THE HISTORY
The step from small guesthouse at the beginning of the 20th century to a renowned design hotel on Europe’s largest high Alpine pasture wasn’t easy – but our Hotel Urthaler made it. For some four generations, we, the Urthaler family, have been taking care of our guests and offering them 5-star holidays in perfect harmony with the surrounding nature.
Year after year and generation after generation, we’ve expressed our love for hospitality, expanded and improved our hotel, and adapted our services to the needs of modern guests. The result is an eco-friendly hotel in South Tyrol with unmistakeable charm and style that promises pure well-being.
When my parents embarked on their “wooden hotel” project, in those days they were entering completely new territory: A mostly wooden house had never been built, not to mention a hotel! The key reason behind their idea was the cosiness created by spaces made of wood.
The shining example of this vision was the South Tyrolean farmers’ “Stube” lounge. During the construction meetings, the question of what made these “Stuben” so cosy came up again and again. In the past, this question was easy to answer, as the “Stube” was the only heated room and was therefore the place where the family gathered and the heart of the home.
So, that cosy feeling wasn’t just because of the wood, but above all the warmth of the stove. The traditional farmers’ stoves were made of clay and stone. As they stood in the room, the heat radiated differently than it does with modern underfloor heating or a radiator, and there was less turbulence of the air and dust.
For my father, the solution was clear: The rooms needed to have heating that was behind a clay wall and not – as originally planned – under the floor. This was the moment the wall heating was born!
SUSTAINABILITY IS IN OUR NATURE
South Tyrolean nature is a real paradise that we need to cherish and protect. That’s why we’ve always lived in harmony with nature here at Hotel Urthaler.
We consciously prioritise quality, sustainability, and regionality. 20 years ago, during construction, we already attached great importance to resource preservation – and we’re overjoyed when our guests are also mindful of resources and contribute to environmental protection.
Because together, we can achieve truly great things. Our priorities here in the South Tyrolean mountains are the idyllic landscape, clean water, and pure air – we preserve them by using a pellet heating system, by consistently separating waste, and by being aware of the importance of nature to us.
Did you know that our Hotel Urthaler is the first wooden design hotel in the Alps? We’re proud to say that real pioneering work was involved in its construction. Together with three Bolzano architects, we transformed our idea of a sustainable, timeless hotel into reality.
It was built using the power of trees, by which we mean Erwin Thoma’s “Wood100” construction method. With natural materials from the surrounding area, together with local craftsmen and suppliers, with clear lines and no frills. Just like Mother Earth would make it.
The result is a hotel that’s built entirely without glues or artificial preservatives and that gives our guests fresh, vital energy in a natural ambience. We can rightly claim to be the warmest and most comfortable hotel in the Alps. The wood was harvested during a particular phase of the moon, so that it’s particularly resistant.
We avoided using varnishes, paints, and other chemicals, and instead of metal nails, we used wooden dowels. We wanted to develop an extraordinary new hotel concept that reflects sustainability but also guarantees comfort and guest satisfaction.
Today this is often described as pioneering work. This sustainable and eco-friendly building method also extends to smaller details, such as the use of classic room keys instead of magnetic cards.
Of course, we’re all about sustainability in our kitchen, too. Our motto: eat and enjoy thoughtfully. Everything we serve at Seiser Alm Urthaler is selected with love and care, by which we mean that we focus on regionality and seasonality, on sustainability, on individual taste experiences, and on a refined presentation.
Every day, our kitchen team prepares fresh, healthy dishes for our guests, starting with the breakfast buffet featuring all kinds of local delicacies, continuing with the afternoon snack with homemade cakes, and culminating in the choice of 5-course dinner in the evening.
And when you enjoy an à-la-carte lunch in the Jägerstube restaurant, you’ll be spoilt with fresh, quality products and the finest wines from the region.

THE WINE CELLAR
Good food is an indispensable part of a successful holiday – just like good wine. That’s why here at Hotel Urthaler, we create refined dishes that treat your taste buds and serve accompanying wines from our hotel’s own Ciulé wine cellar. Over the years, we’ve built up an impressive collection of fine wines from the region and the rest of Italy that will delight wine lovers and connoisseurs.
South Tyrol is well known for its exceptional white wines: Sylvaner, Kerner, Riesling, Grüner Veltliner … There are certain grape varieties that flourish here and are turned into (in some cases) award-winning wines.
Make the most of the opportunity and sample one of the local white wines on your holiday in South Tyrol. Or would you prefer a full-bodied red wine? Our cellar is also home to the finest Lagrein wines, which give you a real taste of South Tyrol.
First-class wines are made from this autochthonous grape variety, which impress with their full character, rustic elegance, and richly nuanced structure. Find your personal favourite in our detailed wine list or ask our sommelier for a personal recommendation. We’ll be delighted to advise you!
For groups of six or more people, we offer indulgent wine tasting sessions throughout the year. In a companionable ambience, you’ll sample the finest wines from our wine cellar together with our experts while simultaneously expanding your knowledge of the topic – no matter whether you’re a wine connoisseur or an occasional drinker. The atmosphere while sitting around our great-grandfather’s old workbench is absolutely unique.
THE CIGAR LOUNGE
Our Cigar Lounge invites you to indulge and linger in a stylish ambience. Here, smokers can enjoy each other’s company, take leisurely puffs of their cigars, happily fill their pipes, and contemplate life with like-minded people. Or simply listen to the music and immerse yourself in a newspaper.
Perhaps you’d like a drink to go with that? Whether a whisky, cognac, rum, or a carefully selected glass of wine from our Ciulé wine cellar, we’ll be delighted to grant your wishes. Smoking may be a vice, but sometimes it’s a sociable, feel-good, relaxing vice – that you can let yourself enjoy from time to time.
