The hotel is located 50 miles west of Galway City. We are one hour drive from Galway. Two and a half hours from Shannon Airport. Four hours approx from Dublin Airport.

The Hotel has two helipads and Jet A1 Fuel available. When you arrive in Clifden we are located less than 1 km from the village on the Sky Road which is on the west side of Clifden.

With a tradition of unrivalled hospitality, the Restaurant at Abbeyglen Castle, opened by the Hughes family in 1960 is regarded locally as one of the best restaurants in Clifden, the Abbeyglen Castle Restaurant is known for its affordable luxury dining experience, cozy ambience and unrivaled views.

Only a 7-minute amble from Clifden village, the Castle Restaurant is situated in the heart of the ivy fortified castle in the hills overlooking the harbour. The Castle Restaurant is renowned for its superb kitchens, classic dishes, and innovative use of fresh local ingredients.

Guests can choose from an A La Carte Menu or elect to dine from the extensive “Table D’Hôte” Menu, which changes daily. Our experienced Chefs are always more than happy to accommodate any special dietary requirements you may have.

Menu favorites include seasonal fish and seafood, Seafood Chowder known for its heartiness and locally sourced fish and Cleggan Bay Crab Claws, caught by local fishermen, Killary Bay Oysters and Wild Atlantic Lobster cooked to your specification.

As the days shorten, robust winter dishes feature, grilled prime cuts, game and warming casseroles reflect the open fires and comfort of being cosseted after a day in the fresh Connemara air.

Compliment your food with a paring from our thoughtfully curated wine list featuring classic old-world vintages, exciting new world labels and organic and biodynamic wines.

Dining at the Abbeyglen Castle while gazing at sunset over the yachts and fishing boats moored in the harbour and beyond to the remarkable Connemara landscape is the highlight of many guests’ stay.

The Restaurant is renowned for its atmosphere and is popular with the village locals reflecting the central role it plays in the local community. As you dine you will enjoy live music performed on a Steinway piano, usually in full swing.

Offering everything you would imagine from a castle restaurant with cozy open fires, exposed stonework and original beams, large ornate mirrors, crystal chandeliers and many objet d’art, all combine to bring romance to your dining experience.

After dinner, all are welcome to the Castle Piano Bar to enjoy spontaneous musical evenings, where you can sample the unrivaled atmosphere of Steinway sounds while some of the best local artists will impress you with their majestic voices.

Guests are always welcome to bring their own instrument and sing along till the early hours. Tuesday night is Irish night. We provide an Irish themed menu serving a number of traditional dishes. Accompanied by a wonderful evening of traditional Irish music and song which continues after dinner in the Castle bar.

Food & Castle Pub
An Irish Pub is more than somewhere to get a drink. To visit the Castle Pub at Abbeyglen Castle is to meet a community, experience true Irish hospitality and discover the soul of Connemara.

If popping in at lunch time for a bowl of freshly made seafood chowder and a chat with Jim over the bar or enjoying a complimentary glass of bubbles at the evening reception, you will immediately feel the sense of community and fun that prevails in this charming pub.

Every evening after dinner join guests and locals around the piano for drinks and songs as Lavinia and Paul prepare your favourite cocktail or serve a glass of locally brewed Bridewell Brewery beer.

Things to do at Abbeyglen

While Abbeyglen is completely on its own private grounds surrounded by trees and hills with spectacular views of the Twelve Bens Mountains as well as views of the sea, it is still only a 6 minute walk from the castle to the bustling village of Clifden, where you can enjoy fantastic shopping, lively little pubs and meet friendly locals.

Connemara’s Gems Touring & Scenery
In Connemara you are spoiled for choice with stunning scenery everywhere you go. Abbeyglen Castle is located on the Sky Road and just a five minute drive from the most fabulous views you will ever see.

The Sky Road Loop is 16KM and the route takes you up among the hills overlooking Clifden Bay and its offshore islans, Inishtuk & Turbot. You can walk, cycle or drive up the Sky Road. When you reach the highest point you will see a car park and viewing area on the left.

Connemara Greenway
Ireland’s longest cycle and walking route between Clifden and Galway City. The 76km long Connemara Greenway connects the alpine-like town of Clifden, Connemara to the bustling city of Galway, travelling on the old railway line which closed in 1935.

When completed the Connemara Greenway will be the longest off-road walking and cycling trail in Ireland with a multitude of activities, places to stay and warm welcomes on your journey. The Connemara Greenway will be a traffic free cycling and walking trail.

Abbeyglen Castle Hotel in Clifden, Connemara is uniquely situated at the start of the Greenway at Ardbear Bridge Waterfall. Cross over the bridge and onto the Dooneen Road at the edge of Clifden town. This very enjoyable walk, offers views of The Twelve Bens, Salt Lake, Errisbeg Hill and the Roundstone Bog complex.

Connemara Activities – A Must
If you’re looking for something to do in Connemara, look no further. There are a wide range of activites on your doorstep from horseriding on Cleggan Beach to playing a round of golf at the Connemara Championship Golf Links.

Why not take a 90 minute cruise on the Killary Fjord and take in the wonderful scenery that Connemara has to offer.

Connemara Golf
A short drive from the hotel you will find the Connemara Championship Golf Links. At the Edge of Europe on the wild Atlantic coast lies a links course that is a challenge to all who play there.

Nestled between the mountains and the sea in the West of Ireland, the Connemara Championship Golf Links is an exhilarating golfing experience. This awesomely picturesque 72 par course with breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean was designed by Eddie Hackett and measures over 7,000 yards.

Wind and rainbows are the specialty of the house at this 27 hole course which was started in 1973. For the Golf addict: The Abbeyglen Castle Hotel also has a small 9-hole Pitch and Putt course.(for the summer). Open day every Wednesday in The Connemara Golf Club

Popular Tourist Attractions in Connemara
A visit to Connemara is not complete without a visit to Kylemore Abbey & Gardens. It is just one hour from Galway City and is one of Ireland’s top tourist attractions.

Dan O’ Hara’s Farm located on the outskirts of Clifden on the Galway Road is another popular tourist atttaction which offer guided tours that are entertaining and educational. It offers demonstrations of traditional farming activities such as turf cutting, sheep herding and soda bread making on the open fire.

Connemara Walks Worth Exploring
From long hikes to easy strolls, look no further than the Connemara National Park which has the perfect hike up Diamond Hill. With a height of 442 metres, you will be sure to experience some of the most stunning views from the top. There are also some easy strolls along the trails within the park.

Another great walk is the Alcock & Brown landing site which is located in Derrygimlagh on the Ballyconneely road. The area is equipped with presentation-boards answering many questions regarding the highlights of the area. Alcock & Brown’s first transatlantic flight was achieved in 1919 so you will be full of great knowledge by the end of your walk.

Cycling in Connemara
Roam the highways of Connemara at your leisure. Cruise gently along the bog road and to secluded beaches which are now within easy reach with your electric bike.

Stunning Beaches in Connemara
The best beaches to visit on your Summer Staycation would have to be Dogs Bay in Roundstone. This beach is one of the nicest beaches in Connemara, with its white soft sand and crystal blue water, it’s definitely a firm favourite.

Another stunning beach would have to be the Coral Strand which is located on the main road towards Ballyconneely. This beach has lovely coral sand and stunning water. Both of these beaches have free car parking available and are perfect for swimming in.
