Aquapetra Resort & Spa is an exclusive 4-star luxe hotel tucked within the extraordinary location of Alto Sannio. 25 hectares of centuries-old woodland, orchards and olive groves encircle the 42 rooms and suites, the Spa, the large outdoor swimming pool, the restaurants and bar, creating a small universe of beauty and wellbeing for a unique pleasure and relaxation experience.

Aquapetra stems from the restoration of a bygone hamlet dating back to 1858. Throughout its cobbled streets, in the quaint square, in the stone buildings the energy of an inhabited hub teeming with history and identity, and which come alive with new lives, buzzes.

Limestone, wood and terracotta together create an atmosphere both warm and welcoming. Light takes centre stage: owing to its glass structures, interior and exterior become merged, offering up a continuous dialogue with nature.

A 4-star luxe hotel taking the form of a hotel complex, a small jewel in the heart of the Sannio area guarded by 25 hectares of centuries-old oak and holly oak forest, orchards and olive groves. This is the world of Aquapetra Resort & Spa, a universe of beauty and wellbeing waiting to be discovered by all the senses, in order to experience true relaxation.

AQUAPETRA SUITE
Aquapetra Suite is the jewel in the Aquapetra Resort crown, for those seeking elegance and the utmost comfort. Inside, a large glass and wrought iron door separates the living room from the bedroom, leaving the rooms beautifully bright. A welcoming Jacuzzi takes pride of place in one of the suite’s two bathrooms, perfect for enjoying serious relaxation, à deux.

LA LOCANDA DEL BORGO RESTAURANT

Spaces formerly used as the hamlet’s cellar and pantry now house a special place, made of stone vaults and large windows where Sannio’s gastronomic wealth is celebrated evening after evening.

Within the kitchen of La Locanda del Borgo, Executive Chef Luciano Villani interprets the same philosophy that permeates every corner of Aquapetra: harmony, balance and creativity.

A gastronomic journey that celebrates local excellence: Laticauda lamb which is low in cholesterol, Caciocavallo cheese from Castelfranco in Miscano, Matese potatoes, Bonea onions, Regina beans grown in San Lupo. Most of the products come from small, passionate local suppliers. Oil, preserves and bread are made on site.

The room that houses the La Loggia restaurant overlooks the surrounding greenery via large windows; sitting adjacent are the patio and the Orangery where you can treat yourself to a Club Sandwich or a salad, before heading to the bar for an aperitif or after dinner cocktail.

In the summer, the outdoor area springs to life: under the shade of the olive trees, the raffia, wood and wrought iron tables offer up a prime spot to unwind over lunch, or to dine while gazing at the evening’s stars.

From the classic cocktails of international and contemporary mixology, mixed to the highest standard – ranging between Italy and the rest of the world – to the extensive list of spirits going from Cognac and Armagnac to Bourbon Whiskeys, to Rum, to Sakè, for sipping seated before the fireplace in winter, or else the refreshing cool of the swimming pool in summer.

An incredibly broad selection of organic teas and infusions, accompanied by meditation wines and dessert wines of chiefly local provenance. Dishes celebrate local ingredients in a modern reinterpretation, where nature dominates and lightness is the leitmotif.

More traditional dishes, hearty salads and comfort food classics like the world-famous Club Sandwich. At La Loggia, chef Luciano Villani takes inspiration from the cuisine of La Locanda del Borgo to propose a simple, delicious menu, where gourmet call-backs sit alongside more traditional dishes.

THE WINE CELLAR
The product of painstaking selection, the Aquapetra cellar is a rare, precious trove housing more than 700 labels from great national and international classics to small local gems.

Particular attention has been paid to Sannio native varietals such as Aglianico, Greco di Tufo and Fiano, exponents of viticultural vocation that the Benevento area has demonstrated since ancient times.

Pairings with dishes offers up a gastronomic experience that becomes the story of a unique land, where the hills are thick with hectares of vines as far as the eye can see, crisscrossed by Roman aqueducts and remains from the Samnite era.

The cellar is housed in the hotel’s underground spaces where wine was once stored. Naturally devoted to the preservation of the bottles kept there, its environment guarantees the best temperature and humidity conditions so that the wines may evolve over time.

A special selection of rare bottles, historic vintages and hard-to-find labels from Italian wineries that have made wine history. About 150 rare bottles, the result of careful research among famous producers and collectors, requiring advance request. They may be enjoyed solo, or combined with the tasting menus from the Locanda del Borgo and La Loggia.

THE GARDEN
Centuries-old olive trees surround the hamlet’s stone buildings: there are 1600, and they sketch a sweet, gauzy landscape in which to walk, dine and cool off in summer. Walking through the narrow byways, you can see mulberry trees, strawberry trees, kumquat trees, pomegranate trees and, heading on ever farther, you come to the orchards.

THE WOODLAND
Simply leave the hamlet and walk along the surrounding paths to take in the beauty and tranquillity of woods silent and unspoilt.

