For pure relaxation and health benefits, venture to the Bodysgallen Spa with its swimming pool, gymnasium, sauna, steam room and Club Room.

HISTORY
A noble history? The name ‘Bodysgallen’ may mean either ‘house among thistles’ or ‘the abode of Cadwallon’, a 6th century chieftain. Bodysgallen Hall is a Grade 1 17th century house that has been skilfully and sympathetically restored by Historic House Hotels Limited since 1980 and given to the National Trust in 2008.

Bodysgallen is believed to have begun life as a watchtower during the building of Conwy Castle, probably in the 13th century, to warn of surprise attack. It was not until late in the Elizabethan era, when it was owned by Richard Mostyn, who served as High Sheriff of Caernarvonshire, that it became a residential house.

Through marriage this passed to the Wynn family and a tablet can be seen on the south-west gable bearing the initials of Robert and his wife Katherine Wynn “1620 R:W:K”.

Today you enter the oldest part of the house, the main hall, above which is the Drawing Room featuring a magnificent fireplace. Here you will find the 17th century coats of arms of the Mostyns, Wynns and Vaughans, which are also found in the stained glass windows in the Dining Room and main stairwell.

Bodysgallen Hall has gradually evolved over the centuries from modest hamlet to a large and comfortable country house, with restored and converted outbuildings, surrounded by one of the finest Arts and Crafts gardens in Wales.

A short history of Bodysgallen Hall has been written by Oliver Garnet detailing family connections and exploring Bodysgallen that can be purchased from the hotel reception.

THE GARDENS
Start exploring – the Lily Pond, the rare 17th century Parterre, the Rose Garden, Potager Garden, the Obelisk and a Gothic Folly. Bodysgallen Hall is surrounded by over 200 acres of its own parkland and beautiful gardens – both manicured and wild.

The gardens have been recognised for their award-winning restoration. Featured are the rare 17th century parterre of box hedges filled with sweet smelling herbs, at the centre of which is a sundial dated 1678, natural limestone outcrops, a rockery with water cascade, walled gardens, lily pond and several follies.

There is also a formal rose garden and a number of well-established specimen trees and shrubs, including medlar and mulberry. Beyond the walled rose garden is the potager garden, which is not only ornamental with box hedge borders, but produces much of the organic fruit, vegetables and herbs incorporated in Chef’s seasonal menus.

Various springs traverse the parklands and there are several woodland walks such as the Terrace Walk, the Ladies Walk, the Eastern Covert Walk that leads to a gothic tower and the Pydew Village Walk that leads to the obelisk on top of Pydew mountain.

Explore these walks and discover points where you can enjoy outstanding views across to the River Conwy, the Castle and medieval town, the Great and Little Orme, and the ruins of Deganwy Castle. Maps of these walks are available at Reception.

The Park also has an extensive network of trails, over 100 lakes and craggy peaks such as Cader Idris and Tryfan.

Take a narrow boat or walk along the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, a 300-metre-long ‘stream in the sky’ some 40 metres high, which is an engineering marvel and a World Heritage Site, located not far from Llangollen, on the Welsh-English border.

Walk the last stretch of the Offa’s Dyke, through the Vale of Llangollen and all the way to Prestatyn. Or explore the nooks and crannies of Ruthin Gaol – one of North Wales’ most fascinating buildings.

BEAUMARIS CASTLE
The last of King Edward 1’s massive building programme in North Wales, a drive time of 36 minutes from Bodysgallen. Beaumaris is the most technically perfect castle in Britain with classic proportions and perfect symmetry.

It was the 13th-century hi-tech equivalent of a spaceship landing unceremoniously on Anglesey today! The last of King Edward’s Welsh castles, which he was unable to finish due to stretched finances and distraction elsewhere from the Scots.

Under the protection of CADW (Welsh word meaning ‘to protect’), the Welsh Government’s historic environment service, Beaumaris Castle along with Harlech Castle, Caernarfon Castle and Conwy Castle, has been part of the Castles and Town Walls of Edward 1 World Heritage Site since 1986.

CAERNARFON CASTLE
One of the most impressive of King Edward 1’s Welsh castles, and just a 35 minutes drive from Bodysgallen Hall. Caernarfon Castle was built on the previous site of a Norman motte-and-bailey castle, and before that a Roman fort.

Its polygonal towers were a move away from round towers, and the Eagle Tower is the most impressive. King Edward stamped his supremacy on the Welsh population when his son, the first English Prince of Wales was born in the castle in 1284.

In 1969, the investiture of the current Prince of Wales, HRH Prince Charles took place here. The Royal Welch Fusiliers’ Museum is housed in two of the castle’s towers.

Under the protection of CADW (Welsh word meaning ‘to protect’), the Welsh Government’s historic environment service, Caernarfon Castle along with Conwy Castle, Harlech Castle and Beaumaris Castle, has been part of the Castles and Town Walls of Edward 1 World Heritage Site since 1986.

CONWY CASTLE
One of the finest surviving medieval fortifications in Britain, just 8 minutes drive from Bodysgallen Hall. Built for King Edward 1, by Master James of St George, it is one of his Welsh castles built between 1277 and 1307, and at an estimated £15,000 was the most expensive of all.

It has two barbicans (fortified gateways), eight massive towers and a great bow-shaped hall. Once up on the battlements, you have breathtaking views across mountains and sea.

Under the protection of CADW (Welsh word meaning ‘to protect’), the Welsh Government’s historic environment service, Conwy Castle along with Harlech Castle, Caernarfon Castle and Beaumaris Castle, has been part of the Castles and Town Walls of Edward 1 World Heritage Site since 1986.

HARLECH CASTLE
Set on a near-vertical cliff-face, it was impregnable from almost every angle. A drive-time of around 1hr 10minutes from Bodysgallen Hall. ‘Men of Harlech’.

The nation’s unofficial anthem is said to describe the siege which took place during the War of the Roses, where in a handful of men held out against a besieging army of thousands.

King Edward 1’s ‘walls within walls’ model was built between 1283 and 1295 by an army of nearly a thousand skilled craftsmen and labourers. Edward liked to use only the best masons from Savoy and England’s finest carpenters and blacksmiths. There is a brand new visitor centre connected to the castle by a bridge, which is an integral part of the visitor experience to the castle.

Under the protection of CADW (Welsh word meaning ‘to protect’), the Welsh Government’s historic environment service, Harlech Castle along with Conwy Castle, Caernarfon Castle and Beaumaris Castle, has been part of the Castles and Town Walls of Edward 1 World Heritage Site since 1986.

PLAS MAWR
Plas Mawr stands as a symbol of a prosperous, buoyant Elizabethan age in the heart of Conwy’s narrow cobbled streets, just a 9 minute drive from Bodysgallen Hall

Plas Mawr is probably the finest town house of the Elizabethan period in Britain. Its owner Robert Wynn, an influential merchant of great repute, was fond of grandeur and colour, and liked entertaining lavishly.

Robert Wynn built this grand house between 1576 and 1585 and has exquisite ornamental plasterwork ceilings and friezes, painted in vivid original colours and skilful carpentry. His initials are evident on various crests and coats of arms throughout the house.
