a forest stream where you will be led through some light breathing and stretching exercises before immersing yourself in the cooling waters of The Datai’s very own natural, crystal-clear jungle stream; this is the Mandi Maul Hayat ritual, the ‘bathing in the water of life’, believed to regulate your circadian rhythm to promote better sleep and increase your sense of well-being.

Light refreshments of selected fruits, nuts and herbal teas will be served, before you start your trek back out of the forest, across the stream and over gentle hills and valleys.

Next, you will be invited to The Spa for a re-invigorating Urut Melayu massage designed to help loosen sore muscles and encourage healthy blood flow. Using our signature blended oils prepared with local herbs, this full-body, deep pressure massage involves long kneading strokes with thumb and palm pressures to improve an overall sense of well-being.

Bodily sustenance is provided by a nutritional lunch, created around the concept of the Enam Rasa, the six taste sensations including hot, sweet, sour, salty, bitter and astringent. Your meal will be served overlooking Datai bay, at The Beach Club.

The Malay Wellness Journey incorporating the Mandi Embun ritual has been recognised internationally for its unique qualities and was recently included in the top three Holistic Treatments of the Year, awarded by the Destination Deluxe Awards.

The Malay Wellness Journey is available on request and requires 48 hours advance booking. The activity includes a short rainforest trek as well as bathing in a jungle creek, so proper footwear as well as swimwear is recommended. The journey can accommodate up to six persons and is suitable for ages 18 years and above.

The Garden represents a ground-breaking step in the resort’s continuous journey towards sustainability and self-sufficiency. Opening Hours: 9:00-17:00 hours

THE LAB
The Lab was designed and built by our Sustainability and Engineering team. A total of 7,968 used wine, champagne, beer and liquor bottles were used in its construction. The interior and exterior back wall is made out of 280kg of crushed plastic.

The Lab has been designed to host workshop activities and to showcase products from our sustainable initiatives. Guests are introduced to a medley of craft-making skills whilst also learning how these activities contribute towards preserving our beautiful natural environment.

The artisanal nature of these workshop activities is designed to stimulate creativity and will appeal to guests aged 12 and above. They are also intended to provoke thought about the ways in which we can live more sustainably; new products are created from old, breathing renewed life into materials which we often perceive as no longer fit for purpose after single or short-term use.

Activities include soap- and candle-making with more of such experiences to come. Local artists are also invited to feature their artworks and provide workshops.

These workshop activities are a small reflection of a much bigger initiative to be a sustainable business through reducing waste to the environment, conserving natural resources and lowering our carbon footprint. This initiative, called Pure for the Future, is one of four pillars which make up our sustainability and conservation programme, The Datai Pledge.

THE HEALTH CLUB
Located just off the beachfront near The Beach Club with magnificent views of the Andaman Sea. It features a range of the latest equipment for strength and cardio, flexibility and resistance training together with outdoor sports equipment for tennis and cycling. LANGKAWI
Situated on the peaceful north-western tip of the island of Langkawi, off the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, The Datai Langkawi is where you can nurture your well-being amidst the island’s vibrant blend of local cultures, mesmerising waterfalls, idyllic paddy fields and mangroves, and a labyrinth of secret waterways.

Steeped in ancient legends and primordial jungle, Pulau Langkawi (Pulau is Malay and translates to “island”) is the largest island in a 99-strong archipelago. Nestled between Peninsular Malaysia to the east and the Andaman Sea to the west, the island is famous for both its outstanding natural beauty and unique flora and fauna.

Known affectionately as the ‘Jewel of Kedah’, Langkawi is covered with a variety of picturesque landscapes and ecosystems, including lush virgin rainforests, marbled mountain ranges and verdant paddy fields.

Out in the sea, limestone karsts rise majestically from the emerald waters that gently lap the islands’ white-sand beaches. In 2007, the 10,000 hectares covering Pulau Langkawi and its smaller, uninhabited neighbouring islands were declared a Geopark by UNESCO.