Here, over an area of about 150 hectares, you can see an environment notable for its impressive biodiversity, archaeological remains dating from the Samnite era and prehistoric times, and the extraordinary “Puri”: 20 dolines, karst depressions similar to small craters – where the descent is approximately 100 metres – just the spot for day-trippers who are fans of natural phenomena.

THE ART PARK
Aquapetra is a place where art is enjoyed, created, and exhibited. The resort’s philosophy, oriented towards holistic wellbeing connecting body and mind, gains expression in an ambitious project that seeks to combine the location’s natural and architectural beauty with the expressive power of contemporary art, in a continuous dialogue between art, nature, and architecture, and between artists, guests and players from the art world.

The project came into being in 2018, in collaboration with Neapolitan collector Fabio Agovino. Two artists every year are invited to take part, one international and one Italian, selected from the Agovino Collection, who in their praxis express particular attention to sculptural practice, and to landscape and environmental culture.

Through an immersive experience at Aquapetra they have the opportunity to be in dialogue with one other, and with the resort’s rural and architectural space to produce their site-specific work. The inaugural artists for the first edition of the Artists’ Residency are Chiara Camoni and Martin Soto Climent.

In Aquapetra artists and gallerists find an interaction space that institutes a completely new mode of dialogue between artwork and visitor, between buyer and exhibition space, between exhibition space and the surrounding environment.

The location’s natural and architectural beauty engages with the expressive power of contemporary art, in a continuous dialogue that leads to the production of unprecedented new works and experiences.

DISCOVER THE SANNIO
We are in the heart of the ancient Beneventan Sannio, in that green, unmolested Campania known to so few. Rows of centuries-old vines and olive groves trace a landscape made up of hills and valleys and rock-chiselled gorges.

Small stone hamlets, castles and medieval fortresses recount their age-old history and millennia-old traditions, beginning from the pre-Roman era and going up to the Mediaeval period.

All around, the Matese Park and the Taburno-Camposauro Park: unsullied terrains inhabited by wolves and golden eagles, with crystalline lakes, and high peaks where forts, castles and villages spring up. Where, in the 1500s, ‘Janare’ – Benevento’s witches – held their nocturnal sabbaths.

Sant’Agata dei Goti is one of Italy’s most beautiful villages. It offers unforgettable panoramas amid small shops brimming with the tastiest of morsels: from the famous San Marco dei Cavoti chocolate torroncini to black pork salami, stroll amid noble mansions, churches and silent cloisters.

In San Lorenzello and Cerreto Sannita, the ceramics tradition of ceramics is alive and thriving. At the windows of the mediaeval stone buildings, old ladies can be seen making bobbin lace, a legacy of the Kingdom of Naples.

Guardia Sanframondi is famous for its wine production and for the spectacular Battenti procession: Seven Year Rites which take place every seven years in the week following 15 August.

The Sannio Caudino Archaeological Museum merits the trip: the collection of Magna Graecia vase collection – the fourth century BCE “kraters”– will leave you speechless. The most famous, the Assteas krater, was part of the Getty Museum collection for over 20 years, only return to its place of origin in 2005.

At the exit, the Caudina valley lies in the distance, where in 321 BCE the Samnites defeated the Romans in the renowned Battle of the Caudine Forks. Before arriving at the museum, treat yourself to a coffee break in the town’s gorgeous historic centre.

Hiking in the Taburno Regional Park is popular with keen trekkers who move through dense beech woodland, all the while taking in the spectacular foliage, or follow hidden trails on the hunt for mushrooms or truffles. Water from the snow-topped peaks creates gorges and canyons where, helmeted and harnessed up, you can dive right into your quest to discover nature.

BENEVENTO
The city of Benevento is an open-air museum: it ranges from spectacular Roman remains – Trajan’s Arch, Roman theatre – to the early Middle Ages with the monumental Santa Sofia complex – Unesco World Heritage site – dating from the Lombard period, up to the Baroque in the form of the convent of San Domenico, where contemporary artist Mimmo Paladino created his famous installation Hortus Conclusus in modern reinterpretation of artistic imagery of the past.

TASTING & WINE TOURS
You are in the “cellar” of the Campania region, between MT Taburno, the Matese massif and the banks of the Calore river, where more than half of all regional wine is produced.

The scents and hues of the Samnite area are relayed through the wines of conscientious winemakers, small family-run businesses and cooperatives; custodians of the land and defenders of biodiversity.

Tasting tours to discover the extraordinary oenological wealth of Sannio, European wine capital 2019. An accompanied experience on the discovery of the flavours and fragrances of Samnite wine, guided by our sommeliers who in a twofold itinerary will relate the history and products of the area’s finest winemakers to you.

The scents and elegance of Sannio’s surprising whites. The incredibly rare Agostinella, the marvellous Falanghina, the characterful Greco di Tufo and the structure of the Fiano di Avellino. The history, structure and power of bold Sannio reds. The mysterious Barbera, the bold Aglianico and the soft tannins of the Piedirosso Campi Flegrei.

Trips and picnics in the vineyard, guided tastings and visits to local producers and artisans. Because wine represents the soul of a terrain: within each bottle is the vitality of the land that produced it, the culture and the millennia-old actions of its people.
