THE TASTE OF ANCIENT TRADITIONS
Loro Piceno is the capital of vino cotto, a very peculiar product literally meaning “cooked wine”. Inside the noble palaces in the town centre (as well as at Villa Anitori) you can still find an interesting architecture of structures that were functional to pressing grapes and boiling wine.
The locals are very proud of their own “vino cotto” as every barrel keeps the nuances and the taste that a particular producer obtained through its own ability and secrets passed on to every generation.
Vino cotto is a typical wine of this area traditionally concentrated in a very narrow area in the province of Macerata and partially in that of Fermo. Strong and sweet, amber in colour, with an intense fruits scent. The production technique dates back to the Piceni who in turn took it from the Greek and hasn’t chnged much since then.
Plauto in 191 b.C. describes vino cotto as one of the best beverages to be served at a banquet. In the town of Loro Piceno a permanent exhibition is dedicated to the tools and techniques used in the making of vino cotto and a small museum is located in an evocative location next to the porch of San Francesco church.
LAND OF ARTISANS & LUXURY CRAFTS
Le Marche is among the leading manufacturing regions in Italy, especially concerning clothing, shoes and fashion accessories. Craftsmen tradition has always been widespread withn its population and has evolved into a high end manufacturing industry.
The tiny little village of Loro Piceno is close to several productive districts, each unique for their peculiar crafts and it is indeed possible to shop around both at some artisanal workshops and at the factory outlets of well known fashion and design brands.
Macerata and Fermo provinces are primarily known for shoes (Tod’s, Prada, Loriblu, Santoni, Fornarina, Paciotti, Fabi, Bikkembergs, NeroGiardini), jewels (Brosway) and fashion accessories, like hats and knitwear.
Tolentino is the place to go for leather sofas and accessories, being home to Poltrona Frau, Valdichienti and Nazareno Gabrielli, while Treia is famous for its kitchen industries (Lube, Vismap). Take the chance to visit a fancy factory outlet or a little craftsmen workshopon to complete your stay at Villa Anitori with a touch of glamour.
ABBADIA DI FIASTRA
“Ora et Labora”, “Cruce et aratro”, these are the fundamental rules of life that have always inspired and guided the work of the Cistercians of the Abbey of Chiaravalle di Fiastra, a work that, in hundreds of years, has realized a priceless heritage that has enhanced the fundamental value of this territory.
The Abbadia di Fiastra Nature Reserve was created to protect the lands belonging to the Cistercian monks and shaped by them over the centuries and where it is still possible to enjoy a welcoming and harmonious environment, expression of a balanced relationship between man and nature.
The Abbey of Chiaravalle di Fiastra, moreover, with its almost intact environments and still inhabited by the monks, offers all visitors, habitual or not, the possibility of participating in religious life and immersing themselves in a suggestive atmosphere of spirituality.
In addition to bringing to life the slow rhythms of the Macerata hills, the Reserve is also the perfect place to play sports. Along its paths immersed in the green it is in fact possible to walk or to make excursions by mountain bike or on horseback.
THE BLUE MOUNTAINS
Legend has it that in the cave of the Sibyl, located on the homonymous mountain, lived “the illustrious prophetess who rarely reveals her secrets”. Necromancers and lonely knights came from all over Europe, after exhausting journeys, hoping to get an oracle from the Sibyl.
The magic of the past is expressed today in the enchantment of the places that make the Monti Sibillini National Park a spectacle of nature. Leaving from Loro Piceno, the hills and valleys of the Unione Montana dei Monti Azzurri are a puzzle of different colors that vary with the seasons.
On them the eye rests spacing on the horizon limited by the Sibillini and feeds on sensations and small enchantments: ancient trees, rushing streams and foaming waterfalls, silver lakes, farmhouses, small villages embraced by their ancient walls, churches with their elegant stone portals.
The National Park welcomes its visitors with a great variety of landscapes: narrow and impressive gorges such as the suggestive “Gole dell’ Infernaccio”, flowering meadows such as the famous Piani di Castelluccio, mountains with peaks over 2.000 meters as the Priora, the Monte Bove, woods and lakes with clear water such as Lake Fiastra and Lake Pilato.
In the territory of the Park you can try excursions with trekking, mountain bike and horse riding, or for the most adventurous, you can try free flight or practice winter sports at the Ussita Frontignano and Bolognola ski facilities.
LE MARCHE RIVIERA
Within less than 30 minutes drive from Loro Piceno you can reach the Adriatic coast and its enchanting tourist resorts. The blue flags Civitanova Marche, Porto Sant’Elpidio, Fermo and Porto San Giorgio offer equipped beaches, restaurants, beach resorts, places where you can practice sports such as tennis, sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing and a lively nightlife offering shows, cultural events and fun for everyone.
For those who love history and art, the splendid towns that populate the hills near the sea such as Civitanova Alta, Sant’Elpidio a Mare and Torre di Palme, are worth a visit.
Nature lovers can go further north to Monte Conero , a paradise overlooking the sea where you can visit some of the most beautiful pearls of the Adriatic: Numana, Sirolo, Le due Sorelle, Portonovo.