The name Langkawi is said to derive from ‘helang’, eagle in Malay and ‘Kawi’, marble in Sanskrit, and some of its greatest landmarks, including Machincang mountain, are rooted in the island’s mythology. Legend tells a tale that the main town was created after a fight broke out at a giant’s wedding, during which pots and pans were hurled.

A steaming pot of gravy spilled, and where they fell became known as Kuah, which means gravy in Malay. Another piece of folklore, Mahsuri’s Curse, tells of the unjust execution of a beautiful maiden and the seven generations of bad luck endured by Langkawi after her death, including invasions, floods and droughts.

The end of the curse, with the birth of her seventh-generation descendant in the late 20th century, coincided with the return of good fortune to Langkawi.

The population of Langkawi is less than 100,000 but its rich history is evident. Modern-day Langkawi is not just a paradise for nature- and culture-lovers but shoppers, too – indulge in retail therapy on the island and benefit from its duty-free status, which applies to certain products in many retail outlets.

Take home a piece of Langkawi’s exquisite cultural heritage by purchasing hand-blown glassware, batik and ceramics in local villages, as well as from boutiques in and around Langkawi Craft Complex. Explore all that Langkawi has to offer in the most convenient and comfortable way by car. Arrangements can be made with our Concierge.

WEATHER
Langkawi is truly a tropical paradise with year-round humidity and two seasons: dry (November to April) and wet (May to October), with average temperature highs during the peak season of 32°C/90°F, and lows of 25°C/77°F respectively. Its consistent climate means the Andaman Sea remains relatively calm all year long.

BEACH
As unspoilt as the ancient rainforest that fringes its shore, the Datai Bay’s secluded pocket of paradise has earned it the title of one of National Geographic’s Top 10 Beaches in the world. The white-sand beach curves gently in a protective crescent moon around the bay to create a stretch of sand that is 1.5 kilometres long and 30 metres wide at normal tide.

The warm yet refreshing turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea make for excellent swimming conditions, as well as the opportunity to participate in a variety of water sports including snorkeling, sea kayaking, windsurfing, catamarans and sailing boats.

And if you want to exercise with a superb view, look no further than our fitness centre overlooking the beach. Those who simply want to lie back and drink it all in can recline on a sun lounger and let their feet to sink into the warm, soft sand as one of our associates serves a refreshing cocktail.

Gaze across the deep blue sea to the nearby forest-covered hills of Pulau Anak Datai and the rural Thai island of Tarutao in the distance. Embrace the sound of calm waves gently lapping the shore and listen to the chattering whispers from the rainforest behind you.

And if you want to know more about the wildlife and vegetation inhabiting the shore, our marine biologists are there to accompany you on one of our beach walks. Last but not least, our beach is also a venue for your special celebrations such as weddings, birthdays and private dining.

EXPERIENCES
Whether you’re planning a romantic escape or a family holiday, The Datai Langkawi encourages guests to enjoy a range of experiences from exploring the rainforest right outside your room door to cooking classes and golfing at The Els Club Teluk Datai.

NATURE
Set against a wilderness backdrop of primordial mountains, the pristine ancient rainforest is home to a wealth of flora and fauna: you may well spot Dusky langurs, Great hornbills and Sunda colugos during your stay.

NATURE AT THE DATAI LANGKAWI
Set against a wilderness backdrop of primordial mountains, the pristine ancient rainforest is home to a wealth of flora and fauna: you may well spot Dusky langurs, Tokay geckos and Sunda colugos during your stay. The resort’s private footpath leads to dreamy Datai Bay’s idyllic white-sand beach, one of the Top 10 Beaches worldwide as awarded by National Geographic.

The Datai Langkawi’s setting, on the northwestern tip of the lush tropical island of Langkawi, is a place full of magic and mystery, and it has millions of years’ worth of stories to tell. Against a backdrop of Southeast Asia’s oldest mountain, Machincang, its 750-hectare rainforest ‘back garden’ is every nature lover’s dream and just waiting to be discovered.

The Datai Langkawi is blessed with an abundance of plants and wildlife. The lush foliage around the resort is home to some of the most fascinating animals, including the Long-tailed macaque, Black giant squirrel, Oriental-pied hornbill, and more.

