HISTORY
The Fährhaus has a 150-year history as a residence of hospitality on Sylt.
Captain Selmer’s Harbour Restaurant
Situated at the Wadden Sea, the small village of Munkmarsch was the main port of Sylt and its door to the world at its height. All vacation guests arrived per ship and changed to the railway train to reach the other villages of the island.
In 1868, Thomas Selmer acquired a concession for passenger transportation and constructed the first Fährhaus. This wooden building served as a simple restaurant for travellers, but it was not designed for an overnight stay. By 1880, the original building was replaced by a newer one – the still existing Victorian main building.
Friedrich and Dorothea Nann
The family Nann has a nearly 70-year history with the Fährhaus. In 1894, Friedrich and Dorothea Nann took over the Fährhaus from Captain Selmer. They offered “rooms for early morning ships”. Whenever a ship arrived, Nann was standing there with a servant at the bridge to offer travellers an.
After the opening of the Hindenburg Dam in 1927, the shipping lines stopped and the visitors at the Fährhaus declined. Creative as they were, the skilled chef Arthur Nann and his son Friedrich changed the Fährhaus into a hotel with culinary specialities and various tourist offers.
This made it to one of the most popular places on the island. Even the riders from Kampen enjoyed the resting place for man and beast, which the Fährhaus offered. The Fährhaus was facing Demolition
In the following 15 years there were different owners, and besides some grand years there were also setbacks. Around 1980, the lights were turned off for several years. The Fährhaus started to deteriorate and, in 1985, the owner received the right to demolish the building. However, he did not have sufficient funds to build a new hotel, so that the historic Fährhaus eluded destruction.
Awaking the Sleeping Beauty
In 1990, business-man Karl-Rudolf Mankel acquired the Fährhaus and decided to preserve the historic building. Seven years later, the work is completed and the core renovated Fährhaus opened its doors at first as a restaurant.
Two years later, the new hotel opened up with 20 rooms. The second expansion by 19 rooms and suites followed in 2006. Thus, the history of the Fährhaus continues to be a successful family run place of hospitality.
FAMILY SUITES
Our family suites offer a separate bedroom for children and a living room. They are located on the ground floor and the first floor and are between 54 and 73 m² in size.
The suites on the ground floor include a terrace with a beach chair and most of the rooms on the first floor include a balcony. All rooms are bathed in daylight due to room-high windows and offer a beautiful view of the Wadden Sea.