LORO PICENO
The sky line of Loro Piceno and the very essence of its ancient history are represented by the imposing high-medieval castle, around whose circles the life of the feudal village, of the Earth and of the Municipality has been unraveled for centuries, and which still is the soul and the body from which winding alleys of ancient cobblestones, houses and buildings in gilded terracotta, gently sloping down towards the plain and modernity.
And meanwhile the gaze runs away from the sea to the mountains, from the Marca of Ancona to the Piceno, between a rippling of ferocious lands and a transparent overlapping of laughing ridges.
The sweetness of the surrounding hills, the serenity of the landscape, the neatness and rigor of the various restorations made to the urban plant, make Loro Piceno a very pleasant place of residence and a popular tourist destination.
RECANATI: HOME TOWN OF GIACOMO LEOPARDI
Speaking of Recanati is like evoking the great poet Giacomo Leopardi who was born here in 1798, and he was inspired by this nice little town in many of his lyrics.
Think of the square mentioned in the poem ” il Sabato del Villaggio”, right below the birth-home of the Poet; think of the tower described in “Passero Solitario” in the cloister next to the Church of S. Agostino, which dates back to the 13th century; think of the hill of “L’infinito” on Mount Tabor with the ancient garden of the monastery of the Poor Clares and the World Center of poetry and culture.
Today the city of Recanati is known throughout the world thanks to its Poet and the related National Center for Leopardi Studies, but the culture-loving visitor will find many other interesting reasons in this town: from the Library of 20,000 volumes collected by the Count Monaldo Leopardi, (Giacomo’s father), to the palaces and churches rich in works of art and the museum dedicated to another great son who made the city famous: the tenor Beniamino Gigli
LORETO & THE HOLY HOUSE OF THE VIRGIN MARY
Like a treasure chest, the Basilica of Loreto houses one of the greatest treasures of Christianity: the Holy House of Nazareth, where, according to devotional tradition, the Virgin Mary received the Annunciation.
The “house of the Madonna” consisted of three walls leaning against a cave dug into the rock (which is located in the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth). According to popular tradition, on the night between 9 and 10 December 1294 the stones of the house of Nazareth were flown by angels.
In fact, some studies and documents found confirmed that transport was by sea on crusader ships. In fact, after the expulsion of the Christians from the Holy Land by Muslims, an exponent of the “Angeli” family, rulers of Epirus, was interested in saving the Holy House from certain ruin, which was, therefore, transported first to Trsat, in today’s Croatia, in 1291 and then in Loreto on 10 December 1294.
Studies carried out on the stones of the Holy House would confirm its Palestinian origin, they are worked according to the technique used by the Nabataeans, a population bordering with the Jews, much used also in Palestine.
On the stones there are numerous graffiti similar to the Judaeo-Christian ones of the II-V century found in the Holy Land, in particular in Nazareth. Furthermore, the technical and architectural comparisons show that the three walls connect perfectly to the cave kept in Nazareth.
LO SFERISTERIO
Built between 1820 and 1829 at the expense of the wealthyest among the citizens of Macerata, the building was built on the project of the young architect Ireneo Aleandri.
Conceived for the game of the “ball with the bracelet”, very popular in the mid-nineteenth century, at the beginning it hosted various types of public shows, such as parties, rides, political and sporting events, equestrian circuses and bull hunts.
In the twentieth century we begin to think that the internal space, with its harmony between the neoclassical colonnade, the high straight wall and the large central open area, can be the perfect set for the opera performances. In 1921 Giuseppe Verdi’s L’Aida made its debut at the Sferisterio and was repeated for 17 evenings, and seen by 70,000 people.
After the Second World War, starting from 1967, the opera house resumes its successful path, culminating with the current Macerata Opera Festival, hosting the most important artists in the world.
With its perfect visibility and excellent natural acoustics, around 2500 seats, 104 balconies and a stage of considerable size, the Sferisterio Opera Seasons attract the most demanding public to applaud original proposals and prestigious casts.
URBS SALVIA ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE
The Archaeological Park of Urbs Salvia spans about 40 hectares and is the most important and spectacular of le Marche. The visit itinerary allows you to grasp the structure of a typical Roman city in its entirety. At the highest point is the aqueduct tank, two parallel tunnels that supplied the city below with water.
Lower down, the Theater, one of the largest in Italy and the only one that preserves substantial traces of painted plaster. It was built in bricks at the beginning of the 1st century. A.D. The underlying “Niche Building” served as a scenic connection between the various levels of the city, that is, between the theater plateau above and the forum.
At the foot of the hill stands the majestic sacred area, consisting of a minor temple and a large temple with cryptoporticus, an underground corridor where you can admire valuable frescoes with iconography related to Augustus’s propaganda and delightful panels with scenes of animals interspersed with lunar masks.
Outside the imposing walls, up to five meters high, there is the Amphitheater, built by Lucio Flavio Silva Nonio Basso at the end of the 1st century. A.D. near which there are two imposing funerary monuments. Finally, a visit to the State Archaeological Museum gives you an overview of the Roman civilization of the site.