If you are lucky you will see The Datai Langkawi’s resident Great hornbill pair flying over the rainforest canopy as you sip an evening drink on The Lobby Lounge terrace. Every guest is entranced by the nightly chorus of tiny Green paddy field and Common tree frogs in the lily pond in The Lobby.

There are many stories to tell about the natural heritage surrounding The Datai Langkawi. Our team of expert naturalists and marine biologists will take you on a journey of learning, exploration and discovery in and around the resort on complimentary and paid excursions. You will be able to reconnect with nature and find a deeper appreciation of the biodiversity that completes The Datai Langkawi.

THE NATURE CENTRE
The design of this unique open-air building is inspired by a tribal bamboo longhouse. There is a library full of references to the natural world of Langkawi and Malaysia, a lounge for guests to sit and listen to stories from the wild by our team of resident naturalists and marine biologists.

There is also a Tea Corner serving specially concocted infusions created by the nature team with ingredients uniquely curated by the late Dr Ghani, Langkawi’s well known traditional Malay medicine guru using herbs and spices from plants native to the rainforest. These concoctions are not only delicious but good for one’s health.

An outdoor pavilion leads to a nature trail taking you on a journey through three different habitats, which culminates at the top of an emerging Strangling Fig tree. Opening Hours: 9:00-18:00 hours

POET’S TRAIL
Home to a stunning array of flora and fauna ranging from Meranti Bumbung, Meranti Temak Nipis and Keruing Damar trees to Dusky Langurs, Great Hornbills, Sunda Colugos and shy mousedeer, and criss-crossed by pristine, flowing streams, the rainforests of Langkawi are truly mesmerising ecosystems and guests have a number of opportunities to explore them such as the resort’s inspiring Poet’s Trail.

This nature trek led by experienced resident naturalists from The Nature Centre begins just beyond the resort’s gates (but still within the hotel grounds) and includes a series of insightful poems by Max Wallis, Khalil Gibran and The Datai Langkawi Head Naturalist, Irshad Mobarak.

BEACH WALK
The beach is home to a number of amazing animals and plants and the Datai Bay is truly a fantastic place for wildlife watching. As the tides rise and fall, otherwise hidden inhabitants of the shallow lagoon area are revealed and the Datai Bay’s gentle quartz and calcium carbonate sandy beach gets buzzing with a wonderful world of marine life.

Discover the interesting beach life that adapted to survive in a harsh and ever-changing environment with the extreme heat of the sun, rise and fall of the tides and swirling sand, all in one place at our Datai beach. This activity is only available during the lowest tides of the month.

JOURNEY THROUGH THE FORESTS
The rainforest is made up of four layers: emergent, upper canopy, under canopy and forest floor. The upper canopy acts as a roof to block most light from reaching below it. The under canopy consists of bushes, shrubs as well as branches of canopy trees.

The forest floor is shaded with fewer plants growing, making it easy to walk through the forest. This informative walk along the Rimba Trail takes you through three different floral habitats.

It begins in a littoral or coastal forest before transitioning into a mangrove swamp over a 70 m-elevated walkway. It continues through a lowland rainforest, the highlight of which is a 20 m-long, 15 m-high Canopy Walk up the most bizarre looking tree in our rainforest.

TREK TO CRYSTAL CREEK
Just a short drive from the hotel and a 500 metre trek into the rainforest is a wonderful swimming creek. Led by our resident naturalists, you will walk through lush greenery with a chance to spot some of the myriad little critters that call our rainforest home, until you hear the soft gurgling of this small river making its way through the forest.

Climb down a gentle slope and experience its inviting waters – a welcome respite from the warm and humid afternoons. Refreshed from the dip into the cool, make your way back to your pick-up point and transfer back to the resort by car. You can also experience Crystal Creek during our Malay Wellness journey or Mandi Embun experience.

MYSTERIOUS MANGROVE
Find out more about trees and animals that have evolved to thrive in an environment of dynamic and constant change, dictated by the ebb and flow of the ocean tides. Mangroves are tropical trees that thrive in conditions most timber could never tolerate — salty, coastal waters, and the interminable ebb and flow of the tide.