Our suites with a separated living area can be found on the ground and first floor. Each suite offers between 51 and 56 m² in size. Ground floor suites include a terrace with beach chair and most rooms on the first floor include a balcony. DELUXE DOUBLE ROOMS
Our deluxe double rooms are located in the side wing of the hotel and are 36 m² in size. The rooms on the ground floor include a terrace with a beach chair, most of the rooms on the first floor include a balcony. All rooms are bathed in daylight due to room-high windows and offer a beautiful view of the Wadden Sea or the garden.
PROTTHAUS APARTMENTS
Sleep under a thatched roof in the historic Protthaus of 1744. Are you looking for an even more private atmosphere without missing on the amenities of the hotel?
Our apartments provide the ideal setting, as the Protthaus is located directly next to the Fährhaus Sylt and offers a maximum of flexibility. You may cook your own specialties in the kitchen(ette) or enjoy our culinary skills next door.
The Protthaus and a windmill were constructed in 1744 by the miller Sönnichsen, the first house in Munkmarsch of its kind. The family Prott bought the house in 1847 and lived in it for 150 years until the thatched building became part of the Fährhaus Sylt.
Today, the restored rooms are full of Frisian charm and cosiness. Besides modern comfort, the apartments offer a maximum of privacy. Relax and feel at home in this special hideaway!
LOCHTERBARIG
Live in the renovated Friesenhaus right next door. The renovated Frisian house, situated on the mud flats, accommodates up to 4 people and leaves nothing to be desired. Here the holiday begins from the first second on. The spa area of the Hotel Fährhaus Sylt in Munkmarsch can also be used.
KÄPT’N SELMER STUBE
In our parlour or the veranda – culinary delight with a perfect view. Named after the founder of our house, the Käpt’n Selmer restaurant represents hospitality. In winter, the tiled stove offers warmth. In summer, you can enjoy our delicacies on our Victorian-style terrace with a view into the marina.
We only use first class and mostly regional ingredients for our specialties. Selected suppliers with love to Sylt’s nature guarantee a constantly high quality of our resources. Originality and regional characterize our cuisine, which is never short of finesse in its art.
A specialty of Alexandro Pape is the Sylt sea salt, which is extracted in his manufactory. It possesses a full-flavoured, pleasant salt taste and enriches our dishes in the Käpt’n Selmer restaurant. A very special gem is the cosy “Stuuv”, decorated with original Delft Tiles. It offers privacy for small groups of up to 12 persons as needed.
FIIWFUTT
Fiiwfutt is the name of our pop-up restaurant and means in Frisian: starfish. Chef Markus Gerlach invites you to the restaurant with a view far across the Wadden Sea and served to Exquisite fish menus at the end of September.
MARA SAND
Cast your eyes over the Wadden Sea whilst you enjoy a selected three-course menu. At Mara Sand on the first floor, our hotel guests not only enjoy breakfast and half board but also a spectacular view over the Munkmarsch Bay and the harbour. Become enchanted every evening anew by our carefully balanced delicacies.
Every morning at Mara Sand and the other restaurants, you can enjoy our renowned Fährhaus breakfast for hotel and outside guests. Start the day with a healthy and delicious buffet breakfast. By the way – we are always happy to look after late risers.
Our smaller guests will find their own colourful and happy breakfast buffet every morning. We offer carefully prepared, healthy meals that your children will enjoy.
Celebrate in dignified ambience in a private atmosphere and the personal service of our restaurant Mara Sand. The private room offers the perfect location for up to 40 persons – there is always a good reason to celebrate!
VINOTHEK
Enjoy sophisticated wines in a Frisian ambience – taste and enjoy. The vinotheque represents an especially cosy Frisian room with original pots and antique cheese wood.
In this environment and with the unchallenged view over the Munkmarsch harbour, every selected wine will unfold an especially great taste! Of course, we are happy to offer selected meals and finest cheese.

A perfect running trail passes in front of the hotel into the direction of Keitum alongside the Wadden Sea. To achieve a perfect balance, yoga and pilates courses can be booked on demand.

The library of the house is arranged in a clean Nordic style with a Scandinavian cockle stove and Mid-Century furniture. The library offers carefully chosen literature and inspiring illustrated books – a perfect place to spend a few pleasurable hours in case of “Schietwetter” (really bad weather). Enjoy major sport events on the TV with other guests and return to the library for a friendly game of chess.
Our intimate hotel bar is just the place to enjoy a drink with a nice view over the Wadden Sea. Are you ready to explore the surroundings? Enjoy the island with a variety of different vehicles. From bicycles to a Porsche, there will be something for you. You can find further information here. You can leave your own car for only € 10.- per day in our underground garage or park for free directly in front of the hotel.
The most beautiful way to discover the Wadden Sea is to take a horse ride along the beach. Experienced riders may take trips each day, along the Wadden Sea from Keitum, past the Fährhaus in the direction of Kampen and through the Braderup Heath. Our reception staff will be happy to provide further information.
Perhaps you would prefer a round of golf? We have Wilson Golfbags for men and women at the reception. A Greenfee discount of 10% and other benefits are available for all Fährhaus guests at the Marine-Golf-Club.
Your children are our special guests. Besides special menus and their own children breakfast, we can provide for special baby furniture and equipment. In case you want to take a trip without the smallest, we can arrange for a babysitter for only € 15.- per hour.
For our smallest guests we created special retreats. Besides a children’s playground, we offer a hand coloured Caravan. Inside, there is a lot of space to read, create and play with different board games, bricks, and cuddly toys.
Last but not least, if you have a dog, it is perfectly taken care of in our hotel. In selected rooms dogs are welcome. Please contact us! After an exhausting walk in the Wadden Sea, you can make sure his coat gleams again at our dog washing area.
