Barnett Hill is a seriously hip destination in the Surrey Hills, if we do say so ourselves. Perched atop our Hill and revealing itself at the end of our winding tree-lined drive, Barnett Hill is (in the words of the Telegraph no less) a ‘gingerbread-brick palace’.

Contemporary and design-led, the 56 boutique rooms, suites and residences are appointed with oh-so-chic designer furnishings, sure to set hearts aflutter.

Spread across the main Mansion House, Courtyard and Gardener’s Cottage, we have something for everyone; from cheeky getaways in our fabulous four-poster suites to countryside escapes with the pooch in our Courtyard rooms.

Barnett Hill was originally the private home of the famed Thomas Cook family, and we’re sure you’ll feel right at home the minute you arrive at the Hill. It’s a destination where friends and family come together to feast and celebrate, revel in life’s little luxuries and get some seriously deep relaxation. We think you’re going to love it.

THE HISTORY
The history of this fabulous Queen Anne-style country house dates back to 1905, when it was constructed by Frank Cook, grandson of renowned travel agent Thomas Cook as a family home. Many of Barnett Hill’s original features still remain, including the summer house, tea house and greenhouse.

Barnett Hill Hotel was once nothing more than a wooded hilltop, which offered impressive views across the Surrey hills. The stunning location caught the eye of Frank Cook, grandson of renowned travel agent Thomas Cook, who, in 1905, constructed the Queen Anne-style mansion as a family home.

Following his death in 1940, Cook’s wife loaned the house to the British Red Cross as a convalescent hospital during WWII, and it became a rehabilitation centre for civilians injured in bombings. Four years later, Mrs Cook sold the house to the Red Cross who turned it into their National Training Centre.

In the 1970s, the British Red Cross opened the house to the public, offering independent training courses and promoting Barnett Hill as a conference venue.

In 1996, the house was leased to the Chudley family, the owners of Highgate House, the UU’s first conference hotel. They went on to purchase Barnett Hill in 2005 and expanded their offering to include accommodation, dining, weddings and private events.

We bought the property in October 2016 and transformed the hotel’s interior, modernising our guest facilities. The Grade II listed hotel still holds many of its original features, including the summer house and tea house.

ROOMS & SUITES
Bold and contemporary, our luxurious bedrooms and suites at Barnett Hill are furnished to the highest specification. With sleek furnishings by Michael Northcroft, fabrics from McNutt of Donegal and oh-so-cool wall-coverings with our signature prints in striking gem hues contrasting with the cool neutral palate of the Queen Anne style mansion, each of our 56 boutique bedrooms are seriously stylish and indulgent. Brownie points galore await!

Arranged across the Mansion House, the Courtyard and the Gardener’s Cottage, some of our rooms are ideal for pets and others for stays with the little ones, whilst our Suites are just fabulous for extra special occasions. Champagne anyone?

All of our rooms are wonderful for celebrations, events and with our location near Guildford are ideal for business stays away from the hubbub of the city. For group getaways (for less than you’d think!) explore our sets of rooms in the Courtyard and our Gardener’s Cottage – ideal from 4 – 12 guests.

Many rooms enjoy views of the gardens that would bring a tear to Thomas Hardy’s eye, and if not the gardens the beautiful woodland that surrounds the estate. What’s not to love?

MASTER SUITE 43
Master Suite 43 is our ultimate hideaway suite, stretching east to west across the upper floor of the Courtyard. Reached through a private stairway, you’ll find your own personal loft-style apartment, with a squidgy corner sofa defining the lounge space for cosy movie nights, a dining space and dressing space as well of course as the bedroom zone with utterly divine carpeting among other treats.

The bathroom is the crown jewel of the suite, with a walk-through shower for two and a free-standing tub for two, twin vanities and oodles of space to let you have your own personal spa moment in your ‘apartment’.

Decorated in cool as a cucumber shades of eau-de-nil with stylish brick-print wall coverings, velvety carpeting and beautiful natural stone, it’s our most contemporary suite experience on the Hill.

THOMAS COOK SUITE
The Thomas Cook Suite, named after the original master of the house, is next to the suite which bears his wife’s name, the Beatrice Cook Suite, and also enjoys an enviable floor-plan including a glorious bay window. Where Beatrice’s suite is cerise and floral, Thomas’s is soothing grey contrasted with deep claret velvet.

With a large lounge area and dining space, it’s easy to picture yourselves as masters of the manor here (virtual bell for the house staff courtesy of our app of course), taking a cheeky aperitif in your suite before making your way down the grand staircase for supper.

A very 21st Century Downton experience! In the bathroom, of course you’ll find a super deep tub for long soaks and a shower with space for you both. Romance is served!

BEATRICE COOK SUITE
Our Beatrice Cook Suite is named after the wife of Thomas Cook, and she certainly knows how to impress. One of our largest suites complete with a dreamy bay window seating area with south-facing views across the gardens, it’s one seriously stylish suite.

Kitted out in vibrant cerise and floral patterns, contrasted of course with our sleek-lined furnishings, the Beatrice Cook Suite defines bedroom goals. Ideal for design-lovers, the Beatrice Cook Suite is sure to dazzle and make any special occasion that bit extra.
