Caterpillars turn into colourful butterflies, buds bloom into scented flowers and seeds become succulent grapes. This is how the Creator made our beautiful world: from something extremely simple, nature is able to create something special. In this wonderful circle of life, man too can be creative.

This is the ethos behind our gourmet restaurant at Alpenroyal Grand Hotel; the restaurant’s chef uses the fruits of the great oceans, Alpine herbs and plants, Mediterranean and Indian flavours, tempting treats and the most tender fillets to create refined and appetizing dishes to sate both palate and soul. Come and visit us, we cannot wait to show you first-hand.

AMAS STUDY – WHAT IS IT?
The positive effect of a vacation in the mountains-To be active in Val Gardena is healthy! Now it has been proven: a several-week stay in the mountains is healthy for you.

This is the result of a medical-sports science project called AMAS 2000 (Austrian Moderate Altitude Study 2000), which – between 1998 and 2000 – did a long-time-study on the effects of a hiking vacation in the mountains on the human organism.

The scientists discovered that an active vacation at a altitude starting from 1.400 m has a positive effect on the overall state of health. So it has finally also been scientifically confirmed that hiking in Val Gardena is healthy.

The positive effects are: the improvement of fat and sugar metabolism, a clear lowering of high blood pressure, and the improvement of oxygen transport by the red blood cells.

During an active vacation in Val Gardena the quality of sleep, the duration of sleep and the ability to sleep improve as well. Therefore: enjoy the beauty of nature and come to visit us at Alpenroyal in Val Gardena.

HIKING
Take in the view of the natural paradise of the Dolomites; it couldn’t be more beautiful. For many people, the Dolomites are the most beautiful mountains in the world. There is a good reason why they were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009. Seeing this natural wonder once is at the top of many people’s bucket list.

The peaks of the Dolomites are extraordinary whatever the time of day, whatever the season. On a morning hike at sunrise or the alpenglow in the evening, the Dolomites are simply spectacular.

There are numerous well signposted hikes – easy and challenging, steep and flat – that lead through this natural paradise. The idyllic mountain huts with their traditional ‘Kaiserschmarrn’ also encourage you to linger. Anyone who has ever visited the Dolomites carries them forever in their heart.

CLIMBING
The architect Le Corbusier considered the Dolomites to be the most beautiful structures on earth. They are the best climbing mountains in the world for generations of climbers. For climbing fans, the Dolomites offer stunning via ferrata, remote Dolomite peaks and magnificent views.

GARDENA GUIDES
If you want special mountain experiences, you need a competent partner. For this reason, you should trust the organisation and company of the Gardena Guides.

Their strengths lie in their well-founded training, their many years of experience and a keen sense for the well-being of their guests. Our Gardena Guides transform every tour into a unique mountain experience.

MOUNTAIN BIKE
The Dolomites send the hearts of mountain bike lovers racing. After all, the area around the Sella massif has a lot to offer. Countless trails of varying degrees of difficulty, the renowned Sellaronda MTB tour and the legendary bike events are just some of the highlights worth mentioning. Racing bikes and e-bikes are also welcome, of course.

SELLARONDA MTB TRACK TOUR
This multifaceted MTB tour takes place in the middle of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, around the Sella massif. The Sellaronda MTB tour (clockwise) is a full day tour, on single trails, paths and forest roads. The ascents are usually managed by mountain railways.

However, you have to have average riding skills on the descents. The Sellaronda counter-clockwise MTB tour is particularly suitable for e-bikes and cyclists who prefer to ride uphill.

MOUNTAIN BIKE SCHOOL
The Mountain Bike School of Selva is made up of qualified instructors for teaching and accompanying mountain-bike groups. From the beginner to freeride adventurer, each one will find the right offer for him in MTB School Val Gardena.

Organized on top with a varied weekly programme, which provides for each day a different excursion is able to satisfy even the highest demands of experienced cyclists. Even for road cyclists.

TOP BIKE EVENTS
In summer, Val Gardena hosts two bike events that couldn’t be more different: Sellaronda Hero and Sellaronda Bike Day. The legendary Sellaronda Hero attracts amateur cyclists and professional athletes from all over the world year after year. It’s a very challenging race that pushes mountain bikers to their limits.

Sellaronda Bike Day, on the other hand, is much more sedate. The Sella mountain pass roads are reserved exclusively for cyclists on this day. It is an opportunity for the whole family or a bunch of friends to enjoy the beauty of the Dolomites in peace.

GOLF
All eight of the golf courses in South Tyrol have one thing in common. They are encircled by the enchanting South Tyrolean backdrop, which couldn’t be more beautiful.

Lush green mountain pastures, imposing mountain landscapes, sweeping views, golfing almost becomes secondary. Professional or beginner, a golf holiday in South Tyrol offers you the finest manicured golf courses, all of which meet the most exacting standards.