With the ability to store vast amounts of carbon, mangrove forests are key weapons in the fight against climate change, but they are under threat worldwide. By protecting mangroves, we can help protect the future of our planet. Join us on a journey of discovery through the mangroves on a kayak.

BUTTERFLY WALK
With over 530 species of butterflies on the island, Langkawi is the true butterfly paradise of the world. Here, at The Datai, we have created an open-concept Butterfly Garden with specially chosen butterfly nectar plants and caterpillar food plants.

This way, we have invited the butterflies that would normally be fluttering over the canopy of our towering trees to come down to the garden. Take a stroll along our Butterfly Garden to get to know some of the beauties that pay us a visit.

BIRDWATCHING WALK
More than 260 species of birds call Langkawi home. These species include lowland rainforest species, wetland species, shorebirds and pelagic birds. We have recorded over 60 species of birds in and around Teluk Datai area, mostly lowland rainforest species with a few coastal species.

Try spotting birds such as the Oriental-Pied Hornbill, Orange-bellied Flowerpecker, Crimson Sunbird and the Banded Kingfisher during this nature experience tailored for both beginners and seasoned birdwatchers with our experienced birdwatching guides.

WATERSPORTS
The Datai Langkawi’s pristine beach, azure waters and tranquil atmosphere affords the perfect opportunity to connect with nature. The warm waters of the Andaman sea invite you to explore its intricate marine life by snorkeling in the shallows or, for the more adventurous, try kayaking, windsurfing or sailing out to the farther reaches of the bay while surrounded by the most breathtaking views of the rainforest and islands.

GOLF
Nestled between the primaeval rainforest and emerald green of the Andaman Sea, the award-winning, 18-hole, par-72 championship golf course at The Els Club Teluk Datai, designed by legendary player Ernie Els, provides a grand game experience in one of the world’s most spectacular settings.

With the marbled peaks of the mighty Matchincang mountain range as a backup, the 47-hectare course has been developed to honour its natural surroundings. Typical bunkers have been replaced by less conventional golfing ‘hazards’, including tropical vegetation and streams, and even the holes’ names, such as Macaque Manor, are a subtle nod to the wildlife that can occasionally be spotted around the course.

The Els Club Teluk Datai also offers state-of-the-art club facilities, including buggies equipped with GPS units, a fully stocked golf shop and full-amenity locker rooms, as well as to relaxation areas in the clubhouse, The Hornbill Café, which overlooks the course, and the open-air Els Club Lounge are the perfect place to unwind after your round.

Every element of your gaming experience has been considered, from a dedicated team of caddies and instructors to the personalised engraved bag tags, presenting players with a unique and sophisticated golfing experience.

BEE A BEEKEEPER

Discover these interesting pollinators in their natural habitat and taste the slightly tangy flavour of Trigona Itama honey – the honey you harvest will be yours to take home.

Stingless bee honey is renowned for its antimicrobial, anti-aging, and anti-inflammatory qualities, its taste varies from hive to hive, depending on the type of flowers the bees visit to extract their nectar.

PERMACULTURE WALK
A key component of the resort’s core environmental ethos, the expansive permaculture garden is dedicated to and in tune with the systems and cycles of nature. The permaculture garden is a zero-waste organic food production system with a closed-loop waste management scheme.

Created as a closed system loop that generates no waste, while producing ingredients for the kitchens and spa. It represents a continuous journey towards developing sustainability within the property. Be introduced to the philosophy of permaculture gardening in this complimentary activity which is suitable for families.

LITTLE GARDENER
Gardens can be a great place to cultivate a meaningful and fun learning experience for children. Gardening provides an opportunity to learn the life cycle process by which plants are grown, as well as responsibility, caretaking, independence, and environmental awareness.

Introducing children to gardening is a wonderful way to increase their awareness of where food comes from and the importance of the environment in everyday life.

Get your hands dirty with our team to create a healthier and more sustainable community through composting and planting at The Garden. Let us turn waste into life with the help of creepy crawlies. Proper footwear is compulsory and insect repellent and sunblock encouraged.

UPCYCLING WORKSHOP