EQUITATION
Nearby Alpenroyal you find the horse centre “Pozzamanigoni”, which offers horse riding lessons, day trips, a pony club, horse pension and riding competitions. Another beautiful riding stable is located in Santa Cristina at Monte Pana.

RAFTING
Rafting, Canyoning and Hydrospeed are just some of the possible activities in the Dolomites. Adrenaline is guaranteed. We rely only on expert teams, which guarantee maximum safety, and respect nature to have the most fun.

Different tours are suitable for both, beginners and experts. Admire the spectacular water-nature…Do you want to go down the rope from a huge waterfall in a pool of clear water? If yes, this adventure is for you.

NORDIC WALKING
Nordic Walking – means to move and keep fit every part of your body, but also fun and experiencing nature up close! This new trend is a scientific method of the revolutionary movement in nature. You walk with special poles.

This allows you to bind 90% of the muscles, reduce by 30% the physical effort and consume 46% more energy than traditional jogging. It is ideal for those who want to exercise and enjoy the fresh mountain air. Val Gardena is the ideal place to practice this innovative sport, more beautiful and effective in hilly terrain.

PARAGLIDING
Selva di Val Gardena is a wonderful place to admire the clear sky, but it’s even nicer when you look at it from above, trying to touch the cold beauty of the Dolomites with your finger. If you are not an experienced skydiver, try to jump in tandem with a pilot qualified in tandem flights. You’ll be fascinated, we guarantee that…

HELICOPTER FLIGHT
Experience the thrill of a helicopter flight over the Dolomites – don’t miss this adventure! You can start right beneath the Alpenroyal, because we have our own heliport.

ICE SKATING
In Selva Alta Val Gardena ice skating is possible in both, summer and winter. The Ice Stadium is open to the public with its skates rental and dressing room, but it can also be reserved for private groups. Also available are skating camps and stages for children during the summer with coaches of international repute.

DOLOMITES – UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE
The Puez-Odle Group is the sixth of the 9 areas in the Dolomites – on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Since 27th June 2009 the Dolomites are a UNESCO World Nature Heritage Site. They belong to the 50 most beautiful landscapes of Europe and 199 worldwide!

The Dolomites, with their multitude of shapes and colours, very high towers which stand out against the sky, impressive walls and peaks full of crevasses enchant legendary mountaineers and world famous celebrities. Paul Grohmann, the first person to climb the Sassolungo and the Three Peaks, was fascinated by these “pale mountains”.

Through the publication of books and films, the climber from Val Gardena, actor and director Luis Trenker has made “the mountains of his homeland” famous all over the world.

According to Reinhold Messner, the world-famous mountaineer, the Dolomites are “the most beautiful mountains in the world”, while the architect Le Corbusier describes them as “the finest natural architecture in the world”.

Quite rightly so. Anyone who has visited Paris will always dream of being able to return to the foot of the Eiffel Tour or to the Louvre. Anyone who has been to the Caribbean will not be able to help singing the praises of their white beaches.

Who has seen the Dolomites will always return. In fact the whole world visits Val Gardena and the Dolomites. Because Val Gardena is one of the pearls of the Dolomites.

SELVA VAL GARDENA
During winter, a white fairy-tale scenery. Come summer it turns into a unique and beautiful natural landscape. During every season the world of the Dolomites presents its one-of-a-kind charm in an array of stunning beauty.

The towns of Ortisei, S. Cristina and Selva Gardena (only 6 miles distance) not only offer beautiful nature scenes, but also a wide variety of art and culture.

Ortisei 1236 m, S. Cristina 1428 m and Selva Gardena 1563 m are situated at an altitude of 1200 to 1700 meters above sea level. The alpine meadows and ski slopes rise up to 2518 m and the mountain peaks up to 3181 m.

ART, CULTURE AND TRADITION
When the locals talk to each other, they mostly speak a language called Ladin. The origins of the language go back to the Roman Empire, when the legions marched into Rhaetia.

The Latin of the conquerors was mixed with the language of the native Rhaetians. During more than four centuries of Roman rule, this Rhaetian language spread from the Swiss Alps to the Adriatic.

When the Germanic tribes of the Bavarians and Alemanni moved south in the 6th century, the area of the Rhaetian language was split up, leaving enclaves in which the language has survived against all obstacles right down to the present day, e.g. in the canton of Grisons, in the Dolomites (Val Gardena, Val Badia, Val di Fassa, Livinallongo, Cortina) and Friuli.

The sense for art in Val Gardena is known all over the world, especially the sacral and profane wood carving art. Seeing with the hands, feeling with the eyes: this is how handcrafts become art. Feelings, imagination and will take shape. Wood carving has a long history in Val Gardena.

It developed at the start of the 17th century in order to get through the long winters. Up to one hundred years ago, Val Gardena was still a secluded high-alpine valley, which was difficult to access. Hence, the inhabitants were forced to make a second income.

Wood carving in winter, and distributing and selling all over the world in summer. Necessity developed into art, and the most precious pieces can be visited in the Ladin Museum.
